Pozole comes in red, green, and white here, and the red is the one to get: a steaming bowl big enough to require planning, with chunks of pork and hominy swimming in a broth that actually has some heat to it. Cabbage, avocado, and radish go in, lime and cilantro finish it off, and suddenly whatever was wrong with your day is negotiable. A casual pozoleria on East Van Buren that the Phoenix New Times named best pozole in the city.

Retrograde is a bright, clean coffee shop in City Heights, and by midmorning it fills with the laptop crowd, the same remote workers who lost their last roost when a beloved Nations spot closed. Tabla Rasa Cafe is a neighborhood spot on Greenwood Avenue, and its calling card is a sprinkle-and-peanut-brittle ice cream topping that Midwestern kids grew up shaking out of a Dairy Queen cup. Transplants who spent years hunting for it south of the Mason-Dixon line can now stop.
