The Best Places to Eat and Stay in France

  1. Rank 3063. La Table du Royal

    Mediterranean

The terrace at La Table du Royal looks out over the Baie des Fourmis, fringed with greenery and arranged as though the Riviera has never heard of a bad afternoon. This is the hotel restaurant of the Royal Riviera, and the kitchen leans into the geography, sourcing gamberoni from San Remo and fish from small local boats. The citrus dessert with honey vinaigrette has developed something of a following, which on the Côte d'Azur takes some doing.

  4. Rank 3063. La Table du Ventoux

    Provence Mediterranean

The terrace looks straight out at Mont Ventoux, which sets the tone for a hotel restaurant that leans hard into its Provençal address. Lunch runs casual and shareable, with Mediterranean flavors doing the work. Evenings shift into something more composed, with turbot, foie gras, and local poultry poached with seaweed. The team is attentive in that way that never tips into theater, which, at a luxury hotel, is its own small achievement.

  11. Behind a deep-blue façade near the center of Brest, this small contemporary bistro keeps things refreshingly unshowy. The local chef trained in the city and stayed, which tells you something about the food: traditional French cooking done with a clear head, good ingredients, and no detours through nostalgia. Lunch runs to a tight, sensible set menu; evenings stretch a little further.

  13. A Spanish charcoal oven anchors the open kitchen of this terrace restaurant in Parc de Clairfont, turning out grilled fish and meat over open flame while shade sails and wooden decking give the whole thing a proper guinguette feel. Vegetables, herbs, oil, and honey come from the restaurant's own gardens, and the wine list runs organic and natural. It shares a kitchen philosophy with La Galinette in Perpignan, only here you're eating outside in a small town known for its red onion.

  14. Rank 3063. La Terrasse des Cigales

    Provençal Mediterranean

Tucked between the Durance River and the Luberon, this Provençal restaurant earns its name with a shaded terrace backed by actual cicada noise, which is either atmospheric or a lot depending on your tolerance. The kitchen keeps things regional and unfussy, sourcing lamb from the Alpilles and vegetables from the village, and switching to wood-fire cooking when the weather turns. The daily special leans generous.

  19. A 14th-century tower looms just outside the windows of this contemporary dining room in the heart of Sancerre wine country, where old beams and ornate mouldings share space with clean modern cooking. The kitchen leans on seasonal ingredients and keeps the menu brief and uncluttered. Dinner comes as a surprise tasting in a few formats, and there's a fully vegetarian option too, which feels quietly radical for a French village this proud of its terroir.

It's a proper sit-down lunch spot in the Gascon countryside, where the kitchen runs a short, sensibly priced menu that leans modern without losing the thread of classical French cooking. The front-of-house team is the kind that makes you feel like a regular on the first visit.

This relaxed modern bistro in Montreuil fills a big, mismatched room of vintage furniture, old floorboards, and a fireplace, with an old piano lurking next door. 34. The menu at this modern bistro in Nantes changes daily, built around whatever the market had that morning. The room is light and airy inside an old stone building near the city centre, and the cooking is precise without being fussy, the kind of place where the vegetable dishes are the ones you remember. Service moves at a good clip, which you appreciate once the food starts arriving.

  35. Rank 3063. Langosteria

    Seafood Italian

On the seventh floor of La Samaritaine, this Milan-born seafood restaurant brings its signature Italian coastal cooking to a room where the Seine view does half the work. Refined crudos and pasta built around sea urchin and line-caught fish anchor a menu that takes the ocean seriously. The crowd arrives dressed for the occasion, which at Cheval Blanc means arriving dressed.

  37. Rank 3063. LAVA

    Modern French

Fire is the organizing principle at this modern bistro on the Left Bank, where the chef built the whole menu around flames and hot coals. The cooking pulls French produce into contact with spices gathered on extensive travels, and the results are vivid and a little restless in the best sense. The sommelier co-founded the place, so the wine list gets real attention. Small, personal, and exactly as lively as the name suggests.

