Cuisines

  1. A converted church on Zwolle's Bethlehems Kerkplein sets the scene for this French restaurant that doubles, comfortably, as a wine bar. The hostess runs the floor and the wine list with equal ease, and the chef keeps plates spare and sharp, a few well-chosen elements doing the arguing. You can drop in for a glass and something small, or commit to the full menu. Either way, nobody makes you feel like you chose wrong.

  2. Wine crates line the walls of this cosy French restaurant just outside the Breda city centre, a hint that the kitchen and the cellar are given equal reverence here. The à la carte menu runs from classics like oeuf en gelée to vegetarian plates and the odd Asian detour, with some dishes finished tableside. Sauces are where the chef shows off, and the wine list rewards a careful read before you order anything else.

  3. The terrace looks straight onto the Grote Kerk, which is either very romantic or a lot of Gothic stonework to process over dinner. Inside, the French restaurant keeps things sleek, with an à la carte and a tasting menu that lean toward bold pairings, fish sharpened with pickled cucumber and jalapeño, tartare reworked in ways the kitchen clearly enjoys. The chef has the technique to pull it off without things going sideways. Open seven days a week, which Haarlem quietly appreciates.

  4. Perched on the sixth floor of Depot Boijmans, this dinner restaurant sits inside a rooftop garden with Rotterdam spread out below it. Evenings bring a chef's surprise menu that leans hard into vegetables and combinations that shouldn't work but do. Afternoons are reserved for museum visitors, so the evening crowd gets the place to themselves, which feels like the better half of the deal.

  5. Rank 177. Restaurant Rootsch

    Modern French

Sitting on Zierikzee's old harbour inside the boutique Hotel Mondragon, Restaurant Rootsch does modern French cooking with a firm Zeeland accent, meaning the sea is never far from the plate. The chef keeps things unfussy, letting the local ingredients carry the weight rather than burying them in technique. A Michelin Selected restaurant that feels as polished as its setting, without the stiffness that sometimes comes with it.

  6. Rank 177. Restaurant Suzie's en Van Aken

    Asian-influenced French

A beurre blanc built on dashi stock tells you something about how the kitchen thinks: classically trained, but restless. This cosy neighbourhood restaurant in Oegstgeest runs on nose-to-tail instincts and a pantry shaped by the chef's travels through Asia. Out front, Suzanne steers guests through the wine list and desserts with the kind of ease that makes the whole room feel like it's running on good faith. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

  7. A piccalilli sorbet paying homage to a grandfather's pickle company is a strong opening move, and it sets the tone for what follows at this polished French restaurant on the outskirts of Breda. The dining room is warm and quietly stylish, the kind of place where the wine list earns its own conversation. Lunch is available too, which the crowd treats as a genuine occasion rather than an afterthought.

  8. Rank 177. Restaurant Vannu

    Modern European

A farm-driven, plant-based restaurant outside Bavel where the chef runs a multi-course set menu built on fermentation, pickling, and zero-waste thinking. Seaweed nudges beetroot somewhere more interesting; millet polenta cake gets tied together by a chanterelle sauce that does more work than it has any right to. Natural wines and house juices keep pace with the ethos. The Michelin Guide has it selected, and the cooking has the confidence to back that up quietly.

  9. Rank 177. Restobar de Woage

    Modern French

A restobar tucked into a charming old building on Meiboomplein, where the menu runs long enough that you'll have opinions before you've ordered. The kitchen leans French but isn't precious about it, grilling entrecôte to medium-rare and finishing it with a stroganoff sauce spiked with smoked sausage. The tiramisu reportedly demands the last spoonful. Comfortable, crowd-pleasing, and selected by the Michelin Guide.

  10. Rank 177. Restobar Vista

    Mediterranean French

The De Rotterdam building puts this French restaurant right on the Nieuwe Maas, and the skyline view through the windows is the kind that makes you order another glass just to keep looking. The menu leans classically French with a Mediterranean drift, the cooking straightforwardly unfussy rather than showy. The Michelin Guide has it listed, and the portions and pricing are calibrated to make you feel the city is doing you a favor.

