  1. Rank 444. Maison Cachée

    Modern French

The half-timbered building has been an inn, a crêperie, and apparently a canvas for sculpted stone faces since before anyone's grandfather was born. Now it's a relaxed bistro where the team, trained through the Ducasse and Pic school of things, turns out what they call "pastoral" cooking, earthy and spice-warmed, at prices that won't require a second look at the bill. The Michelin Guide has given it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks.

  3. A bistro set inside the Les Verdots wine estate, with a travertine terrace looking out over the vines. Thierry Marx runs the kitchen here, pairing classic French bistro cooking with the kind of sideways thinking that keeps it from feeling like a museum piece. Duck confit shows up with lentils and mustard vinaigrette; floating island gets raspberries. The short wine list is essentially a love letter to the estate itself. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  10. Rank 444. Oxalis

    Regional French

A vaulted stone dining room in a medieval village deep in the Cantal countryside sets the tone at this relaxed bistro. The cooking leans on what's nearby, trout from volcanic rivers, free-range poultry, Auvergne cheese, and garden vegetables, handled with enough care to earn a Michelin Bib Gourmand. Marcolès sees few tourists, which keeps the terrace pleasantly unhurried on a warm evening.

  11. Rank 444. Paul-Arthur

    Modern French

The half-timbered house on Place de la Pucelle still has its old beams, which makes a nice backdrop for cooking that belongs firmly to the present. This contemporary bistro is run by a former Top Chef contestant who moved up from the South of France, and the menu moves between squid tagliatelle and flame-kissed horse mackerel without breaking a sweat. The Michelin Bib Gourmand keeps the room busy at dinner.

  12. Rank 444. Philia

    Modern French

Stone walls and a firelit dining room on one of the prettiest squares in the Lot set the tone at this modern bistro. The chef came up through Toulouse's bistronomy scene and landed here with a focused approach: organic vegetables from nearby market gardeners, Aveyron lamb, Cantal pork, handled with clean technique and good jus. The Michelin Guide has awarded it a Bib Gourmand, which tells you plenty about the price-to-care ratio.

The zinc-topped counter and egg mayonnaise on the menu tell you everything before you sit down. Rosemarie is a proper Paris bistro in the 7th, the kind where the cooking is seasonal and traditional and nobody is trying to reinvent anything. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks: the food is careful and the room feels lived-in without being shabby. Named, sweetly, after both owners' mothers.

  19. Rank 444. Rosette

    Lyonnaise Bistro

A Lyonnais bouchon reread for a Paris suburb: pressed-tin nostalgia meets well-chosen antiques and a counter facing the open kitchen. This small, relaxed bistro runs a tight no-options set menu that changes with the seasons and leans on organic vegetables from Essonne. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand. At lunch and dinner, you eat what the kitchen feels like cooking that day, which tends to concentrate everyone's attention rather nicely.

  20. Rank 444. Roze

    Modern French

The name nods to Mathurin Roze de Chantoiseau, the man credited with inventing the restaurant, so the expectations here are historically loaded. Fortunately, this village spot in a renovated old building earns its reference: the kitchen turns out modern, seasonal French cooking that leans toward seafood and bright, confident flavors. Michelin hands it a Bib Gourmand, which means the cooking punches above its price point, and the room feels like people who genuinely love what they're doing.

  23. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the mountains while the room fills with the smell of Reblochon fondue, which tells you most of what you need to know. This alpine restaurant in Saint-Martin-de-Belleville leans into sharing plates of Savoyard classics, cold cuts, regional cheeses, and the occasional venison bourguignon with polenta. A ground-floor deli sells local provisions to take home. The Michelin Guide has awarded it a Bib Gourmand.

  26. Rank 626. Ambos

    Bistro

A bistro counter facing the Luxembourg Gardens, where the couple behind the name (it means "both" in Spanish) run an open kitchen that mixes Thai, South American, and European instincts on the same short menu. The chef did a season of Top Chef; his Venezuelan co-chef did Bangkok and London. Together they cook food that feels personal rather than programmatic, in a room that's friendly enough to make you forget you're in the 6th.

  27. Rank 626. Les Parisiens

    Brasserie French

Les Parisiens is a hotel brasserie in Saint-Germain, all velour banquettes and brass-edged mirrors, serving the sole meuniere and veal tartare you'd expect, at prices that suggest the sole had a good agent. It's a safe bet for parents, dates, or anyone you want to impress without scaring. The address is where James Joyce finished Ulysses, which gives literary types something to mention before the millefeuille arrives.

