Cal's Country Kitchen is a meat-and-three on Dickerson Road, run by a son who shut down his own chicken-in-a-waffle-cone operation to take over his mother's old spot. The original sign made the move too, which is the kind of loyalty you can't fake. The menu lives on a handwritten board that changes daily, so plan on a line and a lunch you can't fully predict. Nashville Scene gave it Best Comeback in 2024.

A small chocolatier in Fountain Hills where the bonbons are the reason to make the drive. Louis and Denise Mirabella work in the bean-to-bar mode, making chocolate in-house, but the real draw is their bonbon range, which runs from classic cherry cordials and gianduja to passionfruit caramel and zinfandel ganache. The fillings hit with an intensity that makes each piece feel like it's been concentrated down to its purest form. Phoenix New Times named them best bonbons in 2024.

You pick your seafood by the pound, choose a sauce, and it all arrives with corn, sausage, and potatoes in a bag you basically attack at the table. Ohio is a long way from any coastline, but the place doesn't seem to notice. Cincinnati Magazine named its seafood boil the city's best in 2024.

The smell of jerk chicken charring over fire hits you before you reach the door, which is all the orientation you need. Cool Vybz is a no-frills Jamaican spot on the north side of Phoenix, the dining room strictly functional, the cooking anything but. The chef came up on the island and keeps the menu short: curry goat, oxtails, brown stew snapper. Phoenix New Times named it the city's top Caribbean restaurant in 2024, and the jerk alone makes a reasonable argument for why.

Phoenix New Times named it among the top 100 bars in the city.
