  1. Rank 588. The Sun Inn

    Mediterranean

    The awards

  2. Rank 588. The Swan Inn

    Traditional British

The pub dog greets you before the staff do, which sets the tone perfectly. This old village inn, tucked into the South Downs near Fittleworth, leans hard into everything a proper British pub should be: a refurbished interior that still feels worn-in, a friendly room, and traditional cooking that runs to devilled kidneys and Barnsley chop. No pretension, no foam, just hearty food done with care.

  4. You reach it by climbing an external staircase above the Wightlink ferry terminal, which is either charmingly eccentric or a mild inconvenience depending on your luggage situation. This harbourside restaurant opens onto a broad terrace with water views that make the whole trip to Yarmouth feel justified. The classically based menu leans heavily on fish and local island produce, with enough wit to name a crab dish "crab and chips" without irony.

  5. A Talisker dram poured over your oysters is a signature move at this seafood restaurant on the edge of Loch Harport, with the distillery sitting near enough that a tour slots neatly around a meal. The kitchen leans on whatever Skye's waters and hills are giving up, so the menu runs from fresh catch to local venison and haggis. The views across the loch do a lot of the heavy lifting before the food even arrives.

  6. Rank 588. The Three Tuns

    Modern British

A snug pub on Henley's main square, co-owned by the butcher next door, which tells you everything you need to know about the meat on the menu. The Butcher's Board rotates with whatever's good that week, lamb chops or bavette among them, and the kitchen keeps things unfussy in a way that feels deliberate rather than lazy. Grab a table on the terrace in summer before anyone else does.

  8. The fireplaces still smell of centuries of wood smoke, even after the old pub became a proper restaurant. It sits on Rye's cobbled East Street with a rustic, slightly bohemian room that suits the town well. The kitchen casts a wide net, moving between Cantonese and classical French in the same meal without making a fuss about it. Rye draws visitors on its own merits, and this is a natural place to land when the cobblestones start winning.

  9. Rank 588. The Victoria

    Modern British

A proper neighbourhood pub in one of London's smugger postcodes, which keeps it grounded with quiz nights, Sunday lunches, and prices that don't require a moment's pause. The conservatory looks out onto a terrace and doubles as the dining room, where the menu runs from fish and chips to grilled sardines with caponata. The apple cake is the chef's version of his mother's Polish recipe, which is the kind of detail that earns a dessert its place.

    The awards

  10. Rank 588. The Victoria

    Modern British

A converted Victorian beer house on the high street, with exposed brick, open fireplaces, and a garden terrace that earns its keep in good weather. The menu is modern British with a classical spine, the kind of place where chicken Kiev arrives without irony and a char-grilled steak is sized for two. The wine list and the beer selection are both long enough to cause mild indecision. Surrey locals fill the banquettes like they've never considered eating anywhere else.

  11. Rank 588. The Vineyard

    Wine Bar

Wine is genuinely the organizing principle here, not a selling point: over 70 options by the glass gives you room to wander. This smart hotel restaurant in West Berkshire leans elegantly into that logic, with a carte in the main room and a seasonal tasting menu with pairings tucked into The Tasting Room next door. A nearby vineyard supplies local sparkling wine, which is a nice touch if you're the kind of person who appreciates provenance with their first pour.

  13. Rank 588. The Warwick

    Modern British

Wood-panelled walls and a garden terrace inside a part-Edwardian manor make the setting feel like a prop from a very tasteful period drama. The Warwick is a country house dining room that leans into the produce rather than the pomp, with a seasonal menu that keeps its focus firmly on what's growing nearby. On a warm evening, the terrace does most of the convincing before the food even arrives.

  15. Rank 588. The West House

    Modern British

A former rock drummer runs this family-owned restaurant tucked inside a centuries-old timbered cottage in a quiet Kent village, and the transition from stage to kitchen has stuck. Modern British cooking with the fussiness dialed down, local wines, and service that matches the food's lack of ceremony. Parmesan churros sometimes appear as a snack, which feels like the right kind of surprise. A handful of themed bedrooms upstairs if you'd rather not drive home.

This is a cosy, unhurried restaurant where the menu follows the seasons and leans hard into Scottish produce, the kind of place where cookery books line the shelves and the soufflé is quietly worth planning around.

  18. The soaring ceiling gives away the building's past life as a bank, and The Langham hotel's attached pub leans into the grandeur without taking itself too seriously. The menu is quietly clever: snacks and a stovetop toastie sit alongside roast cod with mussel chowder, so you can drop in for a pint and bar bites or settle in for something more considered. Ask for the Green Room if you'd rather not eat under a vaulted ceiling with half of Marylebone.

