  3. A slate of handwritten "picorages," the chef's word for snacks that are really not small, covers the counter of this buzzy wine bar and bistro in the 9th. The menu moves with the chef's mood, so veal sweetbreads one week, a Normandy rib of beef the next. The wine list keeps growing, which the regulars seem fine with. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of place that earns it without trying to look like it.

  5. Rank 777. Les Parisiens

    Brasserie French

Les Parisiens is a hotel brasserie in Saint-Germain, all velour banquettes and brass-edged mirrors, serving the sole meuniere and veal tartare you'd expect, at prices that suggest the sole had a good agent. It's a safe bet for parents, dates, or anyone you want to impress without scaring. The address is where James Joyce finished Ulysses, which gives literary types something to mention before the millefeuille arrives.

  6. Philippe Starck turned a former parking garage in the 20th into a hotel that feels like it was designed by a mischievous philosopher, which, partly, it was. Bare concrete gets offset by superhero-mask reading lamps and iMac-as-TV setups in rooms zoned as residences rather than hotel stays. You're deep past Père Lachaise, several minutes from the Metro, which concentrates your evenings around the bar and restaurant, both of which hold up.

    The awards

  7. Rank 777. Mokko

    Modern French

A former music industry guy opened this buzzy little bistro at the foot of Montmartre, which explains something about the room's energy without quite explaining what. The cooking is market-driven and unfussy, the kind where the chef seems to be having a good time rather than making a point. Lunch and dinner crowds pack in tight, and the place moves fast.

  8. The awards

  9. Rank 777. Oktobre

    Creative Pan-Asian

A creative restaurant on the Left Bank street where philosophers once argued, Oktobre brings a similar restlessness to the plate. The chef sources obsessively and cooks with a loose, confident hand, pulling in Asian spices and fermented flavors alongside French technique. Cuttlefish pasta, miso beurre blanc, sweetcorn curry: the combinations sound unlikely until they don't. The room is warm and the mood runs lively.

  11. Rank 777. Rosemarie

    Traditional French

The zinc-topped counter and egg mayonnaise on the menu tell you everything before you sit down. Rosemarie is a proper Paris bistro in the 7th, the kind where the cooking is seasonal and traditional and nobody is trying to reinvent anything. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks: the food is careful and the room feels lived-in without being shabby. Named, sweetly, after both owners' mothers.

  12. Rank 777. Rosette

    Lyonnaise Bistro

A Lyonnais bouchon reread for a Paris suburb: pressed-tin nostalgia meets well-chosen antiques and a counter facing the open kitchen. This small, relaxed bistro runs a tight no-options set menu that changes with the seasons and leans on organic vegetables from Essonne. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand. At lunch and dinner, you eat what the kitchen feels like cooking that day, which tends to concentrate everyone's attention rather nicely.

  13. Terra is a loft-style French restaurant in the Marais that feels more Brooklyn than the 3rd arrondissement, with a modern take on the old repertoire. The mains are built for two, so bring someone who'll let you do the ordering, ideally toward the Basque lamb that spends hours in the oven and ends up with crackling skin. The tiny starters are skippable in theory and a mistake in practice.

  14. The lofts here pack a sleeping area, a proper kitchen, a dining table, and a desk into a footprint that would make a Paris studio blush. Zoku is an apartment-style hotel that started in Amsterdam and landed in the 17th, inside a mixed-use building in Clichy-Batignolles, a neighborhood that is still, conspicuously, figuring itself out. The rooftop terrace grows produce for the restaurant below, which is either very charming or very on-brand, depending on your mood.

    The awards

  15. A private garden connects the two buildings of this boutique hotel in the 16th, which already tells you the pace you're in for. Floral prints, actual flowers, and a charmingly unhurried atmosphere fill both houses, Maison Molitor and Maison Boileau. Comforts are thoughtful rather than lavish. Breakfast arrives in the dining room or picnic-style in the garden, and the Bois de Boulogne is a short walk when the greenery still isn't enough.

  16. The awards

  17. The 15th is the kind of arrondissement that Parisians live in but tourists skip, which is precisely why the nightly rates here don't sting. Hôtel Clarisse is a boutique hotel with an industrial-salvage aesthetic that reads more London than Paris, navy-and-white rooms with mosaic tile bathrooms, and easy access to Parc Georges-Brassens. Triple and quad rooms make it genuinely practical for families or groups who'd rather not book two of everything.

