Rank 1. Restaurant Yuu
Contemporary French
Service begins with the lights dropping and curtains parting to reveal the full kitchen brigade standing at attention, which sets the tone for what follows. This is a tasting menu restaurant in Greenpoint where the chef's classic French training and Japanese background meet in a warehouse-scale dining room. Shellfish and proteins carry the menu, and a duck and foie gras pastry feels like a find from a more extravagant era. It holds a Michelin star.
-
Rank 2. Oxomoco
Mexican
Tacos share menu space with agua chile and tlayuda at this airy Greenpoint Mexican restaurant, which holds a Michelin star and carries itself like it doesn't need to mention it. The kitchen ranges across regional Mexico rather than settling into one lane, so the menu shifts around you a little each visit. The room is loud and packed in the way that usually signals something is going right.

Rank 4. The Four Horsemen
Natural Wine Bar
The natural wine list here won a James Beard Award, and the Michelin star belongs to the kitchen, which tells you this Williamsburg bar is doing two things at once and doing neither halfway. The room is famously small and the wait is famously brutal, but Nick Curtola's seasonal menu follows its own logic, landing somewhere between a great wine bar snack and something you'll think about for weeks. James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem is a co-owner, which explains the playlist.

Rank 7. ILIS
Nordic New American
The unmarked door on Green Street gives nothing away, which is sort of the point. Inside, a converted warehouse with wood-beamed ceilings holds a tasting menu restaurant built around a single organizing idea: every dish is either fired or chilled, and you watch the open kitchen run both with near-monastic focus. Chefs serve their own food here, no front-of-house divide. The Nordic New American cooking is ingredient-first, the room is genuinely dramatic, and the clamshell amuse-bouche is as ridiculous as it sounds.

Noodles
The chef makes the ceramic bowls himself, which tells you a lot about the pace of a meal here. This Greenpoint soba shop occupies a warehouse with factory windows and skylights, and the hand-cut buckwheat noodles, served cold or hot with dashi, are the point. Pricing runs steep for a noodle lunch, but the room is genuinely industrial and the gluten-free menu surprisingly complete. Soba-making classes also run here, if you'd like homework.

Polish Eastern European
A small pierogi shop tucked into Greenpoint, the part of Brooklyn that still feels like it never left Warsaw. The menu does exactly what it promises, with stuffed dumplings running savory to sweet, plus borscht, golabki, and kielbasa that could carry a meal on its own. Bolesławiec pottery doubles as the serveware, which is either charming or showing off depending on your mood. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and a shot of Polish liquor is basically required.

Rank 17. L'industrie Pizzeria
New York-style Pizza
The line out the door on South 2nd is the most honest review you'll find. This Williamsburg slice shop has a counter, a few standing ledges, and pizza makers working in plain sight from dough to oven. The crust is thin, crisp, and taken seriously. 50 Top Pizza ranked it the top slice shop in the country, and the New York Times put it on their short list too. Order, pay, wait for your name, eat standing up. That's the whole deal.

A Michelin-starred omakase counter tucked near Domino Park on a quiet Williamsburg block. The chef talks through the meal as it arrives, explaining which region the fish came from, why the rice is what it is, and how long he hunted for the aged soys, so the whole thing feels more like a conversation than a performance. The nigiri is the main event, and the rice gets refreshed throughout, a detail that separates the obsessives from the casual.

Black tablecloths, candlelight, and a deer skull resting on a bed of lichen: Fredrik Berselius runs a tasting menu restaurant in South Williamsburg that feels less like dinner and more like being guided through a dark forest by something polite but feral. The cooking is New Nordic in spirit, pulling from Northeastern seasonality, and it holds two Michelin stars and a spot on North America's 50 Best. Wear something dark; you'll blend right in.

French Contemporary
The "Laundromat" sign from the old tenant is still up out front, which means half the neighborhood has walked past a very good French bistro without knowing it. Inside, brick walls and vintage furniture set a mood that feels broken-in rather than designed, and the menu leans on Northeast ingredients for a modern French run through small plates and proper mains. Greenpoint regulars who've found it tend not to share the address.
-
Rank 23. Bonnie's
Modern Cantonese
Calvin Eng's Cantonese restaurant and bar sits on a nondescript east Williamsburg corner, close enough to the BQE that you'll feel the trucks. Inside, it reads like a retro Hong Kong diner, but the kitchen runs modern interpretations of regional Cantonese food, and the MSG Martini earned a spot on Esquire's national list. The Michelin Guide gives it a Bib Gourmand, and the James Beard Foundation named Eng an Emerging Chef nominee.

