A panoramic window faces the mouth of the Tagus, which makes a strong case for the upstairs dining room, though the four-seat kitchen counter downstairs puts you inside the creative process instead. This modern tasting-menu restaurant in Paço de Arcos runs two seasonal menus, a shorter lunch option and a longer one that stretches to twelve courses, built around international influences with a particular fondness for Southeast Asia.

Japanese
A tiny omakase spot in the unhurried Bonfim neighbourhood, where twelve diners at most sit down to a daily-changing chef's menu built around regional fish, much of it sourced from the Matosinhos market. The chef travels to Japan regularly and keeps the cooking purist, with a light contemporary edge. Surrender to whatever is on tonight, because there is no alternative, which turns out to be the whole point.

Seafood
A U-shaped counter for ten people wrapping an open kitchen is the whole room here, tucked beneath another restaurant inside a hotel on Avenida da Liberdade. The chef runs a single tasting menu built around Atlantic fish and seafood, with caviar and truffle showing up when the mood calls for it. You pass through an entrance bar lined with over a thousand mirrors on the way in, which sets the tone neatly.

Portuguese
Candlelight and tasting menus in a cosy bistro tucked away from Porto's centre, named for the chef's daughter. The kitchen pulls together Mozambican, Portuguese, and French threads into a single menu that shifts with the seasons, and the cooking has the kind of quiet technical confidence that doesn't need to announce itself. A small room, an unhurried pace, and a menu that ends with Azorean pineapple and São Jorge cheese.

Bairrada Portuguese
Bairrada-style suckling pig is the draw at this regional restaurant near National Road 13 in Póvoa de Varzim, a long way from the dish's central-Portugal heartland but seemingly undeterred by that. The signature roast arrives with crackling skin, wafer-thin chips, salad, and the house leitão sauce. Salt cod, duck rice, and a suckling-pig bean stew fill out a menu that doesn't stray far from the classics. Spacious, light-filled rooms and a well-stocked wine cellar complete the picture.

Portuguese Seafood
A wooden sculpture of a giant ray hangs over the dining room, which tells you everything about where José Avillez's most sea-forward restaurant wants your head to be. Perched between Guincho and Cascais with views to match, it's a seafood restaurant built around ultra-fresh fish displayed in an open kitchen. The menu leans into the Portuguese coast with the kind of confidence that doesn't need explaining.

Portuguese Seafood
The building is shaped like a boat, which feels either very on-brand or slightly too literal depending on your tolerance for themed architecture. Inside, this seafood restaurant spreads across two floors with nautical décor that stays on the tasteful side of maritime kitsch. A display of fresh fish and shellfish greets you at the door. The menu leans hard into the sea, with rice dishes, grilled fish, bacalhau, and a seafood açorda stew sharing space with a few solid meat options.

Omakase Japanese
Fourteen seats total, ten of them at the counter facing the kitchen, is the whole footprint of this omakase spot near Parque Eduardo VII. The chef builds the menu around fish from Setúbal, Nazareth, and the Azores, so the selection shifts with what those waters are doing. It's intimate in the way that means you will absolutely hear your neighbor's conversation, and they'll hear yours.

Portuguese
A residential address on the outskirts of Nogueira that you could easily mistake for a house, if not for the terrace and gardens out front. Inside, it's a proper sit-down restaurant serving traditional Minho cooking, the kind where certain dishes, roast cockerel, cozido, charcoal-grilled kid goat, need a 24-hour call ahead because they're built from scratch. Private rooms upstairs handle the celebrations.

Steakhouse
You walk through a working butcher's shop to reach the dining room, which tells you everything about the priorities here. It's a modern, informal grill restaurant in Lisbon where the meat arrives straight from the counter out front, covering serious territory: Uruguayan picanha, Galician dry-aged T-bone, A5 Kobe flank. You can also buy cuts to take home, which is a generous policy for anyone who can't let go.

Sushi
A ten-seat counter hidden behind an unmarked door in Lisbon, where the omakase format means everyone sits down together and nobody eats until the last person arrives, so respect the booking time. The wood-clad room is quiet and unhurried, the fish sometimes flown in from Japan, and the Edomae technique shapes small, careful bites that shift with whatever the season is actually offering that week.

