The public house at its best: gastropubs with stars over the door, locals worth the detour, rooms where the kitchen earns as much respect as the taps. These are the pubs the inspectors and critics have honored, ranked best first.

Rank 1. The Bull
British Pub
Twin open fires and flagged floors set the tone at this old Cotswold inn turned gastropub, where the kitchen cooks over flame and changes the menu as often as the farmers call. The team behind London's The Pelican came home to Charlbury to restore it, and the terse, ingredient-led dishes feel like the point rather than the ambition. It ranks in the Top 50 Gastropubs and is in the Michelin Guide. Rooms upstairs if you miss the last train.

Rank 2. Queen of Cups
Middle Eastern Pub
A Glastonbury pub named after a tarot card, in an old coaching inn where the menu runs on Middle Eastern instinct and Somerset produce. The chef, of Jordanian heritage and French training, spent summers cooking with her grandmother in Jordan before stints at The Palomar and a Michelin-starred spot in Anglesey shaped her into someone who can make a shish barak feel completely at home in the West Country. The Michelin Guide awards it a Bib Gourmand.

Rank 2. The Wild Rabbit
Modern British Pub
A Cotswolds inn that pulls its produce straight from Daylesford's farm next door, so the bread, cheese, meat, and vegetables have had almost no time to reconsider their life choices before reaching the table. The Wild Rabbit is a gastropub with a log fire, worn leather armchairs, and an open kitchen, and it sits in the Top 50 Gastropubs list. The bar runs artisan ales alongside the kind of lagers nobody is embarrassed to order.

Rank 4. Anglesey Arms
British Pub
Sitting on the Goodwood Estate, this West Sussex pub draws walkers, golfers, and devoted regulars who rarely bother with the menu because they already know it cold. The kitchen runs British classics alongside modern bistro dishes and a run of small plates for grazers, while the bar keeps cask ales, lagers, and low-alcohol options. Cosy enough that staying for one more round barely feels like a decision.

Rank 4. Blind Jack
Beer Bar
A 400-year-old timber-framed building on Knaresborough's market square, Blind Jack's is a proper beer pub with five cask and ten craft lines pouring from a tiny bar that has no business handling that much traffic. Draught Bass sits alongside Black Sheep, but the rotating pumps wander toward American brown ales and porters. The 2025 Great British Pub Awards named it Best Beer Pub. You walk in feeling like a regular before you've ordered.

Wednesday's open mic night has been running longer than most local bands have been alive, and that's the clue to what Chaplin's is. This Boscombe pub won the Great British Pub Awards' Best Community Pub in 2025, and it earns the tag: live music five nights a week, colourful décor, a garden heading toward wedding-venue status, and a crowd that treats the place less like a bar and more like a second living room.

Rank 4. Crown Wharf
British Pub
The brewery tap for Joules, Crown Wharf sits on the original site of one of their first breweries, built almost entirely from reclaimed materials by a two-man crew that kept going through the pandemic. It's a proper pub with a theatre and heritage centre attached, which is not a sentence you write every day. The Great British Pub Awards named it Overall Great British Pub of the Year in 2025, and Stone seems to agree, judging by the crowd.

Rank 4. Gasoline American Bar
American
American memorabilia lines the walls of this lively bar and casual dining spot on Saltergate, where line dancing nights sit comfortably alongside quiz nights and live sport on the same weekly calendar. The vibe is broadly Americana, the crowd is local and loyal, and the programming is restless enough that there's usually something on. A 14th-century Grade I-listed manor house is the unlikely anchor of this sprawling south Staffordshire pub, where walkers and diners turn up in roughly equal numbers. Inside, art deco lighting and a Blue Room wrapped in a 360-degree mural sit comfortably beside the open kitchen and pizza oven. Outside, there are booths and a bookable teepee. Rank 4. Myrtle Tavern
British
A pub in a Leeds conservation area that won the Great British Pub Awards' Best Pub Garden two years running, and once you see the place, that tracks. What was a car park and field is now a two-tiered outdoor space with a terrace bar, wooden huts, and views over a cricket pitch. The planting is genuinely cared for, pollinator-friendly and all. A solid neighborhood pub where the garden is the whole point.

British
Every dog gets a colored cone on arrival, a quiet signal to the room about whether they're up for socializing or need a little space. Old Duke is a pub on the Southport outskirts that takes its canine clientele as seriously as the humans, with borrowed beds, blankets, treats, and a dedicated dog menu. It won the Great British Pub Awards Best Pub for Dogs in 2025, which tracks completely once you're inside.

A giant bowl of free dog treats greets you at the door, which tells you almost everything about this big, restored south London pub sitting between Catford and Sydenham. There's a kids' corner in the dining room, an adults-only terrace for anyone brave enough to call it date night, and a calendar of events so packed it makes community centres look idle. Seventeen screens, three Sky boxes, and sound zones that let different matches play in their own corners of the room: Pinnacle takes the sports pub formula pretty seriously. Pool, darts, and electronic basketball keep things moving between kickoffs, and the family-friendly hours mean it's not purely a fortress of lager and shouting. British
A pub whose back garden is so large it hosts its own Oktoberfest, sausage toss included. Inside, The Black Pug is a warren of cosy rooms; outside, there's covered seating, an outdoor bar, and enough room for a grumble of actual pugs, which is both the collective noun and, on any given weekend, an accurate headcount. Pizza Monday, Taco Tuesday, and free kids' meals on Friday keep the locals cycling through. Star Pub of the Year at the Great British Pub Awards 2025.

