The Best Places in San Francisco

Eat + Drink + Stay, change section
  1. The fish provenance is printed right on the menu, which tells you something about how seriously this cozy Novato sushi shop takes its sourcing. The chef behind the counter has spent years at serious Bay Area sushi bars, and he brings that same precision here without the reverent hush or the eye-watering bill. Lunch combinations and omakase sets keep things accessible, and you can even buy fish to take home.

  2. Rank 183. Nightbird

    American

A carved wooden owl marks the door to this intimate Hayes Valley tasting menu restaurant, which feels like someone's very tasteful living room if that person happened to know exactly what they were doing. The multicourse menu shifts with the seasons, and the kitchen's plating leans toward composed and precise without tipping into fussy. The adjacent Linden Room cocktail bar is a natural warm-up act.

  3. Rank 183. Omakase

    Edomae Sushi

Fish from Tokyo's Toyosu market, cured and aged using Edomae techniques, is the whole point of this intimate omakase counter, where three chefs handle just twelve seats at a time. The chef adjusts each guest's rice portion and wasabi individually, which sounds fussy until you realize how much it changes things. An old-school sushi bar that takes itself seriously, without taking the fun out of the room.

  4. Rank 183. Palette Tea House

    Upscale Cantonese

Pork and duck puffs shaped like little black swans are the opening move at this upscale dim sum house inside Ghirardelli Square, where the room earns its own attention with colored lanterns, tiled murals, and candle tea warmers. Classics come with upgrades: lobster where shrimp usually goes, squid ink in the fried rice. The bay-facing patio fills up fast on Sunday mornings with people who planned ahead, and a few who got lucky.

  5. Rank 183. Palm City

    American

A hoagie shop and wine store in the Outer Sunset that lets you drink your bottle purchase on-site for a small corkage fee, which is either a genius loophole or just good hospitality. The outdoor tables face roughly toward the ocean, making a clear evening here feel earned. The sandwiches lean ambitious, the wine list runs deep, and the neighborhood tends to show up in layers, from dog walkers to people who know what they're doing with a natural wine.

  6. Rank 183. R&G Lounge

    Cantonese Seafood

The dining room holds enough live-seafood tanks that you half expect a guided tour, but R&G Lounge is a Chinatown banquet-style restaurant where the point is the occasion. Dungeness crab fried in salt and pepper, black cod baked to the texture of soft butter, geoduck sliced thin for sashimi. The seafood swims until you order it, which settles the freshness question before it's even asked.

  7. Rank 183. Shoji

    Japanese

Shoji is a Japanese cafe in SoMa that does a quiet costume change once the offices empty out, trading lattes for a short menu of small plates and cocktails. By day the move is matcha, particularly the einspänner under a drift of whipped sweet cream. At night there are oysters, a fried chicken and egg salad sandwich, and a uni donburi, all of it easy on the wallet and the dress code. It has a few coffee honors, which seems fair.

  8. Rank 183. Snail Bar

    Natural Wine Bar

The snails are always on the menu, served in-shell with garlic confit and cashew miso butter, which tells you everything about this natural wine bar's sense of humor and ambition at once. The chef came up through serious kitchens, and the small plates land with a precision that the unfussy Shattuck Ave room does nothing to announce. The wine list runs deep on natural bottles, locals fill the parklet most nights, and the Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand.

  9. Rank 183. SPQR

    Italian

A slender Fillmore Street room where skylights and an open kitchen keep things bright despite how tightly packed the tables run. SPQR is a fine dining Italian with a California accent, meaning the handmade pastas get dyed with squid ink and cocoa and the menu shifts with whatever the season is showing off. Chef Matthew Accarrino has been here long enough that regulars treat the bartender like an old friend on reunion night.

  10. A cozy bungalow sushi shop tucked into Sausalito that's been part of the local fabric forever, Sushi Ran blends California farm-to-table thinking with straightforward Japanese technique in a way that resists easy categorization. The sake list is well-chosen, the fish is clean and consistent, and something like red curry-roasted cauliflower might show up alongside impeccable nigiri. The Michelin Guide has given it a Bib Gourmand.

