  2. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the Bow River and the Calgary skyline from most rooms, which sets the tone for this clean-lined hotel in East Village. The public spaces shift easily between laptop sessions and idle afternoons, and the design has texture without trying too hard. Galleries, riverfront paths, and a strong stretch of restaurants are all a short walk out the door. The Michelin Guide includes it among its selected hotels.

    Contemporary Chinese

A slim, stylish contemporary Chinese restaurant on Laurier where the menu quietly mixes Montreal sensibility into familiar staples. Sesame noodles and garlic fried rice get the same serious attention as steamed oysters with fermented black bean sauce or beef tartare spiked with doubanjiang. The cocktails follow the same logic, which is either reassuring or alarming depending on how adventurous you're feeling. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

    Wood-fired Mediterranean

The gilded logo on the window and a permanent haze of wood smoke inside tell you what this Griffintown restaurant is about before you've sat down. Deep gray walls, long bar, and shiny wood surfaces set a moody, modernist tone for wood-fired Mediterranean sharing plates. The kitchen leans heavily on local and plant-forward produce, with fire as the organizing principle. A Michelin Selected Restaurant.

  29. The striped black-and-white awning marks this low-lit Italian restaurant on what is otherwise a quiet residential stretch of St-Jacques. The kitchen takes familiar Italian foundations and nudges them somewhere unexpected without making a fuss about it. Fellow restaurateurs and Montréal creatives fill the room most nights, which tells you something. Griffintown has changed around it, but Nora Gray has been the neighborhood's dinner-party reference for a long time.

  30. Rank 539. Damas

    Syrian

The charcoal grill in the open kitchen sets the tempo at this Syrian and pan-Ottoman restaurant in Outremont, where the bread comes straight from the fire and the lamb arrives in several forms. The team steers first-timers and regulars through the menu with equal care, and the room has the kind of noise level that means everyone is having a good time, whether they planned to or not.

  31. The queue out front on St. Laurent is part of the deal at this old-school Jewish deli, which has been feeding Montreal on smoked meat since before anyone can remember. Beef brisket marinated in the house spice blend, smoked, steamed, and piled high on rye with yellow mustard is the reason strangers share tables without complaint. Order it medium-fat. Chase it with a cherry soda if you're doing this properly.

  32. The splendid red-brick facade on Picton's main street nearly came down before someone decided wine-country tourism had other ideas. A Michelin Key hotel, the Royal is a full-service stay with a spa, sauna, and seasonal outdoor pool, plus a kitchen that leans hard into Prince Edward County farms and local wines. Heritage bones, contemporary rooms, and the kind of place you book when a winery weekend calls for something more than a roadside inn.

  33. A plain façade on rue Sainte-Catherine hides a quietly ambitious modern restaurant that sits somewhere between casual lunch spot and date-night destination. The kitchen leans on delicate plating and sharp contrasts of texture, and the private-import wine list is the kind of thing the knowledgeable staff are happy to walk you through. Evenings skew a little dressier; lunches draw the crowd that figured out the value.

  34. The white shirts and black aprons are not an affectation; the staff here dress like Parisian servers because the whole point is a Parisian brasserie, transplanted to Outremont and running the same menu it has for years. Braised beef cheek, boudin noir, rum baba: the classics, done straight. The arched brick windows flood the room with light at lunch and turn it into a glowing fishbowl after dark. The wine list leans Burgundy and Rhône.

    Italian Coffee Shop

This is a neighborhood bakery-cafe on a leafy corner of Limoilou, the kind of place where a black garlic scone layered with turnip greens counts as a perfectly normal thing to buy. The pastry counter leans vegan-friendly and a little experimental, and the lunch specials rotate. There are high chairs for the small people and tiny tables for the grown-up ones, who can drift into the late-afternoon soup and salad deal with a glass of something sparkling.

  38. Nineteen rooms on the Bow River in Kensington, which already tells you this boutique hotel has a point of view. Ten-foot ceilings, curated art, and lighting that doesn't make you feel like you're being interrogated. Some rooms come with fireplaces or balconies. Outside, the neighborhood delivers independent cafés, galleries, and riverside paths, the kind of blocks that make a city feel like itself. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

  40. Finding a seat at this perpetually packed Spanish tapas bar on East Seventh requires luck, persistence, or both. The room runs on the warm, slightly chaotic energy of a good Madrid bodega, with conservas lined up alongside the fritos and raciones. Rare Spanish wines are the move, and the servers know them well enough to steer you right. A Michelin Selected pick that draws a neighborhood crowd happy to wait.

  42. A converted theatre in rural Quebec, where the chef grows around fifty varieties of organic vegetables, herbs, and spices on-site and turns them into a modern, multi-course set menu. Scallops from the Îles-de-la-Madeleine and local Arctic char round things out. The kitchen opens onto a bright, simply dressed dining room, and the welcome is the kind that makes you feel less like a tourist and more like a neighbor.

  43. Tadoussac sits where the Saguenay Fjord pours into the St. Lawrence, and the kitchen leans hard into that geography. This is a tasting-menu restaurant open only a few months a year, built around two tracks: one follows the land, with garden vegetables, foraged plants, and game; the other follows the river, with snow crab, lobster, and halibut. The seasoning stays spare so the ingredients do the talking, which takes some confidence when your ingredients are this specific to a place.

