The Best Places in the United States

All, change section
  1. The lighthouse at the southern tip of Key Biscayne has been standing since before anyone alive can remember, and climbing its 109 steps earns you a view that explains why people keep moving to Miami. Bill Baggs is a state park with serious birding credentials, over 260 species spotted inside its boundaries, plus barbecue grills, a cafe, and enough white sand to make the drive across the causeway feel like a reasonable life choice.

  2. Thirty bar stations, live bull riding, and a floor big enough that two-steppers never have to negotiate for elbow room: Billy Bob's Texas is the kind of honky tonk that makes the word feel undersized. The building spent earlier lives as a cattle barn and an airplane factory before finding its calling as a live music and dancing venue. Willie Nelson's Fourth of July picnic has landed here. Wear boots; you'll feel underdressed without them.

  3. Ninety-five percent of Biscayne National Park is water, which makes it the rare national park where the main thing to do is go under. The Florida Reef is the only living coral barrier reef in the continental U.S., and the Biscayne Maritime Heritage Trail strings together historic shipwrecks you reach by boat. If staying dry matters, a boat tour covers Stiltsville's strange stilted homes and the old lighthouse on uninhabited Boca Chita Key.

  5. The smell of aging paper hits you before you've found a shelf to browse. Book Gallery is an antiquarian bookshop stacked floor to ceiling with rare volumes, first editions, and signed works, some behind glass. A Harper Lee-signed "To Kill a Mockingbird" and a first printing of "Naked Lunch" give a sense of the range. If the specific thing you're hunting isn't here, the owner can usually track it down.

  6. Blacklight lanes, craft cocktails, and a Skee-Ball machine are all doing equal work here, which tells you what kind of bowling alley this is. Bowlero's Scottsdale spot near Old Town leans hard into the party-night format, with arcade classics and a food menu that runs from nachos to birria tacos. It's the kind of place where a date night can quietly become a group outing, and nobody minds.

  7. Guitar repair and setup shop run by a luthier who is also a working musician, which turns out to matter. John Bronson has set up acoustics and electrics for the Gin Blossoms, Billy Corgan, and Roger Clyne, and when Geddy Lee's bass needed work, Fender routed it here. Beyond repairs, he understands how an instrument should feel and sound after adjustments, not just how to tighten the screws. Half the visit is talking gear with the staff, which is either a feature or a warning depending on your schedule.

  8. A sprawling music shop on the Carpenter Freeway that stocks everything from orchestral French horns to electric guitars, Brook Mays/H&H Music is the kind of place where a parent buying a student's first rental flute ends up next to someone hunting a vintage find. The repair shop keeps it practical. If your kid is starting band this fall, this is probably where the school director pointed you.

  9. Rank 17355. Brown's Diner

    American Diner

  10. A chest-high sea of pink balloons is probably not how you pictured spending a Tuesday, and yet here you are. Bubble Planet is an immersive walk-through attraction inside Arizona Mills Mall with a psychedelic sound-and-visuals dome, a mirrored infinity room strung with blinking lights, and a ball pit styled as a giant bubble bath. Bring your own socks or you'll pay mall-kiosk prices for a pair at the door.

  11. The trail starts flat along the shoreline and then climbs the cliffs above Saguaro Lake, where the views keep getting better the higher you go. This five-mile out-and-back north of Phoenix is easygoing enough that you can spend most of it looking at the water rather than your feet. A side path partway along drops to the shoreline for a wade, and Burro Cove at the far end opens up to Four Peaks in the distance.

  12. Alpacas are not llamas, and the owner of this family farm north of Phoenix will tell you so, cheerfully, before you've even met the herd. During cooler months, small groups can feed, pet, and walk the animals on a leash across the property. The alpacas tolerate photos with the patience of minor celebrities who have made peace with their fame. A casual, outdoor animal encounter, and a good excuse to finally learn the difference.

  13. Phoenix logs more sunny flying days than almost anywhere, which explains why the metro supports over forty aviation schools. CAE stands out by skipping the small-Cessna rite of passage: their simulator-based training puts you at the controls of a Boeing 737NG or an Embraer before you ever touch the real thing. The kind of place where weekend hobby shades into a second career, whether you know it yet or not.

  14. Rank 17355. Cafe Balkan

    Eastern European

The bureks sell out before the lunch rush is over, which tells you something about this family-run Balkan restaurant in north Phoenix. The menu runs to exactly the kind of southeastern European comfort food that improves overnight, including a goulash with mashed potatoes that does most of its best work as leftovers. Silky veal soup, warm lepinja flatbread, and a pastry case for dessert round out a meal that requires zero willpower to finish.