  11. Rank 183. Sushi Shin

    Edomae Sushi

An L-shaped cypress wood bar in a quiet corner of downtown Redwood City, with the chef's knife work on full display throughout a two-and-a-half-hour Edomae-style omakase. The meal moves through small plates before reaching the nigiri, and the sourcing leans seasonal and obscure enough that hairy crab and Japanese halfbeak appear without apology. Dinner offers a premium tier for rarer finds; lunch runs a shorter version for the sensible.

  12. The peacock-blue awning and manicured topiaries flanking the entrance give this Union Square hotel the feel of a very well-dressed New York apartment building. Inside, marble and a crystal chandelier are softened by orchids and deep couches, keeping the lobby intimate rather than grand. Rooms run warm and golden, with window seats and writing desks. The top-floor suite seats eight for dinner, in case you've overcommitted.

  13. Rank 183. The Buena Vista

    Cocktail Bar

The bar faces San Francisco Bay, with Alcatraz and the Golden Gate framed in the windows, which does a lot of the work before you even sit down. The Buena Vista is an old-school saloon that claims credit for introducing Irish coffee to America, and the bar staff still make them in assembly-line batches. Come at 9am or midnight; the order is the same either way. It won the Spirited Awards' Timeless U.S. Award in 2024, which is about right.

  14. A 25-story Brutalist tower near the Embarcadero that got a very good interior decorator, The Jay is a design-forward hotel where midcentury California aesthetics meet Japanese-American modernist influences, courtesy of AvroKO's Ruth Asawa-inspired rooms. Tone-on-tone colors, warm wood, and custom art fill even the smallest rooms, which still run over 400 square feet. Ask for something above the 15th floor and the Bay Bridge fills your window.

  15. The smell hits before you sit down: salt air, grill smoke, charred shells, then garlic butter. This is an oyster bar and smokehouse perched on a deck above Tomales Bay, an hour from San Francisco and a world away from it. Raw and grilled oysters from Tomales Bay Oyster Co. are the move, though there are fish tacos and sandwiches too. Deck seating is first come, first served, so arriving early is less a suggestion than a strategy.

  17. Rank 217. Absinthe

    French

The menu is divided into Acte I, Acte II, and Acte III, which tells you everything about the neighborhood this French brasserie has anchored for decades. Hayes Valley locals and pre-curtain opera crowds fill the room most nights, and the kitchen leans into French classics with a fondness for deconstruction. The beverage program keeps pace, with seasonal cocktails and a French 75 built on a French single malt that somehow feels obvious in retrospect.

  18. Rank 217. Arsicault

    Bakery

Weekend lines form outside this Inner Richmond bakery before most people have finished their coffee, and the croissants are why. They shatter into a thousand airy layers on first bite, the kind that make every other version feel like a compromise. Pain au chocolat and a ham and cheese round out the short menu. The Civic Center location adds seating and sandwiches, but the original is a pilgrimage of the buttery kind.

  19. Rank 217. China Live

    Chinese

A high-ceilinged casual dining room with sizzling woks going on what feels like a hawker center's worth of burners at once, China Live sprawls across multiple floors of Chinatown to fit in a retail section, a cocktail bar, and a fine dining room besides. The main floor does Chinese cooking in several regional styles, from scallion breads rolled like cinnamon buns to mapo tofu that earns the word tingly. Chatty tourists fill the place, which seems to suit everyone just fine.

  20. Rank 217. Cordon Bleu

    Vietnamese

The charbroiler at this pocket-size Vietnamese diner on California Street has been smoking up five-spice chicken and pork since the neighborhood was a different place. A dozen seats total, three to a table and nine at the counter, where you can watch the kitchen move with practiced, unhurried efficiency. Combo plates are the whole point, and the imperial rolls are fearsomely crunchy in a way that feels non-negotiable.

  21. Drunken noodles with smoky barbecue brisket is not what the cookbook intended, and that's precisely the point at this Laurel District Thai restaurant. The kitchen plays fast and loose with tradition, seasoning a pork burger to taste like laab and calibrating heat levels for anyone who thinks "medium" is already pushing it. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, with cocktails that pull their weight alongside the food.

  22. Rank 217. Koi Palace

    Cantonese

The koi ponds in the dining room are the first hint that this isn't your average dim sum operation. Koi Palace is a sprawling, upscale Cantonese dim sum hall in Daly City that's been an anchor of the Bay Area scene forever, and the carts still move with unusual confidence. A James Beard semifinalist, it draws weekend crowds willing to wait for siu mai that skew smaller and fresher than the genre norm.

