  1. Rank 494. Witwenball

    Contemporary Bistro

The white marble counter running through the middle of the room is the first thing you clock at this lively bistro in Hamburg's Schanzenviertel. A former dance hall, it still carries a little of that energy, with wine racks stacked to the ceiling and a terrace for warmer nights. The menu is contemporary and builds around regional and seasonal ingredients, with a build-your-own four-course option and a wine list running past 500 bottles.

    The awards

  2. The restaurant inside spa hotel Weißes Roß sits right beside the village church, which sets the scene nicely. Inside, warm colors and modern design make it feel considered without feeling stiff. The kitchen runs an all-vegan menu built around seasonal ingredients, offered as a four-course set with an optional surprise course, or à la carte. Wine pairings and alcohol-free alternatives are both on the table, so nobody is left improvising.

    The awards

  3. The name does the work here: "root" and "craft" in German, and the kitchen takes both seriously. Set in a pair of old farmstead buildings in the Rhineland-Palatinate countryside, this is a farm-to-table restaurant where the ingredients are almost entirely regional and the cooking stays pleasingly unfussy. The garden terrace fills up in summer, and the rustic interior handles the colder months with ease.

  5. Rank 494. XO Seafoodbar

    Modern Seafood

The "Pasta Krabbe" has its own reputation in St. Pauli, which tells you something about a seafood restaurant that could easily coast on oysters and grilled prawns alone. This is a two-floor spot with an open kitchen counter upstairs and a terrace that fills up fast in summer. The menu runs modern and seasonal, and if decision fatigue hits, the kitchen will just pick for you. The small bar does cocktails, the room stays lively, and the whole thing feels like a neighborhood place that forgot to be quiet about it.

  6. Rank 494. Yabase

    Japanese

Düsseldorf has a proper Japanese quarter, and Yabase sits at the heart of it, a sushi and sashimi restaurant behind a plain facade that opens into a calm, minimalist room. The counter seats you in front of the fish case with the chefs working a few feet away. Lunch means queuing before the door opens; evenings require a booking. Warm sake or Japanese beer, and if you're feeling adventurous, the barbecued tuna head is not a dish that plays it safe.

  7. Rank 494. YOSO Asian Comfort Food

    Japanese Noodle Shop

Ramen, sushi, bao, and yakitori share the menu at this casual Asian comfort food spot tucked into the historic centre of Andernach. The chef behind the more formal PURS runs this one too, which says something about range. The room has a clean, urban feel with just enough Far Eastern detail to feel considered rather than generic. Everything is designed for sharing, and it's all available for takeaway if you'd rather eat it somewhere else entirely.

    The awards

  8. Dinner at this mezze bar starts with a communal platter of vegetarian small plates before you choose a main, a format that makes sharing feel built-in rather than optional. It sits beneath the same roof as Julia Komp's fine-dining restaurant Sahila, but the mood here is looser, the cooking Levant-leaning: kohlrabi dolma, preserved lemon, couscous. Warm tones, a courtyard terrace in summer, and a well-stocked international wine list.

    The awards

  9. The name means "magic mountain," which sets expectations the kitchen seems comfortable meeting. This is a small creative dining room in Munich where the chef sends out a five-to-six course surprise menu, so you surrender the wheel at the door. The room has an elegant but unfussy feel, and the terrace fills up fast on warm evenings. Request vegetarian when you book or you'll find out too late that spontaneity has its limits.

  11. Rank 494. zeit|geist

    Modern French

The half-timbered Walk'sche Haus in the center of Weingarten has been catching eyes for centuries, and the interior matches it with a considered mix of sleek modern lines and old-building warmth. This is a contemporary French restaurant where the kitchen builds modern plates on classical foundations, with a menu available à la carte or as a four, six, or eight course surprise. In summer, the terrace over the Walzbach stream fills fast, and for good reason.

    The awards

  12. The sake list runs from everyday to serious, which tells you something about the room. This is a full-service Japanese restaurant tucked into a residential Cologne neighborhood, doing the whole spread: gyoza, tempura, udon, sushi, sashimi, and a large omakase menu for those who want to hand over the wheel. The setting is spare and calm, the service has a noticeably Japanese cadence to it, and locals who know it tend to come back often.