    The awards

  18. Star Wars masks on the walls and a complimentary bag of gummy bears on the pillow set the tone at this design hotel near the Porte de Versailles expo grounds. Concrete walls meet psychedelic carpets and velvet cushions, the rooftop bar has DJs on weekends, and there's an indoor basketball court for when sightseeing loses its appeal. You're on the edge of the city, but breakfast on the terrace comes with a skyline view most central hotels can't match.

    The awards

  19. Philippe Starck designed the interiors, Jean Nouvel built the tower, and somewhere between the two of them a hotel landed on top of a skyscraper on Paris's southern edge with views straight to the Eiffel Tower. The 13th arrondissement is not where anyone expects a rooftop spa and open-air Jacuzzi, which is somewhat the point. A panoramic restaurant and a roof terrace cocktail bar mean you can watch the city from several altitudes without ever leaving the building.

    The awards

  20. Rank 820. 114 Faubourg

    Parisian Brasserie

    The awards

  21. The walls here are so stuffed with memorabilia that a grinning Barack Obama watches you eat your burger. Ferdi is a snug brasserie near the Tuileries with an improbably eclectic menu, jumping from Greek sharing plates to Venezuelan tapas to ceviche, all under one knick-knack-crowded roof. Kim Kardashian is a regular, which tells you something about the burgers. End with the churros and hot chocolate, which is non-negotiable.

    The awards

  22. A modernist chandelier fit for a Sun King hangs over the emerald-and-gold lobby bar, which sets the tone for this boutique hotel a ten-minute walk from Versailles. The 19th-century facade gives way to parquet floors and trompe l'oeil ceilings, and the restaurant, Alcôve, runs modern French rather than period pastiche. Small enough to feel intimate, central enough to make the palace an afterthought.

    The awards

  23. Rank 820. Le Rigmarole

    Japanese Barbecue

The menu at this intimate counter restaurant lists dishes as single words, "thigh", "oyster", "meatball", and the descriptions only get more opaque from there. What arrives, cooked over Japanese binchotan charcoal and served across a walnut counter under vintage Tiffany lamps, is nothing like the word suggests. It reads as a playful antidote to stiff Parisian fine dining, while remaining, unmistakably, fine dining.

    The awards

  24. The wood paneling and black awning on the Quai Voltaire hide a brasserie that has been feeding Paris's creative and moneyed set for well over a century, in the building where Voltaire himself once lived. The menu runs to classic French comfort: the kind of food that makes no apology for butter. Reservations fill with editors, gallerists, and politicians who all pretend not to notice each other.

  25. Rank 825. Bobby

    Pizzeria

A pizza spot near Montmartre where the menu is short by design and the dough is the argument. Bobby keeps things bright and unfussy, the kind of place that earns its following by not trying to be everything at once. A tight selection of beers and a concise wine list round things out, and a few traditional dishes pull in regulars who'd never dream of ordering the pizza.

    Italian Coffee Shop

Tucked into the Passage des Panoramas, this Italian café and restaurant from the Alajmo family occupies a former engraving studio whose gilded interiors the family wisely left alone. Coffee comes as it would in Venice, pastries and charcuterie boards fill the afternoon hours, and the kitchen runs a proper à la carte alongside a tasting menu built around seasonal Italian produce. The desserts have a way of making the detour feel inevitable.

  27. Rank 827. 19.20 by Norbert Tarayre

    Traditional French

The dessert trolley is the tell: this is a restaurant that has decided luxury hotel dining should feel like Sunday lunch at a well-traveled aunt's house. Norbert Tarayre, the chef France met on Top Chef, runs the kitchen inside the Prince de Galles on Avenue George-V, turning out leeks vinaigrette, celeriac remoulade, and pommes Anna with pork shoulder, the kind of regional French cooking that Paris hotels usually consider beneath them.

A light-filled porch and pale wood set the mood at this small bistronomy in the 7th, where the evening runs on a single set menu and the lunch board changes with what's good that week. The chef reworks classic French fare with a light hand, folding in vegetarian options and leaning on local produce. It's the kind of neighborhood spot that makes you wish you lived around the corner.

  32. Rank 827. Akabeko

    Japanese

A downstairs counter and a quietly romantic room upstairs give this Japanese-French fusion restaurant two very different moods under one roof. The chef runs an omakase menu, so you show up and trust the kitchen, which draws on Japanese technique and a clear affection for French classics. Foie gras with teriyaki sauce gives you the general idea. The team takes the hospitality side seriously, in the way that makes you notice it without being sure why.