  11. Rank 177. Reverie

    French

A lone bonsai tree anchors the middle of the dining room, setting the tone for what follows: a sleek, minimalist restaurant where French technique quietly flirts with Indonesian and broader Asian flavors. The two chef-owners met at hotel school and have been building toward this together ever since. Order à la carte if you want the Indonesian influences to shine; the set menu leans more contemporary. The Michelin Guide has it listed among its selected restaurants.

  12. The name means "poppy" in Zeelandic, which sets the tone for a place that's rooted in its corner of the Netherlands without being precious about it. Ferdy and Noëmie run the whole show themselves inside a centuries-old building, cooking farm-to-table dinners where classical pairings get loosened up just enough. Fish dishes and delicate sauces are where the kitchen lingers longest. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

  13. Naomi and Joey run this cozy casual fine dining spot in Roermond on a set menu format, with separate vegetarian and meat-and-fish options. The chef pulls from flavors across Asia and beyond, building rich sauces around vegetables that anchor almost every plate. The Michelin Guide has selected it, and the Lekker 500 lists it too. Small room, unhurried pace, and the kind of cooking that makes you suspect more thought went in than the relaxed room lets on.

  14. The menu here is largely decided by a sustainable fisherman from Urk, whose daily catch shapes what lands on the plate. This seafood restaurant on Zwolle's main square has the feel of a fisherman's hut that got a thoughtful renovation. Vegetables come from the team's own garden, sauces run deep, and fish trimmings get turned into soup rather than the bin. Lunch is à la carte; evenings are set menu only.

  15. Rank 177. Senses

    Japanese

Potato spaghetti with autumn truffle and katsuobushi, pulled together with a maitake mushroom cream, sets the tone for what this hotel restaurant is doing: Asian-inflected cooking where vegetables do most of the interesting work. The space leans lounge-y and deliberately stylish, the chefs come out to deliver dishes themselves, and the wine list is longer and more considered than the room would have you expect.

  16. Rank 177. Sequenza

    French

A multi-course French restaurant in The Hague where the kitchen blends classical technique with occasional Asian inflections and a menu that rotates with the seasons. The set menu format keeps things focused, and the cooking leans into precise, layered flavors rather than spectacle. The Michelin Guide has it listed, and a loyal crowd of regulars has quietly made it one of the city's reliable dinner destinations.

  17. Rank 177. Sinck

    Modern French

  18. Rank 177. Spoon Restaurant

    Classical French

A former bank on the Maasplein, all high ceilings and quiet grandeur, now housing a French-leaning contemporary restaurant where the chef arrives at your table with a selection of dessert spoons to choose from, which tells you something about the mood in the kitchen. The cooking is precise and confident, classical technique with the occasional exotic detour, and the old-world wine list is worth a conversation with the sommelier.

  19. Rank 177. Sukade

    Pan-Asian

A monumental 1860s warehouse on the Stoombootkade, where exotic goods including candied citrus peel once changed hands, now hosts a restaurant leaning into Asian-inflected contemporary cooking. The chef puts vegetables and fruit at the center of the plate in ways that feel considered rather than compensatory. Lunch runs simpler, evenings more elaborate, and the waterfront terrace earns its own argument for timing your visit around the weather.

  20. A seventeenth-century warehouse on the Rodetorenplein, now dressed in spare Scandinavian lines, houses this Dutch restaurant where the cooking leans heavily on seasonal, regional vegetables with just enough international edge to keep things interesting. The summer terrace offers cover from the city centre's noise. The chef plays with acidic and bitter notes in a way that feels considered rather than showy, and the Michelin Guide has taken notice.

  21. Rank 177. Tannay

    Classic French

A corner building on Realeneiland with a waterfront terrace that makes the rest of Amsterdam feel like the wrong choice. This is a classic French restaurant run by a chef whose parents own a vineyard in his hometown of Tannay, so the wine list has a personal footnote most places can't claim. The cooking leans into hare à la royale and duck in puff pastry, the kind of dishes that don't need reinventing, just someone who knows them cold.

