  1. Rank 634. Opaline

    Creative French

The couple who run this creative restaurant met working under Alexandre Mazzia, and you can feel that DNA in the format: each dish arrives with three satellite variations, turning dinner into something closer to a tasting sequence than a plate. Lunch leans bistronomy and casual; evenings go full tasting menu, rotating roughly every four months. Tucked next to the theatre, it seats few and feels considered without being stiff.

  2. Rank 634. Orizon

    Modern French

A modern French restaurant where the kitchen draws its ingredients almost entirely from the Côte d'Opale and Pas-de-Calais, the coastal stretch just outside the door. The chef and his front-of-house partner met while working together elsewhere, and the room carries that comfortable familiarity. Expect careful, produce-led cooking with a classical backbone, the kind of place where a slow-cooked egg starter and a riz au lait finish feel like enough of an argument.

  5. Rank 634. Oxalis

    Modern French

The vaulted stone cellar and exposed beams suggest something that was already old when your ancestors were around, but the open kitchen behind glass and rough-hewn wooden tables keep it from feeling like a museum. This modern bistro shifts gears through the day, with a relaxed bistronomic lunch and a more ambitious dinner menu. The chef brought a Parisian pedigree to Périgueux, and the room fills accordingly.

  6. Rank 634. Panurge

    French

Old engravings of Rabelaisian characters line the walls, which tells you exactly why this cozy bistro in the 2nd arrondissement is called Panurge. The chef trained under serious French kitchens before landing here, and the cooking lands somewhere between classical and quietly personal, with well-balanced plates that trust the tradition without being buried by it. The wine list, apparently, is no afterthought either.

  8. Rank 634. Passage Secret

    Classic French

Tucked into a 19th-century covered arcade, this bistro sits inside a caviar boutique, which sets the tone nicely. The chef runs a classically French kitchen with a quiet confidence, turning out pâté en croûte with foie gras and sauces that remind you why French cooking became the reference point for everyone else. A glass-roofed terrace adds to the charm. There's even a vegetarian set menu, which feels quietly radical for a room this devoted to tradition.

  9. Rank 634. Passionné

    Modern French

Midnight blue mosaics at the bar and dark walls throughout give this modern French restaurant near Grands Boulevards the quiet composure of a Tokyo side-street spot, which makes sense given the chef's roots in Hokkaido. The cooking follows the same logic: quality ingredients sourced with care, handled without fuss. It's the kind of place where the restraint on the plate matches the restraint on the walls.

  10. A leafy terrace perched in the paved streets of Grimaud draws you in before you've even sat down. Inside, this cozy French bistro runs across two floors of raftered ceilings, lime-washed walls, and worn bench seating, with a Quebec-born chef sending out market-fresh cooking that leans comfortably on the classics. Onion soup, brioche French toast, bread baked in house, the kind of menu that doesn't need to explain itself.

  13. Rank 634. Pluma

    Brasserie

Tawny walls, cane chairs, and a terrace perch directly above the Grande Plage make this brasserie inside the Hôtel Café de Paris feel like someone's well-funded idea of a Latin American beach club. The menu swings from snacks and comfort food to grilled meats and more composed plates, a range wide enough to suit whoever wandered in off the sand. Ossau-Iraty shows up in the cordon bleu, which is either reassuring or very Basque Country, depending on your mood.

    The awards

  14. Rank 634. POF

    Creative French

The evening menu arrives with dish names that are, by design, funnier in French, which tells you something about the room's energy before the food does. This creative bistro in Rennes runs a chalked lunch slate and a short dinner menu that bounces from Breton spices to wakame to matcha without breaking a sweat. The kitchen keeps it market-driven and genuinely globe-trotting, the kind of place where the ingredients are local but the influences are not.

  15. Rank 634. Pouliche

    Contemporary Bistro

A neo-bistro in the 10th where chef Amandine Chaignot runs one of Paris's more quietly confident formats: a single set menu where you pick your main (meat, fish, or vegetarian) and trust her with everything else. Sundays swing toward roast chicken territory; Wednesdays go fully vegetarian. The cooking follows the market rather than a script, which makes the room feel a little different every visit and gives regulars a reason to keep showing up.

    Modern French

Velvet banquettes, classroom chairs, and mosaic tiles set the mood at this Lille bistro, where the vibe lands somewhere between neighborhood canteen and carefully considered small room. The chef trained at Troisgros and L'Astrance, which shows in cooking that is warm and precise without announcing itself: roast pork with tarragon gravy, pavlova with pink berry ice cream. The wine list is quietly well chosen, and the room fills with people who seem to know exactly what they're doing here.