  33. Rank 827. Akira Back Paris

    Fusion Japanese

The Art Deco light fixtures cast the kind of flattering glow that makes everyone look like they have their life together. This Japanese fusion restaurant inside the Prince de Galles is the first European outpost of Akira Back, the former pro snowboarder turned chef who came up under Nobu Matsuhisa. The menu blends Korean and Japanese influences, the marble counter anchors an open kitchen, and the AB Tuna Pizza has become something of a calling card.

    The awards

  34. Rank 827. Albufera

    Portuguese Mediterranean

Portuguese music plays in the dining room, which tells you roughly everything about this French bistro in Boulogne-Billancourt. The menu leans Mediterranean with a Portuguese soul, so expect sardines, cockles, piquillo peppers, and the kind of pork dish that finishes with good cooking juices and a scattering of chives. Simple room, warm welcome, and a caramelised lemon cream at the end that does not overexplain itself.

This modern bistro on the Cherche-Midi shifts registers through the day, from a well-priced lunch to a more serious evening menu. The chef François Gagnaire essentially runs a love letter to his home region out of a Left Bank address, which is a quietly winning idea.

  38. Rank 827. Argile

    Modern French

Red tile floors, brick walls, and a glass-fronted façade near Gare Saint-Lazare set the scene at this snug modern bistro in the 9th. The chef plates market-driven French cooking with real conviction, the kind that makes you forget to put your fork down. Natural wines, relaxed service, and a lunch menu that feels like a throwback to when this city fed people properly without making them feel it.

    The awards

  39. The chef traded spreadsheets for Ferrandi, then a stint at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, before landing here in the 9th. ASPIC is an intimate creative tasting-menu restaurant with an open kitchen and a vintage room that feels more like someone's well-curated dining room than a destination. The surprise set menu changes with the chef's sourcing: small-boat fish, free-range birds, local citrus and herbs. No choices, no à la carte, no negotiating with the menu.

  45. Rank 827. Aux Lyonnais

    Lyonnaise Bistro

Floral tiling, red leather booths worn to a warm patina, and flea-market curios on every surface set the scene at this old-school Lyonnaise bouchon transplanted to the second arrondissement. Alain Ducasse has had the keys for a while now, but the kitchen stays honest to the classic fare that made Lyon's canteen tradition worth stealing in the first place. Modern French

The red frontage on rue du Dragon belongs to a bistro run by a Japanese chef who trained at Georges Blanc and calls his cooking "semi-gourmet," which is either modesty or a trap. The food is French in bones and Japanese in precision, with sauces that take longer to make than most places take to plate the whole dish. The wine-by-the-glass list is quietly serious, and the staff actually know why.

  49. A Pigalle bistro where the menu moves freely between classic and modern French without apologizing for either. The chef's cooking is rooted in the land, so the produce does the heavy lifting: duck, foie gras, and pâté en croûte sit alongside guinea fowl with aubergine and cherries in red wine vinegar. Lunch is an affordable set menu; evenings open into tasting menus and à la carte. Neighborhood tables, unfussy room, serious cooking.

Kushikatsu is the Osaka street-food tradition of breaded, deep-fried skewers, and this small spot on rue Jean-Pierre-Timbaud takes it seriously. The format is simple, the execution less so: foie gras flambéed in Japanese whisky turns up alongside wagyu beef and shiitake stuffed with ginger chicken. 73. Rank 827. Clos d'Astorg

    Traditional French

The words "cuisine au beurre" painted right on the façade make the kitchen's priorities clear before you've touched the door. This is a Paris bistro of the old-school persuasion: mosaic floors, stone walls, white tablecloths, and a menu built around leek vinaigrette, onglet, and boudin noir. The stuffed cabbage is the house signature, a properly generous thing wrapped in a pale green leaf.

  77. Rank 827. Coretta

    Mexican-influenced Bistro

The treetop views over Martin Luther King park set the mood before the food arrives. Coretta is a casual modern restaurant in the Clichy-Batignolles district, named for Coretta Scott King, where the kitchen lands somewhere between Parisian bistronomy and Mexican flair, with edible flowers and sprouts adding color to plates built from local ingredients. The oak-lined room feels relaxed enough that nobody's performing, which in Paris is its own achievement.

  78. Rank 827. Dame

    Bistro

The 1970s pop decor and vinyl soundtrack set the mood before the food even arrives at this lively Pigalle bistro. Dishes come in flexible portions, the idea being that you order a few and share, or don't, depending on your mood and company. The wine list runs to 150 labels and the service stays resolutely unbuttoned. A Michelin Selected Restaurant where the room tends to be loud in the best way by eight.

