Rank 2. Virtue
Southern
A Bib Gourmand Southern restaurant anchoring Hyde Park, where the university crowd comes to eat properly instead of grabbing something fast. The room has a real bar and a dining room that actually looks like someone tried, and the kitchen turns out Southern cooking that feels both considered and genuinely comforting. The kind of place where you leave full in a way that takes planning. Dress like you have somewhere to be afterward.

Rank 7. Moody Tongue
Contemporary
A Michelin-starred tasting menu perched above a working brewery, where the beer pairing isn't an afterthought but the whole point. The kitchen turns out genuinely ambitious contemporary food, and the house-crafted brews keep pace with every course in a way that makes wine pairing feel a little old-fashioned. The room is dark, close, and quietly serious, full of people who did their research and dressed accordingly.
-
-
Rank 9. Smyth
Contemporary
Three Michelin stars in a room that feels more like a chic lounge than a cathedral to fine dining, which is exactly why Smyth works. The open kitchen keeps things human while the kitchen does quietly wild things with seasonal produce, some of it from their own garden. Couples on serious dates and food obsessives in nice sneakers fill the room, all of them pretending to stay calm when the next course arrives.
-
Rank 10. Oriole
French-Japanese New American
Two Michelin stars in a converted warehouse where you ride a freight elevator to reach one of Chicago's most serious tasting menus. The room is quietly dramatic, the service is the kind that anticipates things before you ask, and the cooking blends French and Japanese instincts in ways that feel inevitable rather than showy. Couples dressed like it matters share the room with people who've clearly been saving up for this one.

Rank 13. Ever
Creative
Curtis Duffy is one of the few chefs a casual diner might actually Google on the way to the restaurant, and Ever is why. It's a two-Michelin-star tasting menu in Fulton Market, with the kind of room where the lighting is moody, the tables are far apart, and the service knows exactly what it's doing. First-date energy, but make it formal. The cocktail bar next door, After, is the perfect excuse to keep the night going.

Rank 14. Alinea
Creative
Grant Achatz's modernist fine dining temple has held two Michelin stars forever, and dinner here is less a meal than a controlled fever dream. Scented vapors drift by, courses arrive in forms you won't predict, and dessert gets splattered directly onto the table like a Jackson Pollock. The crowd is a mix of anniversary couples and people who planned this trip around the reservation. Dress up; this one earns it.
-
Rank 15. Sepia
New American
Sepia is a Michelin-starred fine dining room that manages to feel genuinely grown-up without making you feel like you're in trouble. The space was a print shop in another life, and the exposed brick and dramatic chandeliers give it real bones. The chef pulls from Southeast Asian, Korean, and Mediterranean influences without letting any one of them take over, so the menu reads American but keeps surprising you. First-date energy, with everyone looking quietly pleased with themselves.
-
Rank 16. Kasama
Filipino
Kasama is a two-Michelin-star tasting menu spot in Ukrainian Village that makes a genuinely compelling case for modern Filipino cooking, which is reason enough to book. The husband-and-wife team behind it brings serious fine-dining chops to dishes that feel personal and inventive without being showy about it. The room is unfussy, the crowd leans curious and dressed-up-but-not-stuffy, and the desserts alone justify staying for every course.

Rank 17. Birrieria Zaragoza
Mexican
This tiny taco shop on the Southwest Side has a Bib Gourmand and a one-item menu, which is either the most confident move in Chicago or just the most correct one. That item is birria, slow-stewed goat served bone-in or bone-out, plate or bowl. The regulars already know to go bone-in. Everyone else figures it out fast. Cash, no frills, and a room full of people who drove across town on purpose.

Rank 18. EL Ideas
Contemporary
This Michelin-starred tasting menu operates like the world's best dinner party, because technically it is one. The chef lives upstairs, brings everyone in at once, and lets you wander the kitchen while the food is being cooked. Bring your own wine, as much as you want. The cooking is genuinely playful and weird in the best way. It draws the kind of crowd that's done fine dining and finds this more fun, which is probably correct.
-
Rank 19. Feld
Contemporary
A Michelin-starred tasting menu in Ukrainian Village that's genuinely obsessed with what's growing nearby, and it shows. The kitchen sits in the middle of the room, so you're basically watching the whole performance whether you planned to or not. The crowd tends toward curious food people who actually read the menu. If the weather's good, the backyard fire pit turns dinner into something you'll still be talking about Monday.

