  1. Rank 191. Marcel

    French

The dining room occupies the restored Marcel Breuer building that once held the Whitney Museum, and the walnut paneling and candlelight make you feel like someone finally figured out what to do with the space. This is a French café and brasserie from the team behind La Mercerie, with omelets, steak au poivre, escargots, and madeleines warm enough to make Proust feel vindicated. Very Upper East Side, in all the ways you'd expect.

  2. Rank 191. Miss Ada

    Middle Eastern

A backyard garden in Fort Greene that fills up fast enough to make you wonder if everyone in Brooklyn got the same text. Miss Ada is a Middle Eastern restaurant built around sharing: hummus crowned with lamb shawarma, charred kofta skewers, market salads, and whipped ricotta with honey that blurs the line between course and dessert. The kitchen is reportedly tiny, though nothing on the table suggests it. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and walk-ins can try their luck at the bar.

  3. Rank 191. Olmo

    Mexico City

A cantina in Crown Heights where communal tables and light wood make the whole room feel like somebody's relaxed dinner party. The cooking pulls from Mexico City, snacky and nostalgic in the best way, ranging from chicharrón preparado to a carne asada topped with verdolaga greens and a smoky chipotle béarnaise that overshadows everything else on the plate. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks.

  4. A whole snapper, deep-fried twice for a crunch audible from across the room, arriving upright as if still swimming, tells you everything about what kind of soul food restaurant this is. Six tables on Staten Island, pitchers of rum punch and sangria on nearly all of them, and a dining room that always feels like a party that forgot to wait for a reason. The New York Times named it one of New York's best new restaurants in 2024.

  5. Tucked inside ABC Carpet & Home, this vegetarian restaurant runs on the kind of clean-lined, chandelier-scattered energy that makes a green juice feel entirely appropriate in a wine glass. The menu moves through breakfast, brunch, and lunch with pressed juices and kombuchas alongside clever plant-based plates. The New York Times named it among the 100 best restaurants in the city, which the business crowd and the ladies-who-lunch set have known for a while.

  6. Rank 205. Atoboy

    Korean

The room is minimal to the point of industrial, which keeps the focus where it belongs: Korean cooking that doesn't explain itself to anyone. This Gramercy fine dining spot runs a prix-fixe-style menu where the combinations are adventurous but never alienating, the sort of place where kimchi beurre blanc makes complete sense by the second bite. Regulars book well ahead, and the team's warmth closes the gap between the spare room and a very full table.

  7. Rank 205. Cafe Commerce

    Contemporary American

The coconut cake, four layers tall and with its own devoted following, tells you a lot about what Cafe Commerce is going for. This is a neighborhood restaurant on the Upper East Side, warm and a little glamorous, where Harold Moore runs a contemporary American menu with French and Italian pulls. Steak Diane shares space with sweet potato tortellini carried over from the beloved original. The kind of place you book for a Tuesday because you deserve a Tuesday like this.

  8. The line out front in Long Island City is your landmark. Casa Enrique is a buzzy Mexican restaurant where family recipes share the menu with tacos and guacamole, but the kitchen finds its footing with the bigger plates: braised lamb shank, branzino marinated al pastor, and a mole that appears in several forms and never disappoints. Frozen watermelon margaritas keep arriving whether you asked or not, which is not a complaint.

  9. Rank 205. Eléa

    Greek

Whitewashed brick, weathered wood beams, and soft lighting give this Upper West Side Greek restaurant the kind of room that makes a Tuesday feel like a reasonable night out. The cooking leans rustic, with spreads and pita giving way to whole grilled fish in lemon and caper sauce. The menu reads like someone's Greek grandmother got hold of a very good pantry, which is more or less the point.

  11. Rank 205. il Gigante

    Italian

A small mug of grated parm arrives alongside the lasagna alla Bolognese for table-side sprinkling, which tells you everything about this cozy Italian neighborhood restaurant in Ridgewood. The menu is short and unfussy, running from cured meats and fried calamari through cacio e pepe and branzino, with daily specials filling the gaps. Exactly the kind of place you start bringing your kids, and then keep going back to long after they've moved out.

