  1. Rank 10700. TOKIO

    Japanese Noodle Shop

The broths here spend serious time extracting collagen and fat from pork and chicken, and you can taste the commitment. Tokio is a ramen shop that also does sushi and small plates, but the noodle bowls are the main event. The chef trained in Japan specifically for this, and the menu runs from traditional to a cream-and-cheese Cremoso Diablo that sounds dubious until it doesn't. Westword has named it Denver's top ramen two years running.

  2. A gas station kitchen in West Campus that somehow renders the question "what do you want to eat?" basically unanswerable, because the menu covers Mexican food, deli sandwiches, breakfast, hot dogs, and burgers without flinching. The burritos are massive, the tacos come street-style, and the sandwiches run Boar's Head meats on sourdough with house chipotle mayo. A reliable feed before, after, or instead of whatever else you had planned.

  3. A "birds of a feather read together" mural greets you at this queer-, woman-, and veteran-owned indie bookshop in Brentwood, where the vibe is cheerful and the selection is deliberate. Regular programming runs from local author readings to Banned Book Drag Queen Story Time, which tells you pretty much everything about where this shop stands. Families with kids who should be in rooms where books are celebrated, not side-eyed, tend to find their people here.

  4. A cookie cart parked at the Webberville Food Truck Park, where the rotating drops mean the selection changes often enough to justify returning before you've digested your lunch. The chocolate chip comes with sea salt, the Hot Honey Cornbread brings a little heat, and previous runs have included a Fruity Pebble Cheesecake Cookie that people still talk about with an air of grief. One cookie is technically shareable. Most people leave with several.

  5. A nursery built around the fact that some plants eat things. Carnivero grows carnivorous and tropical rarities in custom greenhouses west of Austin, with a conservation mission focused on species that are quietly disappearing in the wild. Pitcher plants, flytraps, and stranger things fill the space, priced from beginner-friendly to serious-collector auction territory. Their Instagram is worth a scroll before you visit, so you know what you're getting yourself into.

  7. A former church that never quite stopped being one, Cherrywood Center now holds Sunday services and indie rock shows in the same reverberant sanctuary. The vibe is deeply DIY, the acoustics are a happy accident, and the crowd skews young enough to have no memory of what the building used to be. Austin's The Austin Chronicle named it Best Church-Turned-DIY Stage.

  8. Rank 10702. Coquito

    Caribbean

The little neon sign out front is easy to miss, but the Kelly green interior and relic-inspired decor make up for it fast. Coquito is a Latin fusion cafe on East Seventh that runs a day-to-night double life: cold brew spiked with coquito and tortas by afternoon, DJs and a packed dance floor after dark. The name comes from Puerto Rico's traditional Christmas drink, which tells you something about the warmth of the place in general.

  10. A bookshop and cafe tucked into Hyde Park's old post office building, First Light keeps a well-curated shelf of fiction and a staff that actually reads the stock. The kids' section pulls in neighborhood families, while the sidewalk tables out front turn into a slow-afternoon situation: cortado, a novel, neighbors you didn't mean to talk to for forty minutes. Readings with local and touring authors fill the calendar regularly.

  12. Every item in this Midtown thrift shop costs $3, no exceptions, no asterisks. The founder started Heartening after watching quality clothes disappear into dumpsters, and the mission has stayed blunt: get clothing back into the community as cheaply as possible. A free outdoor clothing stand extends the idea for anyone who needs it. You can leave with an armload for less than you'd spend on lunch, which is either depressing commentary on lunch prices or a very good Tuesday.

  13. Rows of abandoned trailers and sprawling walls serve as the canvas at this open-air graffiti park near the airport, where spray paint is both the medium and the curriculum. Weekly demos and hands-on classes make it less spectator sport than working studio, and a gift shop stocks stencils and cans for anyone ready to stop watching. The cafe handles the lattes while the walls handle everything else.

  14. Rank 10702. JW’s Kitchen

    Southern American

  15. Rank 10702. Komé

    Contemporary Sushi

  16. A matcha truck parked near UT that grew out of its co-founder's cancer recovery, which is about as meaningful an origin story as a café can have. Ceremonial-grade matcha is the baseline, with rotating flavors like pistachio and rose moving through quickly among students and regulars. In a city where food trucks are practically a civic institution, this one keeps the vibe calm and the drinks deeply, conspicuously green.

  17. A cafe and bar where the grounds do half the work: twenty tree species, a working garden, and a stream running through a South Austin property that makes it surprisingly easy to justify a third coffee. The team behind Veracruz All Natural and DEE DEE partnered up here, so the food skews Mexican and Thai alongside the cafe menu. Come for the laptop-friendly shade, stay because it turns into a bar once the afternoon earns it.

  18. Rank 10702. Lynny's

    Bakery

Sixties decor and biscuits are the whole agenda at this kitschy East Austin cafe. The brick-and-mortar on East 12th is the sit-down sibling to a food truck, and it earns its slow-brunch crowd with diner coffee that won't punish you and biscuits that split into sweet and savory directions depending on your mood. A place designed for lingering, which, in a city that keeps speeding up, is a minor act of defiance.

  19. Rank 10702. Oken

    Japanese

  20. Rank 10702. Old Jerusalem

    Middle Eastern

The wood-fired oven handles both meat skewers and cheesy pizza pies, which tells you this Northwest Hills Middle Eastern spot has range. Hummus, falafel, baba ghanouj, and shawarma anchor the menu, and the breakfast service alone sets it apart from the usual halal shortlist. The bright, patio-fronted room draws soccer watch parties and families in equal measure, which means it's already building the kind of regulars that take years to earn.

