  1. Rank 14514. The Stables

    Seasonal Southern

    The awards

  2. A vaulted stone bridge leads to this steakhouse on the edge of Clove Lakes Park, where the terrace sits close enough to the water to feel like a small, private Central Park. Steaks, chops, and prime seafood pull the birthday-and-anniversary crowd, which is to say the room is perpetually celebratory. The menu is classic steakhouse, nothing that will surprise you, which is precisely the point on a night like that.

  3. On the 71st floor of a round Peachtree tower, this steakhouse rotates slowly enough that you won't notice until Stone Mountain has quietly switched sides. The menu is tight: steaks, chops, braised short ribs, roasted chicken, and a minimum spend per adult that keeps things honest. Business casual, reservations required. The bar two floors up lets you trade a full dinner for a cocktail and a small plate with the same view and fewer expectations.

  13. The harbor view from the second floor runs from Coronado to Point Loma, which means you're picking at your salmon while watching container ships drift past. This is an upscale seafood restaurant where the fish comes straight off local boats and the room dresses to match. Steaks and roasted chicken hold down the menu for anyone who wandered in under protest. Save room for the citrus olive oil cake.

  16. Rank 14514. Trader Vic's

    Hawaiian Cocktail Bar

The elevator opens and wood smoke hits you before the tiki art does, drifting up from the massive open-flame grills below. This Polynesian lounge has been tucked under the Hilton Downtown forever, all bamboo and novelty glassware and rum drinks served in bowls the size of a small birdbath. Staff in Hawaiian shirts keep things unhurried. Order widely and let the table become the buffet it was always meant to be.

  24. Perched above Columbus Circle with Central Park out the window, Twin Tails is a large, intentionally theatrical Asian restaurant where Thai and Vietnamese small plates arrive alongside strong cocktails and a room designed for groups who came to make noise. The vibe sits somewhere between genuinely grand and knowingly camp, which is a harder trick to pull off than it sounds. Dress up a little; this is a party-hat kind of place.

  25. Rank 14514. Txula Steak at Mercado Little Spain

    Basque Spanish Barbecue

A whole leg of jamón ibérico mounted on a carving stand anchors the room, which tells you most of what you need to know. This is Jose Andres's live-fire steak counter inside Mercado Little Spain at Hudson Yards, built around a wood-burning Basque-style grill. The steaks are the point, though the carnivorous atmosphere is half the meal. Somehow it also manages to be family-friendly without feeling like a concession, which in Manhattan is its own quiet trick.

  37. The oak grill has been running at Walt's Wharf since before Seal Beach had a Yelp page, and the menu reads like someone actually cares where the fish came from. This is a sit-down seafood restaurant with a serious California sensibility: local catch, local vegetables, and wines from the founding family's own vineyard poured alongside. The room draws regulars who come for the grilled trout and stay for the oysters, and nobody's in a hurry to leave.

  40. Water Grill is an upscale seafood restaurant in the Gaslamp, where live tanks of lobster and crab sit in the dining room like a very polite audition. The leather booths and nautical wood paneling suggest a nice dinner, not a casual one. The oyster list pulls from across the country and into Mexico, and whole fish come charcoal-grilled or oven-roasted. It holds AAA's Three Diamonds, so a collared shirt wouldn't hurt.

  53. Rank 14514. Yanni's Bar & Grill

    Mediterranean

A neighborhood Mediterranean grill in Scripps Ranch where the wine list runs from rare cellar vintages to a house label the owner bottles himself in Fallbrook. The menu moves through steaks, lamb, fresh seafood, and chicken, and the service team treats tables like a dinner party they threw. The kind of place where regulars have a standing order and out-of-towners wonder how they've never heard of it.

  55. Rank 14514. Zinnia

    Seasonal American

Garden vegetables grown on the property turn up in dishes that change with the seasons at this full-service American restaurant in Silver Spring. The building has been around forever, and the vaulted ceilings and outdoor garden, complete with private nooks, give the space a slightly romantic, old-estate feel that the cocktail list works hard to keep casual. House-made desserts close things out.

  57. Maynard James Keenan, the Tool frontman, makes wine in Arizona, and Merkin Vineyards is where you can eat alongside it. The trattoria pairs Italian-leaning dishes with the estate's bottles, including the Chupacabra red blend, a grenache-mourvèdre-syrah that shifts slightly vintage to vintage, like its shapeshifting namesake. The 2023 took Phoenix New Times' top Arizona red. It's the kind of place that makes the whole "rock star winemaker" premise feel less gimmicky than it sounds.

  59. A wristband taps to your credit card at check-in so you never fish out your wallet again, which is either clever hospitality or a mild threat depending on your willpower. Number Thirty Eight is a vast indoor-outdoor beer hall where stalls run by Colorado breweries, cideries, wineries, and distilleries line the walls, the patio is dog-friendly, and Split Lip handles the burgers. Westword named it the city's best free entertainment.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
