Aveiro gets called the Venice of Portugal enough that you'd expect it to be annoying, but the canals do hold up. This five-star hotel occupies an 18th-century palace whose original Moorish tilework, coffered ceilings, and neoclassical facade survived the renovation intact, while the rooms got polished parquet and floor-to-ceiling drapes. Each room is named for a character from Eça de Queiroz, the novelist who once lived here, and a reading room and courtyard pool complete the premise. One Michelin Key.

A working winery beside the Douro with seven rooms upstairs, essentially. The estate kept its old agricultural bones and wrapped them in clean, modern interiors, so you get stone walls and good linens rather than one or the other. Five rooms look straight out over the river, as does the infinity pool, which makes the other two a harder sell. Tastings and vineyard tours run on-site, and the restaurant leans on what the farm produces. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

Comporta has been called Portugal's answer to José Ignacio, which tells you everything about the rice fields, the beautiful people, and the prices. This 42-acre country retreat holds the Michelin Guide's 1 Key and keeps its aesthetic sharply restrained, concrete floors and a white-gray palette softened by petrified-wood nightstands and linen. Floor-to-ceiling windows pull the pine forest inside, and the better suites come with plunge pools and indoor-outdoor fireplaces.

Sleeping inside a wine barrel is less ridiculous than it sounds: Quinta da Pacheca converts decommissioned casks into snug pod cabins with terraces that look out over Douro Valley vineyards. The manor house also has traditional rooms for those who prefer walls that weren't recently holding Touriga Nacional. A Michelin Key property, it runs tastings, tours, cooking classes, and vineyard picnics, so the itinerary more or less writes itself before you've unpacked.

Ten rooms across four villas on a private pine-and-rice-field estate: Spatia Comporta is a small, secluded resort on Portugal's Atlantic coast, a short drive from Comporta's famously empty beaches. Interiors run to warm whites, natural wood, and floor-to-ceiling glass that folds the outdoors in. Two pools, a lavish breakfast, and Friday-through-Sunday dinners cover the basics. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

A boutique hotel on a working wine estate in the Douro Valley, where the oldest vineyards in the region press right up against rooms that look nothing like you'd expect, all pale wood, midcentury furniture, and private terraces with open-air soaking tubs. The glass-lined spa and infinity pool face the terraced hills straight on. Rank 210. Lupita Pizzaria
Neapolitan Pizzeria
A no-reservations pizzeria in Cais do Sodré where the dough ferments for two days and the crust arrives at the table properly airy and charred. The room is small with vintage stucco ceilings and a few tables outside, and a queue out front is the normal state of affairs. The combinations lean creative, the natural wines are short-listed but sensible, and the only dessert is a salted caramel cheesecake. Come prepared to wait.

Flowers turn up everywhere at this walled-garden estate hotel in Funchal, in the rooms against soft neutral furnishings, out in the gardens, visible through floor-to-ceiling glass from nearly every angle. Suites spill onto sun-drenched terraces overlooking the grounds. Dinner moves outside by moonlight in summer. Madeira draws a quieter crowd for a reason, and Quinta da Casa Branca, holding a Michelin Key, leans into that without apology.

The rooftop pool here looks out over Faro's city-center rooftops rather than any beach, which tells you most of what you need to know about this urban resort. A hundred-odd rooms and suites, some with jacuzzis on private terraces, sit alongside a spa with an indoor pool, sauna, and Turkish bath. Two restaurants cover Italian and Algarve-meets-Mediterranean. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key. Beach towns rarely pull off "resort" without the beach, but the city is walkable from the door.

A former Catholic boys' school turned 20-room boutique hotel, which says a lot about changing priorities on the Algarve. The rooms mix antiques and contemporary eclecticism, and the old building's bones mean every layout is different. Private pools punctuate the property, the chef runs a daily set-menu Surprise Dinner from market ingredients, and the Michelin Guide awarded it one Key. The beds are shaped like wine barrels, which sounds gimmicky until you're lying in one staring out floor-to-ceiling windows at terraced Douro vineyards falling toward the river. This Michelin Key luxury wine hotel curves along the hillside above Armamar, with a rooftop infinity pool that does a reasonable impression of a private aircraft. The spa works locally grown grapes into its treatments, and the restaurant pours from the adjacent quinta's own cellar.

