Cuisines

  1. Rank 160. Vigneron

    Contemporary French

A sliver of a room in Roma Norte, all dark wood and candlelight, with just enough tables that you'll feel like you got in on something. Vigneron is a contemporary French restaurant where the menu stays short and the wine list, mostly European, runs long. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks: this is the kind of cooking that shows off without announcing itself. Share everything you can.

  2. The restaurant at Chablé Yucatán, about 45 minutes outside Mérida, where the herbs and vegetables on your plate were growing in the hotel's Mayan gardens that morning. Jorge Vallejo, the chef behind Mexico City's Quintonil, shapes the menu, with a Quintonil alumnus running the kitchen day to day. It's a fine dining room with a genuine sense of place, and the kind of table you plan a trip around rather than stumble into.

  3. Rank 208. Nicos

    Mexican

An old-school institution in Claveria that started, as the story goes, when a customer spotted the staff eating something too good to keep off a menu. Now the founder's son runs the kitchen, turning out a tasting menu of classic Mexican cooking in a room that feels like a neighborhood restaurant that just happens to have been packed for generations. Warm, unhurried, and a long way from the tourist trail.

  4. Rank 209. Ticuchi

    Oaxacan

The entrance opens onto a comal set into the kitchen, so the smoke hits you before you've found a seat. Enrique Olvera's mezcal-and-snacks bar in Polanco leans Oaxacan, with a drinks list that runs from tequila through bacanora and sotol into rare mezcals most places wouldn't stock. The food is mostly vegetables and small bites, the kind of snacky, shareable things designed to give you a reason to order one more pour.

  8. Celia Florián's mole negro, black as char and smoky down to the bone, is the dish that keeps this Oaxacan restaurant on everyone's list. The mole runs through the whole menu, pooled under enchiladas, folded into empanadas, paired with plantains. Florián learned to cook from her mother and grandmother on a farm outside the city, and the recipes carry that lineage. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a room this serious about tradition.

  9. Rank 215. Kaito del Valle

    Japanese Cocktail Bar

Neon kanji on the walls, sake threading through nearly every cocktail on the menu, custom glassware on every table: this Japanese cocktail bar in Juárez commits to the bit without feeling like a theme park. Sit down, order something from a list that leans hard on East Asian flavors, and let okonomiyaki or a katsu sando arrive alongside. It landed at number 25 on North America's 50 Best Bars in 2026.

  10. Rank 218. Bakéa

    Basque French

  11. Rank 218. Ramen Deigo

    Japanese Noodle Shop

  14. Rank 222. Autor

    Contemporary Mexican

Two tasting menus anchor this contemporary Mexican fine dining room inside the Conrad Tulum, one vegetarian, one rooted in ancient local tradition. The kitchen moves with confidence through both, pairing clean technique with ingredients that feel genuinely of this region. The wine list pulls from Mexican producers alongside European and Champagne selections. A Michelin Selected restaurant that also holds AAA Five Diamonds, it's the kind of place that earns a reservation before you land.

  15. A pianist plays while waiters glide past in a room that has clearly decided romance is nonnegotiable. This is formal French fine dining inside a Cancún resort, built around foie gras, black truffle, lobster, and caviar, the whole luxurious lineup. The desserts lean modern against classic technique. Afterward, the lounge takes over with live entertainment and nightcaps. It holds an AAA Five Diamond distinction.

  16. The signature beef broth soup has been on the menu forever, and no one is changing it. This old-school cantina on Chapultepec runs on mahogany paneling, power-lunch tequila rounds, and formal family gatherings that have probably occupied the same table for decades. The menu reads like a time capsule of midcentury Mexican dining, heavy on braised tongue, hearts of palm, and salt-baked fish. Dress up; the room expects it.

  17. Bamboo towers over the courtyard at this Thai restaurant in Roma Norte, where woven pendants and trailing vines make the setting feel genuinely removed from the street outside. Chef Somsri Raksamran tends her own herb garden and harvests to order, which shows in the green curry's brightness. The menu covers Thailand's northeast, central plains, and south, and holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand for the trouble.

  18. Rank 229. BEKEB

    Plant-driven Cocktail Bar

The bar's name comes from the Tzotzil word for "seed," and that's not just branding. Bekeb is a plant-driven cocktail bar in San Miguel de Allende that builds its menu around Mexican produce and spirits, with a non-alcoholic list treated as seriously as the rest. Ranked 24th on North America's 50 Best Bars, it draws the kind of crowd that comes to drink deliberately rather than just drink.