  17. A massive antique mall in Mesa where you can lose an entire afternoon without noticing. The stock runs from vintage furniture and jewelry to old maps, cookware, and the kind of tchotchkes that somehow feel essential in the moment. Prices stay low and the inventory turns constantly, so repeat visits rarely feel redundant. Bring comfortable shoes and no particular agenda, and expect to leave with something you cannot explain.

  20. Central Market is a grocery store that programs its sound system the way a record collector programs a party, pulling obscure B-sides and local finds between the funk grooves and jazzy lo-fi. The mix shifts with in-store themes, so the playlist on a given Tuesday is not an accident. It won a Dallas Observer Best of Dallas nod for it, which says something about how low the bar is everywhere else.

  23. Sports memorabilia covers every surface here, bathrooms included, because half-measures are for people who don't care. Named for a beloved late Nuggets trainer, this Cherry Creek sports bar has been around forever and carries that weight lightly. The menu sits a notch above standard bar fare, and the TVs outnumber the regulars on a slow night. When the Nuggets are playing, there is nowhere more logical to be.

  24. The "Quiet Please" signs posted around the grounds tell you exactly what CIVANA is going for. This wellness resort in the Sonoran Desert outside Carefree runs a full calendar of classes, from aerial yoga and barre to guided meditation and cacao ceremonies, plus a spa and two restaurants leaning healthy. A day pass works if an overnight feels like too much commitment, though the drive alone starts doing some of the work.

  25. Cooking classes in Scottsdale where you leave with recipes, technique, and, if the timing works out, a container of leftovers. The academy has been around forever, running small-group sessions that range from a single afternoon on pizza or barbecue to multi-week deep dives into whole cuisines. Instructors teach proper knife work and the kind of baking that actually scares people, then let you cook and eat the results yourself.

  26. A pastel-colored claw machine arcade in Chandler stocked with 24 machines and the kind of prizes collectors actually want: Pop Mart blind boxes, Smiski statues, Sonny Angels. Staff hype up players before every pull, snap a Polaroid when you land something good, and quietly help the kids who keep coming up short. Bring a few dollars more than you plan to spend.

  27. Dim lighting and espresso martinis set the mood at this Fitzhugh Avenue lounge, where the booths are deep enough to hide in but the vibe is too convivial for anyone to bother. Clifton Club lands somewhere between chic cocktail bar and neighborhood regular haunt, sophisticated without making you feel underdressed. The Dallas Observer named it the best place to meet your next ex, which is either a warning or an itinerary depending on your recent history.

  28. Close Company is a cocktail bar in the Neuhoff District, a Nashville outpost of New York's Death & Co., set in a big, open, colorful adaptive-reuse space. The menu favors familiar drinks with a twist, like a Bitter Melon Negroni, and the Wray & Ting pairs Jamaican rum with grapefruit soda. Food comes out of a cubby counter you retrieve it from yourself. Ordering a vodka tonic here is a bold way to announce yourself. Nashville Scene named it Best New Bar in 2025.

  30. The row of finished Louis Vuitton and Gucci bags hanging behind the counter tells you everything about the clientele and the confidence level here. Cobbler's Den is a shoe and luggage repair shop that handles everything from resoling to refinishing to dyeing, offers free estimates upfront, and will tell you plainly when something is past saving. Fair prices, no runaround, and a Phoenix New Times Best of Phoenix pick for shoe repair.

  31. A coffee shop in Over-the-Rhine that roasts its own beans on-site, sourcing from family farms across South America and Africa. The decaf goes through a water-bath process that pulls the caffeine without gutting the flavor, which is a harder trick than it sounds. Good place to sit with a book and feel quietly virtuous about your afternoon cup.

  33. The Copenhagen Imports clearance annex near the Glendale border is where the scratch-and-dent furniture from that vast showroom on Camelback goes to find a more price-conscious home. Lamps, rugs, dining sets, and nightstands all land here marked down for cosmetic flaws that are often hard to locate even when you're looking. The staff will hand you a screwdriver so you can investigate before committing, which is a gracious policy for a furniture store and a suspicious one for a scratch-and-dent operation.

  34. There's a lake here, which for most dogs is reason enough to lose their minds entirely. Cosmo Dog Park in Gilbert is a sprawling off-leash park with a swim-ready lake, a separate fenced area for smaller or shyer dogs, an agility course for overachievers, shaded ramadas, and water stations throughout. It's a full afternoon, not just a quick lap around a fenced lot, and Phoenix New Times named it the best dog park in the city.