  28. Rank 626. Mokko

    Modern French

A former music industry guy opened this buzzy little bistro at the foot of Montmartre, which explains something about the room's energy without quite explaining what. The cooking is market-driven and unfussy, the kind where the chef seems to be having a good time rather than making a point. Lunch and dinner crowds pack in tight, and the place moves fast.

  30. Copper plaques on the seats mark where Edith Piaf, Hemingway, and Jules Verne once sat, which is a lot of pressure for a Tuesday lunch. This grand old-school brasserie in Lyon runs on beer and choucroute beneath Art Deco chandeliers, with an all-marble dining room and geometric tile floors that look exactly as they should. The room seats hundreds and rarely feels empty, which is somehow part of the charm.

  31. Rank 629. La Grenouillère

    Modern French

The dining room of this rural restaurant-hotel in the Pas-de-Calais is open to the garden on one side and looks like a modernist art gallery on the other, with a vast stainless-steel kitchen blazing at the far end. Chef Alexandre Gauthier reworked his father's 16th-century farmhouse into something that still startles first-timers. The cooking stays rooted in the Côte d'Opale, even as the room quietly dares you to place it.

    The awards

  32. Rank 629. Le 1947

    French

The dining room is all white with blankets draped over the chairs, designed by Sybille de Margerie to feel cozy rather than austere, which takes some doing at this altitude. Le 1947 is a fine dining restaurant inside the Cheval Blanc ski resort in Courchevel, where tables circle an open kitchen and Yannick Alléno's brigade works in full view. The kind of place where the menu moves at the pace of a long run down an empty mountain.

  33. The wood paneling and black awning on the Quai Voltaire hide a brasserie that has been feeding Paris's creative and moneyed set for well over a century, in the building where Voltaire himself once lived. 34. Rank 634. Bistrot Cul Sec

    Modern French

The L-shaped counter and mosaic floors set the mood before the menu does. This is a small, convivial bistro on the Place du Palais run by a chef-sommelier pair, and the cooking is the kind that earns the word "hearty" without apology: pork preparations, braised beef cheek, artichokes vinaigrette. Sauces arrive in a tureen. The wine list is extensive and the by-the-glass options land at prices that won't make you calculate twice.

  35. Rank 635. 19.20 by Norbert Tarayre

    Traditional French

The dessert trolley is the tell: this is a restaurant that has decided luxury hotel dining should feel like Sunday lunch at a well-traveled aunt's house. Norbert Tarayre, the chef France met on Top Chef, runs the kitchen inside the Prince de Galles on Avenue George-V, turning out leeks vinaigrette, celeriac remoulade, and pommes Anna with pork shoulder, the kind of regional French cooking that Paris hotels usually consider beneath them.

  47. Rank 635. Achillée

    Regional French

A chef who traded a Courchevel kitchen for the valley below now runs this rustic bistro in Bozel, built around sharing plates and whatever the surrounding farms and hillsides are giving up that week. The cooking is rooted in the region, hearty and unfussy, with foraging filling the gaps between suppliers. The room feels like somewhere a local would actually eat, which in the Alps is rarer than it sounds.

A cobbled lane opposite Église St Maclou is a quietly promising address, and this small modern French restaurant makes the most of it. The chef is Japanese with a deep devotion to French technique, and the menu lands somewhere genuinely its own, pâté en croûte alongside yuzu, miso alongside seasonal French produce. The room is intimate, the cooking precise, and the whole thing reads less like fusion than like one cook following his instincts wherever they lead.

  87. A red-shuttered country inn made of volcanic stone sits on the back road between Clermont and the motorway, looking out over the Puy de Dôme countryside. Inside, the room is rustic and warm, and the kitchen runs a traditional French menu built around solid ingredients. The Paris-Brest alone has been known to derail dessert plans made elsewhere. Exactly the kind of place you hope to stumble across but rarely do.

  91. Stone walls and exposed beams at the foot of a Breton church set the stage for cooking that runs more precise than rustic. This is a proper sit-down restaurant where the chef, who came up through serious Loire Valley kitchens, works with the local terroir in ways that feel instinctive rather than studied. The amuse-bouches alone suggest you're in for a long, happy evening. The Michelin Guide has it on their list.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
