  5. Rank 193. Maria's Cafe

    Colombian Café

Corn pancakes, crispy-edged and dusted with cotija, are the reason the line forms early at this Seward neighborhood breakfast cafe. Colombian dishes like arepas and paisa bowls share the menu with a full parade of pancakes, so the table next to you might be having a very different morning. It's a casual, cash-register-and-coffee-mug kind of spot, warm in the way that neighborhood regulars make a place warm.

  7. Rank 193. Pierrot Gourmet

    French Café

Pierrot Gourmet is a French bakery-cafe attached to the Peninsula Hotel, which means it's the one place in that building where nobody asks you to dress up. Grab a seat among the brunching tourists if you like, but the to-go line is where the flaky chocolate croissants, hefty cinnamon rolls, and tarts shaped like chrysanthemums are moving. The Infatuation includes it on its Chicago bakeries list.

  12. Rank 193. The Nitro Bar

    Nitro Café

The Nitro Bar is a casual coffee shop on Broadway, and the nitro cold brew has convinced local firefighters to skip Dunkin', which in New England is practically a defection. Monthly specials run toward things like caramelized banana, and there's a breakfast sandwich with avocado and poblano aioli. The indoor space is small and shared with a bike shop, so take your drink outside if the weather cooperates.

  13. The all-day cafe sits beneath the historic Eldorado Ballroom in Houston's Third Ward, which tells you something before you've even ordered. Breakfast tacos, sandwiches, and farm-fresh salads fill the menu, and the indoor market stocks condiments, desserts, and wine curated by neighborhood residents. Emancipation Park is right across the street if you'd rather eat outside, and the Hogan Brown Art Gallery is next door if you'd rather linger.

    Newstand-Inspired Coffee

  15. Rank 193. VIGO Coffee

    Mexican Coffee Shop

  16. Rank 193. Wild Root Café

    Vegetarian Café

  17. A tea shop on Speedway with a drive-thru and a menu that branches into something like 4,500 combinations if you're counting. The drinks lean creative and a little tropical, built around named blends like the Rainforest or the Bayou, pineapple and dark cherry meeting lime, white peach cutting through raspberry. You can get your tea as a soda, latte, chai, or snow, which covers most moods and most temperatures Tucson throws at you.

  18. A matcha truck parked near UT that grew out of its co-founder's cancer recovery, which is about as meaningful an origin story as a café can have. Ceremonial-grade matcha is the baseline, with rotating flavors like pistachio and rose moving through quickly among students and regulars. In a city where food trucks are practically a civic institution, this one keeps the vibe calm and the drinks deeply, conspicuously green.

  19. A cafe and bar where the grounds do half the work: twenty tree species, a working garden, and a stream running through a South Austin property that makes it surprisingly easy to justify a third coffee. The team behind Veracruz All Natural and DEE DEE partnered up here, so the food skews Mexican and Thai alongside the cafe menu. Come for the laptop-friendly shade, stay because it turns into a bar once the afternoon earns it.

  20. Mole negro shows up on nearly everything here, the rich, dark kind that takes days to make and coats burritos and chilaquiles alike. Alebrijes is a casual Oaxacan cafe in Litchfield Park with indoor tables, bar seats, and a shaded patio, the sort of place where the specials board does the real work. Concha French toast and coffee cocktails share menu space with pozole. Expect a wait, which the regulars seem entirely unbothered by.

  21. A vegetarian Reuben built around roasted beets and smoked Thousand Island tells you where this Washington Park deli's loyalties lie, though the kitchen is happy to add bacon when asked. Part neighborhood grocery, part cafe, it runs breakfast, lunch, and weekend brunch, with a coffee bar that also does beet and turmeric lattes for anyone who wants their caffeine to feel like a wellness decision.

  24. Rank 225. Cafe Isabella

    Mexican Café

Cafe Isabella is a counter-service Mexican cafe on Taylor Street where the griddled breakfast burrito does most of the talking. Carnitas, eggs, and cheese come tightly wrapped, and adding avocado and sour cream is the polite way to make it heavier. A few sidewalk tables exist for the impatient, though the thing travels fine, which suits the Nob Hill locals who climb down from their Victorians still recovering from the night before.

  25. Choice Juicery is a laidback organic juice and salad cafe in Carlsbad Village, with sibling locations around San Diego County. Salads sit ready in the case at around $13, with a gluten-free wrap upgrade for a few dollars more, and online ordering means you can skip the line entirely. The menu is plant-based, so the taco "meat" is walnuts and the cobb gets coconut "bacon." Eater put it on a list of the best salads in San Diego.

  26. Rank 225. Chroma

    Café

Chroma is an all-day cafe on the Menil campus, which means your lunch comes with a lawn and a general atmosphere of having your life together. The menu wanders from a picnic plate of salads and hummus to a double-patty burger and a coconut lemongrass snapper, so a table of four can disagree without anyone sulking. The patio looks out over the grounds, and a weekday midday seat there tends to feel like cutting out of work early.