  12. Jean-Georges Vongerichten started here before the global empire, and the cozy two-story townhouse still feeds the Upper East Side's moneyed regulars like it has been around forever. The menu reads like a confident neighborhood restaurant that doesn't need to impress anyone: roast chicken, seared salmon, rack of lamb. Seasonal, polished, and utterly unbothered by trends. The molten chocolate cake has outlasted several food movements and shows no signs of leaving.

  13. A bar anchors the narrow room at this buzzy south Indian restaurant named for the city at the tip of the subcontinent, which tells you where the kitchen's loyalties lie: seafood, regional spice, and coastal flavors that don't pull punches. The slow-cooked beef short rib, draped in Madras onion rings and crispy curry leaves, has become something people keep coming back to mention. The Michelin Guide has it selected.

  14. Gregory Gourdet runs this prix-fixe inside the Printemps department store on Wall Street, pulling Caribbean, French, and Asian threads into a tight, composed menu. The tilework and green patterned booths are very much meant to be photographed, and the crowd obliges. The duck glazed in cane syrup with tamarind jus is the kind of thing that makes the rest of the meal feel like buildup. The New York Times named the rice and beans among its favorite dishes of the year.

  15. Rank 205. Mario's Restaurant

    Historic Italian

  16. The omakase option is how regulars talk about this place, and the downtown room backs it up with a charged, buzzy atmosphere that makes sitting still feel like a missed opportunity. Nobu Downtown is fine-dining Japanese in a sleek, energetic space on Broadway, where the menu leans into small plates built for sharing. The celebrity-chef brand is global at this point, but the kitchen keeps the standards high.

  17. Rank 205. One White Street

    Seasonal Italian

A converted townhouse in Tribeca that runs its own upstate farm, so the vegetables on your plate were probably pulled from the ground by someone who also designed the menu. One White Street is a contemporary restaurant with both à la carte and tasting menu options, housed in a wood-paneled room with marble and tilework that makes "intimate" feel earned rather than euphemistic. The kitchen leans into bold, produce-forward cooking with a Michelin Guide selection to its name.

  18. Rank 205. Potluck Club

    Cantonese

Hong Kong cinema posters line the walls and a glowing marquee floats above the chef's counter at this high-energy Cantonese American restaurant on Chrystie. The cooking is generous and unfussy, built on good ingredients without making a big speech about it. The XO fried rice and salt and pepper fried chicken pull regulars back repeatedly. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and priced like they mean it.

  20. Gold busts line the walls of this cavernous Upper West Side Italian restaurant, which reads as a deliberate joke at the expense of every shoebox apartment in the neighborhood. The menu runs the familiar Italian playbook, calamari to tiramisu, but the kitchen adds enough texture and brightness to keep it from feeling rote. Generous tables, a big room, and a wine list that rewards lingering make it a natural anchor for the block.

  22. Rank 205. The Odeon

    French

The neon sign out front has been pulling in Tribeca's night owls since the neighborhood was mostly parking lots. This brasserie wears its '80s bones proudly, all red banquettes and buzz, and Vanity Fair once called it "a movie set that doubles as a restaurant," which tracks. The French-ish menu runs burgers to croque monsieur, comfortingly unchanged. The New York Times gave it a star in 2016.

  23. The buss up shut here is the size of a shirt and flaky as a biscuit, which the name, Trinidadian slang for "busted up shirt," promises and the kitchen delivers. This is a roti shop in South Ozone Park, cash and carry, no fuss. The New York Times put it on their 100 Best list, and the A train ride plus the half-mile walk from the station is apparently just part of the ritual now.

  24. Rank 226. Agi’s Counter

    Eastern European

The walls are painted cupcake pink, and yes, that is a bowl of Hungarian chicken broth with dumplings on the menu next to the crepes. Named for the chef's grandmother, this Crown Heights diner runs on Eastern European comfort food done with real care. The kitchen has a particular way with bread. The bar landed on Punch's Best New Bartenders list, the restaurant holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the chef is a James Beard nominee.

  29. Rank 226. Çka Ka Qëllu

    Eastern European

Glass cases of embroidered regional dress line the walls of this Albanian restaurant on Arthur Avenue, next to the old retail market, where the food runs to burek and cabbage rolls stuffed with ground veal. The Bronx's Albanian community has been quietly growing for decades, and this is where it eats. The menu is the comforting, filling kind, and the brumat sampler is a reasonable place to start if you've never eaten Albanian before.