Exposed brick and poured cement set a sleek, airy backdrop for traditional Thai cooking that has been quietly reworked for the contemporary table. A disco ball spins over the dining room at this Graham Avenue pizzeria, where the thin-crust pies share the bill with house pasta and focaccia made in the open kitchen. The Italian wine list runs to two pages of sparkling alone, which tells you something about the ambitions here. The Calabrian soppressata and hot honey on the Diavola have a following. Michelin has it in the guide.

Rank 27. Lingo
Japanese-influenced New American
The name means "apple" in Japanese, which is the first clue that this Greenpoint comfort-food spot isn't playing by anyone else's rules. The menu takes American and European classics and folds in Japanese technique until neither side is quite recognizable, in the most compelling way. A Hokkaido beef curry baked into a golden oval pie is the thing people talk about. Selected by the Michelin Guide, and a 2025 James Beard semifinalist.

Korean
The chef's counter hides behind a banchan shop in Long Island City, which tells you everything about its priorities. Hooni Kim, a James Beard Award winner with a Michelin star, has spent years wild-fermenting and aging the Korean pantry staples, doenjang, ganjang, gochujang, that anchor his tasting menu. Dishes arrive looking almost spare, then insist on your full attention. The meal closes with a bowl of rice and kimchi that sounds like nothing and lands like a lot.

Brunch at this cozy Greenpoint restaurant draws a line of famished locals most weekends, and the pancakes have their own small mythology in the neighborhood. Inside, it's a French-Canadian operation with a clear affection for pork: pâtés, terrines, and charcuterie-forward plates dominate a menu that stays rich and unapologetic. Dinner is quieter and just as good. A Michelin Selected Restaurant.

The limestone facade on Broadway gives way to ash wood, mosaic tile, and a wide-open kitchen that runs the whole show. Williamsburg's dressed-up crowd fills the generously spaced tables, and nobody looks out of place in either a blazer or a good jacket.

Neapolitan Pizza
You order at the door, grab a table, and the pizza shows up without ceremony, which is exactly the point at this Greenpoint slice shop. The dough is soft and light in the way Neapolitan purists get worked up about, and the toppings stay out of each other's way. The bruschetta with honey and ricotta is a small, sweet detour worth taking. Ranked 32nd on 50 Top Pizza USA, Salsa keeps things casual enough that nobody feels underdressed.

The rooftop of the Hoxton Hotel in Williamsburg, with the Manhattan skyline doing its thing at sunset, is a solid place to eat skewers. This is Michael Solomonov's skewer house, and the format is pleasantly fixed: a spread of salatim to start, then meat and vegetable skewers over the coals, then soft-serve. Reservations are famously hard to land, which tells you something about how the room fills on a Tuesday.
-
Rank 44. Antica Pesa
Roman
Roman trattoria cooking in a room that manages to feel elegant without making you feel underdressed. Antica Pesa is the Brooklyn outpost of a Rome institution, and it takes the classics seriously enough to go well past the obvious ones. The wine list is long, the hospitality is warm in that old-country way, and a spot on the 50 Top Italy list for the world's best Italian restaurants suggests the room is doing something right across the river.
-
Rank 45. Enso
Omakase Sushi
A sleek omakase counter in Williamsburg where the chef runs an edomae-style sushi progression that moves from composed small bites through a focused nigiri course. The fish comes from specific Japanese sources, cured and aged with enough care that the sourcing actually shows on the palate. À la carte is available at the bar and garden if you're not committing to the full ride, which is at least a refreshingly honest policy.

Rank 48. Wenwen
Taiwanese Chinese
The tall, narrow wood-framed windows let you see the whole room before you walk in, which is a nice preview of a Taiwanese restaurant that doesn't hide anything. Eric Sze and partner Andy Chuang run a menu that moves between popcorn chicken dusted in a sweet-spicy blend and whole striped bass lacquered in black sugar and yuzu, and the beef noodle soup, built on a 16-hour oxtail broth, has a following of its own.
-
Rank 49. Madre
Mediterranean
The carved doors belong to the hotel next door; Madre has its own entrance, and its own agenda. This multi-level Mediterranean restaurant sits at the base of the Franklin Guest House, dressed in industrial bones but cooking with considerably more ambition. The menu drifts between the Mediterranean and Latin America without making a fuss about it, which is a style of self-confidence that suits the room.