  44. Rank 553. Chez Truchon

    Modern French

An old stone house in Pointe-au-Pic, converted into an inn with a restaurant that reads like a love letter to Charlevoix's larder. Duck, lamb, smoked sturgeon, oyster mushrooms, local cheese, all sourced within a short drive, then shaped into modern French cooking with a terroir twist. The onion soup made with beer and local cheese is a good argument for the whole project. Sunday brunch brings an extended wine list into the picture.

  45. Exposed brick, a long counter, and bistro tables in an industrial loft in the old part of Trois-Rivières: this convivial neighbourhood bistro runs on sharing plates built around local produce. 46. Rank 553. Ferreira

    Portuguese

A long bar tiled in azulejos anchors this polished Portuguese restaurant on Rue Peel, where the room feels like it can't quite decide between Lisbon and a Manhattan brasserie, and pulls off both. The kitchen leans hard into fish and seafood, and the wine list runs to some 400 labels, mostly Portuguese, with ports and rare spirits that give the sommelier something to talk about. Upscale but not stiff.

  47. Rank 553. Hélicoptère

    Contemporary Bistro

A contemporary bistro at the edge of Hochelaga where the menu changes with the seasons and the kitchen has a clear point of view. The chef came up through Bouillon Bilk, and that pedigree shows in cooking that's composed without being fussy. 50. Preservation jars line the shelves as decor, which tells you something: this Michelin-starred fine dining room on Main Street ferments, forages, and pickles its way through the seasons before a single plate reaches the table. Chef Gus Stieffenhofer-Brandson weaves Manitoba roots and Nordic technique into a deeply West Coast menu, and the bar crowd ordering à la carte gets the same serious treatment as the tasting menu pilgrims. North America's 50 Best lists it at number seventeen.

  51. Ski-in, ski-out access puts the slopes about as close as the minibar at this large Laurentian resort hotel sitting at the foot of Mont-Tremblant. The rooms lean modern with a nod toward mountain rusticity, and the facilities run deep: spa, health club, and an outdoor pool that stays open through Quebec winters, which takes a certain commitment. Montrealers have been coming here forever, and the village has a distinctly French feel that Whistler can't match.

  52. Patrick Kriss runs the tasting-menu temple ALO one floor up, and Aloette is what he does when he loosens his collar. The room is barely wider than a train car, the menu reads like a diner, and the cheddar brioche arrives complimentary before you've even decided anything. Everyone orders the burger; everyone ends with the lemon meringue pie, which is tall enough to cause a scene. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

  53. Rank 564. Ask For Luigi

    Pasta Italian

A 32-seat corner pasta spot in the Rail District that feels more like a borrowed cabin than a restaurant. The portions here are sized for sharing, which is good, because ordering one dish each and then making eyes at your neighbour's plate gets old fast. Pappardelle with duck ragu, bigoli with shellfish, meatballs that show up unannounced and dare you to finish everything else after. The Italian wine list is short and well-chosen.

  54. Angus An runs a small empire of Thai concepts across Vancouver, but this Kitsilano original is where it all started and still where the cooking cuts deepest. Maenam is a sit-down Thai restaurant where the kitchen balances bold aromatics with serious precision, and rustic-looking plates consistently surprise you. The wine list is genuinely thought-through, not an afterthought. It holds a Michelin Guide selection and has taken Vancouver Magazine's gold for Best Thai more times than anyone's counting.

  56. Tucked behind an old church, this converted rectory keeps its bones visible: exposed brick, parquet floors, and tables made from salvaged pew wood. Candide is a prix-fixe restaurant where the monthly menu follows whatever the market dictates, leaning heavily local and mostly plant-forward. The terrace fills fast in warm weather. A Michelin Selected Restaurant, it's the kind of dinner where the room does half the work before the food arrives.

  57. Perched on the Pointe-au-Pic bluffs above the St. Lawrence, this grand ivy-covered château of a resort has been pulling people out of the city for a very long time. Hundreds of rooms run to dark wood, patterned carpets, and Le Labo toiletries; better ones add river views and soaking tubs. Golf, skiing, a spa, and multiple dining rooms ensure guests rarely need to leave, which is rather the point. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

  58. A working farm and a train platform that deposits you steps from the front desk: Le Germain Charlevoix is a resort spread across five farm-inspired modern buildings in the Charlevoix countryside. The 145 rooms are contemporary and comfortable, which the sheep grazing nearby seem unbothered by. A Michelin Key property, and you don't need a car to reach it, which is either the point or the whole reason.

  59. Rank 571. Bao Bei

    Chinese

Sitting at the edge of old Chinatown, Bao Bei is a Chinese brasserie where the menu reads like classic dishes that took a very interesting detour. The chef's approach leans playful rather than reverent: mantou buns packed with braised pork and miso-serrano aioli, fried rice built around bitter melon and masala-preserved mushrooms. Nothing here is trying to be traditional, and it doesn't pretend otherwise. The Michelin Guide has selected it.