  21. Rank 588. The Woodsman

    Modern British

    The awards

  22. The barn-style dining room has a vaulted ceiling and a Scandinavian lightness that sits a little unexpectedly in the West Berkshire countryside. This is a modern British restaurant where the kitchen garden feeds the menu, and big flavours do the work. The '25 Yards' gin is made from botanicals grown on site, which is a good excuse to settle into the bar before your table is called.

    The awards

  23. Rank 588. The Woolpack Inn

    Modern British

A market garden out back feeds the kitchen, which tells you most of what you need to know about this Hampshire countryside inn. The cooking is seasonal and unfussy, the kind where restraint does the work, and the menu runs toward game when the season allows. Rooms upstairs are named after said game birds, which is either charming or on the nose depending on your mood. A proper country pub that takes the food seriously without making you feel bad about your boots.

    The awards

  24. The open kitchen here is less a cooking station than a proscenium arch, with all six tables angled toward the chefs like a very intimate theatre. It's a tasting menu restaurant in Parkstone, run as a genuine family operation. Dish descriptions on the menu are almost aggressively brief, which does nothing to prepare you for what actually arrives, local and seasonal ingredients coaxed into something considerably more elaborate than the words let on.

    The awards

  25. Rank 588. Thomas, the brasserie

    Modern British

The sourdough comes from Ground, the team's own bakery down the street, and it sets the tone for what follows. Thomas is a neighbourhood brasserie in Cardiff's leafy Pontcanna that has quietly grown into something a local would never stop recommending. There's a formal bar for cocktails, then a choice of a cosy downstairs room or a moodier one upstairs. The kitchen leans hard into Welsh produce, Pembrokeshire oysters and lamb among them, handled with obvious technical care.

    The awards

  26. A crofter's cottage on the edge of Loch Dunvegan that has been drawing people out to this far western corner of Skye for a very long time. Inside, low beams and exposed stone walls hang contemporary art, which is either a charming contrast or a very Skye thing to do. The kitchen leans hard on local seafood, which makes sense when the waters are right there. Overnight rooms are split-level and quietly stylish, with a residents' lounge that earns its view.

    The awards

  27. Rank 588. Three Darlings

    Modern British

Named for Jason Atherton's three daughters, this all-day modern bistro on Pavilion Road runs from house-baked viennoiserie at breakfast through to late-night cocktails, covering a lot of ground without breaking a sweat. The cooking pulls from wherever it likes, Cornish sea bass sitting comfortably near char siu beef ribs, and the room has the kind of low-key polish that Chelsea does when it's not trying too hard.

    The awards

  28. Rank 588. Through the Woods

    Modern British

A logo instead of a sign marks the door of this tiny Modern British dinner spot in Crouch End, where 18 seats fill up fast and everyone eats at eight. The set four-course menu changes weekly, offers no choices, and you settle the bill when you book, which concentrates the mind. From a kitchen you can practically touch, the food runs to the nourishing and unfussy end of things.

    The awards

  29. Rank 588. Tillingham

    Modern British

Converted farm buildings on a 70-acre wine estate in the East Sussex countryside, with large windows looking out over the vines and enough ambient noise once the room fills to make dinner feel like an event. Lunch runs as a fixed-price three-course menu; dinner shifts to sharing plates. The cooking leans on what's grown or raised nearby, and the wine list draws heavily on the estate's own low-intervention bottles.

    The awards

  30. Rank 588. TimeSpirit

    Modern Spanish

The floor-to-ceiling windows frame the Speyside valley on one side; a whisky wall does the same on the other. This fine dining restaurant sits above The Macallan's distillery, with a menu shaped by the Roca brothers of El Celler de Can Roca, so Catalan technique turns up alongside Scottish ingredients in ways you didn't expect. The whisky pairing is, perhaps unsurprisingly, the move here.

  31. Eero Saarinen's old US Embassy building is now a Rosewood hotel, and the bones of that mid-century modernist space give this sushi restaurant an unlikely grandeur. Masayoshi Takayama, the name behind New York's Masa, runs the show. Sit at the seven-seat counter for omakase or order from the broader Japanese menu at a table. The ingredients lean toward the luxurious end of the spectrum, which the room quietly prepares you for.

