  3. The crockery comes from a local artist, which tells you something about how this family-run restaurant in Arnage operates: everything connects back to the Sarthe. The kitchen turns out modern French cooking that leans on regional ingredients without making a fuss about it, and langoustine ravioli has been on the menu long enough to qualify as a classic. The wine list runs deep. Being a short drive from Le Mans circuit gives the dining room a certain easy-going international flavor.

  4. A half-timbered Norman restaurant sitting directly across the square from the ruins of Jumièges Abbey, with a kitchen garden the chef tends himself. The menu follows the seasons through scallops, sea bream, local cheeses, ciders, and Calvados, all sourced within Normandy. The cheese trolley alone, built from neighbouring farms, is the kind of thing that makes you reassess how long lunch needs to be. Eat inside the contemporary interior or in the glass extension facing the terrace.

Two restaurants share one address in the Beaujolais countryside: Chez Lucienne for creative, spiced sharing plates and Joséphine à Table for a wine bar with classic starters and a dish of the day. The kitchen leans toward ras-el-hanout and tikka masala alongside local pours from Mâcon and Beaujolais. Both sides open onto a pleasant patio, and Sunday brunch draws a crowd to Lucienne's side of the house.

  17. A traditional country inn on the banks of the Aisne, just inside Compiègne Forest, with a stripped-back modern interior that quietly contradicts its classic facade. The terrace over the landscaped garden is the move in good weather. The menu reads like an affectionate argument for French classicism: pâté en croûte, veal kidneys in mustard, a soufflé to close. The kind of lunch that makes you wonder why anyone ever bothered with trends.

  21. A terrace that seems to hover over the River Erdre, with a fairytale château directly across the water, sets the scene at this modern restaurant on the outskirts of Nantes. The dining room's floor-to-ceiling windows make the view just as compelling when the weather turns. The cooking leans Scandinavian in places, the wine list runs deep, and the countryside around it stays genuinely unspoiled.

  26. Stone walls, exposed beams, antique silverware, and copper moulds on the walls: this tucked-away country restaurant outside the village operates like a very stylish time capsule. The kitchen garden drives a single set menu, the same at lunch and dinner, with a choice between meat and vegetarian, updated as the seasons turn. The kind of meal that makes you wonder why anyone bothers with options.

  27. A family restaurant in a small Alsatian village, where the menu reads like a field guide to the region: choucroute with all the trimmings, zander in riesling, and aniseed snails prepared the old way. The dining room is bright and contemporary, which keeps things from feeling like a museum, and the front-of-house team has that warm, slightly chaotic energy that only actual families seem to pull off. Been around forever, and it shows in the good sense.

  31. Exposed beams, half-timbering, and Caen stone give this modern restaurant in Le Vaugueux the bones of old Normandy, with contemporary furnishings doing the softening. The chef named the place after the Latin term for the Pays d'Auge, where he grew up, and the short menu leans into local producers and organic ingredients accordingly. On warm days, a quiet rear terrace opens up, which is a better deal than it sounds in a neighborhood tourists tend to crowd.

  34. Rank 3063. Auprès d'Angèle

    Modern French

A stone village house turned chic bistro, opened by Michel Bras and run by his niece, with six guestrooms upstairs if the house wine does its job. The kitchen is a tribute to the family matriarch, leaning into comforting, market-led cooking, and the blown-glass lights echo the grape clusters of the local Marcillac vines. They pour their own wine, made by a friend down the road, which is either charming or a conflict of interest, depending on your mood.

  41. Rank 3063. Aux Lyonnais

    Lyonnaise Bistro

Floral tiling, red leather booths worn to a warm patina, and flea-market curios on every surface set the scene at this old-school Lyonnaise bouchon transplanted to the second arrondissement. Alain Ducasse has had the keys for a while now, but the kitchen stays honest to the classic fare that made Lyon's canteen tradition worth stealing in the first place. Hearty, unfussy, and a little theatrical in the best Parisian way.

The red frontage on rue du Dragon belongs to a bistro run by a Japanese chef who trained at Georges Blanc and calls his cooking "semi-gourmet," which is either modesty or a trap. The food is French in bones and Japanese in precision, with sauces that take longer to make than most places take to plate the whole dish. The wine-by-the-glass list is quietly serious, and the staff actually know why.

