  8. Rank 691. JollyJolly Coffee & Kitchen

    Caribbean Coffee Shop

A West Oakland coffee shop where the jollof rice is serious business: sharply spiced Nigerian rice with heat that keeps building, served with caramelized plantains and your choice of stewed chicken, oxtail, or goat. Okra and egusi soups arrive with fufu. Seating is tight and the wait can stretch, so bring patience and a friend you want to impress with how good Oakland gets. The San Francisco Chronicle put it on their best Oakland restaurants list.

  13. Leon Bridges played the open mic here before he played anywhere else, which tells you something about Opening Bell's ear for talent. It's a coffee shop that moonlights as a live music venue, with one of the longest-running open mic nights in DFW and occasional national touring acts rounding out the calendar. Beer and wine are on hand if coffee isn't your thing, and there's food beyond pastries: sandwiches, soups, salads.

  20. Sophia's Brunch Counter is a counter-service daytime spot in a curved, metal-wrapped building that looks like it was meant for something with more ceremony. Inside, a chalky green marble counter and a lot of plants set a slow, airy, vaguely coastal mood. The menu stays small, bouncing between comfort food and lighter plates, with espresso up front and a little wine and cocktails behind it. Eater put it on its list of Phoenix's best brunches.

  21. Rank 691. Tea Bar & Bites

    Mediterranean Coffee Shop

Mismatched tablecloths and cloth napkins set the tone at this cozy Mediterranean-leaning tea room and cafe, where the menu runs to sandwiches, salads, and sampler plates with a light Greek accent. The house iced tea is steeped with clove, and the patio, tucked behind a fountain, manages to feel like someone's backyard despite sitting right off the street. A good spot for a slow Saturday lunch with no particular agenda.

  23. Green Guatemalan coffee beans aged in bourbon barrels before roasting is the kind of detail that either makes you very excited or very tired, and Vice & Virtue is banking on the former. This specialty coffee shop and roaster sits inside downtown Memphis's Arrive Hotel, with a warm, slightly theatrical aesthetic that fits the neighborhood. They source globally and collaborate locally, keeping the menu rotating and the regulars curious.

  25. Rank 691. Wishing Town Bakery Cafe

    Chinese Coffee Shop

  26. A multi-roaster coffee shop tucked into an airy high-rise lobby near the Holland Tunnel, which is not a sentence you expect to lead somewhere good, but here we are. The shelves rotate through a rotating cast of specialty roasters, the menu stays short and efficient, and the lobby has enough room to spread out, plug in, and stay far longer than you planned. Good pastries, no guilt about the outlet use.

  27. The lobby of the Classic Stage Company turns out to be a fine place for a coffee shop, all spare seats and big windows that beg you to watch people cross 13th Street. Everyman is a no-frills espresso bar pulling beans roasted by Black and White out of North Carolina, with Colson pastries from Brooklyn if you need something to eat. The staff are warm in a way that makes the spartan room feel intentional rather than unfinished.

  28. Two benches out front are famous enough to appear in the logo, which tells you something about how long this West Village coffee shop has been part of the neighborhood. Joe Coffee Company roasts its own beans in Long Island City and piles the pastry case high with muffins and quickbreads. It has the warm, unhurried feel of a place where regulars know the staff by name, which in New York passes for a small miracle.

  29. Rank 739. Principles GI Coffee House

    Personality-Driven Coffee

The pourover menu specifies black only, no exceptions, which tells you everything about this coffee shop before you've ordered. A queer-owned community hub straddling Park Slope and Gowanus, Principles runs on small rotating roasters, plant-based milks across the board, and a gratuity-included model. Cyclists and coffee obsessives fill the place, drawn as much by the ethos as the espresso. The garage door opens when weather permits, and there's a bike repair area out back.

  30. Rank 739. Southside Coffee

    Minimalist Coffee

Window-service only since 2020, this minimalist coffee shop in South Slope turned its interior into a commissary, which turns out to be a fine trade. Counter Culture beans anchor the drinks, but the daily-rotating pastries, cheddar jalapeño corn muffins, and hugely bready sandwiches are what bring out the line of families and dogs. Greenwood Cemetery is an easy walk, if you need somewhere to eat.

  32. A coffee shop in Downtown Columbus built around Tanzanian beans that are hard to find and roasted on-site in a machine you can practically lean against at the counter. By day it serves the statehouse crowd across the street; by night it pivots to espresso martinis and hosts comedy or poetry with low-key ease. The shift is seamless enough that nobody questions it, which might be the whole point.

  33. The ceramic logo bricks are for sale, and so is almost everything else in this coffee shop annexed to Carpet Company's Baltimore skateshop. The concrete counters were poured by a local artist, the C-star tiles commissioned in Egypt, and the lattes lean toward rose cardamom. Every skater and graffiti writer inside is either friends with Turnstile or working on it. Come for the coffee; leave quietly coveting the glass table with giant jacks for legs.

  35. A coffee shop on Shaw that sources its beans from roasters in Tokyo, Busan, and Zurich, while somehow remaining entirely free of the usual lecture about it. The Kenyan espresso pulls fruity and smooth in a way that sounds like marketing until it doesn't, and the twice-baked pistachio croissant draws a weekend line that moves faster than it looks. Families, first dates, and people quietly spending fifty dollars on a single bag of beans all coexist here without incident.