Seafood
The nautical lines of this seafood restaurant on the Estrada do Guincho have been a fixture along the Guincho coast for as long as anyone can remember, all pale wood and light tones with the Atlantic close enough to justify everything on the menu. Fish and shellfish from the region are the whole point, and the wine cellar running beneath the building is quietly enormous. Sharing menus are available for two, though regulars tend to know the room well enough to order without looking.

Alentejo Portuguese
A U-shaped counter and a short menu of Alentejo cooking near the Museu Nacional dos Coches, which means you're sharing elbow room with people who came for royal carriages and stayed for duck rice. The room nods to the tradition of vinho da talha, the ancient clay-amphora wine of the region, and the chef works in plain sight, which at a place this small feels less like theater and more like watching a neighbor cook.

An open kitchen faces the square at one end of Praça da República, where the Ave river sets a backdrop that does most of the decorating. This casual modern restaurant is chef Paulo André's project, and the cooking leans hard on local vegetables, fish, and meat, with enough vegetarian options to make that explicit rather than incidental. When the sun cooperates, the terrace earns its place in the decision. Informal enough that nobody's keeping score on your outfit.

Pan-Asian
Dark-toned rooms, an open kitchen, and a counter for cocktails set the mood at this casual fusion restaurant near Praça Marquês de Pombal. The chef came home after years in international kitchens and brought the flavors with him, folding Asian technique into Central American instincts across a shareable à la carte menu or a few tasting menu formats. The soft shell crab taco with pineapple chutney and gochujang mayo earns every mention it gets.

The ground-floor entrance is separate from the grand 18th-century palace hotel above, which is either a design choice or a hint that the restaurant has its own story to tell. This is a contemporary Portuguese tasting-menu spot where the chef channels his Trás-os-Montes upbringing through regional flavors, cornbread, alheira, salt-cod, while keeping the whole coastline on the table too. A family recipe book three generations deep drives the menu at this cozy regional restaurant near the train station in Azambuja. Tasting menus built around the chef's childhood memories sound like a premise that could go either way, but here the conceit holds. Dark wooden beams, communal tables, and hand-painted whales on the wall set the tone at this Italian pizza restaurant at the edge of the Algarve. The naturally fermented dough bakes up light with a good crust, and the toppings split loyalties between Italian staples and local Algarve produce. Two wood-fired ovens anchor Mano a Mano, one for Roman-style, one for Neapolitan, and the kitchen treats the difference as a friendly argument worth having nightly. Herringbone floors, round marble tables, and Italian cinema posters give the room an easy elegance. The window at this Chiado corner pastry shop is a genuine problem for anyone trying to stay on schedule. Every tart and pastry inside follows recipes traced back to Cistercian monks, which explains why the menu reads like a theological argument: heaven's cheese, eggs of paradise, bacon from heaven. The sweets are egg-heavy and syrup-dark in the old Portuguese convent style, and the names alone are worth the detour.

The menu is handwritten on the facade, which tells you most of what you need to know. This is a no-frills Lisbon dining room where the chef, a veteran of cult favorite Boi-Cavalo, has set himself the unfashionable task of cooking actual Lisbon food: cod fritters, salt cod, steak with a fried egg. The flan comes with caramel lightly scented with orange blossom, a small detail that suggests someone in the kitchen is paying close attention.

Portuguese Sandwich Shop
A bifana is Lisbon's street-food baseline: thin pork shank fried in pork fat, stuffed into a crusty roll, finished with mustard from a squeeze bottle or a few drops of piri piri. This counter on the steep Rua da Madalena has been doing exactly that for decades, and the queue outside remains the only review that matters. Simple, cheap, and completely without pretension, which is probably why the line includes everyone.

Italian
A gastrobar where the cocktail list gets the same attention as the food, which is already saying something. The team behind Bar Imprensa brings Italian instincts to a Lisbon after-work room: small plates built around vegetables and seafood, natural wines, and pasta that earns its place rather than filling it. The vibe is deliberately unhurried, the kind of place where ordering another round feels like the obvious move.