  79. Rank 827. Dame Augustine

    Modern French

A veranda-style dining room with the feel of a neighbourhood brasserie, Dame Augustine is the more relaxed sibling project of a Paris chef with a deft hand for unexpected pairings. Set menus keep things approachable, including a lunch deal that the 13th arrondissement has quietly taken to heart. The cooking moves between earthy and bright, with combinations that surprise without performing. Casual enough for a weeknight, considered enough that you'll actually think about it afterward.

    Seafood

Oysters and whole fish have been the point here since forever, and the Rostang family has kept the white tablecloth seafood brasserie formula running without apology. Bouillabaisse, cod aioli, and shellfish towers anchor a menu that reads like a love letter to the French coast. The room on Place du Maréchal-Juin feels properly Parisian, the kind of elegant but unstuffy that takes years to calibrate. Finish with the chocolate soufflé.

  84. Rank 827. Drouant

    French

The Goncourt Prize jury has handed down its verdict in this room every year for over a century, which makes Drouant one of the more consequential dining rooms in French letters. It's a plush, old-school brasserie on place Gaillon, the kind where vol-au-vent and sole meunière feel completely correct. The chef trained under Yannick Alléno, and the wine cellar runs to nearly 2,000 bottles, with a generous pour-by-the-glass selection.

  86. The open kitchen anchors a spare, elegant dining room near Montparnasse, white tablecloths against pale wood, nothing fussy. Two veterans of L'Arpège run the room together, one cooking, one hosting, and the food follows the same logic as the decor: seasonal, precise, and without a wasted move. It's a tasting menu restaurant that earns its quiet confidence through restraint rather than spectacle.

  87. Rank 827. Edith

    Traditional French

Herringbone floors, green velvet, and striped wallpaper in a hotel dining room a block from the Champs-Élysées, priced like the arrondissement forgot to check its own zip code. Edith is a traditional French restaurant doing asparagus mimosa and roast chicken with the kind of quiet confidence that doesn't need to announce itself. Short menu at lunch, a little more room to roam at dinner, and service that actually moves.

  90. Rank 827. Elsass

    Modern Alsatian

A former garage on Avenue Parmentier, now a clean-lined loft with counter seats and an open kitchen, where every bottle on the wine list comes from Alsace. This small restaurant rethinks the region without the rustic props: sauerkraut turns up in crispy cromesquis or alongside house-made boudin blanc, and the whole menu exists to show off those wines. A lawyer opened it, which explains a certain precision to how the argument is laid out.

  91. Parked across from Les Deux Magots on Saint-Germain, this ground-floor Italian brasserie runs at a pace that feels more Milan than Paris, which the regulars seem to appreciate. The team moves fast, the menu holds every canonical Italian classic you'd want, and the kitchen executes them without flourish or apology. Good linguine alle vongole, proper tiramisu, the kind of place where the food does exactly what it promises.

    Japanese

The name unpacks as water, rice, and men, which tells you something about how seriously this Franco-Japanese restaurant takes its sake list before you've even sat down. It shares a building with the Houses of Sake and Whisky, and the counter overlooks an open kitchen where the chef works a menu that drifts between Paris and Osaka without settling for either. The desserts alone attract their own quiet following.

  97. The menu is a chalkboard, the room is no-frills, and the Cantonese cooking is the whole point. This small dinner-only spot in the 16th sources Cotentin blue lobster and line-caught sea bass for dishes that taste like someone actually cares where things come from. The dim sum are made with real care. At lunch, the team runs a fusion street food operation at a nearby address, but evenings here are a different, quieter proposition.

    Modern Italian

Red oak panelling and 1960s vintage furniture set the room at this French-Italian bistro in the 9th, where the menu is short, seasonal, and quietly confident. The kitchen layers Italian instincts onto French technique, with house-made pasta and produce sourced with obvious care. It reads like a neighborhood place until the food arrives and suggests someone back there takes this rather seriously.

Burnt leeks with lardo and vermouth dressing is the kind of dish that sounds like it shouldn't work until it does. This farm-to-table bistro on the Mouffetard sits in a Scandinavian-leaning room with a warm, buzzy feel that the street itself seems to encourage. The menu leans seasonal and quietly plant-forward, though evenings make room for a sharing tomahawk. Wines are sensibly priced, which on this street passes for a small miracle.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
