The Best Places to Eat and Stay in the United States

Eat + Stay, change section
  1. WG Pizzas is a Lakeview tavern-style pizzeria, a spin-off of an old suburban Highwood joint that has been feeding Lake County for ages. The crust is cut thin but keeps a few proud bubbles at the edges, so it lands chewier than the cracker-crisp stuff, closer to what South Side spots turn out. Order online, grab a BLT pie, and mind the monthly chef takeovers, which are a good excuse to pretend you planned ahead.

  2. Wild Barbecue is a counter-service Texas smokehouse near ASU, run by two Jordanian brothers who picked up the craft in Dallas and then slipped their own history onto the tray. Beef ribs and brisket are there if you want to stay in your lane. The tandoori turkey, lamb chops, and Mediterranean rice suggest you shouldn't. It started as a food truck, and the Phoenix New Times put it on its list of the Valley's top smokehouses.

  3. Rank 11246. Wilder's

    Steakhouse

  4. The servers here will happily explain the difference between cashew and almond-based cheeses without making you feel like you asked something embarrassing, which tells you a lot about how this plant-based Californian restaurant operates. The menu leans into umami to do the heavy lifting, and the mushroom-and-spinach burger with chipotle aioli is a reasonable gateway for the vegan-curious. A Stanford-area outpost of the Cow Hollow original.

  5. Rank 11246. Will's Chophouse

    Steakhouse

  6. This is a deep-dish pizza joint with a sports bar's worth of televisions, built around a founder who developed her own dough, sauce, and sausage blend while raising seven kids. It spent decades as an Englewood fixture before landing in the South Loop. Eater has named it among Chicago's deep-dish picks. There are no reservations, so on game days the move is to show up early and claim a stool like it's a playoff seed.

  8. This is a burger operation that started as a weekend pop-up and now works out of a convenience store in Logan Square, which is about as Chicago a career arc as you can draw. Weekdays you order at the market, and on weekends the club follows its own social media posts to breweries and farmers markets. The smash burgers get playful, including a version that swaps the bun for a doughnut, so bring a casual appetite and zero fear of sugar.

  9. Rank 11246. Winsome Prime

    Southern Steakhouse

  10. A sprawling lawn outside Springfield where dogs, kids, and adults with a pint of the house hazy IPA coexist without anyone seeming to mind. Wire Road is a craft brewery with a covered patio, rotating food trucks parked on the grass, and live music often enough that bringing a folding chair counts as planning ahead. The coffee menu means someone can always be the designated driver without suffering for it.

  11. Rank 11246. Wishing Town Bakery Cafe

    Chinese Coffee Shop

  12. Rank 11246. Woo Chon Korean BBQ Restaurant

    Charcoal Korean Barbecue

  13. Hunter S. Thompson used to drink here, and the walls still look like it. Woody Creek Tavern is a comfort food bar and restaurant about twenty minutes outside Aspen, its walls plastered with Polaroids, magazine covers, and vintage kitsch that have outlasted at least one leopard-print carpet. The menu runs burgers, wings, nachos, and enchiladas, and the spicy margarita is the house original for a reason. The drive out of town is the price of admission.

  14. Word of Mouth Grill is a counter-service barbecue joint in a Tempe strip mall, smoking its meats over mesquite and offering eight housemade sauces ranging from sweet honey to habanero, which is more sauce decisions than most people want to make while hungry. Brisket and pulled pork come by the pound, on a combo plate, or in a brioche bun, and the rib tips are the crisp, craggy move. Order the four-cheese mac and grab napkins.

  15. Rank 11246. World Famous Hotboys

    Nashville Southern

Hundreds of flags and string lights cover the ceiling, CRT TVs along the bar counter are loaded with old-school video game consoles, and a mural of Walnut Creek landmarks greets you before you even open the door. This hot chicken shop does Nashville-style fried chicken and sandwiches, with heat levels that go from polite to genuinely humbling. The outdoor picnic tables are there when you need air, or perspective.

  16. Rank 11246. Yeh's Bakery

  17. Rank 11246. Yin Du Wonton Noodle

    Cantonese Noodle Shop

A Chinatown noodle shop where the soup comes piled with roast duck, wontons, and springy yellow noodles, all for around eight dollars. The move, though, is the brisket version, where the braised beef melts into the broth and makes the whole bowl taste twice as serious. Add a side of slow-cooked beef tendon and stir it in as you go. Named among the San Francisco Chronicle's picks for Chinatown, and the line out front tends to agree.

  22. Young's is a carryout counter on 11 Mile in Royal Oak that handles the American Chinese canon: General Tso's, lo mein, beef and broccoli, wontons that crunch on schedule. It's built for a Michigan winter, when sweet, salty, and fried is a coping strategy. Red bean doughnut balls and a can of Vernor's close things out, and the couch does the rest. Eater has included it on its list of Metro Detroit's Chinese restaurants.

  24. The thin, foldable crust at this New York-style slice shop on Clark leans into toppings that have no business being this interesting, truffled mushrooms and bacon jam among them. Grandma-style pies round out the menu, and the whole operation is BYOB, which keeps things relaxed and cheap. Eater named it one of Chicago's best pizza spots. Order online before you go.

  31. A converted Sears store turned tech hub is an unlikely address for one of the more interesting restaurants in Houston, yet here we are. Chef Chris Williams blends American, Mexican, and African influences into a seasonal menu that changes without feeling restless. The produce comes from a farm the team actually runs in Fort Bend County, which explains a lot. The "surprise tasting" is the move if you're willing to let them decide.

  48. The 47-story atrium is so vertiginously tall that John Portman's neo-futuristic design has moonlighted as a movie set for decades. This downtown convention hotel connects to Peachtree Center by skybridge and runs multiple restaurants, from a coffee shop to a steakhouse. Rooms are clean and functional, with low platform beds and a proper desk. The glass elevators alone will make you feel like you're in a film, which, statistically, you sort of are.

  52. The Fox Theatre is literally across the street, which makes this Marriott Courtyard a practical choice for anyone coming to Atlanta for a show or using Peachtree Street as a home base. It's a mid-range hotel with 158 rooms, soft lighting, plush beds, and a lobby big enough to spread out in. The attached restaurant leans into Southern comfort food, chicken and waffles among them.

  60. The bones go back to 1913, but a thorough renovation means the lobby reads contemporary rather than musty. This downtown Atlanta hotel keeps rooms compact and practical, with a proper desk and a modern bath, and some king rooms add a sofa if you need the breathing room. The lobby coffee counter pulls double duty as a morning café and evening bar. Peachtree Center MARTA is a short walk south, and dozens of restaurants surround it.

  63. Three wings of rooms orbit a central elevator bank in this retro-futuristic high-rise hotel downtown, which at 28 stories and 1,249 rooms is less a hotel than a small municipality. Skybridges connect it to neighboring hotels and the conference center, so conventioneers can spend three days entirely indoors if the Atlanta summer has anything to say about it. Fourth-floor rooms open onto a terrace with a jogging track and pickleball courts.

  69. The atrium here was John Portman's original experiment in the form: a cavernous open void with a skylight ceiling and glass elevators gliding up the walls, and it still stops people mid-stride. This conference-scale hotel spreads across three towers, from standard king rooms to the Radius, a glass cylinder with compact quarters and mosaic-tile showers that feel like a set from a 1970s sci-fi film. Polaris, the revolving rooftop restaurant under a blue dome, completes the retro-futurist mood.

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