  23. Rank 217. La Costanera

    Peruvian

The Pacific is right outside the windows at this contemporary Peruvian restaurant on the Half Moon Bay coast, which sets a high bar for post-beach dining. The kitchen moves between traditional and modern, turning out ceviches with real heat and acid alongside heartier rice dishes loaded with seafood. The cocktail list and a house chicha morada give you reasons to linger past sundown, when the view earns its keep.

  24. Rank 217. Lily

    Vietnamese

The French dip bánh mì arrives with a cup of beef phở jus for dunking, which tells you everything about how this Inner Richmond restaurant handles Vietnamese food. Chef Rob Lam pulls from both classic technique and contemporary Saigon street food, so the menu lands somewhere between a chicken consommé you'd linger over and jackfruit "pizza" on crispy rice paper. Closer to a special-occasion dinner than a casual bowl spot, price-wise.

  25. Rank 217. Marufuku Ramen

    Japanese Noodle Shop

Marufuku is a ramen shop on the second floor of Japantown's Japan Center mall, and the line snaking out before they open tells you everything about how the neighborhood feels about it. The Hakata-style tonkotsu runs cloudy and deep, with thin noodles and slow-cooked pork belly. The chicken paitan is lighter but no less serious. Expect a wait, and consider using that time to decide whether you're ordering the deluxe.

  26. A motel-shaped boutique hotel in the Tenderloin with a courtyard big enough to park a tour bus, which is not an accident. The Phoenix was a rock-and-roll crash pad for decades before boutique hotels were a category, hosting everyone from Bowie to Nirvana. Texas-based Bunkhouse now runs it, and the rooms are compact, bold, and comfortable without pretending to be luxury. The pool, ringed with palms, remains the social center.

  27. A waterfront shack that's been around forever, Red's serves its burgers on crusty sourdough with mustard and pickles, which is not the burger you were expecting but absolutely the one the regulars order without looking up. Anthony Bourdain's photo hangs near the register, which tells you something. Grab a table outside on a sunny day and you get the Bay Bridge thrown in, arguably at the lowest price point the Embarcadero has to offer.

  28. The fried chicken sandwich here follows a family recipe from the co-owner of Rich Table, which tells you this isn't your average rotisserie counter. Pickled onions, chipotle yogurt, mint, dill, and a honey drizzle all show up in one sandwich, and fermented hot sauce sits on every table for good measure. The fries come dusted with porcini powder. Casual, order-at-the-counter, and close enough to Alamo Square to make a picnic the obvious move.

  29. Rank 217. Viridian

    Cocktail Bar

Cocktail bar in Oakland's uptown neighborhood, Viridian takes its interior cues from Hong Kong cinema and 90s album covers, which sounds like a mood board disaster but lands as something genuinely electric. The bar director comes from Lazy Bear, and the cocktails lean savory and seasonal with a pull toward Asian flavors. A Top 10 Nominee for a Spirited Award and a 50 Discovery listing round out a résumé that the room feels like it earned.

  30. The check-in desk glows pink and purple, and the bar has LED lights embedded in it, so you know exactly what kind of hotel this is before you've touched your keycard. The W SoMa sits a short walk from SFMOMA in a neighborhood that suits its energy, with decor that leans into the spectacle rather than apologizing for it. A good fit if you want a design-forward hotel and a central SoMa address over a muted boutique experience.

  31. Rank 217. Wood Tavern

    Californian Italian Tavern

The copper-topped bar fills up early with Rockridge regulars who treat this neighborhood restaurant like a second living room. It's Italian-inflected California cooking in a rustic room, the kind of place where the charcuterie board arrives before you've fully settled in. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and surrounded by bookshops and antique stores, which tells you pretty much everything about the crowd.

  33. Rank 233. Al Carajo

    Yucatecan Taqueria

Purple ube tortillas are the opening move at this compact Mission taqueria, where the kitchen leans Yucatecan rather than the Bay Area standard. Cochinita pibil arrives with real tart depth and habanero salsa that bites back, and a pastor negro made with black adobo keeps things interesting. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the best taco spots in the Bay Area, which tracks for a place this quietly opinionated about the form.