  49. A converted old stone house in a small Breton village, with a terrace looking onto a garden quiet enough that you half-expect the butterflies on the walls to be real. The Breton word for butterfly is *balafenn*, and the motif runs through the whole room, which sets a gentle tone for the modern cuisine that follows: seasonal Breton produce, carefully handled, with the kind of precise cooking that doesn't need to announce itself.

  50. A small river winds through the grounds of this country estate on the edge of the Périgord-Limousin Nature Park, and the restaurant takes its name from it. Housed in a large timber-roofed room full of soft natural light, it feels genuinely rural, in a way that isn't staged. The chef runs a surprise tasting menu built from local producers and foraged mushrooms and herbs, sometimes picked by the chef that morning.

The original courtroom doors and benches are still here, folded into a chic brasserie in a former commercial court. The menu splits the difference between old Basque standards, think boudin noir and tête de veau, and more restless, travel-shaped dishes, nearly everything sourced from the region. The wine list leans hard into independent and natural producers, all of them available to take home, which is either convenient or dangerous depending on your afternoon plans.

  59. Rank 3063. Bec

    Modern Mediterranean

An old Provençal farmhouse in the shadow of a small church, with a shaded courtyard and a terrace thick with oleanders. Inside, a young couple runs a modern restaurant where the cooking leans Mediterranean with an Italian accent, the chef's Sardinian partner handling the room with the ease of someone who means it. Sit outside if the weather allows, which in Paradou it usually does.

The terrace looks out over the Gulf of Saint-Tropez toward the Alpine peaks, which is the kind of view that makes it easy to order dessert. This relaxed village restaurant in a medieval hilltop square serves Mediterranean cooking rooted in the region, handled by a chef who grew up nearby and cooks like someone with something to prove to his grandmother's memory. A handful of rooms are available if the soufflé keeps you longer than planned.

  63. A Pigalle bistro where the menu moves freely between classic and modern French without apologizing for either. The chef's cooking is rooted in the land, so the produce does the heavy lifting: duck, foie gras, and pâté en croûte sit alongside guinea fowl with aubergine and cherries in red wine vinegar. Lunch is an affordable set menu; evenings open into tasting menus and à la carte. Neighborhood tables, unfussy room, serious cooking.

  66. The chef at this small modern restaurant was once a competitive fencing champion, which explains the precision on the plate. Set in a grey-stone corner building in the heart of Saint-Malo, it draws on ingredients sourced within about 50 kilometres, so the menu tilts heavily toward Breton seafood. Lunch is the more approachable entry point; evenings shift toward hand-dived scallops and line-caught fish.

  67. Rank 3063. Beurre Noisette

    Modern French

A converted village school in golden Beaujolais limestone country, now a cozy neighborhood restaurant where the menu follows the market and the prices won't hurt. Tables fill up, so booking ahead is not optional so much as assumed by everyone involved.

  76. Bay windows pull afternoon light across pale wood and exposed beams at this bistro on a Norman-inflected Breton estate. The chef behind the fine dining restaurant upstairs oversees the menu here, which means foie gras and spider crab appear at bistro prices. 85. Rank 3063. Bistrot Loiseau du Morvan

    Traditional French

The rotunda dining room has old terracotta floors, a timber ceiling, and enough Burgundy swagger to make you feel underdressed in linen. This is the casual bistro counterpart to the Loiseau family's fine-dining institution across the way, which means the cooking leans into regional classics, eggs in red wine sauce, chicken à la Gaston Gérard, the kind of food that earns its place by tasting exactly like it should. 99. Rank 3063. Bon Kushikatsu

    Osaka Japanese

Kushikatsu is the Osaka street-food tradition of breaded, deep-fried skewers, and this small spot on rue Jean-Pierre-Timbaud takes it seriously. The format is simple, the execution less so: foie gras flambéed in Japanese whisky turns up alongside wagyu beef and shiitake stuffed with ginger chicken. An evening omakase menu runs the full range; lunch keeps things shorter and easier on the wallet. Quietly stylish, unhurried service, and a room that fills with people who came back.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