Pewter mugs hang from low beams in this National Trust-owned country pub that has been a fixture of Bretforton village life for centuries. Flagstone floors, roaring fires, and an orchard garden set the scene for real ale, food, and the occasional Morris dancing display. The Fox is a full pub and dining room, running from bar snacks with dogs welcome at your feet through to a kitchen that leans on seasonal, local produce for its menu of British classics with the occasional ecurious detour. Rank 4. The General Tarleton
Modern British Pub
A glass-roofed courtyard and a big terrace where walk-ins are always welcome set the tone at this gastropub near Knaresborough, part of Tommy Banks' growing Yorkshire operation. The kitchen runs on local produce and day-boat fish, mixing pub classics with the odd more ambitious move, all with a seasonal logic baked in from the start. British Pub
A traditional pub in the heart of the Peak District where food waste gets fed into a machine called Greedy George and comes out the other side as compost for the kitchen garden. The team behind The George has turned sustainable pub-keeping into something closer to a vocation, running an allotment, growing produce for the menu, and finding uses for beer-line chemicals that would surprise most landlords.

Modern British Pub
A thatched fourteenth-century pub in a tiny North Yorkshire village, the Star Inn holds a Michelin star and sits at number five on the Top 50 Gastropubs list, which tells you this is not your average moorland local. Fish comes from Whitby, game from the moors, and vegetables from the kitchen garden, all finding their way into cooking that is classical underneath and quietly inventive on top. Modern British Pub
The daily menu goes live online at 11am, which tells you something about how seriously this Highgate gastropub takes its kitchen. Produce comes from Highgate Butchers and a careful roster of suppliers, and the wine list has a reputation that pulls people in from well beyond N6. Treacle-glazed pig's cheeks and a Lancashire cheese soufflé anchor the menu at this smartly refurbished gastropub in a small Ribble Valley village, ranked in the UK's Top 50 Gastropubs. The cosy bar handles a quiet pint just fine, while the bright orangery dining room is where the kitchen gets serious: full-flavoured, unfussy cooking built on well-sourced produce. Rank 26. The Marksman
British Pub
The brown-tiled facade on Hackney Road hides a gastropub that genuinely runs on two speeds: a wood-panelled bar downstairs that feels like it hasn't shifted since the 1970s, and a calmer dining room upstairs where the kitchen, staffed by alumni of St. JOHN, turns out proudly seasonal British cooking. The philosophy is that eating should never feel like a hushed ordeal, and the menu, built around dressed crab and proper Sunday roasts, argues the point quietly but well.

The Merry Harriers is a proper country gastropub in the Surrey Hills, the kind that's been around forever but got a serious kitchen upgrade when the current team took over. A haggis Scotch egg on a Cornish pub menu is either very confused or very deliberate, and at The Tartan Fox it's very deliberate. Adam Handling's gastropub sits inside a stone country inn tucked into a forest on a caravan park outside Summercourt, which is a more charming setting than that sentence suggests. The kitchen leans on local Cornish producers while threading in Scottish touches throughout a generous, changing menu. The cheese doughnuts have become something of a signature.

Modern British Pub
The Patty & Bun founder's pivot from smash burgers to Thames-side gastropub is less of a stretch than it sounds. The Waterman's Arms sits right on the river in Barnes, with a balcony view that earns its keep and a bar downstairs for anyone who just wants a pint. Upstairs, the kitchen runs a produce-led menu of seasonal modern British cooking, with a blackboard of steaks and market fish doing the heavier lifting alongside bar snacks worth lingering over.

Wine comes in tumblers here, which tells you everything about the Anchor & Hope's attitude. It's a proper Southwark pub with burgundy walls, mismatched furniture, and no reservations, so the scramble for a table is part of the deal. The food skews modern British and generous, the crowd mixes locals with people who crossed town on purpose, and the whole thing manages to feel like a neighbourhood place that somehow everyone claims as their own.

Castle Combe has been called the prettiest village in England so many times the locals have stopped blushing, and the Castle Inn sits at its heart looking entirely complicit. It's a proper pub and gastropub with rooms, where the kitchen keeps things rooted in the landscape, Cotswold cider finding its way into the pork, local crab onto the brunch menu. Stone walls, a wood fire, and a bybrook outside doing its photogenic best.

A Georgian inn just off the market square in a small Dartmoor town, the Chagford Inn does the gastropub thing without making a fuss about it. Local farmers, coastal fishermen, and garden growers supply an ever-changing menu, and the kitchen butchers, bakes, and pastas in-house. The room is modern-rustic and comfortable, the kind of place where the food is serious but nobody's asking you to be.

A gastropub sitting right on the River Teme, with terraces that make it nearly impossible to eat inside on a fine day. Muddy walkers, well-behaved dogs, and people on date nights all seem equally at home here. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

Low ceilings and a centuries-old feel set the tone at this gastropub in Bray, where the kitchen runs on French technique and old-school British instincts. There's a private dining snug decorated with the chef's own artwork, which either charms you immediately or raises questions you probably shouldn't voice.

Modern British Pub
A thatched pub in Marlow with beamed ceilings and two Michelin stars, which sounds like a setup to a joke until the food arrives. Gastropub British Pub
The pub runs its own smallholding, kitchen garden, and bakery, so when the menu changes twice a day at this Welsh gastropub, it's because something was just harvested. Tom Watts-Jones trained at London's Anchor & Hope and brought that ethos to the Vale of Glamorgan, making everything from cultured butter to fresh pasta in-house. Sit in the bar, dining room, or garden for cooking that's unfussy but clearly serious about its ingredients.

The name comes from a long-lost family house in Burton on Trent, and the brewing heritage goes back centuries, which is a lot of backstory for a gastropub on Kensington Church Street. The food is there to keep company with the beer, not to upstage it, and mostly it holds to that bargain.