  31. The xiao long bao are made in-house, and you can watch through the glass as the pleating happens at speed. This is the New York outpost of the global dumpling chain, set in a large underground room near Times Square that runs loud and packed most hours of the day. The New York Times gave it a star in 2024, which did nothing to shorten the line. Expect a menu of soup dumplings in various fillings, a youthful crowd, and prices that won't require a moment of hesitation.

  32. Rank 226. Eulalie

    French

You book by phone, get buzzed through the door, and receive a handwritten menu, which either sounds precious or exactly right depending on your mood. Eulalie is a cozy, French-leaning prix-fixe spot in Tribeca where the formality is purely theatrical, the cooking is warm and assured, and the Named by the Times one of New York's best new restaurants in 2024, it feels less like a debut than a place that's been waiting for you to find it.

Hart's is a snug Mediterranean restaurant tucked behind the Franklin Avenue subway stairs, serving the kind of cooking that makes you wonder why anyone needs a big kitchen. The slate-blue façade is easy to miss, which is part of the charm.

Lakruwana is a Sri Lankan restaurant on Staten Island where street food drives the menu, the room runs loud and colorful, and the owner works every table like it's a reunion. 37. The gleaming open kitchen is the first thing you see, all stainless steel and quiet drama, before the eight-course French tasting menu even begins. It started as an underground dinner party circuit, which explains the intimate feel that downtown Brooklyn's fancier arrivals don't quite manage. The team walks you through wine pairings course by course. An AAA Four Diamond restaurant, and the room takes that seriously without making you feel graded.

  40. The carriage house bones are the whole point: a fireplace center stage in winter, and windows that swing open onto a cobblestoned side street in summer, letting Barrow Street essentially become part of the room. This is a fine dining institution that New Yorkers bring people to when they want the city to do the heavy lifting, which it does without much trouble. 44. Rank 226. Zimmi's

    French

The madeleines come out warm, baked to order, gilded nearly brown at the edges, and the Times critic named them among her favorite dishes of the year without mentioning Proust once, which takes restraint. Zimmi's is a rustic Southern French bistro on Bedford Street, the kind of place that makes butter-and-lemon sponge cake feel like an event without making a production of it. West Village regulars fill the room early.

  45. Rank 249. Cafe Katja

    Austrian

  46. A Peruvian ceviche shop tucked just under the elevated train tracks in Richmond Hill, earning a Michelin Bib Gourmand without much fuss about its location. Tree stumps with cushions serve as patio seating, and Latin music hits you at the door. The leche de tigre arrives in a martini glass with octopus, scallops, and shrimp, and the pork tamal, steamed in bamboo, makes a quiet case for itself from the corner of the menu.

  47. The line out the door in Sunset Park is a reliable fixture regardless of weather. This Sichuan restaurant holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and packs its two floors with backless stools and no-frills wooden tables, which keeps the focus on the food. The kitchen goes lighter on the chili oil than you'd expect, coaxing complex flavors rather than just heat. Staff with earpieces navigate the room efficiently and are happy to guide first-timers through the menu.

  63. Smoked beef brisket on rye with mustard is the calling card at this Montreal Jewish deli in Boerum Hill, where the portions operate on a scale that suggests the kitchen has never heard the word "restraint." Poutine comes finished several ways, the latkes and knishes are not an afterthought, and a sidewalk takeout window handles overflow when the counter and communal tables fill up, which they do.

  64. The soup dumplings in the crab version are reason enough to find a table at this polished SoHo Chinese restaurant, where the room runs lanterns and a front bar and the kitchen turns out food that feels more Flushing than fashionable. A serious wine list paired with Chinese cooking in Chinatown, right across from Seward Park. Tolo is a compact wine bar where the chef brings real polish to familiar dishes, the kind of place where the small tables fill up fast and nobody seems to mind. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand. Zalto glasses and a long, considered pour list signal that the wine half of the equation is no afterthought.

    Modern Korean

Burrata with rice cakes and gochujang-marinated chicken is either a terrible idea or a very good one, and this Lower East Side gastropub has decided it's the latter. The menu is rooted in Korean flavors and then takes a hard left into stranger, more interesting territory, with everything designed to be shared. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a place this loose-limbed and fun.