Rank 51. Atomix
Modern Korean
A 14-seat counter in a Murray Hill brownstone basement, where each course of a modern Korean tasting menu arrives in bespoke ceramics with a card explaining its origins. The exterior is so understated that first-timers cluster on the sidewalk wondering if they have the right address. Two Michelin stars, a James Beard Award, and a spot at number twelve on the World's 50 Best Restaurants list suggest they do.
-
The original location of this festively orange Greenpoint coffee shop has a second room given over to quiet laptoppers and a shelf of free books, which sets the tone nicely. Cafe Grumpy roasts its own beans and has been around forever; the vibe is airy and unhurried, the kind of place that handles both first dates and long Sunday afternoons without breaking a sweat. Pastries, gluten-free options, and grab-and-go cold brew round things out.
-
A former automotive welding shop in East Williamsburg now houses this multi-roaster coffee boutique, where the menu leans into distilled coffee, blue algae, and clarified matcha alongside a hand-brew selection from roasters around the world. The back of the space runs a small craft brewery called Niteglow, so the afternoon espresso can pivot to a draft pour. It reads like a coffee shop that got very ambitious and kept going.

Rank 54. Bar Miller
Sushi
Bold colors and custom ceramics set the tone at this tiny omakase counter on the Lower East Side, where the whole vibe runs warmer and looser than the austere hush you might expect. The Michelin-starred kitchen leans into North American sourcing, using New York-grown rice and regional fish, with trim and offcuts turned into a house tostada. Local wine, beer, and cider round out a sake list that runs from Brooklyn to Japan.
-
Rank 55. I Cavallini
Regional Italian
Nick Curtola's trattoria across from sibling bar The Four Horsemen handles regional Italian with the kind of restraint that makes everything taste more intentional. Braised beef tendon shaved thin over acidic onions is the opening move, and it tells you exactly what kind of kitchen this is. Handmade pasta and rustic mains follow that same logic. The tiramisu is feather-light and enormous. Reservations go fast, but the bar at opening is a fine consolation.
-
Rank 56. Eleven Madison Park
Plant-based New American
Daniel Humm's tasting menu restaurant occupies a grand Art Deco dining room on Madison Square Park, where everything from the staff's suits to the water vases is custom made. The kitchen went plant-based a few years back, which caused a minor citywide meltdown, and the menu has been quietly winning people over since. Three Michelin stars, a Forbes Five Star, and an AAA Five Diamond.
-
Rank 57. Shalom Japan
Jewish fusion Japanese
Matzoh ball ramen is the menu's thesis statement, and it holds up. This creative South Williamsburg restaurant earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand by stitching Ashkenazi Jewish and Japanese cooking together without the seams showing, toro tartare landing on sake kasu challah, Wagyu pastrami pressed into milk bread. The room is small and the vibe is neighborhood-casual, which makes it easier to order the chocolate challah bread pudding without feeling self-conscious about it.

The quinoa-chickpea-walnut burger that made Brooks Headley famous is still on the menu at this vegetarian burger shop in the East Village, now in a bigger room with vintage diner bones. Nothing here pretends to be meat, which turns out to be the whole point. The Michelin Bib Gourmand and a New York Times top-100 spot follow naturally from cooking that treats bold seasoning and smart texture as the actual job. The cash-only policy has turned away more than a few first-timers who showed up unprepared, which is arguably part of the point. This old-school Brooklyn steakhouse runs on dry-aged Porterhouse, no-nonsense servers, and wood-paneled rooms full of people who've been coming for decades. The sides are simple, the schlag is non-negotiable, and the whole operation moves with the cheerful brusqueness of a place that has never once considered changing anything.

The cheese trolley rolls through the dining room with the gravity of a state occasion, which tells you everything about the register of this Alsatian French fine dining room at the base of the Grace Building near Bryant Park. Gabriel Kreuther holds two Michelin stars, a Forbes Five Star, and AAA Five Diamonds. The chef's French technique has an Alsatian core, the banquettes are cream, the servers are impeccably suited, and the Alsatian wine list is no afterthought.
-
Rank 67. Gramercy Tavern
Contemporary New American
The room divides in two: a buzzy front Tavern with bar seats and an à la carte menu, and a quieter Dining Room behind it running a prix-fixe. Both are fine dining by any sane measure, just at different volumes. The seasonal contemporary American menu leans on local produce with French technique behind it. Gramercy holds a Michelin star and a spot on North America's 50 Best. Danny Meyer's flagship, been around forever, and still the restaurant half of New York uses to impress the other half.

Rank 68. Penny
Seafood
Two marble counters run the length of the kitchen, fronted by mounds of ice holding oysters, clams, and Champagne in roughly equal proportion. Penny is an all-bar seafood restaurant above Claud in the East Village, and the whole point is watching things get shucked, sliced, and dressed in front of you. Sichuan
Some nights you can hear the woks before you see the menu. Hupo is a sleek, narrow Sichuan restaurant in Long Island City where the heat is dialed to "fragrant" rather than "punishing," which is either a relief or a disappointment depending on who you ask. The mapo tofu uses house-made cubes and the wontons come in a sweet-spicy sauce that earns its own regular fan base. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of place you end up at twice in one week.