Perched on a clifftop in the Serra da Estrela, this chalet-style hotel looks like a Wes Anderson set decorator raided a Scandinavian design fair and relocated to Portugal's highest mountain range. Cork, birch, and wool sourced locally give the rooms warmth without the rustic-lodge cliché, and picture windows make the mountains inescapable. The glass-enclosed heated pool and Nordic bath lean into the drama. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

A shepherd's cottage and a 19th-century stone house on the western slope of Serra da Estrela, expanded and fitted out into a 15-room luxury boutique hotel where some suites have freestanding bathtubs aimed at the valley below. Wood and stone keep the rooms from going too cold, a library has a concrete reading nook that's cozier than it sounds, and the spa runs to an indoor pool, two outdoor pools, and a natural waterfall on the property. A rocky promontory just outside Cascais, forty minutes from Lisbon, where Portuguese royalty once spent their summers, is home to this small, traditional hotel spread across a cluster of conjoined houses and a late 18th-century palace. Fewer than fifty rooms vary in shape and outlook, some facing the gardens, some the beach below. The look is old-world seaside: soft colors, antiques, quality reproductions. Breakfast should involve seafood, and so should dinner.

A 16th-century coastal fortress with cobblestone courtyards and old stone walls turned 126-room hotel, sitting right on the Cascais waterfront. The whitewashed rooms are bright and minimal; the ones with balconies put you close enough to the harbor breeze to feel it. Several restaurants and bars keep things lively without trying too hard, and the lobby bar, presided over by a sculpture of 600 swallows, sets a tone that's stylish without being stiff.

The blue and white azulejo tiles framing reception set the tone: this boutique hotel in Cascais occupies a handsomely converted old villa steps from the bay, with rooms painted in single bold colors and gold accents bouncing off polished parquet. Ian Fleming and a rotating cast of European royalty once played in this town, and the place leans into that legacy. Boat tours, wine tastings, and golf can all be arranged, and two restaurants handle dinner.

- #235 Quinta da Arrábida 69.0
-
Three generations of the same family have been tending the cork oaks, olive trees, and free-range chickens on this private farmland inside Arrábida Natural Park. It's a rural estate hotel, split between a five-bedroom manor house and three smaller cottages that can be taken separately or together. The manor leans elegant; the wood-oven cabins lean rustic. Either way, Portugal's clearest coastline is a few minutes downhill.

A 19th-century family manor outside Penafiel, about half an hour from Porto, that blurs the line between guesthouse and staying with very well-organized friends. Ten traditionally furnished rooms, a pool, and a wine-tasting enoteca handle the hotel side of things, while the owners run embroidery workshops, lead countryside hikes, and will personally collect you from Porto if you ask nicely.

Five suites total, tucked into Serra da Arrábida south of Lisbon, which tells you most of what you need to know: this is a small eco-resort where the headcount is low by design. The rooms face outward toward the landscape, breakfast is made to order, and the chef also runs cooking classes and dinners. Days fill with hiking, surfing, or winery visits. The philosophy is Epicurean in the original sense, pleasures kept honest rather than maximalist.

A private pier marks the edge of this contemporary resort, built into a forested hillside exactly 41 kilometers up the Douro from Porto, which is how it got its name. The 56 rooms and 5 suites lean modern and minimalist, softened by antique chandeliers and bursts of color. Two restaurants, an indoor-outdoor pool setup, a spa, and a wine bar fill the hours when the staff hasn't already booked you onto a sailboat or into a winery.

The 18-hole oceanfront golf course is the whole reason this resort exists, and on a clear Atlantic day the argument is hard to dismiss. Eighty freestanding timber lodges sit among landscaped grounds north of Porto, each with a private terrace. Green's Restaurant handles modern Portuguese cooking from breakfast to dinner, and there's a wellness center and direct beach access for anyone who left the clubs at home.

