  1. Rank 559. PAI

    Northern Thai

Named for the northern Thai village where the chef first cooked, this packed Toronto restaurant brings family recipes and street food to a room that leans boho-mod and never seems to quiet down. The menu ranges across Thailand, but the northern plates are where to focus, khao soi especially. Everything is sized for sharing and calibrated by heat level, which sounds like a small thing until you're at the table arguing about it.

  2. Rank 559. Parquet

    French

The patterned floors alone could justify the visit, but Parquet is a French bistro with a full case to make: marble bar, forest-green ceiling, wood-paneled walls, and a patio that turns Harbord Village into a small corner of Paris come summer. The cooking runs classically rich, cassoulet and steak frites with béarnaise sitting comfortably beside lighter surprises. The kind of room that fills early and empties late.

  3. A corner spot on Homer Street that slides easily between a quick tapa and a full pasta dinner depending on what you're after. The Italian menu wanders pleasantly, from generously portioned hummus with warm flatbread to lobster and crab ravioli in a chipotle coconut milk reduction, which sounds like a fever dream but turns up on tables constantly. Slide into a side booth and plan to spend longer than you meant to.

  4. Rank 559. Pho Tien Thanh

    Vietnamese

The line forms before the door opens, which tells you most of what you need to know about this cash-only-on-weekends pho shop just off Queen Street. Big steaming bowls arrive fast and stay steaming, the rare beef version drawing regulars back in a way that menus with fifty options rarely manage. It's a no-frills room where the broth does the decorating. The Michelin Guide has it on their list.

  5. Rank 559. Place Carmin

    Brasserie French

A blood pudding Tatin is either a very confident move or a very Montréal one, and at Place Carmin it reads as both. This French brasserie in a converted industrial space runs high ceilings, skylights, and spherical fixtures overhead while the open kitchen does the real decorating. Duck à l'orange and foie gras terrine anchor the menu, and weekends bring a brunch and a Sunday roast that the neighborhood has clearly been waiting for.

  8. Rank 559. Restaurant de l'ITHQ

    Regional French

The crêpes Suzette arrive in flames, which sets the tone for a fine-dining room that runs on hospitality-school energy. Student cooks and floor staff work the room under instructor supervision, so your dinner is technically someone's final exam. The menu follows classical French technique with Quebec sourcing, Gaspé fish and Lanaudière bison moving through dishes that shift with the seasons. Square Saint-Louis sits just outside the window.

    The awards

  9. The dining room of the National Assembly of Quebec sits behind twenty columns under ceilings that make every lunch feel like a minor constitutional crisis. It's a formal restaurant in a heritage building, where the chef draws on honey from the parliament's own beehives and produce from its kitchen garden. The set menu takes its cues from Indigenous cultures, which gives the grandeur upstairs a more grounded reason to exist.

    The awards

  10. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the inner harbour at this polished downtown steakhouse, where the nautical decor leans into the setting without going full sailor. It draws a spendy waterfront crowd, but the kitchen is doing careful work beneath the glamour: the Louie salad with lump crab is a genuine reason to order it, and the fish and chips comes out lighter than you'd expect. A Michelin Selected Restaurant.

  12. Tables at this contemporary Portland Street spot are built with center compartments for storing your phone, which tells you something about the vibe before the food arrives. The shared plates menu pulls from across the globe without feeling scattered, and solo diners can order half-portions to move through more of the menu. Cool, spare, almost monastery-quiet inside.

    The awards

  13. Isan-style som tum made with fermented fish paste is the point of this simple basement Thai spot on Gerrard, and the heat scale runs to levels most menus don't acknowledge. The papaya salad comes with salted crab if you want the full classic treatment, and the grilled pork jowl has quietly become the other reason regulars keep coming back. No alcohol, but the café next door handles drinks, which feels like a very sensible arrangement.

  14. A counter with room for barely twenty, where the chef works through a dozen-plus nigiri at a pace that suggests he has never once second-guessed himself. This is omakase sushi on Robson Street, priced closer to a nice dinner out than a flight across the Pacific. The fish is fresh, the pours run from sake to Japanese whisky, and the whole thing moves with a quiet confidence that makes the room feel smaller and more deliberate than it actually is.

  15. A curtain rises to dramatic music before the meal even begins, which tells you everything about the register of this omakase counter. Twenty-plus courses move from chawanmushi through nigiri made with fish you may not recognize alongside cuts you absolutely will, including otoro and Hokkaido uni. The pacing is relentless in a good way, and the theatrics are sincere rather than silly, which is a harder trick than it sounds.

    The awards

  16. Drums play overhead while chefs break down whole fish at the counter, so the omakase here functions more like dinner theater than a quiet procession of nigiri. This is a high-energy sushi counter with outposts in Vancouver and Montreal, and the room is in constant motion, everyone grilling, slicing, or frying something at once. The price tag matches the spectacle, so come ready for that conversation.