  60. Rank 572. Le Serpent

A former foundry in Griffintown, with ceilings high enough to lose a secret and exposed brick that somehow looks intentional, is now one of the more atmospheric Italian-Mediterranean restaurants in the city. The Carrara marble bar is a fine place to sit alone and feel cosmopolitan. Crudos lean bright and citrusy, pastas run deep and rich, and the menu is short enough that everything on it earns its spot.

The menu runs à la carte or as a tasting menu, with a vegetarian version available, and the cooking leans into unlikely pairings with enough confidence that the surprises land. 62. Three seats. Two chefs. That's the whole room at this omakase sushi bar on Denman, and the math is deliberate. No gold leaf, no theatrical dry-ice fog, just precise nigiri and a quiet confidence that comes from cooking for fewer people than most restaurants seat at the bar. 65. Rank 577. Chef's Choice

    Cantonese

Copper and wood panels give the dining room an easy elegance, but the room is really just a warm place to sit while the kitchen does its work. This is an upscale Cantonese restaurant where the menu runs deeper than most, with a "kitchen specialties" section that includes wine-marinated crispy duck tongues and kidneys alongside the kind of congee that makes you want to cancel your afternoon. 66. Rank 577. Miku

    Japanese

The aburi salmon oshi sushi has inspired fan art, which tells you something about how this fine dining Japanese restaurant on Vancouver Harbour operates. Miku folds French and Italian technique into a Japanese framework and takes sustainability seriously enough to mark Ocean Wise options across the menu. The harbour view is genuinely gorgeous, and the kitchen seems aware that coasting on it would be too easy.

  67. Rank 579. Amal

This intimate dinner-only restaurant runs on a pan-African kitchen where Quebec ingredients meet sub-Saharan spices, game meats, and native vegetables you won't find elsewhere in Montreal. The wine list is exclusively South African, which is either a commitment or a statement, possibly both. A Michelin Selected Restaurant.

  70. Rank 579. Maha's

    Egyptian Café

The honey-cardamom latte greets you at the coffee bar before you've even found a seat, which tells you something about the priorities here. Maha's is a brunch cafe in Leslieville serving Egyptian home cooking, no reservations, breakfast and lunch only. The lentil soup, thick with vinegar-soaked onions and charred pita, is the dish that reportedly started the whole project. The Michelin Guide has taken note.

  71. Rank 579. Ophelía

    Mexican

Stunning murals and colorful carvings make Ophelía one of the more visually lively rooms in Olympic Village. It's a modern Mexican restaurant where the chef cooks pan-regional dishes rooted in family tradition, and the kitchen's Oaxacan mole blanco has a way of making a strong case for itself. Book ahead, because the place is always packed, and the outdoor patio fills fast on any decent evening.

  72. Rank 579. Park

    South American Japanese

Antonio Park's Westmount restaurant runs on a premise that shouldn't work as well as it does: Japanese technique meeting South American flavors, with 80s pop playing underneath it all. The menu moves between sushi and chimichurri-dressed fish with a kind of easy confidence, and evenings bring an omakase format for anyone who wants the full Tokyo-meets-Buenos-Aires journey. The room draws Westmount regulars who clearly know the menu by heart but order the tuna anyway.

  74. Natural wine bar in South Granville with a list that rotates fast enough to keep the regulars guessing. Grapes & Soda was an early champion of biodynamic and natural labels in Vancouver, and the backbar backs it up with small-batch local spirits and a solid run of bottles from Mexico. The room fits exactly one bartender, so some ingredients come pre-batched, which keeps things moving without losing the plot.

  76. The name is a bluff, there's no hotel, just a warm Indian restaurant in Quebec City with a bar serious enough to anchor the room. The front-of-house team is the kind people mention unprompted. The kitchen leans into tandoori vegetables and braised lamb korma alongside classics like pakora and dal, with a tasting menu that pulls local produce into the mix. Comfort food with good bones and a cocktail to start.

  77. A bistro on Saint-Jean that's been around long enough to feel like civic furniture, Le Hobbit runs brunch until two in the afternoon and keeps going through dinner in a pair of warm, well-worn rooms. The eggs Benedict have achieved something close to neighborhood mythology, and the desserts hold their own. A strong list of beers and ciders gives the menu a slightly different angle than most places nearby. Book ahead.

  79. The blackboard menu changes with the season and the chefs' mood, which keeps the Powell Street regulars coming back to see what's new. This casual fine dining spot leans hard into local ingredients and pun-heavy dish names, so brace for something like "Straight Outta Kombu" before a plate that outpaces the joke. The cocktails are worth starting with. A Michelin Selected Restaurant doing real work in a neighborhood that doesn't demand it.

    Wood-Fired Mediterranean

Stacks of firewood against the dark brick walls signal what this small-plates Mediterranean spot is actually about: wood-fired proteins and serious cooking from the Alo Food Group, Patrick Kriss's team. The room inside the Ace Hotel runs dark and sleek, with big windows cutting the mood just enough. The menu ranges from carpaccio to roast chicken and lamb, and regulars know to save room for the coconut cream pie if it's on.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
