  1. Rank 201. Perle

    French

The coffered wood ceiling and vintage frames make this downtown Pasadena bistro feel like someone airlifted a Parisian side street into Southern California. The chef has no interest in deconstructing the classics, which means Burgundy snails arrive glossy with herbed butter and duck à l'orange stays duck à l'orange. Order the soufflé for dessert; it takes time and it's supposed to. The Michelin Guide has it listed.

  2. The leather banquettes and high ceilings in this South End bistro are doing real work, making a Tremont Street dining room feel like something off a Parisian side street. It's a proper French bistro, the kind that does steak frites and sea scallops on a menu that takes no wild swings. The wine list leans France and California, and the servers actually know it. Weekday lunch and weekend brunch round out a place that fills up like it's been the neighborhood's open secret for years.

  4. Beaujolais Bistro is a proper French bistro in a vintage brick building on a leafy corner near the Truckee River, where tables sometimes spill into the front yard for what passes as a dinner party under the stars. Big groups get the moody wine cellar, and the list leans Burgundy with a few Napa bottles on standby. It holds AAA Three Diamonds and a spot on Eater's Reno list.

  16. There's an enigmatic clock mounted across from the bar that has puzzled guests for decades, and the staff aren't telling. Dobson's is a French restaurant with old-school gravitas, the kind of place where business lunches stretch longer than planned and the mussel bisque is treated as a point of civic pride. Duck à l'orange and grilled lamb chops round out a menu that hasn't chased trends and seems quietly satisfied about it.

    Modern French

Sixty floors above Lower Manhattan, the view from this sleek fine dining room makes the case that altitude and ambition can coexist. The tasting menu runs seasonal and approachable, and lunch brings a dry-aged cheeseburger that earns its place among the white tablecloths. The service team handles a full house with the kind of easy warmth that usually disappears at this altitude alongside the street noise.

  36. Leather booths, black-and-white marble floors, and a lighting level that discourages reading the wine list, all by design. This French bistro and wine bar in Tampa leans into the moody Parisian template without apology, anchoring the menu in house-made cheese and charcuterie before moving on to steak frites and boeuf bourguignon. The kind of room where ordering duck confit feels like the obvious and correct decision.

  37. Rank 238. Benoit

    Old-World Bistro

Two red wingback chairs face a working fireplace in the front salon, which tells you most of what you need to know. This is Alain Ducasse's New York bistro, all framed mirrors, red velvet banquettes, and oak paneling, the kind of room that resists every decade it passes through. The menu follows suit: cassoulet, pâté en croûte, foie de veau, and a rum baba that arrives with brioche, whipped cream, and a generous pour of rum.

    Vietnamese French

BT Nguyen's bistro on Henderson splits its menu between French classics and Vietnamese cooking, and the Vietnamese side does the heavier lifting. The room feels genuinely casual without being careless, and the servers seem to know everyone. Pho comes aromatic and generous, spring rolls arrive packed tight with ground pork and glass noodles. A short wine list and house iced teas cover the drinks side without overwhelming anyone.

  39. Rank 238. Bouchon

    French

Red velvet booths, marble tables, and polished brass in the middle of wine country: Thomas Keller's French bistro in Yountville plays it straight, no California detours. The menu runs through the classics with conviction, from salade lyonnaise to boudin blanc to profiteroles. The bakery next door draws its own line out the door most mornings. It's the kind of indulgence that doesn't apologize for itself, which, in a town this precious, feels almost radical.

  40. Rank 238. Casanova

    Rustic French

A bike with lavender spilling from the basket marks the entrance to this snug, old-school French cottage a block off Carmel's main street. The family modeled the interior on a Belgian farmhouse and dug an actual wine cellar beneath it, which sets the mood before the food even arrives. Rustic French cooking runs from hearty cannelloni to a grilled peach with pickled onion and toasted almonds. The private dining room comes with Van Gogh's table, which is either very romantic or a lot of pressure.

  41. Rank 238. Cenadou

    Modern French

The name is Provençal for "dining room," which sets the tone pretty neatly for this modern French bistro tucked into the North Salem countryside. White walls, dark wood, royal blue chairs, and big windows full of trees give it the feel of somewhere you'd actually want to linger. The kitchen takes Provence-leaning classics and nudges them gently forward, finishing the baba au rhum tableside with a rum pour and Earl Grey whipped cream.