    The awards

  17. Rank 559. Taline

    Armenian

A window at the front lets you watch the chef work the line from the street, which sets the tone for Taline: a warm Armenian dining room on Yonge where the kitchen is clearly the point. The menu draws on the chef's childhood and his classical training in equal measure, landing somewhere between home cooking and something more composed. The room runs to olive greens and feels genuinely calm, which is rarer than it sounds.

  18. Rank 559. Tamarind

    Indian

Chettinad chicken tacos and panipuri shots sit on the same menu as a deeply spiced lamb Roganjosh, which tells you most of what you need to know about this colorful Indian restaurant in a Mississauga shopping district. Weekends tip into live music and dancing. The paneer in tomato-onion sauce is quietly serious. Servers will ask about your spice tolerance; say spicy, then order the raita anyway.

  19. Rank 559. The Wood Owl

    Wine Bar

Wine bottles ring the walls of this small, unhurried wine bar on Danforth, and the whole room has the warm sepia glow of a place that stopped trying to impress you the moment you walked in. The menu runs shorter than you'd expect, with more vegetables than a wine bar typically bothers with, plus a weekly beef special that shows up alongside a serious pile of shoestring fries. The Michelin Guide has it on their list.

    The awards

  20. Rank 559. Union

    French

Horseshoe bar at the entrance, rustic brick dining room in the back, and a chef who once worked a farm and still acts like it. Union is a French bistro on a stretch of Ossington shared with butchers and antique shops, and the menu moves with the seasons and local suppliers. The same care goes into an omelette as into steak frites, and if the floor gets busy, the chef may well deliver your plate himself.

  21. A small house in Sillery converted into a communal table d'hôte, where everyone sits together whether they planned on it or not. The kitchen pairs one chef's deep roots in traditional Mexican cooking with another's French instinct for jus and sauces, and the result lands somewhere genuinely its own. Organic Quebec produce, Mexican condiment logic, European technique: the menu shifts monthly to follow the seasons rather than the other way around.

    The awards

  22. Rank 559. Viaggio

    Italian

The tiramisu lands somewhere between a soufflé and a pancake, finished with espresso maple syrup and whipped mascarpone, and it's reason enough to visit on its own. This Italian neighborhood restaurant in a handsome old building could have coasted on red sauce and called it a night, but the kitchen puts smoked pastrami on pizza and tosses tagliolini in charred octopus with smoked dashi butter instead. A garden-lit deck completes the picture.

    The awards

  23. The charcuterie board here skips the cured meats entirely and goes full Pacific Northwest seafood instead, which tells you most of what you need to know. Wildlight is a premium-casual restaurant anchored in the leləm̓ Village development, with a bright, wood-and-natural-materials room that pairs with Chef Warren Chow's sourcing-forward kitchen. The Michelin Guide has it listed, and the menu earns the attention.

  25. Rank 559. Yukashi

    Kaiseki Japanese

The kaiseki dinner here ends with plain slices of Japanese crown melon from the chef's hometown, no garnish, no flourish, and that restraint tells you everything. This is a small, intimate tasting-menu restaurant where the courses before that melon are elaborate to the point of theatrics, with wagyu, Hokkaido uni, and foie gras arriving blowtorched and wrapped in shiso. The room is cozy to a fault, the bill is serious, and the whole thing feels quietly personal.

  26. A strip mall omakase counter tucked between a Markham auto repair shop and wherever your expectations were parked. Inside, wood slats and careful lighting give the room a calming, considered feel. Fish arrives from Japan several times a week, the rice is warm and finely vinegared, and the nori is quietly serious. The chef's counter is where you want to sit, and the approach stays traditional, a clean swipe of soy doing most of the talking.

Duck confit on pancakes is the kind of move that sounds like a dare until you're halfway through and quietly reconsidering your whole morning. Argo is a neighbourhood diner on Ontario Street where the soups taste like someone actually waited, the fried chicken and waffles show up with conviction, and the servers have the easy warmth of people who've seen you in this booth before. Fat Mao is a noodle shop in Chinatown serving Thai-style soups in a no-fuss room where the food does all the work. 54. Rank 657. De Mello

    Coffee

The original Yonge Street location is a cozy cave of a cafe where De Mello first started roasting, before the brand grew into a multi-city operation run by two Korean-born, Melbourne-educated brothers who came to Toronto and decided the coffee scene needed fixing. It's a specialty coffee shop serving the company's own blends, single origins, and seasonal drinks, with pastries alongside. Small enough to feel like a neighborhood secret, even if that ship has long since sailed.