    The awards

  13. Rank 494. Zenzakan

    Pan-Asian

Terracotta warriors stand guard over a pan-Asian restaurant tucked behind a courtyard in Frankfurt's banking district, which is either a flex or a statement about the neighborhood. The dark, low-lit interior leans into a Far East mood, the music keeps things from getting too reverent, and the menu spans sushi, curries, and robata grill in a way that suits a long table of people who can't agree on a plan.

    The awards

  14. Rank 494. Zipang

    Japanese

The name translates to "kingdom of the rising sun," and the room, all modern minimalist lines, takes that seriously without being theatrical about it. This is a Japanese restaurant that shifts registers across the day: a more casual, affordable lunch crowd gives way each evening to a six- or eight-course tasting menu where the kitchen applies meticulous technique to quality ingredients. The sake list is deep enough to keep you busy deciding.

    The awards

  15. Rank 494. Zirbelstube

    Regional German

A sandstone building on the edge of Nuremberg houses this warm, family-run restaurant with a vaulted dining room and a terrace that earns its own following. The kitchen works through two set menus built around Franconian classics and seasonal produce, with enough mix-and-match freedom that you're not just along for the ride. The kind of unhurried country cooking that makes the drive out feel like the whole point of the evening.

  19. The half-timbered bones of this old inn in Bad Cannstatt go back centuries, and the interior leans into that with aged wood and a genuinely cosy, old-world feel. Chef Can Basar runs a seasonal and international menu alongside old-school classics, with the roast beef drawing regulars back. You can order à la carte or commit to a four- or five-course set menu, which is probably the move in a room this unhurried.

  23. An old-school Bavarian inn that's been around forever, Zum Goldenen Pflug leans into regional tradition without turning itself into a museum. The dining rooms are charming in that properly worn-in way, and the menu runs to things like boiled beef from a copper pot with chive sauce and creamed spinach, or shredded pancake with plum compote for dessert. There's à la carte, or a signature menu for two or more.

    The awards

  24. Rank 494. Zum Hirsch

    Regional Mediterranean

A half-timbered inn that's been around forever, Zum Hirsch is the kind of country restaurant where the fireplace is genuinely the point in winter and the terrace earns its keep in summer. The team cooks regional German fare with a Mediterranean lean, offering set menus in the evening and a relaxed lunch menu through the week. Friday and Saturday dinner runs on set menus only, so arrive with an appetite and no agenda.

    The awards

  25. The awards

  26. Rank 494. Zum Krug

    Seasonal German

The courtyard terrace alone explains why this Rheingau restaurant fills up on warm evenings. Inside, the dining rooms carry the kind of worn-in charm that comes from a building that's been around forever, now in its third generation of the same family. The menu follows the seasons closely, with regional dishes alongside broader European cooking, and the staff will steer you toward estate wines from the surrounding Rheingau without any fuss.

    The awards

  27. Rank 494. Zum Ochsen

    Swabian

The restaurant runs its own butcher's shop on the premises, which tells you everything about where the kitchen's priorities lie. It's a traditional Swabian dining room in a wine village outside Stuttgart, serving seasonal food that leans on regional meat and produce while quietly absorbing influences from further afield. Regulars who never need the menu fill the room most nights, which at a place that's been around forever is either reassuring or slightly intimidating, depending on your German.

  30. Rank 494. Zum Rössl

    Regional Austrian

The old coaching inn bones are still visible in the dining room, all dark wood and traditional trimmings, and the menu reads like someone's grandmother made peace with the Mediterranean. This family-run restaurant in Neckargemünd leans on regional classics, boiled brisket with horseradish, hearty lunch plates, and the occasional bouillabaisse appearing without apology. When the weather cooperates, the terrace is the obvious move.

    The awards

  31. Solid wooden tables, no tablecloths, walls full of pictures: this is a pub that knows exactly what it is, and doesn't lose sleep about it. Attached to the Bitburger Brewery in the market square, it runs from honest daily specials at lunch to tidier plates in the evening. The team is charming, the atmosphere genuinely lively, and if the night gets away from you, there are guestrooms upstairs.

    The awards

  32. Rank 494. Zum Storchen

    Seasonal German

    The awards

  33. Pale wood, exposed concrete, and clean lines set the tone at this modern seasonal restaurant in a small Bavarian town. The kitchen follows the farms and the calendar closely, and the menu runs across three set courses, one of them vegetarian, with everything also available à la carte. The terrace catches warm evenings well. A Michelin Selected Restaurant, quietly doing its thing far from any obvious food destination.