Rank 71. Borgo
Italian
Andrew Tarlow, the restaurateur who more or less invented the Brooklyn communal-table aesthetic, runs his only Manhattan outpost here on East 27th. The neighborhood trattoria seats you at long tables with a daily menu scrawled on butcher paper, and the food leans into the gamy, the bitter, and the slow-cooked, the things that take patience to understand. A prix-fixe fine dining restaurant on Extra Place, it seats you at a horseshoe counter in a dark green room with mosaic tilework and a playlist sourced partly from Carmichael's cousin back home. The New York Times named it the top restaurant in New York City, and the cocktail bar next door is his too, for nights when the goat patty feels like the right move.

Italian
The penny-tiled floor and wood bar hit you before you even look at the menu, and the garden out back feels like someone transplanted a corner of Umbria to Williamsburg. This is a proper Italian restaurant, the sit-down-and-stay kind, with a seasonal menu that leans into shared plates and house-made pasta. The crowd tends to linger, which tells you something about the pacing. Wildflowers on the tables, olive walls, no fuss.
-
Thomas Chen's East Village fine dining room sits behind bay windows with a backlit bar and purple seats that somehow avoid feeling precious. The menu moves between Asian traditions and classical technique in ways that feel considered rather than calculated, and the Michelin-starred kitchen earns its star without announcing it at every turn. Service knows the food cold but doesn't lecture. A neighborhood room that quietly does serious work.
-
Rank 75. Sunday in Brooklyn
American
The signature pancake, a single skillet-sized round finished with hazelnut-maple praline and brown butter, is reason enough to plan a Saturday night around getting here Sunday morning. This all-day Williamsburg spot runs two floors with very different personalities: a rustic bar downstairs and a palm-dotted, whitewashed dining room above. Everything is baked in-house, and the sourdough with beer butter makes a strong case for arriving hungry before brunch even starts.
-
A petite East Village tasting menu spot where the produce comes from local queer farmers and the recipes go straight online for anyone who wants them. Chef Telly Justice runs two menus, one vegan and one omnivore, and Sunday brings a pay-what-you-want seating that fills fast. The kitchen leans hard into seasonal vegetables either way. Rank 92. Claud
French-inflected New American
A few steps below street level on East Tenth, this French-inflected New American restaurant runs on shared plates and an open kitchen that keeps the room honest. The cooking touches the familiar at a slant: grilled cabbage, tempura squash blossoms, and a six-layer chocolate cake soaked in vermouth and evaporated milk that nominally serves two. The New York Times placed it fifteenth on its list of the city's hundred best. Reservations are a project, but the bar absorbs the overflow gracefully.

Rank 93. Mesiba
Levantine Middle Eastern
The name means "party" in Hebrew, and the Levantine restaurant at the base of the Moxy Williamsburg takes that seriously, with a sleek, buzzy room that nods to Tel Aviv's Bauhaus architecture. The menu moves from baba ganoush and falafel through whole striped bass and dumplings filled with charred onion ricotta, the kind of spread that makes ordering light feel like a personal failure. The Basque cheesecake has become the unofficial closing argument.

Rank 95. Raf's
Modern French
The house-made bread arrives before you've settled in, and that sets the tone. Raf's is a modern French bistro on Elizabeth Street with enough Italian soul to keep things interesting, the kind of room that feels like it's been around forever even when it hasn't. Pastry Chef Camari Mick is a James Beard semifinalist, and the desserts make that plausible. Walk-ins can usually find a spot at the bar, which is honestly not a bad outcome.

Rank 96. The Musket Room
New American
Sleek glass doors open onto a room that feels like it's been broken in nicely, with Danish chairs, warm wood, and a bar you'd actually want to sit at. The Musket Room is a fine dining spot on Elizabeth Street where Mary Attea runs a seasonal menu that shifts often enough to keep regulars guessing. Tasting menus come in omnivore or vegan, or you can go à la carte, which is a small mercy. A James Beard nominee two years running.

Rank 98. Yoshino
Sushi
The hinoki counter was milled from a tree that predates the American Revolution, which sets the tone immediately. Yoshino on the Bowery is a traditional omakase counter from chef Tadashi Yoshida, who left a celebrated restaurant in Japan to open here, and holds a Michelin star. The meal moves through composed cooked courses before settling into Edomae nigiri, with a torched mackerel that arrives over a handheld charcoal grill like a small piece of theater.

Rank 100. Casa Mono
Spanish
The kitchen butchers whole animals in-house, which tells you something about how seriously this compact Spanish tapas bar on Irving Place takes its sourcing. Dishes arrive in a sensible order, not all at once, and they're sized to actually eat rather than admire. A Michelin star and a New York Times top-100 nod haven't made it precious. Order widely, resist keeping track, and plan to wish everything were slightly larger.