  22. A terrace-fronted French restaurant in a small Gelderland town, named for the chef's aunt whose recipes quietly anchor the surprise tasting menu. The cooking is contemporary, pulling warmth and brightness from curry, lemongrass, and spice without losing its French footing. A vegetarian version runs alongside. The wine list is well chosen, and the staff actually know it, which in a town this size feels like its own small miracle.

  23. Small boats tie up right outside while you eat, which sets the tone for a meal at Tante Kee. It's a restaurant on a small island you reach by ferry, and the terrace hangs close enough to the water that the whole thing feels slightly too good to be real. The kitchen runs a contemporary European menu with quiet Asian inflections, listed in the Michelin Guide. Service is the kind that moves without being noticed.

  24. Rank 177. The Bishop

    Indonesian

Old wooden beams meet a lively, trend-conscious room in this Leiden restaurant where the chef weaves Indonesian heritage and global borrowings into a compact menu. Rendang gets serundeng and warm spice, veal tartare picks up kimchi and gochujang, and the wine list holds its own against any of it. Order à la carte or hand yourself over to the surprise menu and see what happens. Book ahead.

  25. Rank 177. The Church

    Modern French

A converted Lutheran church where the stained-glass windows and old pews stayed, and an open kitchen moved in. Hotel rooms float overhead in glass cubes, and surreal murals fill the gaps between sacred and strange. The chef builds a modern tasting menu on French foundations with a lean toward seafood, the kind of cooking that's precise without announcing it. The Michelin Guide has it on their list.

  26. Rank 177. THE DUCHESS

    Mediterranean

Stained-glass windows, antique clocks, and chandeliers that once watched over a bank's waiting room now preside over a very good dinner. The Duchess is an upscale brasserie with a Belle Époque soul, serving a broad Mediterranean menu that leans into southern France and Italy. Portions are generous and unfussy, the kind of place where beef Wellington and cacio e pepe coexist without anyone finding that strange. Weekend afternoon tea draws a dressed-up crowd.

  27. Rank 177. Tollius

    Italian twist French

Burgundy and white walls hung with contemporary art set the tone at this sleek Dutch restaurant, where the cooking moves between hearty French classics and sharp modern detours. A pithivier filled with quail, foie gras, and morels anchors one end; a wasabi-and-lemon-gel dessert lands at the other. The wine list is long enough to suggest the team has opinions. It's in the Michelin Guide, which fits the room.

  29. Tres lives in a cellar, which sets the tone before you've touched a plate. It's an intimate counter-dining restaurant in Rotterdam where a self-taught chef works through ferments, garums, and long maturations with the focused calm of someone who finds this genuinely relaxing. Ingredients come almost entirely from within 30 kilometres, and nothing goes to waste. The Michelin Guide has it selected, and the room rewards the kind of eater who leans forward when the explanation starts.

  30. Rank 177. Troef

    Modern French

A buzzy French bistro where the bar seats fill up fast and the kitchen is worth watching from them. The menu is à la carte, the wine list gives you plenty to argue over, and the chef runs the room with a loose-limbed enthusiasm that somehow spreads to everyone in it. French classics show up with the occasional left-field twist, creative enough to be interesting without announcing themselves as such.

  31. Rank 177. Vanille

    Mediterranean French

The period tiled floor has been here long enough that it practically anchors the room, and the rest of Vanille follows its lead: a polished, intimate restaurant where the set menus move between classical French technique and flavors from further afield. The hostess runs front of house with the kind of warmth that makes a tasting menu feel less like an occasion and more like dinner with someone who actually planned it for you.

  32. High ceilings and original woodwork from a converted university building frame the open kitchen at this hotel restaurant, where the chef pulls Southeast Asian flavors into something more considered than the setting might suggest. Counter seats let you watch the langoustines get glazed with katjang pedis and sambal while a curry foam appears from nowhere. The Michelin Guide has taken note.

  33. Rank 177. Veneur

    Classic French

Wood panelling, ornate mouldings, and a terrace that could pass for a side street in Paris: this classic French restaurant on the Weteringschans wears its old-school bones well. The kitchen, built around the grill and open fire, leans into bold, unapologetic flavours, with meat doing most of the talking. The wine list offers a serious pour-by-glass selection, and the service runs warm without fuss.