  21. The pool table shares the room with people in stilettos, which tells you most of what you need to know about Parley. It's a neighborhood bar on East Cesar Chavez run by two Irishmen who seem unbothered by the idea that a bar can be dim and comfortable and also genuinely cool. Screens handle both the big game and arthouse film. The drinks run strong, the food leans comfort with a global detour, and the dress code is apparently optional.

  23. The doorman at this South Congress honky-tonk doubles as librarian, keeping a bartop lending shelf stocked with Stephen King, political memoirs, and science fiction, each copy embossed with his own face. Rod Gator, self-described rock-and-roll Mr. Rogers, curates the whole thing between metal gigs and solo sets. It is a deeply specific cultural artifact, and Sagebrush would not have it any other way.

  26. Rank 10702. The Lost Well

    Dive Bar

The address, a half-address on Airport, tells you something about the attitude before you walk in. The Lost Well is a punk rock bar and live music venue that relocated from Webberville when the landlord's patience ran out, and the new room landed so naturally it feels like the place was always here. Bigger than before, still loud, still dive-y in all the right ways, it draws a crowd that knows every band on the bill without checking the poster.

  28. A newsstand painted in bold royal blue on West Fifth, TOMO Mags stocks curated print titles spanning style, design, sport, and cultural niche-ery that most algorithm-driven feeds would never surface. The founder road-tested the concept at markets and pop-ups before landing a brick-and-mortar, so the selection already has a point of view. For anyone who still believes a magazine is an argument worth having on paper.

  30. Betty Boop memorabilia, kitty cat pillows, and lipstick lamps make up the decor at this South First vintage shop, which is itself half the shopping experience. Very Cherry Vintage specializes in the pink-and-red end of retro femininity, the kind of stuff that used to take serious thrifting to track down. Owner Ashley curated a room that looks like a mood board came to life, in the best possible way for anyone who prefers their secondhand finds with a little theatrics.

  31. A 13-mile trail running through South Austin where Barton Creek's dry limestone bed meets shaded canyon walls and enough forking paths to make you genuinely question your navigation skills. The Hill Country Conservancy built it out to connect near Barton Springs, so you can walk from the city into something that feels nothing like it. Bring water, because the Texas sun is not a metaphor, and a downloaded map, because the trail markers are optimistic at best.

  32. The Wishbone Bridge finally closes the loop on the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail, replacing a white-knuckle sidewalk wedged between traffic and a long drop into the Colorado River with a proper pedestrian bridge over the lake. Cyclists and evening walkers now get an unobstructed sunset view where the old Longhorn Dam crossing used to test their nerves. The Austin Chronicle named it the best spot for a sunset stroll in 2026, and the case is hard to argue.

  33. Rank 10702. York Street Collective

    Indian Cocktail Bar

  34. Holographic dinosaurs roam the floor at Zoocade, a family entertainment venue that bills itself as the nation's first holographic zoo. The tech, from Axiom Holographics, puts you among T. rexes, ocean depths, and African savanna wildlife without anyone getting eaten, which the movie franchise never quite managed. Classic arcade games fill out the day when the dinos get old, which, judging by the kids, takes a while.

  35. Mission Bay sits between Oracle Park and Chase Center, which tells you something about who's sleeping here on weekends. LUMA is a 299-room hotel where the design leans hard into art and culture, so the lobby doesn't feel like a sports-fan crash pad even when it kind of is one. The new Central Subway puts Union Square and Chinatown within a short ride, making the neighborhood feel less remote than the address suggests.

  36. A motor lodge in Presidio Heights that traded the freeway aesthetic for sea-glass green walls and mid-century side tables. The Laurel Inn is a small hotel on a quiet residential stretch, close enough to the Presidio trails and Sacramento Street boutiques to feel genuinely local, far enough from downtown to actually sleep. Some rooms come with kitchenettes, which suits anyone staying long enough to stop pretending they'll eat every meal out.

  40. Twelve rooms, each named for an LGBTQ+ hero, with portraits and color-saturated walls that make the minimalist furniture feel like a straight man at a drag show. This boutique hotel sits squarely in the Castro, close enough to the bars and restaurants that you'll need the private terrace to decompress between rounds. Condé Nast Traveler put it on their San Francisco hotel list, which tracks for a place this specific about its own personality.

  48. Rank 10797. Gelato Cimmino

    Italian Ice Cream Shop

A gelato shop in Old Town Scottsdale where the owner brought recipes from his hometown in southern Italy and hasn't wavered since. The flavors run classic, almond with orange, hazelnut, milk cream, plus dairy-free fruit options, and the affogato is the move if espresso is involved in your afternoon. The crowd is half tourists already pretending they're somewhere else, and the gelato gives them a reasonable case.

  49. Rank 10798. American Cut

    Modern American Steakhouse

Moody leather and brass in a Tribeca townhouse set the stage for a modern steakhouse that takes its theatrics seriously. USDA Prime and Japanese Wagyu go through a high-heat grill after dry-aging, and the kitchen consistently delivers on both. The room has a genuine late-night-Manhattan pull to it. Service can be uneven given the price point, but the cooking tends to carry the evening. It ranked 67th on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