The owner, cap tilted, beard bristling, greets you like he's been expecting you, steers you toward a natural wine from a friend's vineyard, and lets the food do the rest. This wine-bar bistro in the 19th runs a short, no-nonsense French menu with offal on it most days, cooked by a British chef who came up under Bruno Doucet. The room is exactly as lived-in as it sounds, and nobody there seems to mind.

  26. Beamed ceilings, exposed stone walls, and terracotta tiles are the bones of what was once a roadside inn, and the team has left them alone wisely. 32. Rank 634. Rosô

    Modern French

A long pale-wood counter runs in front of an open kitchen in this quiet modern restaurant tucked into a village in the Marais Breton. The young team keeps things understated: seasonal local produce, a lunchtime set menu, à la carte if you prefer, and a tasting menu come evening. The cooking is precise without being fussy, and the front-of-house warmth makes the minimalist room feel welcoming rather than cool.

A French-Italian restaurant in Dijon's Antiquaires quarter where the menu swings between Burgundy larder and Roman pantry without any identity crisis. The chef is Milanese, trained in starred kitchens, and the room runs to pale, easy colours. Broad beans from down the road share space with paccheri alla carbonara made with proper guanciale and Pecorino. The two cuisines sit at the same table without negotiating.

The kitchen runs on French comfort food in the old sense: pâtés, offal, stuffed cabbage. Fine dining in a medieval building steps from the Palais des Papes, with a terrace that hangs over the square like something out of a heritage brochure, except the food is the point. A monthly-changing menu is the organizing principle at So'Mets, a bright, modern gastropub with a terrace in Beaulieu-sur-Mer. This vintage bistro near Graslin serves the kind of food that never needed reinventing: eggs mayonnaise, terrine, calf's head, veal chop with mash. 60. Le Bon Georges is a Pigalle bistro with three dining rooms so crowded with chalkboard menus and vintage Pernod signs that it feels like a bistro as imagined by someone who only had a bistro described to them. This is a casual crêperie in Saint-Germain built around buckwheat galettes from Brittany, which means you can eat lunch or dinner here without dressing for it or booking ahead. The Odéon branch has more room than the tiny Marais original, plus a terrace for people-watching with a ham-and-comté galette. Some of the savory crêpes arrive rolled up and sliced like sushi, because Paris cannot leave a pancake alone.

  63. Rank 1362. Cinq-Mars

    Bistro

Cinq-Mars is a dimly lit Paris bistro near the Musée d'Orsay, all dark wood and low light, to the point that you may be guessing at your own dinner. The portions run large, with a veal blanquette and a chocolate mousse that arrives in something closer to a fruit bowl than a ramekin. Vegetarians get real options here, from plain French omelets to leek vinaigrette, which is not a given in a bistro.

  64. Rank 1362. Ethanol

Ethanol is a wine bar and bistro tucked into a former cobbler's shop, the more casual sibling of a tasting-menu restaurant down the road. Come early for charcuterie and housemade tarama, stay for the French classics, and order the ham and comté croissant, which Parisians treat as a minor scandal.

The case changes often, so you're ordering from whatever the guest chefs left behind, which is a nice excuse to stop in more than once. It's a grab-a-box, eat-it-on-a-bench kind of place.

  66. Rank 1362. La Petite Alsacienne

    French Bakery

This is a neighborhood bakery in the 14th that leans Alsatian, which in Paris means soft salted pretzels and a strudel with more cinnamon than the locals strictly approve of. There are also sourdough loaves the size of a toddler, tiny cream puffs, and quiches with nut-brown crusts. A line of regulars forms at the counter, and the women running it keep it moving without losing their good humor.

  67. Le Grand Café is a big, high-ceilinged brasserie tucked into the renovated Grand Palais, with 300 seats, a lot of marble, and a terrace facing the Petit Palais. Lunch skews fashion and well-fitted suits, dinner skews people thrilled to have an excuse to dress up. Expect brasserie classics at brasserie-plus prices, shellfish towers delivered with ceremony by servers in white vests, and a banana split that costs real money.

  68. This South Pigalle restaurant has been doing vegan and gluten-free since before it was fashionable, and it's built around wellness, with a menu that goes easy on salt, sugar, and oil. The cooking still feels indulgent anyway, thanks to things like chickpea crêpes and a spelt risotto thick with mushrooms. Sunday brunch is a fixed menu of two savory plates, two sweet ones, and drinks, so nobody has to make a decision.