Modern Indian
Michelin-starred modern Indian fine dining on a quiet River North block, where the tasting menu arrives looking like gallery pieces and somehow still manages to taste like home cooking from across the subcontinent. The room pulls off warehouse bones alongside white tablecloths and rose-pink booths without breaking a sweat, which tells you exactly who's in it: people dressed up enough to feel the occasion but too cool to admit they're impressed.

Rank 21. Galit
Modern Middle Eastern
Galit is a Michelin-starred prix-fixe on Lincoln Ave doing modern Middle Eastern food that actually earns the hype. The hummus alone would justify the trip, and the warm pita coming off the flame seals the deal. Wines sourced from Armenia, Lebanon, and Palestine give the beverage program a genuinely interesting angle. The room runs warm and lively, full of people who dressed up just enough to feel like the night matters.
-
Rank 22. Topolobampo
Mexican
Rick Bayless is one of those celebrity chefs even non-food people actually know, and Topolobampo is where he does his finest work. It's a proper fine dining room on the more dressed-up end of Chicago's restaurant scene, built around seasonal Mexican cooking that takes tradition seriously without getting stiff about it. The agave spirits pairing is genuinely worth doing. The crowd runs dressed-up date-night to special-occasion regulars who know exactly what they're ordering.
-
Rank 23. Boka
Modern New American
Boka has held a Michelin star for years and somehow never feels like it's trying too hard about it. It's an upscale dinner spot on North Halsted that manages to feel romantic without being stiff, the kind of room where date-night couples and quietly celebratory groups both look like they belong. The modern American menu leans seasonal and precise, and the cocktail program is worth treating as a whole separate agenda.

Every few months, Next completely reinvents itself around a new culinary theme, so the menu you heard about is probably already gone. It's a Michelin-starred tasting experience in Fulton Market where the kitchen commits fully to whatever world they've built, whether that's ancient Rome or classic French haute cuisine. The crowd leans into it too, dressed up and ready to be surprised. Dinner here is genuinely theatrical, in the best possible way.
-
Rank 25. Esmé
Contemporary
Esmé holds a Michelin star and earns it by treating dinner as a genuine art event, not just a metaphor for one. It's a fine dining tasting menu in Lincoln Park, set in a bright, gallery-like space where each course arrives on a piece made by a local artist. The crowd leans creative and curious, dressed up but not stuffy. The food is genuinely surprising, in a good way, not a "why is there foam on this" way.

Contemporary
Schwa is a Michelin-starred tasting menu spot that has absolutely zero interest in behaving itself. No servers, rap blasting overhead, and a kitchen that seems to treat every convention as a dare. The crowd is adventurous and a little smug about knowing this place exists, and honestly, fair enough. The food is genuinely unhinged in the best way, and the chefs might end your meal by offering you a shot of whiskey.

A Bib Gourmand Vietnamese spot in Pilsen that goes well beyond pho and banh mi, serving dishes most menus never bother with. The room has good bones, an open kitchen, a proper bar, and communal tables that fill up with the kind of regulars who already know to order the duck salad. Rank 40. Creepies
French
The name is a bit of a fake-out: this is a genuinely charming French bistro on Randolph with checkered floors, art on the stone walls, and a short menu that splits the difference between classic bistro cooking and something a little more Midwestern and personal. Pickling and fermentation show up throughout, and dessert regularly involves worlds colliding in the best way. The room seats very few, so book ahead.

Boonie's is a tiny, homey Filipino spot on Western that earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand and will make you feel personally attacked for not coming sooner. It started as a food stall, and the menu is still wonderfully focused, built around garlic rice so fragrant the whole room smells incredible every time someone lifts the cooker lid. Pork runs the show in several forms, and the deep-fried plantain spring roll dessert is basically a handheld crème brûlée.

Rank 84. Girl & The Goat
New American
Girl & The Goat is a loud, lively West Randolph spot that's been packed since forever, and for good reason. The menu is built around bold, shareable plates, including a whole section dedicated to goat, which sounds like a dare but tastes like a reason to come back. The crowd is groups, regulars, and families who all seem genuinely happy to be there. Rustic beams, dim corners, and good energy make it feel like a party someone actually planned.

