Chef Leo Madrigal slow-cooks the pork barbacoa-style until it's yielding enough to disappear into the green chile sauce. Corn tortillas, beans, pico-topped rice, melted cheese, the whole plate quietly assembled and not trying to impress anyone, which is exactly why it does.

A counter-service wing spot on the west side where the fryer does most of the talking. Wings come out plump and crisp, then get sauced or dry-rubbed, and the curry dry rub has a way of turning fingers an incriminating shade of yellow. The rest of the menu leans into the fryer too, with onion rings, egg rolls, and beignets to round things out. Phoenix New Times named it the best chicken wings in Phoenix in 2025.

Dick's Hideaway is a small New Mexican-leaning bar and grill tucked along 16th Street, where seated at the bar you can feel the heat off the open-flame grill. Green Chili is a casual Indian spot in a Rivergate strip, beneath Vietnam Veterans Boulevard, across from a Hooters and next to a church that used to be a Circuit City. It's easy to miss, which is how Nashville Scene ended up naming it the Best Tucked-Away Indian Restaurant. Hometeam Pizza is a casual pizza spot on Alabama Avenue where the ranch gets nearly as much attention as the slices. The co-owner built it from sour cream, mayonnaise, and buttermilk, then fussed with the spices until it came out pourable but not runny, which is a standard most bottled versions never attempt. Nashville Scene named it Best Ranch Dressing, and her husband says it's what she gets complimented on most, after the kids.

Honeytree is an East Side meadery, which means you're drinking fermented honey in a taproom instead of ordering a flight and pretending to know what a Viking would have wanted. Mead tends to run sweet, and the ginger candied in house is what pulls their Sweet Baby Ginger back toward something you could drink at a normal pace. It won a Best of Nashville from the Scene for exactly that. Dress is whatever you wore to work.

Inglewood Lounge is an East Nashville bar where the booths are tucked away and the lighting forgives everyone, which is the whole pitch for a first date. There's a covered patio, a dance floor for when things go well, and a bar menu with a piri piri chicken sandwich you can take to go when they don't. The U-shaped parking lot makes the exit easy. Nashville Scene voted it Best Place for a First Date in 2025.

A hay wagon rolls you out to the pumpkin patch, where you pick your own and pay by the pound on the way back. Irons Fruit Farm is an old-school u-pick operation outside Cincinnati, and come fall it draws families who treat the whole afternoon as the event. The apple cider alone is reason to linger at the main building after. A small tip: if your toddler proves uncooperative, the pumpkins near checkout have no idea.