  34. A wine cellar with its own pétanque court sets the tone before you've even seen the menu. This is a French restaurant where hardwood floors, marble tables, and a garden view upstairs make the whole operation feel quietly grand. The chef leans into sun-soaked French cooking with a Mediterranean drift, technically confident and not at all stuffy about it. Lunch runs a shorter menu; evenings open up to à la carte or a tasting format.

  35. A 19th-century villa in Voorburg that hasn't forgotten it's a villa, with the kind of rooms that make French cooking feel like the obvious choice. Chef Marko Karelse runs a proper classical kitchen, the sort where technique is visible in every plate without anyone making a speech about it. The menu shifts between à la carte and set options, and the asparagus in season draws its own following. Elegant without being stiff.

  36. Anchors on the tiles, scale patterns on the windows, and a blue-and-white palette that commits to the nautical bit without apology. This is a serious seafood restaurant where the kitchen stays close to classical tradition, meaning bisques with real depth, lobster cooked to a translucent finish, and fish that actually gets a moment to rest. Oysters, platters, tasting menus, a long à la carte; order the platter ahead or you'll wish you had.

  37. There's no menu at this intimate Groningen restaurant, just the kitchen's judgment and yours to trust it. The chef sends out course after course of refined, inventive cooking, with wine pairings chosen to follow along. The room is small and the team genuinely seems to enjoy themselves, which tends to loosen up the guests. A Michelin Selected spot for an evening that unfolds on the kitchen's own terms.

  38. Rank 177. Watergang

    French

  39. Rank 177. Wielinga

    Classical French

A canal-side terrace on the Nieuwe Rijn is the obvious place to sit, though the intimate front dining room of this French restaurant gives Leiden's foot traffic something to envy. The chef runs a set menu with choices at each course, plus à la carte, leaning on classical French technique with just enough modern restraint to keep things interesting. Lunch costs noticeably less than dinner, which is useful information.

  40. A converted coach house on the grounds of a medieval convent, with vineyards out back and wine barrels greeting you at the door. This French restaurant fills the old carriage space with natural light and a rustic warmth that somehow suits the bold, globe-trotting cooking: lamb shoulder in red curry, smoked feta ravioli, charred fish with green apple. The mignardise at the end comes with a QR code recapping your meal, which is either charming or a little much, depending on your personality.

  41. A thatched roof on a terrace above the lake in Utrecht's city park sets the scene at this old-school French restaurant that has been a fixture here forever. The menu leans classic, with a fish course in beurre blanc alongside a steak tartare given a quiet Asian detour. The wine list keeps pace. Drop in late afternoon and you can skip dinner entirely in favor of a drink and oysters watching the water.

  42. Rank 177. Witlof

    French

A moss-covered wall and paintings of fish set the tone at this cosy French restaurant overlooking the Waal River in Nijmegen. The kitchen does classic French technique with regular Asian detours, a mirin hollandaise being the kind of thing that makes the approach click. There's no menu to study: the chef runs surprise menus only, so you're handing over the wheel entirely. The cheerful front-of-house makes that feel less like a gamble and more like a night off.

  43. An old railway bridge over the IJ isn't the obvious spot for a creative tasting-menu restaurant, but the view makes a decent argument for itself. Chef Michael Wolf runs the kitchen like a working studio, testing ideas on diners and refining whatever sticks, so the menu shifts as the experiments evolve. Expect ambitious, international cooking with a fondness for reinvention, a turnip Wellington here, an unexpected surf and turf there. Industrial space, sophisticated food.

  44. A cosy fine dining room tucked down a cobbled street in the Jekerkwartier, with a wine bar at the front for anyone who just wants an afternoon glass and something small. The kitchen leans into bold flavours with a quiet thread of acidity running through the plates, and the wine pairings have a way of arriving from an unexpected direction. The kind of place where two people named the restaurant after themselves, which tells you something about the stakes.

  45. Rank 177. YANO

    Fusion French

Scandinavian lines meet a Japanese calm in this intimate Rotterdam dining room, where the mood stays warm thanks to a front-of-house that clearly means it. The chef draws on Moluccan heritage and classic French technique, and the cooking lands somewhere precise and personal rather than merely eclectic. The Michelin Guide has it selected. A cured mackerel dish built on a grandmother's recipe gives you the idea quickly.

