  2. Beignets on the menu at a French-inflected steakhouse and cocktail bar inside a hotel co-owned by Nick Saban, which does make Alabama football feel like a lifestyle brand. The chef blends brasserie and steakhouse instincts, the cocktails are serious, and the wine list is curated rather than encyclopedic. Brunch runs just as dressed-up as dinner, so there's no casual way in.

  3. Rank 292. Grisette

    Classic French

A French bistro in Richmond where the steak frites is the answer whether the question is date night or Tuesday. The wine list is short, approachably priced, and chosen with genuine taste, which pairs well with a charcuterie spread that doubles as a reasonable case for skipping an entree. The chef behind it also runs a wine shop and a bakery nearby, so clearly one project was never going to be enough.

  4. Rank 292. L'Ardoise

    French

A red velvet curtain meets you at the door of this Duboce Triangle bistro, fully separating the street from a dim, burgundy-and-dark-wood room that could pass for a family hotel in Dijon. Coq au vin, duck confit, and house-made pâtés hold down the menu, and the île flottante is the kind of dessert that makes you briefly forget you're in San Francisco. Stepping back through that curtain afterward feels like returning from somewhere farther away.

  5. Le Central's neon sign above Bush Street has been announcing the cassoulet day count for what feels like forever, and the number is well into the five figures. This is an old-school French bistro, white tablecloths against exposed brick, curved booths, faux stained glass overhead. The cassoulet, duck and sausage and beans in a sauce that folds in a bit of the previous day's batch, is the reason regulars never open the menu.

  6. Bruno Chemel ran one of the Peninsula's more ambitious tasting-menu restaurants for years; this is not that. Le Parc Bistrobar, tucked into a hotel near Union Square, is a French bistro and cocktail bar that leans classic, with oxtails braised in red wine until the meat nearly dissolves into the sauce. Christie Chemel's cocktail list runs deep on Chartreuse and Pineau des Charentes, which is either a selling point or a warning depending on your relationship with French liqueurs.

  8. A French bakery on West Charleston where the croissants and chausson aux pommes share the case with a full Dubai chocolate section, because the pistachio-and-kataifi craze has to land somewhere. Pain au chocolat is the old-guard order, and the team runs savory croissant and quiche specials through the week. It's a pastry-case-and-pay-at-the-counter kind of place, so come as you are and leave with a box.

  9. The pastry case sets the pace at this all-day French cafe in Scottsdale: grab a croissant on your way out, or settle into the chic little dining room for a proper quiche with a flaky crust and a side salad dressed in a vinaigrette so good they bottle it for sale. Crepes, eggs Benedict, and omelets round out the menu. French conversation drifts out from the kitchen, which feels less like ambiance and more like a genuine reflex.

  10. Layered fries stacked into tidy golden blocks are the surprising star of a menu that otherwise runs toward caviar service and bourbon-smoked elk loin. Parc is Aspen's classic white-tablecloth French-American restaurant, the one locals book when something is worth celebrating, which in Aspen is apparently always. The lounge and bar take walk-ins on a shorter, friendlier menu if you didn't plan ahead, which in Aspen is apparently also always.

  11. The North Beach spot that used to be the legendary Washbag is now Petite Lil's, a French bistro that seems perpetually mid-renovation, with paint swatches on the walls and a sawhorse in the corner whose handler has quietly relocated to a barstool. The menu leans French, running from a proper omelet to a tomahawk steak with anchovy butter, and bone marrow arrives with an optional green Chartreuse luge, which is exactly the kind of upsell you say yes to.

  12. Rank 292. Saint Germain

    French Bakery

Saint Germain is a French bakery and cafe at the Interlock, with Parisian-style tables roomy enough that you can set up a laptop and stay until closing without a single glare. The display cases hold frilly cakes so decorated you hesitate before the first forkful, briefly. The macaron selection runs past twenty flavors, lavender to pistachio, which is a lot of decisions for someone who only came in for coffee.

  13. Rank 292. SakuSaku Flakerie

    Japanese-infused French Bakery

French technique meets Japanese flavors at this Cleveland Park bakery, where cruffins come filled with lychee and grapefruit and the matcha shows up in mochi rolls alongside lavender. The pastry case leans into seasonal and Japanese ingredients in a way that feels less like a gimmick and more like a genuine point of view. Weekend mornings draw a line worth joining, even if you tell yourself you're just stopping in for coffee.

  14. Rank 318. Chardon

    Modern French

The cheese trolley rolls whether you ordered it or not, which sets the tone for this French restaurant inside Houston's Thompson Hotel. The cooking is modern and refined, with Texas ingredients folded in quietly, Gulf shrimp here, pecan-muscadine gelée there. Small plates, proper entrées, theatrical desserts, the kind of room where the meal takes a while and nobody seems to mind.

  18. A Parisian-inspired wine bar and grocery that has been around forever, La Buvette rotates its menu of French everyday food daily: mussels, roasted chicken, house-made sausage, cheese plates, and well-priced wine. The sister spot next door handles sandwiches, charcuterie, and fresh bread. A once-temporary patio has become permanent, which tells you something about how the neighborhood feels about the place.

  21. Mémère's is a French bistro tucked inside the Neptune Hotel, dim and cozy, with off-white walls tinted to suggest decades of Gauloises that never happened. The menu is short and the wine list stretches to a $600 magnum of champagne, so dress for a date or an anniversary. Upstairs sleep is available, and the karaoke bar on the ground floor handles anyone who isn't ready to be reasonable.

  22. Rank 319. Pierrot Gourmet

    French Café

Pierrot Gourmet is a French bakery-cafe attached to the Peninsula Hotel, which means it's the one place in that building where nobody asks you to dress up. Grab a seat among the brunching tourists if you like, but the to-go line is where the flaky chocolate croissants, hefty cinnamon rolls, and tarts shaped like chrysanthemums are moving. The Infatuation includes it on its Chicago bakeries list.