  19. Rank 230. Meroma

    Contemporary Mediterranean

A small bar spills onto Calle de Colima at street level, and you're meant to linger there with a drink before heading upstairs to the dining room, which is cozy, neutral-toned, and quietly confident. The husband-and-wife team behind Meroma keeps the menu seasonal and the sourcing deliberate, turning out the kind of elegant, composed plates that make Roma Norte feel like it's doing something right. An old-school institution this is not, but it eats like one.

  20. Rank 231. Flora's Field Kitchen

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

A working organic farm outside San José del Cabo that grows its own produce, raises chickens, runs an onsite butcher program, and bakes every loaf of bread on the premises. The restaurant sits among mango trees alongside a wine and coffee bar and a few shops, all of it family run. The menu is casual and generous, leaning toward flatbreads, salads, and hearty mains. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and a spot on Mexico's Best 100.

  21. Rank 232. Mezcal

    Mexican

The patio heaters keep the ocean chill at bay while the Pacific does its thing just beyond the railing. This is fine dining inside the Montage Los Cabos, built around a tasting menu that traces Mexico's regional mercado tradition, with an à la carte path for the less committed. Wines are sourced across Mexico, and the cooking follows suit, never straying far from its roots. A Michelin Selected Restaurant and on Mexico's Best 100 list.

  22. Rank 233. Galea

    Italian

A corner spot in Roma Norte with a terrace out front and a wood-lined interior that splits the difference between a Roman trattoria and something newer. Galea is a small, easygoing Italian restaurant with a Michelin Bib Gourmand, where the menu stays focused and the pasta comes in half portions so you can order two without the guilt. Daily specials and crudo are worth asking about, and the locally priced tabs explain why the regulars are always already there.

  23. Rank 233. Pargot

    Mexican

  24. Rank 233. Raíz

    Contemporary Mexican

Tucked into the ground floor of a residential building in Polanco, Raíz is a fine dining spot where corn and its relatives anchor a menu of contemporary Mexican cooking. The room is quiet enough that you notice the food, which is the point. A tasting menu is the move here, and the kitchen earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand threading deep, familiar flavors through each composed course. Bring someone who actually pays attention at the table.

  25. Stone-block courtyard, old-growth trees, ivy-wrapped columns, and a wrap-around terrace before you've even looked at the menu. El Tigre Silencioso is a cantina in Roma Norte where the setting does a lot of the talking and the kitchen answers back with creative Mexican cooking that likes unexpected combinations. The open kitchen and corner bar keep things loose, and the crowd tends to dress like they've been here before.

  26. Rank 243. Hugo

    Contemporary Wine Bar

Hugo is a natural wine bar in Roma Norte that feels like a Lower East Side transplant with better weather, run by a couple of former New Yorkers. The list leans toward bottles from Valle de Guadalupe, and the small plates stay simple, though there's a roasted chicken that tends to follow people home. Reserve ahead, or arrive at the hour your grandparents eat dinner.

  27. Rank 246. Azul

    Oaxacan

Candles strung through courtyard trees and a retractable roof overhead put the room somewhere between outside and ceremony before you've ordered a thing. Azul is a Mexican restaurant where the chef has spent a career documenting traditional recipes, and the menu reads like that research made edible: cochinita pibil, black mole from Oaxaca, classic guacamole. No experimental flourishes, no modernist detours, just regional comfort food cooked straight.

  28. Rank 246. Havre 77

    French

  29. Rank 248. Gruta Ehden

    Middle Eastern

  30. Rank 248. Los Danzantes

    Contemporary Mexican

Set in a historic building on the edge of Coyoacán's main plaza, Los Danzantes is a contemporary Mexican restaurant that draws a steady crowd of locals and travelers alike. The kitchen leans into regional technique, and some dishes have held their spot on the menu for over two decades, which in this city is its own kind of argument. A sister restaurant operates in Oaxaca under the same name but runs its own entirely separate menu.

  31. Rank 248. Manzanilla

    Mexican

The carved wood bar anchoring the dining room is ornate enough to stop you mid-sentence, and the courtyard beyond it makes Ensenada feel very far from the rest of Baja. This is a full-service Mexican restaurant from a duo who've been fixtures of the local scene forever, pouring Valle de Guadalupe wines alongside classic cocktails. The kitchen keeps things unfussy but sharp, and the crème brûlée rotates daily, sometimes finished with fig leaves from the garden out back.