  38. Rank 233. Che Fico

    Italian

The name is Italian slang for "how cool," which sets the tone immediately. This NoPa taverna pulls off the neat trick of feeling genuinely chic while cooking entirely rustic, wood-fired Italian, the kind of place where the blistered pizzas and handmade salumi make the room's good looks feel incidental. Reservations stay competitive all week, so the bar, stocked with cocktails built around things like green walnut and basil eau de vie, does steady work as a fallback plan.

  39. Rank 233. Dalva

    Cocktail Bar

Old movies flicker on the back wall while a dozen taps keep the noise level honest in this sprawling Mission dive bar. The high-ceilinged room is hung with oversized art and loud enough that conversation is more of a suggestion. Duck through to The Hideout in back and the whole register shifts: a quieter, more considered cocktail bar hiding inside the chaos. Esquire put it on their Best Bars in America list, and the two rooms together explain why.

  40. Rank 233. Deli Board

    American

A pastrami-forward deli on Folsom where the menu reads like a roster of characters named by someone's uncle in Canarsie. The Menschkowitz throws cherry peppers into the mix; the BK goes full diner breakfast between two slices of bread. Everything arrives with thick pickles on the side, which is the correct move. Sandwiches aren't cheap, and it's takeout only, so plan accordingly.

Dragon Beaux is a contemporary Cantonese spot in the Richmond where the siu mai comes topped with crab roe and the barbecue buns have a crunchy sugar crust that makes you rethink every bun you've had before. 42. Fresh pasta lines the shelves at this Mission storefront, the casual offshoot of the Flour + Water restaurant around the corner, but the sandwiches are the reason to pull up a stool at lunch. The eggplant parm, bolstered by kale pesto and burrata, is the kind of thing you think about on the walk home.

  44. An old-school neighborhood butcher and sandwich counter in the Sunset, where the meat is weighed after slicing so your Italian sub doesn't tilt the table. That discipline produces something balanced rather than heroic: the Toscano lines up salami, coppa, provolone, and pepperoncini like they've been rehearsing. In-house roasted turkey, ham, and pork fill out the case, and on Tuesdays the Zinfandel-marinated tri-tip is the move.

  45. A 1903 Georgian Revival building with long wraparound porches and rocking chairs, sitting inside the Presidio with a sliver of Golden Gate Bridge peeking over the trees. This intimate B&B offers full breakfast, evening wine and cheese, and beds that apparently inspire loyalty. It's quiet enough to forget the city exists, which is the whole point, and 24 miles of trails begin more or less at the door.

  46. Rank 233. JouJou

    French

A glowing Calacatta Viola raw bar piled with oysters anchors the room at this seafood-forward French restaurant in the Design District. David Barzelay of Lazy Bear calls it "big tent French," meaning classic technique with detours through New Orleans and the French West Indies. The room moves through moody lit spaces, plush banquettes, and people-watching booths, and the vibe lands closer to "one more round" than white tablecloth.

  47. Vintage Thai movie posters cover the walls at this West Portal neighborhood Thai spot, where the kitchen takes familiar dishes somewhere more playful. Short rib fried rice comes with cured egg yolk; fried papaya salad arrives battered and crisp with dressing on the side. The kaya toast, pandan custard on pillowy milk bread with a scoop of ice cream, landed on The Infatuation's dessert list and you'll see why. Good for families who want something livelier than the usual takeout routine.

  48. Rank 233. Loquat

    Diaspora-inspired Jewish Patisserie

A pastry shop on Gough inspired by Jewish diaspora baking, where every drink arrives with a cube of halva whether you asked for it or not. The team behind it came up through Tartine, and the instincts show: babka with a proper crust, pistachio cream puffs, spiced Turkish coffee cream pie. A James Beard Semifinalist for Outstanding Pastry Chef, and a cozy, specific kind of place that knows exactly what it wants to be.

  49. Rank 233. Lovely’s

    American

A smashburger shop built into a shipping container alongside Two Pitchers Brewing Co., Lovely's has a menu that reads like a love letter to drive-through nostalgia. Picnic tables and string lights fill the dog-friendly outdoor space. The fried onion burger, a riff on the Oklahoma classic George Motz made famous, cooks the patty right into thinly sliced onions so the beef fat goes everywhere it should.

