Roman-style Pizzeria
Roman-style pizza cooked in electric deck ovens is the whole idea at this Andersonville neighborhood pizzeria, and the pies come out oblong, puffy, and blistered with a bubble-like crunch. The kitchen makes all its pasta in-house too, so this is more than a one-trick spot. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the unfussy room fills up fast with people who figured that out early.

Modern Vietnamese
Glass doors open into a bright, modern dining room on Belmont, fitted with a leather banquette and planters that look suspiciously well-tended. Sochi is a modern Vietnamese restaurant where the menu leans into careful sourcing and pho built on long-simmered bone broth. The Michelin Bib Gourmand crowd skews local and unhurried, the kind who know to save room for the cassava cake when it appears on the dessert card.

Traditional Mexican
Walls painted in tropical pinks, blues, and oranges set the tone at this traditional Mexican restaurant on Cicero, where Dia de los Muertos artifacts share space with live mariachi. The mole manchamanteles, whose name translates to "tablecloth stainer," earns the warning: mahogany-dark, nutty, and rich enough to demand every freshly made tortilla on the table. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of place that makes you wonder what you've been doing at lesser spots.

Rank 194. Sportsman’s Club
Cocktail Bar
Taxidermy on the walls, an Art Deco bar, and big comfy booths: Sportsman's Club is a neighborhood tavern that looks like it's been on Western Ave forever but drinks like something that arrived much more recently. The rotating menu leans spirit-forward and serious, even if the vibe emphatically does not. It's the kind of place that made this particular Chicago formula feel worth copying.

The name is lifted from a German fable, which tells you something about what you're in for. This Logan Square neighborhood restaurant does Alpine cooking in a rustic inn setting, with communal tables, an inviting bar, and a charcuterie selection long enough to be its own evening. The kitchen has a playful streak that runs all the way through to pretzel ice cream with jalapeño caramel. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

Rank 194. Union
American
Edison bulbs, dark wood, and long high tops set the tone at this gastropub in Logan Square, where the same team behind next-door Lardon turned their attention to dinner. The menu leans comfort without losing its nerve, running from fried cheese curds to shawarma-spiced chicken with flatbread. Craft beer gets serious treatment, with a locally sourced lineup. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and every table seems to have at least one cheeseburger on it.

A long, slow ferment gives the NY-style crust at this Montrose Avenue slice shop a chew and crispness that makes the whole thing feel intentional rather than accidental. Rank 211. Perilla Korean American Steakhouse
Steakhouse
Perilla is a Korean steakhouse tucked into a downtown Chicago hotel, where the staff cook the cuts on a grill at your table so you can supervise without technically lifting a finger. Wagyu and marinated short rib are the draw, but the Caesar with milk bread croutons and the Korean fried chicken keep the non-beef contingent fed. Since it's a hotel restaurant, steak and eggs start at 7 a.m. Eater lists it among Chicago's steakhouses.

Exposed brick, custom tile floors, and floor-to-ceiling wine storage fill what was once a 19th-century print shop, now a Michelin-starred fine dining room in the West Loop. Wine Enthusiast put the cellar in its Restaurant Hall of Fame, and the room's warm enough that you'd never know you were being impressed.

Stainless-steel plates land on the table the way they would at someone's home in Kerala, which is exactly the point. Thattu is a Keralan restaurant in Chicago where fish fries, coconut curries, and yogurt rice anchor the menu, and the appam, lacy rice-and-coconut domes, exist mostly to drag through whatever's left. The Tater Tots dusted in chaat masala read less like a gimmick and more like a clever raid on the pantry.

Rank 238. Pequod’s Pizza
Deep-dish Pizzeria
The move here is the caramelized crust, where cheese climbs the edge of the pan and turns amber in the oven, somewhere between crispy and deeply fragrant. Pequod's has been doing deep-dish this way since the 1970s, and the result is a pizza that's almost architectural: soft dough, abundant fillings, a bold, substantial bite. It's a no-frills Chicago pizzeria where getting a table takes patience and the slices arrive hot enough to require some too.

Fried chicken with mashed potatoes and hot sauce is the thing Art Smith is known for, and this Southern comfort restaurant at Navy Pier keeps it on the menu alongside buttermilk biscuits, deviled eggs, and fried green tomatoes. Smith cooked privately for celebrities before going public, and the cooking reads that way, crowd-pleasing but not careless. A casual, lively room where nobody is pretending they didn't come for the chicken.

The glass-enclosed rooftop dining room sits on top of a furniture showroom, which says a lot about Oak Brook and even more about RH's ambitions. Olive trees and a fountain give the room a garden-house feel, and the American menu runs from a burger to whole branzino, with shareable plates and composed salads filling the middle ground. It draws a dressed-up suburban crowd happy to linger over a long lunch with a view.

A ceiling mural of blue sky and clouds floats over white-tableclothed dining rooms spread across two floors, one block off the Magnificent Mile. This is a classic Italian-American restaurant, the kind where portions arrive larger than any reasonable person expected and the housemade pasta makes that very easy to forgive. Roasted chicken Vesuvio with red potatoes and white wine sauce is the move for the old-school contingent. Relaxed, prompt, and reliably generous.

The wood-burning oven does most of the talking at this upscale Greek taverna just off Logan Square Park, kissing nearly everything on the menu with smoke. Warm pita arrives with a lineup of dips, lamb chops come in serious portions, and the baklava froyo with pistachio sauce is the kind of thing you didn't see coming. The wine list runs entirely Greek, from Macedonia to Santorini, which takes a certain confidence.

Pan Mexican
Murals by street artist Senkoe climb the walls of this lively Pan-Mexican restaurant on a corner that the surrounding industrial stretch does nothing to prepare you for. Aqua-blue chairs, cement floors, and a DJ booth set the tone before the food arrives. The menu roams Mexico freely, and the kitchen has a flair for the dramatic. A whole grilled pineapple stuffed with octopus and Chihuahua cheese makes the point pretty quickly.

A tasting menu format in a cozy Ravenswood dining room where Cuban and Filipino cooking share the same plate, cooked by a husband-and-wife team working through both heritages on their own terms. Lebanese
Stone walls, an arched ceiling, and a lower level with its own fireplace make this Lebanese restaurant feel more like a Beirut cellar than a Fulton Market address. The bar pours cocktails built around arak and tahini for a shorter, looser visit.

A former billiard hall that now keeps the lights low and the candles lit, so it feels more like a speakeasy than a pool room, though nobody's chalking a cue. French
The velvet-curtained windows and chandelier glow of this French bistro on Taylor Street have been drawing nostalgic expats and neighborhood regulars for what feels like forever. The courtyard opens when Chicago allows it.

A steakhouse on the Chicago River where the windows actually earn their keep. The beef is butchered and dry-aged in-house, cooked over high heat until the crust is doing real work. Sides run the classic route, creamed spinach and potatoes, and the wine list is long enough to keep a table of deal-closers busy. Iberian Spanish
Named for M.F.K. Fisher, the great American food writer, this Iberian restaurant sits in a whitewashed, tile-lined basement on Diversey that somehow feels like a terrace in the sun.