    The awards

  34. A Gasthaus on the market square of a small Franconian wine town, with a terrace made for lingering over a glass. Inside, the room feels warm and unhurried, the kind of place where the front of house knows your name by the second visit. The kitchen leans into bold, composed flavors, and the wine list draws heavily from a local estate. Solid German cooking with more ambition than the postcard setting might suggest.

    The awards

  35. Rank 494. Zur Krone

    German

A country restaurant in a traditional building that has been feeding this corner of Baden-Württemberg for longer than anyone can comfortably remember. The menu follows the seasons and leans hard on regional ingredients, the wine list likewise. Homemade terrines and desserts are the things people mention when they get home. Guestrooms upstairs mean you can skip the drive back entirely, which the wine list quietly encourages.

  37. Rank 494. Zur Linde

    Swabian

The vaulted cellar and leafy rear terrace give away that this place has been around forever, a proper old coaching inn turned Swabian restaurant in the southern suburbs of Stuttgart. The menu runs the classics, Maultaschen, Gaisburger Marsch, beef with onions in gravy, alongside seasonal plates that skew a little lighter. On the way out, the shop sells house-made soups and spaetzle to take home, which tells you something about how people feel about the cooking.

  38. The awards

  39. Rank 494. Zur Schlupp

    Seasonal German

A half-timbered house that has been standing since before anyone reading this was born sets the scene for this cosy seasonal restaurant in Walluf. The monthly menus, one of them vegetarian, follow what's fresh rather than what's fashionable, and the Rheingau Riesling selection makes the wine conversation easy. The courtyard draws a devoted summer crowd. Book ahead, because the room is small and the regulars know it.

    The awards

  40. Rank 494. Zur Sonne

    German

The on-site shop stocked with organic vegetables, honey, and local wine is a clue to how seriously this cheerful country restaurant takes its sourcing. Lunch runs à la carte; evenings step up with set menus built around Black Forest ingredients from named nearby farms. Goat from Ernst's farm, kid cooked in its own jus, house-made spaetzle, salt-crusted red cabbage. Cosy guestrooms upstairs for anyone who overdoes the regional wine list.

  42. Rank 494. Zur Waage M.E.B.

    Regional German

A terrace over the Leda River, a view of the museum harbour, and shrimp soup on the menu: this is a traditional regional restaurant that has been doing its thing in the centre of Leer for long enough that the chef trained here as an apprentice before eventually running the place. The room leans into old inn character with maritime accents, and the kitchen keeps close to North Sea and seasonal produce. Lunch runs a little simpler than dinner.

    The awards

  43. Rank 494. ZweiSinn Meiers | Bistro

    Modern Mediterranean

A casual bistro sharing a building with its fine dining sibling, which means Wednesday and Thursday evenings bring a three-course menu drawn from the kitchen next door, sparkling wine folded in. The rest of the week runs modern, Mediterranean-leaning à la carte, a caviar menu for the ambitious, and a lunchtime daily special that goes fast. The wine-by-the-glass list is taken seriously, and the alcohol-free alternatives are not an afterthought.

    The awards

  44. Rank 494. Zwo20

    Modern Pan-Asian

Dinner inside a vaulted chapel, ceiling paintings overhead, small plates arriving to share. Zwo20 is a casual modern restaurant in Passau's old town where the kitchen runs Asian sharing cuisine through a European lens, so expect clever little dishes built around things like sous vide pork with soya and honey. The room's historic bones sit in cheerful contrast to the relaxed, buzzy crowd. It's a five-minute walk from the three-river confluence, if you're doing the tourist math.

  45. Rank 1245. Bottega Ceccarelli

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

A Neapolitan pizza oven hauled up from Naples anchors this small Braunschweig spot, which started life as an Italian deli selling cured meats and wine before pivoting into a proper pizzeria. The crust runs a little taller than classic Neapolitan, the dough gets a long natural fermentation, and the wine list leans into Lambrusco and Trentino. No reservations, so on warm evenings the aperitivo crowd spills outside. It landed on 50 Top Pizza Europe.