  46. Rank 177. Zuid by Adrian Zarzo

  47. A private club occupies the lower floors, and the luxury boutique hotel above it inherits that same air of velvet exclusivity. Nepalese carpets, French wallpaper, Italian curtains, and enough contemporary art to keep you busy on a rainy Tuesday fill rooms that lean hard into neo-Baroque opulence. The Michelin Guide awarded it 2 Keys. Your butler, yes butler, will handle most whims before you've finished articulating them.

    The awards

  48. The Rembrandt Suite sits where the Night Watch once hung before it moved across town, which sets the tone for a hotel that has been housing guests since Amsterdam was finding its footing. Rooms run small but bright after recent renovations, and the better ones look out over the Kloveniersburgwal canal. The Dutch breakfast spread and a marble staircase are the charming consolations for skipping the Jacuzzi. The Michelin Guide awarded it 2 Keys.

  49. A former 17th-century courthouse on the Prinsengracht, fitted out by designer Piet Boon with a thousand original artworks and the kind of generously sized rooms Amsterdam doesn't usually deal in. The Rosewood holds two Michelin Keys. Common spaces, from the Grand Library to the courtyard lounge, feel welcoming rather than grand-hotel imposing, which takes more effort than it looks.

    The awards

  50. The building's old lecture-hall bones, high ceilings and tall windows facing Oosterpark, give this luxury boutique hotel a perpetual back-to-school feeling, even in July. Housed in a restored university building, it holds the Michelin Guide's 2 Keys. Rooms run to bespoke beds and heated floors; one suite adds a grand piano and a marble soaking tub. A roaring-twenties cocktail lounge named for Fitzgerald handles the evenings quite confidently.

  52. A heated rooftop pool looking straight out over the Royal Palace gives you a sense of how W Amsterdam sets its sights. The hotel splits across two heritage buildings, one a former telephone exchange, the other a century-old bank, and the contrast holds inside too: the Exchange side runs lively and social, while the Bank building leans quieter and more indulgent, with a spa and a detox bar for guests who mean business about doing nothing.

  53. The grand façade faces the Amstel River and has been doing so for what feels like forever, which sets the tone before you've even unpacked. This is a classic luxury hotel, Old World in the most unapologetic sense, all high ceilings and gilded interiors that make you feel like you've stumbled into a canal-house fever dream. Water taxis run from the door, and the Rijksmuseum is a comfortable walk away for when guilt sets in.

    The awards

  54. A Michelin Key boutique hotel on the Singel canal where every one of the 14 rooms is themed around a historic Dutch trade, cartographers, shoemakers, and the rest. Vintage tools become light fixtures, airplane doors serve as wardrobes, and a penny-farthing turns up in the bathroom because why not. The whole thing runs with the warmth of a family inn that somehow also has a very strong opinion about upcycled antiques.

    The awards

  55. The only terraced castle in the Netherlands, Château Neercanne sits high above the Jeker Valley with Baroque gardens and marl caves running beneath it. Seven suites occupy a restored 17th-century lodgment, so you're sleeping inside the history rather than admiring it from the gift shop. A Michelin-starred restaurant and a bistro are on-site, which takes care of the question of where to eat. The Michelin Guide awarded it 2 Keys.

    The awards

  56. The Soho House brand planted its members-only flag in the Bungehuis, a restored Art Deco building from the 1930s, and Amsterdam took to it like it was always meant to be here. The hotel rooms feel more curated than decorated, compact by design but genuinely comfortable, and the shared spaces, from Cowshed spa to a 36-seat cinema, do most of the heavy lifting. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

  81. Café de Klepel is a canal-side brown-café type on a street with several near-twins, so if the sidewalk tables are gone when the sun comes out, a backup is a few steps away. It takes the usual bar snacks a notch up, with a beer list that goes past the pilsner and sparkling wine that isn't just prosecco or cava. Good for solo celebrating, since the anchovies don't require a feast to justify showing up.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