Seafood
A seafood restaurant from Portuguese chef Leandro Carreira, whose career unfolded largely abroad before he brought this back home. The counter hums with the focus of a sushi bar, but the cooking goes somewhere else entirely: aged and fermented fish, lesser-seen species, a menu split between raw and cooked that treats the familiar Lisbon script of grilled fish or sashimi as a starting point rather than a ceiling.

Argentine Barbecue
An Argentinian parrilla in Porto's Baixa neighborhood, where the wood smoke from the grill does most of the talking. Chef Mauricio Ghiglione weaves in Portuguese ingredients, but the menu's center of gravity stays firmly South American: chorizo, rib-eye, empanadas, and a dulce de leche flan that makes a strong case for dessert. A sister spot sits on the sand at Praia da Aguda for anyone who wants Atlantic views with their grilled fish.

Nordic
A Swedish chef who fell hard for Lisbon opened this small sharing-plates restaurant in Madragoa, a traditional neighborhood quietly becoming a serious place to eat. Peter Nyström spent decades cooking Nordic food before ditching the rulebook entirely, and the menu shows it: big flavors, real spice, and a cheerful disregard for Scandinavian restraint. The tasting option is called No FOMO, which tells you roughly everything about the tone.

A modern vegetarian restaurant in Leça da Palmeira where the room, all wood, burnt cement, and marble, looks like someone actually thought it through. The chef reworks classic Portuguese dishes without meat, including a meatless take on caldeirada, the seafood stew that most Portuguese cooks would consider non-negotiable. Nothing goes to waste, stems and leaves included, which sounds like a manifesto but mostly just means the food is more interesting than you'd expect.

A tiny tasca in Ajuda where the walls belong to a Belém football club and the menu belongs to regulars who know exactly what they came for. The bitoque is the reason to show up: a fried steak with fries and a crispy egg, served on a stainless-steel tray with a garlicky pan sauce that makes no apologies. White tablecloths, dark wood, upholstered chairs: O Fernando looks exactly like the kind of traditional Portuguese restaurant where nothing needs to change. And mostly, nothing has. Heróis de França Street is essentially Portugal's charcoal-fish district, and this no-frills seafood restaurant has been drawing locals since back when dockworkers used to hop the wall from the harbor next door. The grill runs hot on cod and sea bass sourced from the fish auction up the road, and the caldeirada and octopus rice taste aggressively homemade, in the good way. Simple room, checked-out decor, zero pretension.

Traditional Japanese
The cultural through-line here is Brazil's deep love affair with Japanese food, expressed in one of Lisbon's more quietly interesting Japanese restaurants. Chef Lucas Azevedo, São Paulo-born and Lisbon-based for decades, leans toward the traditional end of the spectrum: think grilled rice balls, horse mackerel tartare, and chicken wing gyoza that regulars are already treating as the reason they booked.

A poster in the doorway reads "Fine dining is dead," which sets the tone nicely for a tasca that then serves beef tartare and gizzard tempura. This no-frills neighborhood spot in Mouraria is part of a new wave updating the traditional Portuguese tavern without making it precious about it. Sharing plates, affordable prices, and a dining room loud enough that you don't have to worry about what you're wearing.

Seasonal Portuguese
The handwritten menu changes weekly, listing whatever arrived fresh that morning, in the spirit of the traditional tasca this small room used to be. Peter Templeton, a British expat who fell for the neighborhood, runs an unfussy seasonal restaurant in Penha de França with 18 seats and prices that won't send you into quiet despair. It feels personal because it is, and booking ahead is less a suggestion than a necessity.

Patisserie
The carved wooden display cases and Art Nouveau bones give this grand Lisbon patisserie the feel of a Parisian café that decided to stay. It has been around forever, and the croquettes and pastry counter, heavy with cakes, meringues, and traditional Portuguese sweets, have outlasted most of what surrounds them. Lunch and dinner are on offer now, but most people come for something small on a plate and a reason to sit longer than they planned.

Portuguese
The space hosted a classic tasca for over 40 years before the current chef, who put in real time visiting traditional Portuguese eateries before opening her own, took it over. This is an Alvalade neighborhood tavern running daily specials, cod fritters, croquettes, and affordable tabs with zero fuss. In a city where neo-tascas are everywhere and half of them know it, this one seems to have forgotten to be smug about it.