    The awards

  32. Rank 588. Toklas

    Mediterranean

Owned by the people behind Frieze art magazine, this Mediterranean restaurant in a brutalist building near the Strand hangs Wolfgang Tillmans prints between art posters spanning four decades, so the room does most of the heavy lifting before the food arrives. The menu runs fresh and unfussy, the kind of cooking that pairs well with a terrace table and a glimpse of the Thames. Bookable by people who own tote bags, mostly.

    The awards

  33. A pub with 18th-century beams, a wood-burning stove, and a sea wall directly outside in the fishing village of Newlyn. The kitchen keeps it simple: fish and shellfish landed at the harbour next door, cooked in the kind of unfussy combinations that make sense when the ingredient is that fresh. The room is small and unpretentious, which feels about right for a place where the catch arrives practically through the back door.

  34. A bureau stuffed with the chef's own cookery books gives away the mood at this boutique hotel restaurant on the quieter south side of Sheffield. Tom Lawson runs a set seasonal menu, Modern British in spirit, that shifts with the market and reaches back to family memory, a cauliflower cheese that nods to his grandmother sitting alongside more classical technique. The room is warm and a little funky, the service confident without being stiff.

    The awards

  35. Rank 588. TOWN

    Modern British

Fried sage leaves with heather honey and chilli land on the table as snacks, and that tells you roughly where you are: a modern British restaurant in Covent Garden that takes seasonal produce seriously without taking itself too seriously. The room is designed to be noticed, the open kitchen keeps things lively, and a cocktail before dinner feels entirely encouraged. The quick lunch menu moves fast and costs little, which Drury Lane regulars have clearly figured out.

    The awards

  36. The milk loaf arrives with malt vinegar and chicken fat, and the room snaps into focus from there. Glynn Purnell's modern sharing-plates restaurant sits among the glass towers of a newer Birmingham quarter, running a fluid menu of snacks, small plates, and platters that shift with what's good. The team knows the wine list well and will steer you without making it a lesson.

  39. The stairs take you past an artisan sourdough bakery, so you arrive at this casual Mediterranean restaurant already weakened by the smell of fresh bread. The daily menu changes with the seasons and leans into bold, rustic flavors, pulling from producers across the British Isles. A set lunch keeps things affordable. The bread arrives first, and it would be strange if it didn't.

  41. A converted watermill with the original machinery still downstairs behind the bar, which is either atmospheric or slightly industrial depending on your mood. Upstairs, the beamed dining room goes the other direction, all dark furnishings and candlelit charm. The kitchen runs both a tasting menu and an à la carte built around seasonal produce, with a chocolate marquise that tends to linger in the memory longer than expected.

  42. The open kitchen at the center of the room sets the tone: vegetables are the whole point here, not a concession. Vanderlyle is a vegetarian tasting menu restaurant on Mill Road, relaxed enough in its shabby-chic fit-out that you don't feel like you need a reason to be there. The chef finds real range in seasonal produce, and the wine and soft drinks pairings are taken seriously. Book ahead.

    The awards

  43. Rank 588. Vetch

    Modern Pan-Asian

Shokupan milk bread and char siu pork belly on Hope Street, which tells you most of what you need to know about where Vetch is coming from. It's a modern restaurant that folds East Asian influences into its cooking without making a big deal of it, all housed in a room that keeps things neutral and unfussy. Dinner runs as a tasting menu; lunch and early evening offer something shorter that won't flatten your wallet.

    The awards

  44. Rank 588. Vinette

    Parisian Bistro

A Parisian wine bar transplanted to Broughton Street, with bistro cooking that pairs French classics and Scottish produce with the occasional Mediterranean detour. The set lunch includes wine, which is either very civilised or a very good reason to cancel your afternoon. Downstairs sits Vivien, a speakeasy-style cocktail bar, in case one concept wasn't enough. Stuart Ralston runs the room, and the room is cosy without trying too hard about it.

  46. Rank 588. Walled Garden

    Modern British

A glass-enclosed brasserie tucked behind the manor house at Lucknam Park, with a terrace and marble-topped tables that make a strong case for lingering. The menu runs from pasta and risotto to wood-fired pizza and day-boat fish, which gives it a Mediterranean looseness at odds with the very English hedgerows surrounding it. The team runs a set sharing menu built on seasonal British produce, foraged finds, and a low-waste philosophy that keeps pickles and ferments busy. The same crew runs a bakery and pottery studio around the corner, which explains both the sourdough and the plates it arrives on. 52. Rank 588. Where there's Smoke

    Modern British

The smoke hits you before you've even sat down, which is either a promise or a warning depending on your feelings about coal-fired cooking. This modern British restaurant in a pretty North Yorkshire market town runs a seasonal set menu built around whatever prime produce suits the embers that week. 55. The oyster beds sit just outside the window, which is about as farm-to-table as the phrase was ever meant to be. This family-run seafood restaurant on the Whitstable waterfront built its reputation on those native oysters, served natural or dressed up depending on your mood. The rest of the menu follows the catch, kept simple and close to the sea. A big terrace looks out over the estuary, which on a good day makes the whole thing feel almost unfairly pleasant.