  50. Rank 233. Lucinda's Deli

    Sandwich Shop

A sandwich counter in NoPa where modifications are not on the menu, full stop. The team builds everything with enough conviction that you'll forget you wanted to swap something out, and condiments like bagna cauda mayo and artichoke cream cheese make clear this is not a cold-cuts-and-mustard situation. The shop is takeout only, but Alamo Square Park is a short walk, which is either a feature or a hint to leave promptly.

The hủ tiếu nam vang, with its clear broth and shrimp fritter, is the kind of thing people describe to strangers, and the beef stew comes with a fluffy loaf of bread for soaking up the braise. 54. Rank 233. Moya

    Ethiopian

A small Ethiopian restaurant in SoMa where the injera arrives lined with careful, spiced preparations and the meatless plates hold their own against the meat without anyone making a fuss about it. The kitchen leans into berbere and slow-cooked sauces, and the house-made cheese is the kind of quiet addition that makes you order it. It doubles as a community gathering space with deep roots in the Tigrayan diaspora.

  55. Rank 233. Newkirk's

    East Coast American

Pinball machines and white walls set the scene at this Potrero Hill sandwich shop, where the menu runs on East Coast bodega logic: Kaiser rolls, poppy seeds, and a bacon-egg-and-cheese that doesn't apologize for itself. Pastrami swaps in for the pork if that's your move. Ask for the lacto-fermented hot sauces, which bring enough acid and heat to make everything sharper. Casual, low-key, and named among the Bay Area's better sandwich spots by the Chronicle.

  56. Rank 233. Oink & Oscar

Every sandwich at this sandwich shop contains pork, which tells you almost everything you need to know. The signature is porkstrami, a brined and smoked pork butt that earns its place alongside coppa, salami, and mortadella in the loaded Salvatore, served hot on a Dutch crunch roll. Turkey and roast beef exist if you insist. Old-timey novelty sodas handle cleanup duty. Bring your appetite and leave your dietary restrictions at the door.

  57. Rank 233. Pearl 6101

A former drugstore in the Outer Richmond that went full Cal-Italian neighborhood restaurant, with the soaring ceilings and oversized windows to prove it. By day it's airy and bright; by night the candles take over and whole albums play instead of playlists, which is either charming or a statement. The kitchen does rustic pasta and seasonal proteins, and the Italian-leaning wine list is genuinely well-chosen.

  58. Rank 233. Penny Roma

    Italian

The courtyard alone explains why reservations disappear. Penny Roma is a casual Italian trattoria in the Mission from the Flour + Water team, with handmade pasta and a California instinct for what's in season at the farmers market this week. The room is dense with plants, the focaccia arrives puffed and fragrant, and the stuffed pasta tends toward the kind of richness that makes you forget you ordered a second glass of wine.

  59. Rank 233. Piglet & Co

    Taiwanese

The pork toast, shrimp mousse pressed onto Japanese milk bread, is the detail that explains why this Taiwanese comfort food restaurant filled up fast after opening in the Mission. The chef came up through pop-up days, and that restless, inventive energy carried over into a full room and a menu that swings between numbing mala ribs and a silky tofu pudding. Eater named it one of the best new restaurants in America in 2023.

  60. Rank 233. Pineapple King

    Chinese Bakery

The bolo bao here comes out warm, its lacquered sugar crust crackling under your fingers, and the move is to order it with a pat of cold flavored butter, maybe pandan, maybe salted egg yolk. This Chinese bakery in the Sunset keeps things focused: egg tarts and mooncakes round out the case, but the pineapple bun is the whole argument. Lines form with conviction, so an online order saves time. Cash only in person.

  63. The salmon here gets cured and smoked in-house, which tells you most of what you need to know about how seriously this bagel shop takes itself. Schlok's sits just off the Panhandle, turning out traditional malty bagels with a thin, crisp crust and a caper schmear that leans hard into brine. Co-founded by a chef with Michelin-starred kitchen time, it punches well above the cream-cheese-from-a-tub competition.

  64. Rank 233. Sfizio

    Italian

Counter-service pasta shop in Rockridge where everything on the menu costs less than a glass of wine at the place next door. You order at the register, grab a seat inside or out, and wait for housemade pasta that tracks the seasons, except for the spaghetti, which stays put year-round because nobody has complained. The Sfizio cocktail, amaro with tonic and lime, is a good reason not to order water.

