Rank 278. The Odeon
French
The neon sign out front has been pulling in Tribeca's night owls since the neighborhood was mostly parking lots. This brasserie wears its '80s bones proudly, all red banquettes and buzz, and Vanity Fair once called it "a movie set that doubles as a restaurant," which tracks. The French-ish menu runs burgers to croque monsieur, comfortingly unchanged. The New York Times gave it a star in 2016.

Spanish Steakhouse
José Andrés runs this steakhouse inside the Ritz-Carlton NoMad like a controlled burn, with an open charcoal and wood-fired kitchen that fills the room with smoke and a sense of occasion that most restaurants wouldn't dare attempt. The cuts run American and Japanese, aged both ways, cooked over fire that does real work rather than just looking good. It landed on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list, which tracks.

Rank 302. Best Bagel & Coffee
Bagel Shop
Some of the bagels here are so large they've lost their holes entirely, which feels like a metaphor for Midtown but is actually just breakfast. This no-frills bagel shop near Penn Station runs like a commuter train that actually shows up: the line moves, the bagels come out hot, and the chewy, twisty exterior is what you came for. The New York Times named it among the city's best, and the 8 a.m. crowd would agree without looking up.

The xiao long bao are made in-house, and you can watch through the glass as the pleating happens at speed. This is the New York outpost of the global dumpling chain, set in a large underground room near Times Square that runs loud and packed most hours of the day. The New York Times gave it a star in 2024, which did nothing to shorten the line. Expect a menu of soup dumplings in various fillings, a youthful crowd, and prices that won't require a moment of hesitation.

Rank 302. Eulalie
French
You book by phone, get buzzed through the door, and receive a handwritten menu, which either sounds precious or exactly right depending on your mood. Eulalie is a cozy, French-leaning prix-fixe spot in Tribeca where the formality is purely theatrical, the cooking is warm and assured, and the Named by the Times one of New York's best new restaurants in 2024, it feels less like a debut than a place that's been waiting for you to find it.

The name comes from South Korea's first carrier rocket, which tells you something about the ambitions in the room. The picture window looks out on a community garden at 9th and Avenue C, and that's about as decorative as this coffee shop gets. Ninth Street Espresso has been a purist espresso spot in Alphabet City since what feels like the dawn of specialty coffee, roasting its own beans out in Long Island City and keeping the menu ruthlessly short. A cookie, a vegan mini-loaf, a bench out front if the weather allows.

Thoughtful Coffee
Concrete floors, black accent walls, and two arc-shaped bars make this FiDi coffee shop feel like it wandered in from Brooklyn and decided to stay. A multi-roaster menu pulls from a rotating cast of serious names, and the espresso machine moonlights for by-the-cup drip. There's a small food menu, housemade pastries, and, naturally, wine. Laptop seating is deliberately scarce, which says everything about what the room is for.

French
The madeleines come out warm, baked to order, gilded nearly brown at the edges, and the Times critic named them among her favorite dishes of the year without mentioning Proust once, which takes restraint. Zimmi's is a rustic Southern French bistro on Bedford Street, the kind of place that makes butter-and-lemon sponge cake feel like an event without making a production of it. West Village regulars fill the room early.

The sea-blue tiled wall and intricate woodwork make this Upper West Side Indian restaurant feel like a deliberate escape from 72nd Street. Oak paneling, cherrywood bar, velvet seating, heavy curtains: Temple Bar is a cocktail bar that looks like the lounge of a grand hotel, minus the fusty clientele. A Sgroppino sits alongside a Ward Eight and an Espresso Martini, which is a menu that knows its history without being smug about it.

The honey cardamom toast alone sends a signal about where the Noortwyck's head is at. Steakhouse
The modest exterior on a quiet West Village street gives almost nothing away, which is apparently the point. Inside, 4 Charles Prime Rib is an intimate, old-school steakhouse with deep leather booths and staff who seem to know your name by the second drink. The prime rib comes three ways, the creamed spinach is non-negotiable, and the Valrhona chocolate pie in an Oreo crust lands like a closing argument.

The second-floor dining room on Avenue A reads like a very chic treehouse, all intimacy and low light. This vegan restaurant in the East Village brings a real polish to plant-based cooking, with dishes assembled like small arguments for taking the cuisine seriously. Korean Steakhouse
The aged steaks arrive finished with nothing but Maldon salt, which tells you something about the confidence level here. Gui is a Korean steakhouse in Times Square that leans into Japanese wagyu and USDA Prime cuts alongside raw bar and Asian-inflected sides like wagyu fried rice. The green-and-white checked tablecloths have been here so long they're practically load-bearing. JG Melon is an old-school Upper East Side burger joint where the dark wood bar stays busy, the staff is genuinely cheerful, and the cheeseburger is the reason The Infatuation named it one of New York's defining dishes. Sushi
Temaki, or hand rolls, are the whole point here, served open-style and passed directly from the crew to the counter while the nori is still crisp. The room is all blonde wood and gray-blue cushions, casual and unhurried in a way that West Village sushi rarely bothers to be. The plant-based options get the same care as the fish. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, for whatever that tells you about the price-to-pleasure math.

Family recipes are the spine of the menu here, though Chef Max Wittawat dresses them up considerably. Bangkok Supper Club is a chic contemporary Thai restaurant in the West Village where the cocktail program pulls as much attention as the food, and the room has the candles-and-low-lighting energy to match. The omakase counter tucked inside Kanoyama runs on select days only, so planning ahead is part of the deal. The room runs on wood counters and an open kitchen, and service moves at a clip, which suits the vibe. The menu leans into Asian street food with enough creativity to keep regulars guessing. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of spot where you'll spend less than you expect and think about it for days after.