  72. Rank 276. Alley 41

    Sichuan

You have to find it first, which is half the fun: Alley 41 is tucked off Flushing's Main Street, and the room inside, all concrete and curved wood, reads more like a design hotel than a Sichuan restaurant. The electronic menu is long but the photos are accurate, so trust them. Mapo tofu and roasted-chili braised beef arrive fast and genuinely fiery. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and the heat alone earns the detour.

  73. Carne asada griddled until caramelized and crisp under a snow of Chihuahua cheese is the move at this bright, modern Mexican restaurant in Prospect Heights. Light-flooded windows and a bar lined with stools give it a neighborhood feel, but the cooking leans inventive. The Michelin Guide picked it up with a Bib Gourmand, which tracks. Churros with acacia honey and chocolate atole sauce close things out on exactly the right note.

  74. Family recipes are the spine of the menu here, though Chef Max Wittawat dresses them up considerably. Bangkok Supper Club is a chic contemporary Thai restaurant in the West Village where the cocktail program pulls as much attention as the food, and the room has the candles-and-low-lighting energy to match. The Michelin Guide has it selected. Dishes read simple on paper and then arrive full of dramatic contrasts, which is the whole point.

  75. Rank 276. C as in Charlie

    Southern Fusion Korean

A ten-dish menu split between Southern comfort and Korean flavors sounds like a dare, but the chef at this snug Bleecker Street tapas spot pulls it off without breaking a sweat. Galbi jus over gruyere grits, harissa-glazed ribs, banana pudding with misugaru, it's a small room and the tables are close enough that your neighbors will probably want to order the same things. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks.

  76. Negroni Jell-O cubes with Castelvetrano olives floating inside them is pretty much the thesis statement for this quirky Brooklyn restaurant. The menu is built for sharing and runs on a kind of gleeful nostalgia gone sideways, muffuletta dim sum sitting comfortably next to garlic knot monkey bread. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a place this fun at this price.

  78. Rank 276. Chavela's

    Creative Mexican

The guacamole comes loaded with smoked trout and morita chile salsa, which tells you everything about where Chavela's is headed. This Crown Heights Mexican restaurant earns its Michelin Bib Gourmand behind a wrought-iron door and into a room of vivid tiles and a wall of ceramic butterflies. The cooking leans creative without abandoning the mole that traditionalists came for, and the whole place runs warmer and louder than its Franklin Avenue address might suggest.

  79. Brunch at this cozy Greenpoint restaurant draws a line of famished locals most weekends, and the pancakes have their own small mythology in the neighborhood. Inside, it's a French-Canadian operation with a clear affection for pork: pâtés, terrines, and charcuterie-forward plates dominate a menu that stays rich and unapologetic. Dinner is quieter and just as good. A Michelin Selected Restaurant.

  80. Korean fried chicken shop on a busy Upper West Side corner, narrow and deep with an open kitchen you can watch from pretty much every table. The chicken comes out amber and lacquered in sticky black pepper soy, the kind that makes you rethink every other version you've had. The fried rice, loaded with Chinese sausage, kimchi, and a runny egg on top, is its own argument for staying for seconds.

  81. Mustard-yellow walls and hand-blown glass fixtures give this Indian bistro on Irvington's Main Street the feel of a neighborhood living room that happens to serve serious food. The menu leans into bold spice and local, organic produce, and the housemade mango chutney has its own quiet reputation. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which tracks: the room stays lively, the cooking is confident, and the tile-fronted bar fits one more than you'd expect.

  82. Rank 276. Dagon

    Middle Eastern

A corner restaurant on Broadway where the teal-washed dining room and floor-to-ceiling windows make the whole place feel like an exhale. The long counter fills up with regulars who clearly know their way around a Middle Eastern menu, and the off-center bar is quietly good for eating solo. Fresh-baked breads anchor the meal, and the kitchen's way with date syrup and tahini shows a chef who understands how sweetness and richness need each other.

  83. Strands of tiny silver beads cover the front window, so Daphne's announces itself quietly before you're even through the door. Inside, it's a refined, contemporary Italian-American restaurant in Bed-Stuy with a menu short enough to read twice. House-made pasta, shareable plates, and a grilled pork chop that takes its time all earn a look. The kind of neighborhood spot that makes you wonder why you ever leave Brooklyn.