  39. A scruffy, beloved Deep Ellum music venue that's been around forever, Club Dada runs on a DIY ethos that still feels earned rather than curated. The room is small enough that a 15-minute set from an unknown local act can genuinely change someone's night. If you want to find the next interesting Dallas musician before everyone else does, this is where you start looking.

  41. A comedy club tucked into Desert Ridge Marketplace, where the parking is genuinely abundant and every seat sits close enough to make a headliner feel like a favor. SNL veterans and social media comics cycle through regularly. The specialty cocktails, each themed to whoever's on stage that night, are a nice touch that beats the usual well-drink situation. Copper Blues next door handles the after-show if you're not ready to call it.

  42. A mom-and-daughter herb shop and wellness studio in Chandler where you can buy a chest rub that actually helps you breathe, a bug-repelling oil blend, and teas and lotions from small producers, then come back on a weekend to make chocolate or herbal mocktails from scratch. The classes range from mushroom deep-dives to all-day medicine-making sessions. The whole place smells the way you wish your kitchen did.

  43. A nursery in central Phoenix that pulls off the rare trick of making you forget there's a six-lane road ten feet away. Plants line wide pathways that invite slow wandering, the indoor shop has pottery and art worth stopping for, and a weekend coffee pop-up means you can browse with something warm in hand. Staff meets you wherever you land on the plant-knowledge spectrum, and occasional events keep the regulars coming back.

  44. Doral Central Park's skatepark sits inside a sprawling 78-acre public park with kayaking, beach volleyball, and an outdoor amphitheater, which is either a lot of amenities or a very ambitious Tuesday. The concrete is fresh, the rails are properly grindy, and after school the place fills with teenagers doing exactly what teenagers should be doing outdoors. Disney Channel vibes, but the skating is the real thing.

  45. Dos Cabezas WineWorks sits in the rolling grasslands of Sonoita, Arizona's wine country, making rosé from Rhone varieties grown on their own vineyards. The Pink leans pale and fruit-forward but carries enough backbone from garnacha, syrah, and graciano to hold its own against grilled meat and charcuterie. A canned sparkling version exists for those who prefer their wine adventure-ready. Phoenix New Times has named it the best Arizona rosé two years running.

  46. A comic shop in Glendale sitting on tens of thousands of titles across every genre, plus a deep back-issue inventory for the hunters. The staff will hold you hostage in conversation about the latest manga wave or the return of Marvel's Ultimate line, and they seem genuinely pleased to do it. Toys, T-shirts, and over 150 posters round out the shelves, and the occasional game night or artist signing gives regulars a reason to show up even after they've bought everything they wanted.

  47. A mile-and-a-half paved path cutting through the Phoenix Mountain Preserve, Dreamy Draw is where the city comes to jog, bike, and pretend the heat is fine. Boulders break up the trail for anyone who needs a dignified excuse to stop, and drinking fountains appear often enough that you won't have to choose between cardio and survival. It opens at five in the morning, which makes it a genuinely good place to catch the sunrise before the desert decides to cook you.

  48. Psychic readings, lights-out museum tours, and Victorian seances hosted by a local spiritualist named Flitter Mouse: East Valley Paranormal runs a haunted museum and ghost-hunting operation in downtown Mesa that treats October as a suggestion, not a deadline. Neighborhood ghost tours go by way of Day of the Dead-themed rideable animals, which is a sentence that shouldn't work but does. Open to skeptics, believers, and everyone still deciding.

  51. Nine outdoor pickleball courts sit inside a sprawling indoor-outdoor complex with cabanas, firepits, a DJ, and a bar that takes mocktails as seriously as cocktails. The crowd skews young enough that nobody here grew up watching their grandparents play. When the courts fill up, bocce, cornhole, and table tennis keep the restless busy. The globally inspired menu runs breakfast through sushi, pizza, and tacos, so nobody goes hungry between games.

  52. Three outdoor basketball courts sit inside a sprawling desert park just north of downtown, and the nets, backboards, and paint are all in shape, which is rarer on free public courts than it should be. Pickup games happen, but there's room to run drills alone without waiting anyone out. The park around them adds a pool, bike paths along ponds, and a nine-hole golf course, so a full afternoon assembles itself without much planning.