  24. The onion soup follows Julia Child's recipe and nobody has touched it, which tells you something about the kitchen's instincts. This casually elegant French bistro in Sterling plays with the classics just enough, turning tuna tartare into something that reads like steak, serving Brie crispy, while leaving the soul of the thing intact. The Washingtonian named that tartare one of their favorite DC-area dishes of the year.

  27. Rank 331. Francine

    Mediterranean French

High ceilings, gold cocktail shakers, and a rack of lamb that belongs nowhere near a mall, yet here we are at Scottsdale Fashion Square. Francine is a Mediterranean-French restaurant with the polish of a countryside manor and the energy of a room where people came dressed to be seen. The bar pulls its own weight if you're not staying for dinner, and the wine list gives everyone a reason to linger.

  29. Rank 333. The Alston

    French Steakhouse

The Alston is a French-leaning steakhouse on the third floor in River North, where the bread gets sliced at your table and you pick your own candle holder, which is the kind of decision-making that makes a steakhouse feel like a party. Steaks are wood grilled with French sauces on the side, but the duck gets pressed tableside, with a metal contraption wringing out the jus. Eater lists it among Chicago's best steakhouses and River North's best restaurants.

  36. Rank 339. Cache Cache

    Traditional French

The patio tables along Mill Street are the most contested real estate in Aspen come summer, which tells you something about how long Cache Cache has held its ground. It's an old-school institution serving traditional French-American fine dining, the kind of room where regulars settle into the bar before you've even found your coat check. The frisée salad with duck egg and bacon has its own fan club, and the escargot in Bourguignon butter is exactly what it should be.

  37. Chéri Rooftop is a French restaurant perched up the Eiffel Tower in Paris Las Vegas, which means you're dining in a replica of a landmark while looking at the real Strip. Expect Champagne, caviar cones, and a steak tartare that suits the date-night dress code. The chocolate soufflé takes an extra 15 minutes, a delay that couples tend to find suspiciously convenient. Eater lists it among its romantic restaurants in town.

  38. Rank 339. Circa 1875

    Parisian Bistro

The bar side fills up on cold nights with regulars who treat the wine list like a warm blanket. This Parisian bistro on Whitaker Street keeps its French classics unfussy: bourguignon, foie gras, the kind of menu that doesn't need to explain itself. Old World wines and classic cocktails hold the room together, and the atmosphere leans convivial in a way that somehow never tips into loud. A reliable anchor in a city full of tourists chasing the same cobblestones.

  39. Rank 339. Grégoire

    French

A small French sandwich shop on Cedar Street where the main event is a buttermilk-fried chicken cutlet on a Semifreddi's roll, craggy-coated and topped with a creamy, spicy slaw. The potato puffs are the other reason people come, little pillowy spheres that have built a loyal following on their own. A few sidewalk tables exist, but most orders leave in a bag headed for Live Oak Park.

  43. Rank 339. Third Cliff Bakery

    French Bakery

A sun-filled corner bakery in Jamaica Plain where the croissant menu changes often enough to keep regulars guessing. Third Cliff built its following at a farmers market cart before settling into its permanent spot, and the French pastry classics get unexpected company here, kimchi cheddar croissants alongside vegan cardamom morning buns. The espresso is taken seriously. Neighborhood coffee shop energy, pastry-destination ambitions.

  44. Rank 339. Vintage

    French

  45. The duck press arrives tableside in full theatrical flame, which tells you most of what you need to know about this petite French bistro in Collingswood. Beef Wellington and escargot anchor the classics end, but the seasonal menu is where the kitchen quietly does its most interesting work, cycling through dishes that disappear when the produce does. Bring your own bottle and a reason to linger.

  48. Rank 353. Maison Pucha Bistro

    Ecuadorian-inspired Bistro

  49. Rank 353. Marée

    Californian Bistro

Clam-shaped pendant lights from Fritz Hansen set the tone at Marée, a French-California bistro and wine bar that sits just above the chef's Michelin-starred Lielle, a little more relaxed and a little less reverent. The menu leans on French technique and California produce, moving through truffled onion soup and escargot beignets toward pastas and a bouillabaisse, with pillar candles and a green onyx bar keeping things properly moody throughout.

  50. Rank 353. Mistral

    Bistro

Mistral has been a French institution on Ventura Boulevard for what feels like forever, and a new team has stepped in after the founding owner retired, refreshing the room and the menu without abandoning the bistro bones. French onion soup arrives crowned with a Comté grilled cheese, and four versions of steak frites suggests a kitchen that takes the assignment seriously. A sommelier handles the wine list, and a full cocktail menu is there if you need it.

  51. Rank 353. Petite Edith

    Midwestern French

Petite Edith is a French bistro on the ground floor of a luxury apartment building, which means the neighbors can claim it without ever putting on a coat. The big U-shaped bar seats solo diners comfortably, and the banquettes in back suit a quiet dinner for two. The kitchen takes French classics through a Midwestern filter, so you get two kinds of bread, and brunch brings duck fat hash browns.

  53. Rank 353. Sous Sous

    Californian French

A former Silver Lake church became Hotel Lucile, and the team behind De La Nonna tucked this restaurant inside it, which gives the room more drama than most new openings deserve. The menu threads French technique through California farmers market produce, with a Southern ease in how it's all served. A full bar runs cocktails that lean tequila and mezcal, and the whole thing is relaxed enough that you won't feel underdressed.

  58. A cozy, tiled dining room in the Cave Creek hills serving classic French fare across brunch, lunch, and dinner, the kind of place that still does cherries jubilee without irony. Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
