Rank 95. Chavela's
Creative Mexican
The guacamole comes loaded with smoked trout and morita chile salsa, which tells you everything about where Chavela's is headed. This Crown Heights Mexican restaurant earns its Michelin Bib Gourmand behind a wrought-iron door and into a room of vivid tiles and a wall of ceramic butterflies. The cooking leans creative without abandoning the mole that traditionalists came for, and the whole place runs warmer and louder than its Franklin Avenue address might suggest.

Brunch at this cozy Greenpoint restaurant draws a line of famished locals most weekends, and the pancakes have their own small mythology in the neighborhood. Inside, it's a French-Canadian operation with a clear affection for pork: pâtés, terrines, and charcuterie-forward plates dominate a menu that stays rich and unapologetic. Dinner is quieter and just as good. A Michelin Selected Restaurant.

Seasonal Italian
Strands of tiny silver beads cover the front window, so Daphne's announces itself quietly before you're even through the door. Inside, it's a refined, contemporary Italian-American restaurant in Bed-Stuy with a menu short enough to read twice. House-made pasta, shareable plates, and a grilled pork chop that takes its time all earn a look. The kind of neighborhood spot that makes you wonder why you ever leave Brooklyn.

Portion sizes here run generous enough that the name feels like a promise kept. Gordo's is a laid-back Bushwick cantina where the chef, a Mexico City native, turns familiar Mexican cooking into something that earns its Michelin Bib Gourmand. The room skews family-friendly, the menu covers tacos, chile relleno, and mole enchiladas, and nobody leaves hungry enough to be annoyed about anything.

Spanish
The slow-roasted suckling pig leg that anchors the menu tells you this isn't your standard tapas crawl. La Vara is a cozy Spanish restaurant in Cobble Hill where the kitchen takes cocina casera, home cooking, as both its premise and its ambition. Alex Raij's food has a playful, quietly inventive quality; the room draws the kind of neighborhood regulars who eventually stop looking at the menu and just tell the server to do whatever.

A sun-drenched sliver of a New American restaurant in Park Slope, Runner Up earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand by doing exactly what it sounds like it shouldn't: taking vegetables seriously without making you feel lectured. The menu swings between playful and precise, with produce driving dishes that also happen to involve trout rillette or daikon standing in for tortellini. Bread and desserts come courtesy of the sibling spot next door, which is either cheating or genius.

Matzoh ball ramen is the menu's thesis statement, and it holds up. This creative South Williamsburg restaurant earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand by stitching Ashkenazi Jewish and Japanese cooking together without the seams showing, toro tartare landing on sake kasu challah, Wagyu pastrami pressed into milk bread. The room is small and the vibe is neighborhood-casual, which makes it easier to order the chocolate challah bread pudding without feeling self-conscious about it.

Heirloom corn gets the full treatment here: nixtamalized, milled, and pressed into house-made tortillas that anchor everything on the menu. This Bushwick taqueria and tortilla shop earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand for a tight menu that runs from carnitas to chicken liver tostadas with candied kumquats, which tells you exactly what kind of ambition is hiding behind the counter. The salsas alone could cause a scene.

Wood-Fired Pizzeria
A wood-fired pizza shop in a converted auto garage in Clinton Hill, with kitschy décor that somehow pulls it off. The team spent years in the Jean-Georges universe, and that background shows up in combinations you wouldn't expect a pizza joint to attempt, like the St. Louis, which lays Midwestern Provel cheese over pickled peppers and meat on a proper crust. The Michelin Guide gives it a Bib Gourmand, and the room fills up fast on weeknights.

Thai
A menu item called "What the Hell" fried rice comes with twelve chili symbols and delivers on that promise, but this Thai restaurant in Cobble Hill is running a more interesting game than heat. The chef takes familiar flavors and bends them, with a soupless khao soi and a light-bodied green curry paired with grilled chicken and purple rice berry doing the quiet convincing. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of neighborhood spot that's easy to walk past once.