  53. A 15-mile paved loop cuts through the sawgrass, and at the far end an observation tower puts the whole river of grass beneath you in one sweep. Shark Valley is the Everglades entrance closest to Miami, reachable in under an hour, with trails for walking or renting a bike and enough alligators sunning on the path to make you reconsider the bike. The city evaporates fast out here, which is the whole point.

  55. Serious lap swimmers fill all eight lanes before sunrise, so the fit retirees queuing at the gate before 6 a.m. know exactly what they're doing. This public pool in Flamingo Park runs every day, holidays included, with Ocean Rescue crews doing dawn drills beside casual weekend floaters. A kiddie pool, lounge chairs, and hot showers round it out, and the surrounding park adds a track and outdoor gym for anyone who wasn't already tired.

  56. A gas station liquor store that actually gives you something to browse, Food & Things pairs Shell fuel and a solid six-pack selection with a snack and treat aisle deep enough to lose track of time in. The quirky range of goods skews more corner-store-with-personality than pit stop, and the whole operation runs with the easy warmth of a place that would rather keep you than just move you through.

  57. A retrofitted vending machine that dispenses original art for $5 a pull sits in the lobby of FOUND:RE Phoenix hotel downtown. The Art-o-mat project converts defunct machines into small-art dispensaries, stocking them with polymer clay earrings, tiny paintings, and whatever else artists send in. There are only two in the Valley, so the bar for feeling culturally enriched is refreshingly low this week.

  58. A red-lit LED path winds through Markham Park to a small dome where volunteer astronomers from the South Florida Amateur Astronomers Association let you look through their telescopes on cloudless Saturday nights. Light pollution from six million neighbors does its worst, but Saturn's rings tend to win the argument. The volunteers outside bring their own gear and seem genuinely delighted to explain what you're seeing. Free, unhurried, and a little wonderful.

  59. Rank 17355. Frenchie's

    French

  60. Mat-based Pilates studio where the infrared heat is cranked up and the playlist runs Bad Bunny into Adele without apology. The aesthetic lands somewhere between Tulum spa and a very tidy minimalist bedroom, all neutral tones and Bala weights arranged just so. Group classes mix Pilates and sculpt and are built to work across levels, so no one's just decorating the back row. The sustainably sourced water bottles are a nice touch, or a very on-brand one.

  61. Free tables, complimentary water, and a posted code of conduct that explicitly covers hygiene: Gamers Guild AZ is a tabletop gaming store and lounge that has thought hard about why these spaces go wrong and decided to do the opposite. The North Phoenix location runs to an enormous footprint with private lounges, quiet rooms, and an in-house bar. A massive library of board, card, and tabletop games is available to play or buy, and the ban-hammer is real.

  62. Milk crates of used vinyl occasionally block the aisles here, which tells you everything about the organizational philosophy. Ghost of Eastside Records is an old-school Tempe record shop where browsing is really excavating, and you come in hunting a Sun Ra reissue and leave with an armful of Thelonious Monk. The selection runs from punk to local indie releases to VHS tapes. Go with time to spare and no fixed agenda.

  64. A record store that decided to become a hardcore and heavy metal venue, and the local scene decided right back. The space is small, the sound is loud, and the crowd shows up ready to mosh. Bands like Tactosa and Implosive Disgorgence have played here alongside local acts, and the annual Sweat Fest TX does exactly what the name suggests. Gritty, consistent, and absolutely not for the noise-averse.

  65. Haraz is a Yemeni coffee shop in East Nashville, part of a chain that has grown from one Dearborn storefront to dozens of locations. The draw is mufawar, a cardamom-infused coffee served hot or cold, plus Turkish coffee and a short pastry case with sweet and savory options. Order at the counter and ask questions, because the staff will happily explain anything unfamiliar. Nashville Scene named it Best Overlooked Coffee Shop.

  66. Reclining seats, genuine leg room, and a full bar serving cocktails make this Scottsdale multiplex feel less like a trip to the cinema and more like a minor lifestyle upgrade. Harkins Camelview 14 runs blockbusters alongside art house titles, and the outdoor patio pulls double duty as a pre-show gathering spot and, during cooler months, an actual screening venue. Phoenix New Times named it the valley's top luxury movie theater in 2025.

  67. A letterpress studio and stationery shop tucked into the Bragg's Pie Factory complex on Grand Avenue, where the walls are papered with local artists' prints and vintage concert posters. You can buy cards, notebooks, and coasters off the shelf, commission custom work, or roll up your sleeves in a printing workshop. A free print in the newspaper stand by the door has a way of making the decision for you.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