  42. The velvet-curtained windows and chandelier glow of this French bistro on Taylor Street have been drawing nostalgic expats and neighborhood regulars for what feels like forever. A cozy back bar invites lingering, but the real draw is the dining room, where frogs' legs Provençale and a properly Gruyère-blanketed French onion soup anchor a menu of classic French cooking with the odd global detour. The courtyard opens when Chicago allows it.

  43. Rank 238. Electric Bleu

    California Bistro

A California-meets-French bistro in Mar Vista where the open kitchen puts every plate in plain sight and the room fills fast enough that weekend reservations are less a suggestion than a survival strategy. The menu moves between sautéed foraged chanterelles and duck with dates and saffron, with a prix fixe if you'd rather hand over the decisions. The wine list leans French and the lime tart has its own following.

  44. The copper bar wrapped in cherry wood is what catches you first, then the wall of bottles behind it. Entre Nous is a French wine bar in Clinton Hill doing apéro culture without the affectation: natural wine, small plates cooked with more care than the relaxed room suggests, and an atmosphere that works equally well for one glass alone or a long night with friends.

  45. Rank 238. La Cigale

    Gascon

A one-man prix-fixe kitchen in Glen Park, named for the cicada, that symbol of Occitania, which tells you exactly where the chef's head is. Joseph Magidow runs the open kitchen solo, sourcing carefully and butchering whole animals, and the menu shifts daily with just a handful of choices. Southwest French cooking in a small room with a neighborhood feel that quietly outgrows the neighborhood.

  46. Rank 238. Lumière

    French

The chicken liver mousse comes with olive jam, which tells you exactly what kind of brasserie this is. Lumière sits inside the Fairmont Century Plaza and runs a classic French playbook: fruits de mer, steak frites, a charcuterie spread with aged Iberico hams, crème brûlée done properly. The staff actually know the menu and will talk you through it, which in Los Angeles passes for a minor miracle.

  47. Wood floors, marble-topped tables, round-backed chairs: Mercat Bistro commits to the French bistro formula without a trace of irony. Escargots in parsley butter, French onion soup, moules frites, a croque monsieur at lunch. Nothing on the menu is surprising, and that's entirely the point. Business lunchers and neighborhood regulars share the room, and the service handles both without fuss. Grab a seat near the open kitchen if you want a little more noise with your classics.

    Brasserie French

The art nouveau interior on Lexington feels genuinely transplanted from a Parisian side street, which is precisely the point of this French brasserie. The kitchen runs classic without apology: chicken liver mousse, artichaut vinaigrette, profiteroles. The room fills with Upper East Side regulars who know the staff by name and never glance at the menu. Unhurried and polished, it's the kind of brasserie that makes you want to order in courses and stay well past the reasonable hour.

  49. Rank 238. Patty O’s Cafe

    Casual French Coffee Shop

Patrick O'Connell of the Inn at Little Washington running a casual cafe and bakery in a converted garage is either very charming or very on-brand, and it turns out to be both. The space has a marble bar, wood tables, and a stone fireplace doing a lot of work to warm what is essentially a very pretty lunch spot. The menu leans French country, the pastry case is serious, and the whole thing is far too polished to feel accidental.

  50. Rank 238. Rêve

    Modern French

Tucked into a corner of the Pizitz Food Hall, Rêve is a modern French tasting menu restaurant dressed in blues and whites that feels more composed than its food hall address might suggest. The chef runs à la carte at the bar and a fuller tasting menu in the booths, with French classics alongside things like ribeye marinated in banana vadouvan miso. The range is wide enough to keep you guessing which direction dinner will go next.

This is a proper French bistro in suburban Lafayette, with exposed brick, chandeliers, and a menu that runs from gougères and wild boar pâté to venison in puff pastry. Parisian French

The open-air rotisserie spinning in the front window is the tell: this is an all-day cafe built around Parisian-style spit-roasting, which in Flatbush means roasted chicken marinated for three days alongside bowls, platters, and seasonal grains. The whitewashed walls, cement floors, and a garden patio give it that particular Brooklyn-industrial ease. A good stop before or after Prospect Park, which is right there.