The sandy cove of Plage de la Birochère sits right outside the window, rocks and all, which makes the room feel less like a dining room and more like a very comfortable excuse to stare at the sea. This modern restaurant in Pornic runs on a tight team: the chef handles precise, terroir-driven cooking while his wife, a sommelier and oenologist, steers a wine list weighted toward biodynamic bottles. Service is relaxed and unpretentious throughout.

  50. The name comes from the ouvrée, the 428 square meters of Burgundy vineyard a single worker could tend in a day, and the restaurant leans into that specificity at every turn. It's a modern dining room inside a small hotel in Savigny-lès-Beaune, where the wines are local, the tableware is handmade, and the chef builds a clean, produce-led menu that doesn't need to shout about the terroir because the terroir is already doing the talking.

  51. Rank 3063. Le 49R

    Modern French

A 17th-century mansion on rue Royale, with restored hardwood floors and ornate mouldings softened by contemporary furniture, is a quietly ambitious setting for a fine dining room. The terrace out back is shaded and calm, which is a nice trick for a city-center address. Classic French technique drives the kitchen, and the cellar runs to several hundred wines plus a serious collection of Chartreuse, if you feel like going somewhere after dessert.

A former pastry shop on a drowsy village square in the shade of a church, now a bright, wood-lined conservatory serving modern French cooking tied tightly to local producers. The menu is short and seasonal, built around relationships with small growers rather than a printed manifesto. The Michelin Guide has it on their list, which tracks: this is the kind of quiet, confident cooking that travels well.

  56. Rank 3063. Le 703

    Bistro

A long counter runs the room at this snug bistro in the 17th, where the menu rotates between Alsace in the colder months and Provence when the weather turns. The chef trained under some serious names in both regions, and the pâté en croûte and house-made boudin taste like proof of that. Traditional French cooking done without apology, in a room where the regulars seem to have memorized the entire thing.

  58. Tables at this Krutenau bistrot are famously hard to come by, which tells you something before you've even looked at the menu. Lunch runs as a set menu, evenings go a bit more ambitious, and the cooking leans into a quiet eclecticism that slides toward fusion without making a production of it. The dishes are fresh and sharp, the room is friendly, and the philosophers it's named for would probably have stayed for dessert.

The rum baba never leaves the menu at this light-filled modern bistro in central Montpellier, though it shows up in different guises depending on the week. Emerald walls, crystal chandeliers, and exposed stone pillars set the mood at this glamorous little bistro tucked next to its Michelin-starred sibling JAN. The menu runs classic French, sole meunière and tarte Tatin, but chef Jan Hendrik, who grew up in South Africa, quietly folds in lentil bobotie and malva pudding alongside vanilla ice cream, which gives the whole thing a cosmopolitan undercurrent that the room, for all its Niçois polish, wears surprisingly lightly.

    Contemporary French

The building used to be a train station, and the team has kept every bit of it: brick arches, green shutters the exact shade of old SNCF rolling stock, terracotta tiles, and 1970s wallpaper that somehow works. It's a proper bistro, the kind where seasonal market cooking shows up as colourful, unfussy plates at prices that make you order dessert without thinking twice. A young couple run it, one out front and one in the kitchen, which tends to mean everyone cares more.

A seafood restaurant on the old port in Golfe-Juan where the chef weaves Asian technique through Mediterranean catch, and the result is less bouillabaisse-and-rosé and more fermented-fish soy with dentex tartare. 99. The name nods to the birch forests of the Sologne, and the kitchen follows the same logic: Chambord asparagus, freshwater pike, local game in season. This contemporary bistro in Romorantin has varnished wooden tables, warm filament bulbs, and a chef who trained at Georges Blanc before coming home to cook his own backyard. The Loire wine list keeps pace. Classical French technique, very regional ingredients, and a room that feels dressed up without being stiff.

Tucked behind Saint-Sulpice on a quiet Left Bank street, this old bougnat turned neighborhood bistro has the tiled floors and scuffed banquettes to prove it. Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