  32. Rank 248. Suntory

    Traditional Japanese

  33. Rank 266. Limosneros

    Mexican

Huichol embroidery, Puebla talavera tiles, and mirrors from Tlayacapan cover the walls of this sit-down Mexican restaurant in the Centro Histórico, the remnants of an old fountain still standing in the entrance hall. The kitchen revives pre-modern recipes with a light contemporary hand, and the taco tasting menu, which ends on something sweet, is a genuinely unusual way to eat your way through it. A Michelin Selected restaurant that earns its place in any serious Mexico City itinerary.

  34. Thatched roof, open air, a grove of trees overhead, and a menu that traces its flavors back to the chef's grandmother's kitchen. This outdoor Mexican restaurant in Barrio de Xochimilco leans into Oaxacan tradition without getting stuck there, folding mole coloradito into stuffed plantains and keeping the comal near the entrance busy with memelas and tetelas. The Michelin Guide has it on their list, which means the secret is out on the oasis.

  35. Rank 269. Arturo's Restaurant

    Classic French

  36. Rank 269. Bruna

    Fusion Mexican

Black-and-white parquet floors beneath an art gallery roof set the mood at Bruna, a Mexican-fusion restaurant in Guadalajara's Lafayette neighborhood where the decor is flamboyant and the tables are hard to get. The chef pulls from street food stalls and family recipes, running much of it through a wood-fired grill. Habanero ice cream with cactus jelly for dessert is the kind of move that earns a spot on Mexico's Best 100 Restaurants list.

  37. Stacks of mesquite wood line the walls like shelves in some pyromaniac's library, doing double duty as decor and a clear statement of intent. This live-fire contemporary restaurant in San José del Cabo runs a shareable menu of vegetables, seafood, and what the kitchen cheerfully calls "black market" meats, tongue and sweetbread among them. A tasting menu is there if you want the full tour. Bring your hands; the food expects them.

  38. The cooking here comes from Tabasco, not the tourist version of Mexican food but a regional tradition most visitors never encounter. Carmela y Sal is a fine dining room where the chef mines her home state for dishes that feel personal rather than performed. The space is warm and modern, the staff genuinely attentive, and the menu roams into territory broccoli with black piquin chili has no business being this interesting in.

  39. Rank 269. Comal

    Mexican

The walk to get here is half the experience: you swing past lounge chairs and an oceanfront walkway before landing at this open-air contemporary Mexican restaurant inside the Chileno Bay Resort. The kitchen ranges across Mexico's regional traditions with some South American pull, so the menu has range without feeling scattered. A ceviche riff with octopus, pork belly, and plantain tortillas gives you a sense of how it thinks.

  40. Rank 269. Costa Guadiana

    Contemporary Mexican

  41. Rank 269. Criollo

    Oaxacan

Dinner here happens under a canopy of Edison bulbs and actual trees, with candles on the wood tables and incense in the air, all of it concrete and calm inside a UNESCO heritage guest house. Enrique Olvera is a name worth knowing, and he and chef Luis Arellano run a tasting menu rooted in traditional Oaxacan recipes and local ingredients. The birds are not ambient sound; they live here.

  42. Rank 269. Crudo

    Fusion Japanese

An omakase counter in the middle of Oaxaca, where a chef fuses Japanese technique with local ingredients in ways that manage to feel neither forced nor like a gimmick. Kampachi arrives with nixtamalized papaya; an eel handroll gets a smoky-sweet agave pulp dressing. The menu runs light, but the combinations stick with you. Fellow travelers tend to fill the seats, since locals haven't quite caught on yet, which means walk-in odds are better than they should be.

  43. Rank 269. Deckman's en el Mogor

    Contemporary Mexican

A live-fire kitchen sits open-air at the center of everything here, on a timber platform shaded by trees on a Baja wine country estate. Drew Deckman runs a contemporary Mexican kitchen with a serious sustainability streak, the kind where soft-shell crab meets Pilsner foam and short rib arrives legitimately hearty. The setting, strung with cafe lights over the vineyard, does a lot of the work before the food even arrives.

  44. Rank 269. Eloise

    French

  45. Rank 269. Entremar

    Seafood

The terrace seats fill first, tucked under awnings and ringed with plants, but the back row on the first floor overlooking Plaza Uruguay runs a close second. This is a seafood restaurant in Polanco where the pescado a la talla arrives split down the middle, one half red sauce, one half green, and looking almost too composed to eat. The aguachile comes in red or green too, and the red is not a suggestion.

  46. A bull's head greets you at the door, which is one way to make the menu clear before you've even sat down. This is a Spanish tapas bar in Polanco, modeled on the kind of place in Madrid where nobody eats alone and the anchovies come on toast with oil and tomato because they don't need to be anything more complicated than that. Classic patatas bravas, gambas al ajillo, flan, everything sized for the table.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