  65. Rank 233. Shan Dong

    Chinese

The handmade dumplings and rope-thick noodles in sesame paste have kept this Northern Chinese restaurant an anchor of Oakland's Chinatown for what feels like forever. The room is utilitarian in the best sense: Lazy Susans, communal tables, and staff who will seat you next to strangers when the place fills up, which it does. Order something chewy and don't expect to spend much.

  68. The servers here will gladly walk you through the nuances of vegan cheeses without a trace of condescension, which sets the tone for this plant-based restaurant in Cow Hollow. The menu reads like a convincing case for skipping meat, and the burgers, built on mushrooms and spinach with chipotle aioli and tomato chutney, give skeptics a comfortable entry point. A good first date for the vegan-curious.

  69. Rank 233. World Famous Hotboys

    Nashville Southern

A hot chicken shop that started as a popup and grew into an East Bay institution with a '90s aesthetic that nobody asked them to drop. The bone-in and the sandwiches are the move, and the heat scale is honest, meaning medium is a real warning and anything above it is a commitment. Complimentary comeback sauce arrives ready to talk you off the ledge. Nashville-style fried chicken done without ceremony.

  70. Steamed momos are the anchor here, plump Nepalese dumplings served with a tomato-cilantro sauce that splits the difference between salsa and chutney. Bini's Kitchen is a casual counter spot, the brick-and-mortar home of a catering operation that built its reputation on those dumplings alone. Combo meals let you mix in vegetarian stews and grilled meats, and the whole thing stays firmly in lunch-money territory. The Howard Street location is the one with actual seats.

  71. Rank 270. Hook Fish Co

    Baja Taqueria

The Baja-style fish taco is the reason people show up at this casual order-at-the-counter seafood spot in the Outer Sunset. Rockfish comes out of the fryer in a shattering crust, and the carrot habanero salsa is bright and sharp enough to keep things interesting without just torching your tongue. San Francisco Chronicle named them among the best tacos in the Bay Area, and the regulars here behave accordingly.

  73. A Victorian-lined block in Lower Pac Heights is a suspiciously good address for a neighborhood restaurant, and the regulars here know it. Melissa Perello runs a warm, elegant room where the cooking leans on local produce without making a big speech about it. House-made pasta, a levain that arrives before you've settled in, and seasonal desserts that actually earn the menu space. Plan ahead: the tables go fast to people who live around the corner.

  74. A tucked-away New American restaurant on a quiet Bernal Heights block, 3rd Cousin grew out of a run of pop-ups that built enough of a following to fund a real room. The chef's seasonal cooking goes wherever it wants, so handmade truffle ravioli shares the menu with uni crème brûlée. Neighbors who know the menu by heart fill most of the seats on any given night, which tells you something about how the neighborhood feels about it.

    Seafood French

Warm tones, natural wood, and golden lighting make this Inner Sunset bistro feel like someone's very stylish living room, if that living room happened to serve buckwheat crepes and surf-and-turf crudo. The menu runs French but without the rulebook, leaning seasonal and local in a way that keeps things genuinely interesting visit to visit. Sharing plates reward a table of friends, and brunch draws the neighborhood in reliably.

  76. Check-in is handled at a kiosk, which either sounds like your nightmare or exactly right. CitizenM is a design-forward hotel that keeps rooms small, smart, and genuinely comfortable, with tablet controls for everything including the mood lighting you'll spend ten minutes adjusting. The lobby doubles as a bar, café, and co-working space open around the clock. It sits on a quiet block just above Market, with Union Square, SoMa, and the Financial District all close.

  77. The blue-painted building with a red neon sign on Shattuck Avenue does not undersell what's inside. This is a sousaku izakaya, meaning the menu leans into New Japanese cooking, the kind you'd find in Tokyo or Osaka right now: hot pot, skewers, fried fish cakes, seasonal sashimi added only because regulars kept asking. The menu rotates constantly, which makes repeat visits feel less like loyalty and more like good sense.

  78. Rank 274. Hed 11

    Thai

An 11-course Thai tasting menu inside the Kimpton Hotel Enso, where sweet and savory blur together so deliberately that a coconut pancake arrives with caviar and cheesecake comes topped with crispy fried onions. The chef draws on regional Thai flavors without treating them as a museum exhibit, building a miniature banquet that moves faster than the price tag might suggest. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

  82. The old Pacific Building facade dates back forever, but the rooms inside have been quietly modernized with pops of color and calm, residential warmth. This hotel sits at 4th and Market, which is as close to the center of San Francisco as a pin on a map gets, with Union Square, SoMa, and Chinatown all walkable. Dirty Habit, the in-house cocktail bar and restaurant, handles dinner well enough that you might not wander far on your first night.