  56. A copper-topped counter and a fire pit sit at the center of this interactive restaurant, built into a courtyard marquee at a hotel whose walls are hung with Banksys and Damien Hirsts. The chef cooks over the flames in front of you, which sounds theatrical until you notice how restrained the food actually is. Scallops with Indonesian butter, simple on paper, quietly meticulous in practice. The room earns its drama; the cooking earns its quiet.

  57. Rank 588. Wild by Tart

    Mediterranean

A former power station and coal store in Eccleston Yards, now a light-filled brasserie under a lofty glass roof with an open kitchen keeping things lively. The menu runs Mediterranean, with wood-fired cooking doing most of the talking. Flatbreads come out flame-licked and loaded, and the heartier mains lean rustic and unfussy. A small shop tucked inside sells provisions for anyone who wants to recreate the vibe at home, which is optimistic but charming.

  59. Rank 588. Wild Shropshire

Fourteen seats, a daily changing surprise menu, and almost everything grown on the chef's own farm nearby. This intimate Modern British restaurant in Whitchurch takes field-to-fork seriously enough to have its own fields, then tilts the produce toward Japanese technique, koji and yuzu sitting comfortably alongside Shropshire soil. The team is warm without being performative, which is harder to pull off than it sounds.

  60. Waxed wooden floors and terracotta walls overlook Chelsea Green in a way that makes you feel you've stumbled into a Tuscan trattoria without the flight. This Italian neighbourhood restaurant keeps things ingredient-led: a raw bar of oysters and tartares, prime cuts off the grill, and homemade pastas that quietly steal the show. The Wagyu oxtail tortelli has a way of making every other plan for the evening feel less urgent.

  62. Rank 588. wilks

    Modern French

Three tables in a terrace row of independent shops in Bath's west end tells you everything about scale before you've sat down. Wilks is a set-menu restaurant where classical French technique quietly does the work, with wild seafood and seasonal meats steered in subtly international directions. The wine list leans heavily French, with organic and biodynamic small producers getting the shelf space that bigger names usually hog.

  63. Rank 588. Willett's

    Modern British

Crumpet snacks set the tone at this clubby restaurant and bar inside the Cadogan Hotel on Sloane Street, where the menu reads like a love letter to British cooking, right down to the wines. The two salon dining rooms lean comfortable and Chelsea-smart, and the kitchen follows through with lamb faggots, day-boat fish, and puddings that veer into deliberate nostalgia, a sherry trifle apparently traced back to the chef's grandmother.

Worth knowing: there is reportedly an elephant buried in the garden, which is either a great conversation starter or a reason to avoid the lawn.

The cocktail list leans Asian-influenced and the team is the kind of friendly that doesn't feel performed.

A separate building on the sea wall means the Atlantic is basically your table setting at this relaxed seafood restaurant attached to the Watergate Bay Hotel. 76. The house term is "Britalian pizza," which tells you most of what you need to know about this South London pizzeria. The dough is light and well-worked, built for toppings that lean into British flavor alongside the more traditional options. Purists may want to sit down before they open the menu, but everyone else tends to be pleasantly disarmed. It ranked in 50 Top Pizza Europe, if you need a reason to make the trip down to Peckham.

  77. Rank 1277. 69 Colebrooke Row

    Cocktail Bar

The bar bills still come printed from "The Bar With No Name Ltd," even though there's now a branded canopy outside giving the whole speakeasy game away. This tiny cocktail bar on a quiet Islington corner seats fewer than forty, so ring ahead. Inside, eight green industrial lamps hang spider-like over a two-tone room that lands somewhere between 1950s Italian café and serious molecular mixology den, which is a combination nobody else is attempting.

  78. A neighborhood pizzeria on London Road that's quietly gotten serious about its dough, working it toward a lighter, more digestible structure that holds the toppings without competing with them. The menu tilts contemporary without abandoning the classics, and the ingredients are chosen with more care than the setting might suggest. It ranked 31st in 50 Top Pizza Europe, which is a remarkable thing to achieve on a suburban high street.