  27. Rank 225. Desilicious Cafe

    Indian Café

Desilicious is a casual South Indian cafe on Parmer Lane where the menu runs past 80 kinds of dosa, chapathi, and parotta, plus breakfast staples like idly and pongal. The room does not compete: metal pitchers of water wait on every table, the air conditioning is more of a suggestion, and the TV plays Indian pop videos through tinny speakers. Order the chai, then keep coming back until you've worked through the list.

  28. Rank 225. Koffeteria

    Southeast Asian Café

Koffeteria is a counter-service bakery and coffee shop on Brittmoore where a kolache can taste like beef pho and the cornbread comes with Cambodian elote ideas. The pastry case wanders freely between Mexico, Brazil, France, and Italy, and nobody there seems worried about passports. The iced coffee arrives salty and sweet, with condensed milk and sourdough butter, which is to say it's a snack with a straw.

  29. Rank 225. Lotus Cafe & Juice Bar

    Vegetarian Café

Lotus is a casual, order-at-the-counter cafe and juice bar on Encinitas' main drag, where the menu runs mostly vegetarian and the salad list reaches ten. Names like Soulful and Spiritual tell you exactly what town you're in. You can add tofu, tempeh, or vegetable "chicken," or blackened chicken if the vegetables have been judging you. Eater has named it among San Diego's best salads.

  33. A pint-sized Venezuelan cafe on Melrose that grew out of a popular dinner party pop-up, Chainsaw serves arepas, coffee drinks, and pie from a counter you can count the seats at. The menu shifts often, but the passionfruit-lime icebox pie with its bracingly tart filling keeps showing up for good reason. Sidewalk seating, daytime hours, and a chef who might pivot to a fried snapper plate or a potato-stick-topped hot dog any given week.

  34. A cafe and market the size of a generous toolshed on Coconut Grove's pedestrian strip, where a communal table out front has turned a 30-minute wait for a yuzu tuna sandwich and a cappuccino into a sunny Saturday ritual. The kitchen is small but restless, turning out whatever's seasonal alongside specialty pantry finds that will quietly devastate your budget. The crowd skews young and takes their sandwich symmetry seriously.

  35. Rank 242. Letssweet Kitchen

    Cantonese Café

  36. Rank 242. Maci Cafe

    Italian Café

  37. Rank 242. Mokja

    Korean Café

A build-your-own instant ramen bar does a lot of the talking at this Korean cafe and market tucked behind a Highland Park pocha. The team behind Be Bright Coffee runs the drinks side, with the 2024 U.S. Barista Champion pulling banana matcha lattes alongside grab-and-go banchan, Spam musubi, and a braised oxtail hand pie. It's the kind of neighborhood spot that makes a convincing case for ramen at any hour.

  38. Rank 242. Ojo de Agua

  41. Rank 252. TingTing’s

    Cantonese Café

A Hong Kong-style all-day cafe where five-spice wings, barbecued unagi over scrambled eggs, Portuguese custard tarts, and clam chowder share a menu without anyone blinking. TingTing's, from the team behind EMei, is small, crowded, and BYO, which covers the essentials. The menu sprawls in the way those old Hong Kong cafes do, where Western comfort food and Cantonese staples occupy the same laminated page and somehow coexist peacefully.

    The awards

  42. A three-tiered cake stand of sandwiches, scones, and petits fours, served on antique bone china, is the move at this afternoon tea room tucked into the small desert town of Carefree. Thirty-plus loose-leaf varieties anchor the menu, and the kitchen also runs a proper lunch of jacket potatoes, smoked salmon quiche, and tea sandwiches. There's even a scaled-down Nursery Tea for children who have outgrown imaginary cups but not PB&J.

  43. A passage hidden behind a wardrobe connects the two sides of this Ft. Thomas bookstore and café, which is either charming or a mild fire-code concern, depending on your disposition. The shelves lean heavily into fiction, especially romantasy, fantasy, mystery, and horror. There's a coffee counter on one side and a small bourbon bar on the other, which covers the full spectrum of how a reading session can go.

  44. A matcha café that sources its tea directly from a family farm in Shizuoka, which means the starting point is better than most. Little Matcha landed in Covington after starting as a pop-up, and the menu rotates every two weeks so the seasonal lattes, strawberry one week, ube the next, stay worth revisiting. Hojicha and genmaicha lattes fill out the board, but the matcha is clearly the main event here.

  45. The Cafe at Thistle Farms is a daytime counter-service cafe on Charlotte Pike, run by a nonprofit that employs women survivors of trafficking, addiction, and prostitution, so the sandwich arrives with a mission statement attached. A teacup chandelier hangs overhead, and the menu leans toward BLTs, breakfast bowls, and a case of cakes. Nashville Scene named it Best Cafe in its 2023 Best of Nashville, if that helps you decide on lunch.

  46. The Yorkshire Deli is a British tea room in Kingston Springs, about half an hour from downtown Nashville, and it commits to the woodland-fairy bit with seasonal blooms everywhere you look. You email ahead to book one of four tea experiences, which come with scones, clotted cream, and finger sandwiches. There's a Mad Hatter tea party for kids, dress-up props included, and Nashville Scene named it a Best Worth-the-Drive Treat.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