  53. A husband-and-wife team runs this dinner-only French restaurant at the edge of San Marco Square, where the open kitchen keeps things convivial without tipping into theater. The menu runs both à la carte and tasting formats, and the cooking leans seasonal and precise, the kind of place where the sauces are taken seriously and the plating follows suit. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

  54. The building has a long history and at least one dubious former owner, which the current team seems to find more amusing than embarrassing. This is a neighborhood French restaurant in a graceful old adobe, with outdoor firepits good for cocktails before you settle in. 70. Rank 272. Grand Brasserie

    Classic French

Inside Grand Central Terminal, this vast all-day French brasserie runs from the pre-dawn commuter rush straight through to a late-night dinner crowd, 365 days a year. The scale is genuinely staggering, which means walk-ins are usually fine, a minor miracle in Midtown. The menu swings from a lobster omelet at breakfast to classic brasserie fare at dinner, with the room itself doing a lot of the heavy lifting.

  71. Secondhand china covers the walls and lands on the table at this mostly French restaurant in Over-the-Rhine, which leans firmly away from the stiff Euro-bistro formula. Dark walls, checkerboard tile, and a four-course French tasting menu in a Gilbert strip suite, which is not a sentence anyone expected to write. Maeva runs all day, so you can stop in for a lavender latte in the morning and then come back dressed up for dinner. The kitchen does a la carte too, but the tasting menu is the main event, with servers who steer the pairings and explain each plate without making you feel like you're being graded.

  73. Housemade mafaldine with duck confit in a town that sometimes feels like a preserved-in-amber dollhouse: Finistère has a restrained Scandinavian dining room with rotating local art that quietly refuses to play along with Port Townsend's Victorian theatrics. The kitchen leans into Pacific Northwest sourcing, local oysters and albacore alongside proper pasta, and the whole thing moves with a calm confidence that comes from cooking at Per Se and Canlis before decamping to the peninsula.

  90. This is a loud French bistro in North Park that feels like it arrived on a flatbed from the Strip, minus the nightclub and the bottle-service tax. The steak is the move, and the pickle martini is a sentence you'll say out loud to your server. Bring friends who don't mind shouting across the table, then ask about the speakeasy upstairs, where a cognac and cold brew is the polite way to end the night.

  91. Butterfly tapestries climb the walls and spill onto a mezzanine level, and the bar fixtures look like conch shells, so you know the room has opinions. Augie's is a French bistro that earns its snails with the clamps and forks for the full surgical experience, though you can also order them Buffalo-style, which France will just have to accept. The burger, all pan-crusted patty and comté, has become a reason to drive up from the city.

  92. Rank 292. Bijou

    French

The sauces at this French bistro are apparently the thing, and the chef behind the tasting-menu destination Table Culture Provisions built Bijou to be his looser, à la carte sibling. Looser is relative: the croque monsieur has truffle in it and there's a beef Wellington on the menu. The San Francisco Chronicle named it one of the best French restaurants in the Bay Area, which tracks for a room where the cooking is this fussy in the best possible, no wait, this precise.

  93. Rank 292. Braseria By EDO

Chartreuse is on draft, which is how the night usually ends.

  95. A daytime sandwich shop tucked between the office towers of downtown San Francisco, Cafe du Soleil runs a tight lunch rush with a short line and shorter seating. The prosciutto sandwich, layered with brie and roasted bell peppers, is the kind of thing coworkers quietly compare notes on. Yerba Buena Gardens is a short walk when the tables fill up, which is most days.

  96. Rank 292. Cafe Sous Terre

    French Café

Cafe Sous Terre is a basement cafe and bar tucked under a brick mansion that now rents rooms to strangers, and it plays the French cafe of a century ago with green subway tile and long banquettes. By day it's laptops, coffee sodas, and quiche. After dark it's martinis, a croque monsieur, and weekly Vinyl Wednesdays. Eater lists it among Detroit's best bars and best coffee shops, so the same table does double duty.

  97. The outdoor tables on Baker Street are as close to a Parisian sidewalk cafe as Cow Hollow gets, which is either charming or delusional depending on your mood. Côte Ouest is a French bistro where weekend brunch brings smoked salmon benedict on an open-faced croissant, and a Kir Royale seems less indulgent than it should at noon. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the Bay Area's top French restaurants.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