  36. A small espresso counter tucked into the side of a vintage clothing and furniture store, Earl serves coffee through a brick-inlaid window that connects the two spaces. Grab a seasonal flavored drink, then wander the racks next door, which is about as Nashville as an afternoon gets. The grab-and-go cooler stocks bites from a local caterer, worth checking before you leave.

  37. Rank 745. Eddie's Cafe

    American Coffee Shop

  38. A cafe and market the size of a generous toolshed on Coconut Grove's pedestrian strip, where a communal table out front has turned a 30-minute wait for a yuzu tuna sandwich and a cappuccino into a sunny Saturday ritual. The kitchen is small but restless, turning out whatever's seasonal alongside specialty pantry finds that will quietly devastate your budget. The crowd skews young and takes their sandwich symmetry seriously.

  39. Rank 745. Haan Coffee

    Korean Coffee Shop

A Korean coffee shop on Colonial Drive where the black sesame latte has quietly become the reason people plan their Saturday mornings. The team recently banned weekend wifi just to reclaim some seats, which tells you something about the crowd. Rotating drinks like toasted rice cold brew and chestnut tiramisu lattes keep the regulars cycling back, and the croffle, a croissant-waffle hybrid, gives people something to eat while they wait.

  42. Rank 745. Mee Sum Cafe

    Chinese Coffee Shop

  43. A tea room and cafe on the second floor of a Bowery building, reached by buzzing an unmarked door and climbing an industrial staircase. Neon gramophones, Togo couches, a vinyl listening room, and a DJ who drops in twice daily to play something like Boards of Canada on a sound system that did not come cheap. The MacBook presence is significant, but the Japanese teas and pastries give everyone a reasonable excuse to stay.

  44. Coffee arrives at Specs spiked with Cynar, corrected with maple cream liqueur, or topped with Angostura whipped cream, all from 8am. It's a coffee shop and daytime cocktail bar in Winooski, the former mill town next door to Burlington, where the crafty set debates linocut workshops in the sunny windows while big dreamers at the bar puzzle over how to dome the town rotary. When talks stall, the attached bev mart stocks 24-ounce Busch Ice and cigarettes.

  45. Metal band posters on the walls and distorted guitars blasting while someone brews the most delicate pour-overs in Williamsburg is the whole vibe at this small coffee shop. The owner sources from Brooklyn's Sey roastery and makes his own blends, and the result is coffee that tastes less like coffee than like the memory of a fruit. The drip is worth the trip on its own if you're not in a splurging mood.

  46. The baristas here treat coffee sourcing the way a sommelier treats a wine list, asking what you're in the mood for, floral or fruity, bright or nutty, and steering you toward something you wouldn't have ordered on your own. This sunny corner coffee shop in Philadelphia is genuinely tiny, and weekend lines of pourover devotees stretch down the block. The za'atar croissants disappear early, so arriving with time to spare is less advice than strategy.

  48. Rank 745. Yala Coffee

    Middle Eastern Coffee Shop

Sand coffee brewed over heated sand until frothy is the move here, and Yala is one of the only coffee shops in the city serving it. The Middle Eastern cafe on Sunset leans into fig matcha lattes and espresso-apricot tonics alongside the traditional stuff. It shares a block with a natural wine bar and a flea market, so the sidewalk patio fills with the kind of Silver Lake crowd that has strong opinions about both coffee and vintage denim.

  50. A coffee shop in Over-the-Rhine that roasts its own beans on-site, sourcing from family farms across South America and Africa. The decaf goes through a water-bath process that pulls the caffeine without gutting the flavor, which is a harder trick than it sounds. Good place to sit with a book and feel quietly virtuous about your afternoon cup.

  51. Haraz is a Yemeni coffee shop in East Nashville, part of a chain that has grown from one Dearborn storefront to dozens of locations. The draw is mufawar, a cardamom-infused coffee served hot or cold, plus Turkish coffee and a short pastry case with sweet and savory options. Order at the counter and ask questions, because the staff will happily explain anything unfamiliar. Nashville Scene named it Best Overlooked Coffee Shop.

  57. Rank 780. Music City Tea

    Chinese Coffee Shop

Music City Tea is a loose-leaf Chinese tea shop in an unassuming house in Murfreesboro, with shelves and tables crowded with pouches, bins, and tins. The owner sits you down and pours round after round through a gaiwan while explaining oolong versus green versus black, so plan on an hour and a mild caffeine tremor. Nashville Scene named it Best Intro to Tea in 2025, and you'll probably leave with a colorful gaiwan of your own.

  58. Retrograde is a bright, clean coffee shop in City Heights, and by midmorning it fills with the laptop crowd, the same remote workers who lost their last roost when a beloved Nations spot closed. They're easy to pardon, since the whipped feta and prosciutto toast tastes like a Germantown brunch with the reservation and the markup removed. Nashville Scene named it the best thing on toast in 2025.

  59. The coffee bar lives inside a furniture showroom, so you're welcome to settle into a display sofa while you drink. The thing that earns attention here is the cold foam, a thick mashed-banana crown with vanilla and agave that sits heavy on a latte or cold brew like it means business. Foam skeptics tend to announce, unprompted, that it tastes like banana pie on their coffee. They're not wrong.

  60. The Loading Dock is a coffee shop that lost its lease, went looking for a new home, and came back in the Buchanan Arts District with more room than before. Expect fun coffee creations next to the classics, High Garden teas, local art and plants for sale, and seating spread across two floors and a patio. Nashville Scene gave it Best Comeback, which is a fair category for a place that refused to just become condos.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