  84. Rank 276. Dim Sum Go Go

    Cantonese

Dim sum made to order rather than wheeled around on carts sets this Chinatown shop apart from its neighbors. The photo menu keeps things moving, which helps on weekends when the room is full and tables are shared with strangers as a matter of course. Rice rolls, pan-fried pork dumplings, and soup dumplings all come out fresh. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the portions are generous enough that the slightly higher prices barely register.

  85. Portion sizes here run generous enough that the name feels like a promise kept. Gordo's is a laid-back Bushwick cantina where the chef, a Mexico City native, turns familiar Mexican cooking into something that earns its Michelin Bib Gourmand. The room skews family-friendly, the menu covers tacos, chile relleno, and mole enchiladas, and nobody leaves hungry enough to be annoyed about anything.

  86. Rank 276. HanGawi

    vegetarian Korean

You leave your shoes at the door, sink onto a cushion at a low table, and settle into what feels less like dinner and more like a scheduled exhale. HanGawi is an upscale, vegetarian-only Korean restaurant where the meditative music and temple artifacts are not ironic. The menu is entirely plant-based, the tea list gets as much attention as the wine list, and the Michelin Guide has given it a Bib Gourmand.

  87. Rank 276. Hupo

    Sichuan

Some nights you can hear the woks before you see the menu. Hupo is a sleek, narrow Sichuan restaurant in Long Island City where the heat is dialed to "fragrant" rather than "punishing," which is either a relief or a disappointment depending on who you ask. The mapo tofu uses house-made cubes and the wontons come in a sweet-spicy sauce that earns its own regular fan base. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of place you end up at twice in one week.

  88. Rank 276. HWARO

    Korean

A 22-seat counter tucked inside Gui Steakhouse, up an elevator and easy to walk past without knowing. Sungchul Shim runs a multicourse tasting menu where Korean flavors meet French technique, and the two Michelin stars suggest the kitchen takes that fusion seriously. Chefs work at the center of the room in full view, which keeps everyone facing the same direction for once. The white soy custard with Osetra caviar has developed a following of its own.

  89. Rank 276. Ishq

    Modern Indian

A salmon-pink quartz bar runs the full length of the front room before giving way to a moodier dining space where everything arrives family-style, whether you planned it that way or not. This modern Indian restaurant on Avenue A earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand by actually delivering on the spice, depth, and nuance that the genre usually only promises. The lamb shank biryani is portioned for a small crowd, which is the correct way to order it.

  90. Rank 276. Jiang Nan

    Chinese

Roast Peking duck arrives on a silver tray with thin pancakes, which sets the tone for what Jiang Nan is doing: upscale Chinese dining that roams the whole country rather than planting a flag in one region. The room leans Imperial, all lacquer and stone and greenery, and it reads as date-night or business lunch depending on who you came with. The Michelin Guide has given it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a place this polished on Bowery.

  91. Rank 276. La Dong

    Vietnamese

Lotus-shaped lamps and Colonial-era wooden arches set the mood just off Union Square, where this Vietnamese restaurant earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand with cooking that goes well past the expected banh mi. Come with a group and order deep: the turmeric crepe with shrimp and fresh herbs is a sharp move, and the pho, poured tableside, arrives fragrant enough to rearrange your whole afternoon.

  92. Rank 276. La Vara

    Spanish

The slow-roasted suckling pig leg that anchors the menu tells you this isn't your standard tapas crawl. La Vara is a cozy Spanish restaurant in Cobble Hill where the kitchen takes cocina casera, home cooking, as both its premise and its ambition. Alex Raij's food has a playful, quietly inventive quality; the room draws the kind of neighborhood regulars who eventually stop looking at the menu and just tell the server to do whatever.

  93. Rank 276. Laliko

    Georgian Eastern European

A West Village Georgian restaurant where the wine list runs entirely from the Caucasus and the servers teach you how to eat khinkali before you embarrass yourself. Those large, broth-filled dumplings are the move, though the khachapuri, in either its cheese-molten or mint-bright form, will slow you down first. A long communal table anchors a room hung with murals. Michelin Bib Gourmand.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