Japanese Noodle Shop
The chef makes the ceramic bowls himself, which tells you a lot about the pace of a meal here. This Greenpoint soba shop occupies a warehouse with factory windows and skylights, and the hand-cut buckwheat noodles, served cold or hot with dashi, are the point. Pricing runs steep for a noodle lunch, but the room is genuinely industrial and the gluten-free menu surprisingly complete. Soba-making classes also run here, if you'd like homework.

Pizzeria
The New Haven-style pies here are cooked to a serious crunch, with dough pressed thinner than the Connecticut purists would sanction and a tangy, oregano-heavy tomato sauce that makes a decent argument for staying in Brooklyn. Wheated is a Ditmas Park pizzeria with a full bar that also does bagels, so the menu has range. The New York Times put it on their best pizza in New York list, which is the kind of thing that fills a neighborhood spot fast.

Rank 95. Win Son
Modern Taiwanese
The facade is done up like a corner bodega, but step inside and it's all blonde wood, exposed brick, and a little bar where solo diners settle in without apology. Win Son is a bright, casual Taiwanese spot in Williamsburg that holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the menu takes Taiwan's culinary landscape somewhere fresher than the usual shorthand suggests. Scallion pancakes show up alongside so many dishes that ordering them as a starter is quietly redundant.

Trinidadian
Ali's is a counter-service roti shop on Fulton where the menu runs from conch to liver to curry goat, all folded into dhalpuri, the soft split-pea flatbread that does the heavy lifting. It closed for a renovation with almost no warning, which rattled the regulars, and it came back with picture windows full of pepper sauce and bush tea. Halal, cash only, so stop at the ATM before you start deliberating over kingfish.

The pressed-tin ceiling and apothecary cases are original to the old drugstore this soda fountain has been around forever inside. Exposed brick and poured cement set a sleek, airy backdrop for traditional Thai cooking that has been quietly reworked for the contemporary table. The rooftop of the Hoxton Hotel in Williamsburg, with the Manhattan skyline doing its thing at sunset, is a solid place to eat skewers. This is Michael Solomonov's skewer house, and the format is pleasantly fixed: a spread of salatim to start, then meat and vegetable skewers over the coals, then soft-serve. Reservations are famously hard to land, which tells you something about how the room fills on a Tuesday.

Pizzeria
The slices here are slender, which is a statement in a borough where bigger is considered better. F&F is a slice shop in Carroll Gardens running a quiet argument for restraint: a careful sauce-to-cheese ratio, toppings used sparingly and only when they add something. The New York Times put it on their short list of the city's best pizza places, and Grub Street agreed. Come hungry but not starving, because the line moves at its own pace.

A sleek omakase counter in Williamsburg where the chef runs an edomae-style sushi progression that moves from composed small bites through a focused nigiri course. The copper bar wrapped in cherry wood is what catches you first, then the wall of bottles behind it. An open hearth warms the dimly lit room at this upscale Italian restaurant on Flatbush, where the sommelier-restaurateur's wine instincts shape the whole experience as much as the kitchen does. Rattan furniture and a quietly tropical room a short walk from Fort Greene Park set the mood at this neighborhood Thai restaurant. The menu pulls from both northern and southern Thailand, which keeps things more interesting than the usual single-region rundown. Southern Thai
The yellow facade on Smith Street belongs to a Southern Thai restaurant that already has people lining up, much as its predecessor in the same space once did. Rank 172. Salsa Pizza Napoletana & Street Food
Neapolitan Pizzeria
You order at the door, grab a table, and the pizza shows up without ceremony, which is exactly the point at this Greenpoint slice shop. The dough is soft and light in the way Neapolitan purists get worked up about, and the toppings stay out of each other's way. The bruschetta with honey and ricotta is a small, sweet detour worth taking. Ranked 32nd on 50 Top Pizza USA, Salsa keeps things casual enough that nobody feels underdressed.

Rank 193. Lucali
Pizzeria
Cash only, no reservations, and a line down Henry Street most nights: Lucali has been a Carroll Gardens institution long enough that the wait has become part of the lore. It's a small, candle-lit pizza shop serving large pies and calzones, nothing more. The dough is soft and thin in the New York tradition, and the room is the kind of quietly charming that makes two hours feel reasonable.