  84. The Beefeater doormen on Powell Street have been a Union Square landmark forever, and they set the tone: theatrical, a little grand, entirely committed to the bit. The Sir Francis Drake is a classic full-service hotel with Art Deco bones, comfortable rooms on the smaller side, and enough happening inside, from Scala's Bistro to the penthouse Starlight Room, that leaving feels optional. The Powell Street cable car stops at the front door, which is either convenient or a trap.

  85. Rank 274. La Marcha

    Spanish

The smell of saffron hits you before you reach the door, which is a reasonable promise to make. La Marcha is a Spanish tapas and paella restaurant on San Pablo where the jamón legs hanging in the back corner set the decorative tone. Paellas come in enough variations to anchor a group, and the happy hour draws solo diners to the L-shaped bar for wine and free bites. Rustic, lively, and never quiet.

  86. Charlie Palmer owns this place, but you'd never know it from the branding. The Mystic is a hotel in a 1906 building two blocks from Union Square, renovated carefully enough that the rooms feel more like a prewar San Francisco apartment than a boutique property. They run small, so book a suite if you need to spread out. Downstairs, Burritt Room + Tavern does craft cocktails and seasonal American food against live jazz six nights a week.

  87. Rank 274. Nopalito

    Mexican

Blue-corn tacos, sustainable sourcing, and a no-reservations policy that the neighborhood has accepted as part of the deal. This cheerful Mexican spot in NoPa fills a small room dressed in reclaimed wood and green accents with local couples and families, all working through a menu that runs from chilaquiles to empanadas to pulled-pork tortillas. The kind of place where comfort and conscience occupy the same table without making a fuss about it.

  88. A boutique hotel that leans into San Francisco's bohemian bones rather than fighting them, the Palihotel sits in Union Square and runs on the small chain's signature approach: design-forward rooms without the fussiness that usually comes with them. It's the kind of place that attracts the laptop-and-oat-milk crowd without feeling like a co-working space with beds. The Michelin Guide includes it among its selected hotels.

    Cocktail Bar

  91. Perched at the top of Nob Hill, the Huntington is one of those old-school San Francisco hotels that feels like it was built to outlast everything around it, and has. Ken Fulk's renovation kept the bones and sharpened the rest, so rooms still feel like proper apartments rather than hotel boxes, the Big Four Restaurant channels gilded-age railroad money, and Arabella's Cocktail Salon manages to feel both cozy and theatrical at once.

    The awards

  92. The lobby looks like Belle Époque Paris reassembled by someone with very strong opinions about color, which sets the tone for the whole hotel. Two blocks from Union Square, the Marker puts most of downtown San Francisco in easy walking distance. Rooms are comfortable rather than lavish, with good linens and modern bathrooms. The in-house Italian trattoria, Tratto, is worth a stop before you head out.

  93. Rank 296. ABV

    Creative Cocktail Bar

A cocktail bar in the Mission that looks, from the outside, like it has no particular ambitions. Inside, three bartenders run a tight menu organized by spirit, with drinks that lean creative without requiring a glossary to order. Grapefruit shrubs and smoked pear bitters show up alongside draft beer and wine for anyone not in the mood to commit. The vibe is casual enough that nobody will judge your order either way.

  94. Rank 296. Bansang

    Korean

The name nods to a style of communal dining that traces back to the Joseon royal court, but nothing here feels like a museum piece. This Korean tapas spot on Fillmore folds parmesan and chorizo into kimchi fried rice without apology, then pivots to a chilled fermented chili broth with raw seafood like it's all perfectly obvious. The Michelin Guide thinks so too, awarding it a Bib Gourmand. Order generously and plan to negotiate over the fried chicken.

  95. Rank 296. Beit Rima

    Middle Eastern

Floral murals cover the dining room walls and custom Arab pop art fills the gaps, all by design: the name translates to "Rima's Home," a tribute to the chef's mother, and the room is meant to feel like one. This is a shareable mezze spot in Duboce Triangle, cheap and cheerful, where the table fills up fast with dips, baked halloumi, and chicken shish tawook while the room gets louder around you.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