The name is a promise the address keeps: this apartment-style boutique hotel sits within walking distance of Praia do Sul beach in Ericeira, Portugal's designated surf reserve. The 36 fully serviced apartments run from studios up to five-bedroom spreads, and the hotel adds a spa, heated indoor pool, and a restaurant tied to a well-known Lisbon kitchen. Lisbon is under an hour away, but the Atlantic tends to win the argument.

Dinner only, two tasting menus, and a kitchen that treats obscure ingredients and "food of the future" concepts as its native language. This is a creative tasting-menu restaurant in Lisbon's Bairro Alto, where the chef weaves Bosnian references through a distinctly Portuguese framework in ways that somehow feel less eccentric on the plate than they sound on paper. A vegetarian menu runs alongside the main, and both come with alcoholic or non-alcoholic pairings.

Portuguese Seafood
The setup here is almost too simple: pick your fish from a stall in the Matosinhos Municipal Market, hand it over, and let the kitchen grill it. This casual seafood spot is the informal offshoot of the fine-dining Vila Foz, and the cooking stays deliberately out of the way, letting whatever came off the boats that morning do the talking. The signature roast arrives with crackling skin, wafer-thin chips, salad, and the house leitão sauce. Salt cod, duck rice, and a suckling-pig bean stew fill out a menu that doesn't stray far from the classics. Spacious, light-filled rooms and a well-stocked wine cellar complete the picture.

Portuguese Seafood
A wooden sculpture of a giant ray hangs over the dining room, which tells you everything about where José Avillez's most sea-forward restaurant wants your head to be. Perched between Guincho and Cascais with views to match, it's a seafood restaurant built around ultra-fresh fish displayed in an open kitchen. The menu leans into the Portuguese coast with the kind of confidence that doesn't need explaining.

Portuguese Seafood
The building is shaped like a boat, which feels either very on-brand or slightly too literal depending on your tolerance for themed architecture. Inside, this seafood restaurant spreads across two floors with nautical décor that stays on the tasteful side of maritime kitsch. A display of fresh fish and shellfish greets you at the door. The menu leans hard into the sea, with rice dishes, grilled fish, bacalhau, and a seafood açorda stew sharing space with a few solid meat options.

Omakase Japanese
Fourteen seats total, ten of them at the counter facing the kitchen, is the whole footprint of this omakase spot near Parque Eduardo VII. The chef builds the menu around fish from Setúbal, Nazareth, and the Azores, so the selection shifts with what those waters are doing. It's intimate in the way that means you will absolutely hear your neighbor's conversation, and they'll hear yours.

A residential address on the outskirts of Nogueira that you could easily mistake for a house, if not for the terrace and gardens out front. Inside, it's a proper sit-down restaurant serving traditional Minho cooking, the kind where certain dishes, roast cockerel, cozido, charcoal-grilled kid goat, need a 24-hour call ahead because they're built from scratch. Seafood
The nautical lines of this seafood restaurant on the Estrada do Guincho have been a fixture along the Guincho coast for as long as anyone can remember, all pale wood and light tones with the Atlantic close enough to justify everything on the menu. Fish and shellfish from the region are the whole point, and the wine cellar running beneath the building is quietly enormous. Sharing menus are available for two, though regulars tend to know the room well enough to order without looking.

A U-shaped counter and a short menu of Alentejo cooking near the Museu Nacional dos Coches, which means you're sharing elbow room with people who came for royal carriages and stayed for duck rice. An open kitchen faces the square at one end of Praça da República, where the Ave river sets a backdrop that does most of the decorating. This casual modern restaurant is chef Paulo André's project, and the cooking leans hard on local vegetables, fish, and meat, with enough vegetarian options to make that explicit rather than incidental. When the sun cooperates, the terrace earns its place in the decision. Informal enough that nobody's keeping score on your outfit.

Pan-Asian
Dark-toned rooms, an open kitchen, and a counter for cocktails set the mood at this casual fusion restaurant near Praça Marquês de Pombal. The chef came home after years in international kitchens and brought the flavors with him, folding Asian technique into Central American instincts across a shareable à la carte menu or a few tasting menu formats.
