The Best Places to Eat and Stay in the United States

Eat + Stay, change section
  1. A short walk from the Staten Island Ferry, this old-school steakhouse keeps the lights low, the wood dark, and the ambitions firmly on the plate. Dry-aged steaks anchor the menu, with oysters close behind. No spectacle, no trend-chasing, just that particular outer-borough calm that suggests the room has been quietly holding its ground for a very long time and sees no reason to stop.

  13. A block from the beach in Del Mar, Sbicca is a California casual restaurant with a sidewalk patio built for lingering over wine while the foot traffic does its thing. The menu runs from shishito peppers and Korean beef lettuce wraps to buttermilk fried chicken and herb-crusted halibut, the kind of range that keeps a table of four from arguing too long. Good for dinner before a walk down to the water.

  15. A casual American restaurant in downtown Apex where the menu quietly ignores the idea that Korean barbecue sauce and pulled pork shouldn't share a bowl. The burgers are the draw, but shrimp and grits with gochujang and cast iron skillet chicken keep things interesting. It gets busy, and the staff move tables along at a clip, so a short wait at the door usually resolves itself fast.

  28. Rank 15991. Sierra Nevada Taproom

    American Beer Bar

Sierra Nevada's East Coast brewery comes with a sprawling taproom where the beer list runs from flagship lagers to whatever they're playing with this season. The on-site garden supplies the kitchen, which does wood-fired pizza and duck-fat fries alongside the pints, but drinking is the point. Outside there's a patio with a fire pit, a bocce court, cornhole, and an amphitheater, which sounds like overkill until you're on your third flight.

  38. A neighborhood restaurant in Decatur where the menu drifts happily between lamb shepherd's pie, shrimp and grits, and a roster of signature burgers without feeling like it's having an identity crisis. Small plates and big entrées coexist, much of it gluten-free or adaptable. Craft cocktails, solid beer and wine, and a patio that pulls people into the kind of long, unhurried evening nobody planned to have.

  63. A Belgian bistro that takes the waffle seriously enough to turn it into a vehicle for a Hot Brown, which is either inspired or unsettling depending on your feelings about Kentucky. Waffles and galettes anchor the menu alongside steak frites and mussels, with an open kitchen and hardwood floors giving the room a casual, neighborhood feel. The s'mores waffle exists, and that seems like information worth having.

  64. Tables on a patio steps off the Brighton Beach boardwalk, with the Atlantic doing its thing just beyond. This sprawling Russian restaurant is modeled on the festive seaside dining culture of Odessa, which means the menu runs from smoked fish and shish kebab to foie gras, and the room is never quiet about it. The crowd brings its own occasion. The gratuity situation is explained on the bill, which is the kind of transparency you appreciate after the fact.

  72. The Argentine parrilla, a communal spread of grilled meats built for two or four, anchors this Latin American and Italian-influenced restaurant on Race Street. Small plates dominate the menu, which pushes sharing over soloing, and the short rib gnocchi has a way of making people forget they ordered it to split. Locally sourced ingredients throughout, with a crowd that seems to have read the room before arriving.

  73. Rank 15991. The Bywater

    Cajun & Creole

Zinc bar, pressed tin ceilings, and a shelf stacked with hot sauce bottles: The Bywater is a New Orleans-inspired Cajun and Creole restaurant in Los Gatos that commits to the bit. Zydeco on the stereo, gumbo on the stove. The chef behind this one is David Kinch, and regulars show up early enough to snag the andouille gumbo before it disappears. The Michelin Guide has handed it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks.

  76. The fireplace in the dining room does a lot of work here, and the room lets it. This is a sit-down seafood restaurant on the Gulf Coast with a Cajun-leaning menu, the kind of place where crab claws come sautéed or fried and the chef makes the desserts in-house, details worth confirming with your server. Sunday brunch draws a loyal crowd. When the weather cooperates, the veranda is the obvious call.

Mismatched chairs, flour-dusted pastry cases, and the low roar of Columbia students debating things that will not change the world: this cash-only cafe on Amsterdam Avenue has been doing its thing across from the Cathedral of St. John the Divine forever. The European pastries run from morning to close, the coffee is strong, and nobody is in any hurry for you to leave.

  94. The walls are buried in British memorabilia, which is either charming or a lot, depending on how you feel about commemorative royal plates. Either way, this is a proper English pub in Fullerton, the kind that's been around forever and makes fish and chips, bangers and mash, and homemade baked pies without apologizing for any of it. The fish and chips have a following. Scratch-made soups and desserts round things out.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