  80. A cocktail bar born from misfortune, Casual by Tayēr started as the team's answer to a fire that shuttered their original spot. Tucked inside Cato on Mercer Street, it runs as a pop-up series, each chapter riffing on a new theme through the Tayēr lens. The drinks pull from both sides of the original pairing, Tayēr's creativity meeting Elementary's precision, and the tight space puts you closer to the bartenders than almost any bar stool could.

  82. Rank 1277. Devil's Advocate

    Cocktail Bar

A Victorian pump house tucked down one of Edinburgh's famously steep closes off the Royal Mile, Devil's Advocate is a cocktail bar with a back bar stacked with over 200 Scotch and world whiskies that stops most people in their tracks on the way in. The space runs across several levels, all sleek and modern in a way that shouldn't work inside a Victorian pump house but does. The cocktail list pulls equal weight with the whisky wall.

  83. A cocktail bar on the 52nd floor of the Shard, Gŏng has the views you'd expect and, rarer than it sounds at this altitude, cocktails that could hold their own at ground level too. The name comes from "dougong," the interlocking wooden brackets of traditional Chinese architecture, which you can spot supporting the shelves behind the bar. Shangri-La service, an infinity pool next door, and a horizon that covers most of southern England.

  84. Rank 1277. Hawksmoor

    British Steakhouse

The basement cocktail bar beneath the original Hawksmoor steakhouse, tucked under Spitalfields on Commercial Street. The drinks are complex but the staff wear it lightly, which is either the charm or the whole point. Named for the architect whose Christ Church looms just down the road, though the vibe runs more candlelit den than baroque monument. A five-star rating from Difford's Guide gives you a sense of how seriously the team takes a good cocktail.

  85. You enter through a red phone box at the mouth of Clifton Down station, which tells you most of what you need to know. Inside, the British theme runs all the way down, cozy sofas for groups, limited bar stools, and a pocket-sized menu small enough to pocket as a souvenir. The small team runs it like a living room they're genuinely attached to, and the bar shows it. A cocktail bar with a spy name and a neighborhood heart.

  86. Rank 1277. L’Antica Pizzeria

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

Neapolitan pizza in Hampstead, which tells you something about both the pizza and the neighborhood. L'Antica Pizzeria takes the tradition seriously without treating it like a sacred text, turning out light, airy dough with a fermentation that does the work quietly in the background. The room is cozy and informal, the pace unhurried, and the whole thing suits the leafy, unhurried village-that-forgot-it's-in-London energy of Heath Street.

  87. The paparazzi camped on the mews out back are, in their own way, part of the ambience. The Ladder Shed is the bar tucked into Chiltern Firehouse, the gothic Victorian fire station turned celebrity hotel on a quiet Marylebone backstreet. It draws the kind of crowd that arrives by arrangement and leaves by the side door, which makes ordering a drink feel faintly conspiratorial and, depending on your outlook, either tedious or a good story.

  88. Rank 1277. Milk and Honey

    Cocktail Bar

There's no sign outside, just a bell to push and a lobby that makes you feel like you're about to do something mildly illicit. Milk and Honey is a members-style cocktail bar on Poland Street with a downtown New York pedigree, the sibling of Sasha Petraske's Manhattan original that helped reshape what a serious bar could be. The hush inside is very much the point.

  89. The bar top is cast from old pavement lights, and the water carafes are repurposed gin bottles, which tells you everything about the aesthetic before you've ordered. Sager and Wilde is a candlelit wine bar on Hackney Road, bare brick and unpretentious, where the list is the whole point. Early evenings, light cuts through the Venetian blinds at a mood-appropriate angle; after that, candles take over and the room does the rest.

  93. Rank 1277. The Gibson

    Cocktail Bar

  94. A white marble bar with glass shelving draws the eye the moment you walk into this hotel cocktail bar on the upper floor of the Blythswood Square. Red velvet seating and a long chandelier set the tone, which is somewhere between grand and genuinely comfortable. Waiters bustle between the white columns with the quiet urgency of people who mean it. Difford's Guide awards it five stars, which in cocktail-bar terms is the whole stack.

  95. Rank 1277. Trailer Happiness

    Tiki Cocktail Bar

Cork tiles, shag pile, and Zombies served in tiki mugs: Trailer Happiness is a basement cocktail bar in Notting Hill that leans hard into mid-century Californian trailer-park kitsch and never apologizes for it. The room feels like a bachelor pad that got stuck in 1966 and decided to stay, which is more or less the point. Rum drinks and tiki culture are the whole religion down here, and the vol-au-vent energy is entirely real.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