    Coffee

A turquoise bay-and-gable house in Kensington Market, Fika is a Nordic-inspired coffee shop where the owner roasts his own beans in the back room on a machine he describes as "a toy." The cardamom cinnamon buns and Dala horse ginger snaps are the kind of baking that makes you linger, and the hygge aesthetic earns its name without trying too hard.

  56. A Mavam undercounter espresso machine anchors the bar while bicycle mechanics work the wings, which tells you everything about this coffee bar and bike shop tucked into The Well. Beans rotate through a roster of Canadian roasters, snacks arrive by cargo bike from the original Little Portugal location, and the whole setup manages to take both coffee and two-wheeled transport with equal, unironic seriousness.

  65. Baristas here share tasting notes from their own in-house brewing, not whatever the bag says, before your cup even arrives. This sleek coffee shop sits below grade in Arthur Erickson's Waterfall Building, just outside Granville Island, with concrete floors, light-wood benches, and a single pop of royal blue holding the room together. The featured beans rotate through roasters from Edmonton to Amsterdam, and the Tokyo loose-leaf teas are worth your attention too.

  66. Spun copper pendant lights hang above the coffee bar, and behind it sits the roastery with a Joper roaster imported from Portugal. This bright, airy coffee shop on Oak Street is one of several Pallet locations around Vancouver, each with its own personality. 68. Copper pendant lights hang over the coffee bar, and the roastery sits right behind it, so you watch the whole operation while you order. Pallet is a bright, roomy coffee shop with high ceilings, exposed trusses, and enough varied seating that you can actually stay a while. The pastry case runs to things like raspberry lemon loaf. A long black with single-origin espresso is the move if you can't decide.

  69. Spun copper pendant lights hang above the coffee bar, and behind it sits the roastery with its Portuguese-built drum roaster, which does a lot to explain the smell when you walk in. This is a bright, airy coffee shop with high ceilings, exposed wood trusses, and enough varied seating that you can have a real conversation or quietly work through your afternoon. Fresh pastries round things out when you need something to eat.

  70. Spun copper pendants hang above the coffee bar at this Railtown roastery cafe, with a 60-kilogram Joper roaster from Portugal visible behind it. Pallet has several Vancouver locations, but this one is the source, and the bright, plant-lined room draws a neighborhood mix of loft dwellers and laptop workers in equal measure. The single-origin long black is the move, and the raspberry lemon loaf makes a solid case for staying longer than planned.

  71. Copper pendant lights hang above the bar, and behind it sits a Portuguese roaster the size of a small car. Pallet is a bright, airy coffee shop on Kingsway, part of a roaster group with several Vancouver outposts. The beans lean Ethiopian and Colombian, a long black with single-origin espresso is the move, and fresh pastries cover the basics. The open industrial room with high wood-truss ceilings fills easily with laptop workers and actual conversations alike.

  73. The entrance is buried inside a concrete-and-rust cylinder on a busy street, which sets the tone: this coffee shop rewards the curious. Inside, moss-covered walls and mirror angles that suggest stalactites make it feel like a very good cave. The team roasts in small batches on four compact roasters behind the bar and tailors drink recommendations to your flavor preferences, so let them lead. Waffle donuts rotate through glazes like pistachio spice.

  74. The entrance is half-hidden behind a concrete and rusted metal cylinder on a busy stretch of East Hastings, which keeps the right people curious and everyone else moving. Inside, this coffee shop goes full cave: moss walls, dark wood, angular mirrors doing their best stalactite impression. Four small in-house roasters mean tight batches and serious room to experiment, and the staff will ask your flavor preferences before they recommend anything.

  75. The pain au chocolat in the glass case is close enough to the queue that resisting it becomes someone else's problem. This Yaletown coffee shop splits its identity evenly between serious cafe and in-house bakery, with pour-overs from Canadian roasters and bread baked on the premises. Wood beams, marble tables, and brass-rod geometry on the walls give it a look that earns its following of counter-sitters who never quite leave.

  78. The sign above the door reads "Non-conforming since 1992," which sets expectations correctly for this dark, low-key coffee bar on Commercial Drive. Regulars settle in at the community table or claim a two-top for an hour of work, while foot traffic drifts over from Grandview Park across the street. The beans come from Milano Coffee, roasted to the original Conca d'Oro blend. The art on the walls depicts the neighborhood; so does the room itself.

  94. Rank 682. Pizza Culture

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

Neapolitan pizza from a chef who spent fifteen years in someone else's kitchen before opening his own casual spot on Edmonton Trail. The dough is certified by one of Italy's leading associations, and the wood-fired results show it. Ranked 81st on the 50 Top Pizza World list, which for a Calgary neighborhood pizzeria is a fairly extraordinary number. The staff has the easy warmth of people who are genuinely glad you showed up.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