Rank 85. Acanto

Rank 86. Ciccio Mio
Italian
Ciccio Mio is a Bib Gourmand-winning Italian-American spot that leans hard into the throwback fantasy, checkered tablecloths and all, without being cheesy about it. The Hogsalt group behind it knows how to throw a party, and the portions prove it. Pastas are made in-house, the chicken is coal-roasted, and the tiramisu is the kind of dessert that makes you cancel your next thing. Dress like you mean it, but not too much.

Rank 87. Gilt Bar
American
Gilt Bar is a dark, grown-up gastrobar in River North that's been setting the moody-basement-tavern standard for years. The front bar does cocktails with quiet confidence, while the back room, all studded leather and warm light, fills up with the kind of crowd that orders the pot pie and somehow also finds room for a slab of carrot cake. Big flavors, Bib Gourmand prices, zero pretension.

Rank 89. Sifr
Wood-Fired Middle Eastern
Sifr is a wood-fired Middle Eastern spot in River North where the whole table becomes a landscape of dips, grilled plates, and things you'll quietly refuse to share. The hummus alone, topped with charred chickpeas and zhoug, is worth the trip, and everything coming off the grill backs it up. It's casual enough for a weeknight but the food earns its Bib Gourmand. End with the house-made ice cream and you'll leave annoyingly satisfied.

Rank 93. Mott St.
Midwest Chinese
Mott St. is a casual, Bucktown spot that does something genuinely hard to pull off: cooking that's rooted in Asian flavors but filtered through a Midwest sensibility, and it all tastes like it belongs together. The room draws the kind of crowd that's cool without trying too hard, which is basically the Bucktown uniform. It's a Bib Gourmand pick, so the food punches well above what you'd expect to pay. Go hungry and order like you mean it.

Rank 95. Table, Donkey and Stick
Alpine German
A Bib Gourmand neighborhood spot on Armitage doing Alpine German food with genuine personality, which is a sentence you don't get to say often. The rustic inn vibe draws Logan Square regulars who came for a quick drink and somehow ended up at a communal table two hours later. The charcuterie is a serious way to start, and the kitchen keeps surprising you all the way through to dessert. Cozy, affordable, and quietly weird in the best way.
-
Rank 96. Chef's Special Cocktail Bar
American Chinese
A cocktail bar and Chinese-American dining room that wears its nostalgia with zero irony, Chef's Special is loud, colorful, and genuinely fun. The U-shaped bar draws a young, casually dressed crowd who came for a drink and somehow ended up ordering half the menu. Crab rangoon, dan dan noodles, fried rice loaded with pork and shrimp, it all hits the way you remember hoping it would as a kid. Bib Gourmand, and deservedly so.
-
Rank 97. Lardon
Salumeria Italian
The pig cutout over the door tells you everything you need to know. Lardon is an all-day salumeria in Logan Square where the curing chamber is literally on display, packed with hanging soppressata and chorizo. Charcuterie boards, deli sandwiches, honeycomb tile floors, old wood beams overhead. The crowd skews neighborhood regulars who know exactly what they're ordering. It's earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and weekends drift into proper bistro territory.
-
Rank 98. Union
American
A Bib Gourmand gastropub from the team behind Lardon next door, and it shows: the kitchen takes pub food seriously without getting precious about it. Edison bulbs, dark wood, booths, and regulars who've basically claimed their barstools. The menu leans comfort but keeps things interesting, and the craft beer list pulls from local breweries. Every table orders a cheeseburger, and nobody leaves annoyed about it.
-
Rank 99. Chilam Balam
Modern Mexican
A Bib Gourmand modern Mexican small-plates spot tucked below street level in Lakeview, Chilam Balam draws the kind of crowd that actually reads the menu before ordering. The rotating plates are clever without being annoying about it, and the staff will talk you through all of it. No reservations means a wait, but regulars treat that as part of the deal.
-
Rank 100. Sochi
Modern Vietnamese
Modern Vietnamese done with real care, Sochi is a bright, welcoming spot on Belmont where the cooking carries genuine depth without asking you to dress up for it. The menu leans into bold flavors and thoughtful sourcing, and the pho alone makes the trip worthwhile. It's earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which means the value is as good as the food. Neighborhood couples and regulars fill the room on weeknights, and they're not wrong to come back.