  46. Rank 1245. Calvello’s

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

Neapolitan pizza in Munich, done without fuss or flourish. Calvello's keeps its focus on dough and recognizable flavors from the southern Italian tradition, the kind of soft, light crust that collapses gently rather than fighting back. The room is unfussy, the service easy-going enough to handle off-menu requests without breaking a sweat. It ranks among 50 Top Pizza Europe, which in a city not exactly known for Neapolitan pie is saying something.

  47. Rank 1245. NAPIZZA

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

A Neapolitan pizza shop in Nuremberg that takes its southern Italian reference point seriously, with a menu that runs from straightforward classics to more inventive combinations. The dough is the thing here: well-proofed, balanced, holding its toppings without going slack. Buffalo mozzarella and proper tomatoes do the talking. 50 Top Pizza placed it among Europe's top pizzerias, which brings in the faithful from well beyond the neighborhood.

  48. Rank 1248. Gemello

    Vegan Pizzeria

The "mozzarella" here is made from tapioca starch and coconut oil, which tells you everything about Gemello's approach. It's a vegan pizza shop in Prenzlauer Berg where the chef, a trained chemical engineer, makes every substitute from scratch: almond ricotta, miso-tofu feta, eggplant anchovy. The crust runs thin with a wide, airy edge and toppings that hold their shape. Carnivores reportedly stop asking questions after the first slice. Book ahead.

  49. Rank 1248. Henrietta

    Pizzeria

A small pizzeria in central Bamberg that earns its reputation on restraint: the dough is light, properly worked, and lets simple toppings do their job without any theater. The room feels easygoing rather than designed, the staff are warm without hovering, and the kitchen will improvise when you ask nicely. Come here when you want a good pizza and a genuinely unhurried table, not a story to tell about it.

The menu splits pizzas into red and white, with stuffed options that earn their place alongside pasta and tiramisu. The room is put-together, the welcome is warm, and the whole operation takes its dough seriously enough to land on 50 Top Pizza Europe.

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

The founder traded a television career in Naples for a wood-fired oven in Friedenau, and the room feels like the trade worked out. This Neapolitan pizzeria has been around for a while now, and the dough still gets a long, slow rise before hitting the oven fast, producing a wide-crusted pie that leans hard into San Marzano tomatoes and Campanian fior di latte. It holds a spot on 50 Top Pizza Europe's Excellent Pizzerias list.

  52. Rank 1248. Mamida

    Sourdough Pizzeria

The sourdough here is the work of a trained baker who minds his fermentations closely, and you can taste it in a crust that stays soft without going slack. Mamida is a casual pizza spot in Prenzlauer Berg where the toppings lean into odd, good combinations: fruit with cold cuts, seeds with cheese, sweet against heat. Natural wines and local craft beers round things out. The room is basic, unfussy, and loud in the way that suggests nobody came here to be impressed.

  53. Rank 1248. Mr. Pizza

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

A Neapolitan pizza spot in a Dortmund suburb that doesn't seem to know it's supposed to make concessions for the latitude. The dough is well-hydrated and light, with a soft, airy crust that comes from careful leavening rather than luck. The menu stays deliberately short, a few appetizers and pasta dishes orbiting the pizza, which is the whole point. Listed among 50 Top Pizza Europe's Excellent Pizzerias.

  54. Rank 1248. Papi

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

A Neapolitan pizza spot in Mannheim's Jungbusch neighborhood, Papi leans into the tradition with a Neapolitan pizzaiolo running the oven and a dough that stays light and easy. The outdoor terrace is the real draw on a good day, well-kept and unhurried in a way that actually earns the Naples comparison. It's a casual, relaxed stop, the kind where the pizza does the talking and nobody's in a hurry to rush you out.

  55. Rank 1248. Partenope 081

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

The name nods to the siren of Greek myth said to have wept the Gulf of Naples into existence, and the 081 is Naples' own area code, so the allegiance is spelled out before you even sit down. This Friedrichshain pizzeria makes straightforward Neapolitan pies, no experiments, with a wide disc, a proper puffy crust from a long ferment, and toppings sourced directly from Campania. Order it folded to eat standing, the way Naples does.

The room runs in Mediterranean colors, the service is warm, and regulars know to book ahead. Alongside the classic wood-fired rounds, fried pizza with a ricotta-filled crust makes a strong case for ordering more than you planned. Named among 50 Top Pizza Europe's Excellent Pizzerias.