Hawaiian
Polaroids of regulars tile every wall of this dimly lit East Village neighborhood restaurant, which has been doing Hawaiian comfort food long enough to feel like part of the block's furniture. The mochiko fried chicken comes with macaroni salad and King's Hawaiian rolls, the musubi platter runs from spicy spam to salmon tartare, and the German riesling list goes deeper than anyone sees coming. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and a genuinely easy room to spend a whole evening in.

Arancini at this Sicilian restaurant on Third Avenue arrive in a pool of light tomato sauce, golden and crisp in a way that makes "rice ball" feel like an insult. The menu runs through the kind of food that probably came off identical crackle-glazed platters in Sicily, and the rustic room is hung with a few of them. A Michelin Bib Gourmand pick. Before you leave, the specialty ingredients near the door have a way of following you home.

Cocktail Bar
Fifty floors up in the Ritz-Carlton NoMad, this cocktail bar from the José Andrés group takes its name from the Spanish words for cloud and light, which is either poetic or on the nose depending on how far into the menu you are. The views run 270 degrees over the city, and the drinks lean into reimagined classics, from an adonis to a tom collins. Dress accordingly; the room expects it.

Rank 350. Nyonya
Malaysian
Nasi lemak, the Malaysian classic of coconut rice with pickled veg, crispy anchovies, and curried chicken, is what the regulars reorder without looking up. Nyonya is a no-frills Malaysian restaurant in Chinatown, brick walls and wooden tables, where the menu runs long and the servers are opinionated enough to steer you past the obvious choices. The Michelin Guide gives it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a room this unpretentious feeding people this well.

Rank 350. Peppercorn Station
Sichuan
The southern edge of Bryant Park has quietly become Sichuan row, and Peppercorn Station is the bright, cheerful one with a menu built for ordering too much and splitting the bill. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and earns it with a kitchen that keeps the heat calibrated, nudging the sinuses rather than punishing them. A casual Chinese restaurant where the numbing, golden broths and fermented black bean mapo tofu do the talking.

Thai
A two-story Thai restaurant near Union Square that comes with a long bar, a full house most nights, and the kind of noise level that makes the food taste better. The menu covers a broad stretch of Thai cooking, classical and contemporary, with enough chili heat to remind you where you are. A Michelin Bib Gourmand pick that draws a crowd happy to wait for it.

Wine Bar
A natural wine bar on East Seventh Street where the list leans hard into Eastern Europe and the sommeliers can talk about it all night. The food menu is short and rotates, which keeps the regulars genuinely curious. Michelin gave it a Bib Gourmand, and the room, split between a communal high-top and a quieter dining area, fills up fast enough that a reservation is less optional than it sounds.

Rank 350. Sami & Susu
Mediterranean Wine Bar
The kitchen here runs without a proper gas stove, which makes the lamb ragu over house-made spätzle even more worth puzzling over. Sami & Susu is a narrow Mediterranean wine bar on Orchard Street, with a short seasonal menu that wanders the Middle East, a natural wine list, and a punky soundtrack. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and the staff seem genuinely unbothered by how much you order.

Rank 350. See No Evil Pizza
Pizzeria
A pizza shop inside a Times Square subway station, which sounds like a dare and turns out to be a genuinely good idea. Black-and-white checkered floors and 80s classics on the speakers give it a casual, slightly punk energy, and the thin-crust pies hold their own against the commuter chaos outside. Small plates cycle with the seasons before the pizza arrives. The Michelin Guide has taken note.

Japanese Noodle Shop
Buckwheat soba, hot or cold depending on what the weather is doing to you, has kept this East Village noodle shop humming for longer than most of its neighbors have existed. The room runs to booths, counter seats, and a calm, traditional feel that makes it easy to linger. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and one of the rare spots in the city where a walk-in during peak dinner hours won't leave you standing on the sidewalk.

Thai
Red lamps strung across the dining room push back hard against any suggestion this is just another Upper East Side Thai spot. It's a contemporary Thai restaurant pulling dishes from across the country, so the menu runs from Northern sai-ua spring rolls and khao soi to Southern Phuket-style curries, which is a longer journey than most places attempt. The cocktails are named after Thai temple festival games, a detail that earns its place. A Michelin Bib Gourmand.

Authentic Ramen Shop
The tonkotsu broth here is pork-forward but never heavy, which sounds like a small thing until you've slogged through a bowl that coats your throat like spackling compound. This Tokyo-based ramen shop in Midtown pulls its noodles in-house, and they hold their spring all the way to the bottom of the bowl. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand. The room is sleek enough for a working lunch and relaxed enough for a slow dinner.

Tex-Mex
Flour tortillas made in-house daily are the quiet backbone of this Tex-Mex taco spot in the East Village, where weathered wood and stained-glass chandeliers give the room a vintage roadhouse feel that has no business being this charming on Third Avenue. The menu leans into tacos and quesadillas, the cocktails are serious, and the Texas sheet cake with candied pecans is the kind of dessert that ends arguments. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

Rank 392. Charles Pan-Fried Chicken
Southern
This is a fried-chicken counter on West 72nd with no seating, so the plan is to order, take a bag, and eat on a bench like a person with nothing to prove. The chicken goes into bubbling skillets to order, which is why the wait exists and why nobody is allowed to rush it. Ribs, turkey wings, and smothered chicken are on offer too, along with lima beans that are a quiet scene-stealer. The chef was a James Beard Best Chef: New York State semifinalist in 2024.

Italian
Green lacquered chairs and upholstered nooks fill this Italian restaurant tucked into Rockefeller Center, brought uptown by the team behind SoHo's King. The open kitchen and bar counter keep it lively without tipping into noisy. The menu is short and focused, leaning into good pasta and a cocktail list that includes a negroni sbagliato bianco, which sounds made up but isn't.