The dough is the thing to notice: well-developed, light enough to stay out of its own way, and cooked with enough care to hold structure without turning into a cracker. The sausage hits that rare crispy-yet-juicy balance, and the ketchup-to-curry ratio is handled with more seriousness than most things in this city. The sourdough pizzas with 'nduja or mushroom cream are reason enough to find this side-street dining room in Prenzlauer Berg, but the chef's menu resists that label and most others. Call it a creative bistro, where pork shoulder with local vegetables sits near a milcheis sundae that quietly argues for German-American fusion as a legitimate lifestyle choice. 67. One of Berlin's very few Yemeni restaurants sits on Karl-Marx-Straße, where the neighborhood defaults to Turkish and Syrian. The cooking pulls from the Arabian Peninsula, India, and the Horn of Africa at once, which sounds like a thesis statement but lands as a bowl of saucy lamb stew with flaky malawah to soak it up. The zurbian, slow-cooked meat over rice with yogurt, is the one to order when you're not sure where to start.

  68. A counter service spot in Prenzlauer Berg turning out Argentine empanadas, from the classic beefy Creole filling the name nods to, through spicy chicken and a ricotta-spinach version that landed via Italy. The shells are soft, wheaty, and smooth, which is either exactly what you want or a useful education in what Argentine empanadas actually are, depending on where you're coming from.

  69. The name signals the menu: larb, the punchy Lao-Thai salad, is the kind of dish most Berlin kitchens don't bother with. This small Thai restaurant in Friedrichshain skips the pad thai and goes regional instead, pulling from Southern curries and other corners of Thailand that rarely show up here. The chef isn't shy with spice, which is its own act of bravery in this city. A tight room, a tight menu, and food that doesn't soften itself for the neighborhood.

Lahmacun comes out fresh to order, topped with ground meat, herbs, and onion, and costs well under two euros apiece, which invites a certain reckless quantity. The chargrilled kebabs in fresh bread with a punishingly tangy garlic sauce pull equal weight. Expect a wait out front; the place is small and not a secret.

  74. Rank 1258. Rüyam Gemüse Kebab

    Turkish Kebab Shop

The flatbread here is that specific combination of crispy outside and pillowy inside that makes a döner kebab feel like a structural achievement. This counter-serve spot in Schöneberg does chicken döner: tender, well-marinated meat, grilled vegetables, fresh herbs, a hit of lemon, and your choice of garlic or sesame sauce. Locals who know to avoid the tourist queue around the corner fill this place instead, which tells you most of what you need to know.

  77. Rank 1258. Thaipark

    Isan Food Truck

Dozens of Thai vendors set up under bright umbrellas in a Wilmersdorf park on weekends, April through October, weather permitting. It's an outdoor street market tradition that's been around for decades, drawing people from across the city for homemade noodle soups, curries, and Isan-regional dishes cooked out of home kitchens. A recent relocation shifted things to Württembergische Strasse, just alongside the park, but the format stays the same: bring cash, find a patch of grass, eat well.

  78. Rank 1258. Wen Cheng Handpulled Noodles

    Shaanxi Noodle Shop

Hand-pulled biang biang noodles in the Shaanxi style, wide as a belt and springy enough to make you think twice about every bowl of pasta you've ever eaten. This is a casual noodle shop, so expect a line, a short menu, and a very low bill. The vegan options hold their own alongside the beef. Berlin opened a third location partly so the city could stop queuing quite so dramatically for the first two.

  79. Rank 1258. Zur letzten Instanz

    Berlin German

The building has been serving food and drink since the 1600s, which makes the laminated tourist menus feel almost beside the point. Zur letzten Instanz is a classic Berlin tavern in Mitte, all low ceilings and a courtyard garden, with a menu built around pork in its most serious forms. The eisbein, a slow-cooked knuckle, is the thing to order. Charlie Chaplin apparently ate here, which the staff have not forgotten.

  80. Rank 1287. Grill Royal

    Steakhouse

On the banks of the Spree, this Berlin steakhouse has been the city's most reliably glamorous social theatre for as long as anyone can remember. Dry-aged cuts from Germany, the US, and Japanese and Australian Wagyu go under a high-temperature broiler, and the room, all modern art and soft lighting, fills with politicians, artists, and regulars who all pretend not to notice each other. Ranked among the world's top steak restaurants, it earns that company.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