  69. A Marais bistro with exposed beams, gingham curtains, and a gruff owner posted at the bar like the room's unofficial bouncer, so it looks like a movie set and somehow isn't one. The upstairs dining room hums over a live woodfire, where a meat-heavy menu gets grilled, and the steak arrives sauceless with a wooden pepper grinder on every table. It lands on The Infatuation's list of Paris's best steak-frites.

  70. Brasserie Bellanger is a new-wave Paris brasserie where the wallpaper, deco chandeliers, and red velvet chairs all seem to be competing for your attention. The half roast chicken comes with a mountain of frites built for dragging through the jus, and even the leek vinaigrette shows up charred and piled with bitter greens. It's a proper sit-down dinner, and plenty of those velvet chairs are held for walk-ins.

  71. L'Ami Louis is a tiny, dark-paneled bistro in the 3rd where the roast chicken for two is shown to you whole before it disappears to be carved. It returns in two acts, breast first, then the dark meat, a ten-minute intermission that the shoestring fries fill nicely. Bring a card with room on it, since even the green salad is priced like a minor investment. It's a Paris classic, and it knows it.

  72. Rank 1371. Le Bar Fleuri

    French Café

A neighborhood café in Belleville where the lunchtime regulars know the move: roast chicken with frites and a puddle of herby jus, for under seven euros, which feels like a clerical error nobody plans to correct. The owner polices the clean plate with the zeal of a school principal, so skip the starters and don't leave anything behind. The lemon pie lives in a cupboard wedged between the bar and the bathroom.

  73. Rank 1374. Faste

    French Sandwich Shop

Faste is a croque monsieur specialist near Gare de l'Est, which means the sandwiches here are built from thick slices of bread and so much cheese sauce that cutlery and possibly a bib come into play. There's a mushroom and tarragon version for the vegetarians, and a tasting platter if you can't commit to one. The room is small and airy, with a few tables outside, and it's an easy lunch stop before or after a train.

  74. A cheesemonger's counter on the top floor of the Printemps department store, where the croque skips the usual béchamel blanket and lets the cheese do the talking, on thin brioche. It's casual, priced like a department-store lunch, and fine to eat in your shopping-bag posture. The terrace looks over the Opéra Garnier, with the Eiffel Tower in the distance. The Infatuation ranked it among the best sandwiches in Paris.

  75. Rank 1374. Le Boulanger De La Tour

    French Boulangerie

Le Boulanger De La Tour is a neighborhood bakery in the Latin Quarter, and its croissants are puffed up like the Michelin man, minus the hot air. The crust tastes of buttered toast with a faint bitter edge, and the apple chausson is long enough to need its own seat, filled with compote caramelized to roughly the color of the Eiffel Tower. It's a pastry-and-pavement breakfast, cheap and quick, with the Seine nearby.

  76. Rank 1374. Le Relais De Venise

    French Steakhouse

This is a steak-frites place with no reservations, so you join the line outside before the doors open at 6:45, and the room runs on one question from the waitresses in black dresses and white aprons: how would you like it cooked? Steak is the entire menu, and it arrives under a mustardy, butter-heavy sauce that people argue about the ingredients of. Second helpings come around on their own, which is either a perk or a dare.

  77. A neo-bistro on the cobbled Cour du Commerce Saint-André, where a chunk of Paris's medieval wall stands in the dining room like a very old, very unbothered host. The menu takes French classics and nudges them sideways, with a croque monsieur at lunch that demands a fried egg on top. The servers can run aloof, but the place is loud, young, and relaxed enough for big groups and kids who don't whisper.

  78. Breizh Café is a crêperie in the Marais built around buckwheat galettes from Brittany, the savory kind with ham and comté, plus sweet crêpes for the end. The roll-ups arrive folded into a cylinder and sliced like sushi, which is a bold move for a pancake. It's cheap, easy, and light, but this location is tiny, so book a table. The other branches around Paris have more room and terraces.

  79. A classic Marais bistro with wooden tables, a translated menu, and enough American accents to make you suspect a trap, though the kitchen has other ideas. The beef bourguignon spends five hours getting tender, and the sauce is rich without sending you home for a nap. Service has a certain aloofness that passes for charm, so bring patience. It earned a spot on The Infatuation's list of the best restaurants in the Marais.

  80. Rank 1378. Chez Marcel

    Bouchon

Chez Marcel is a Lyonnais-style bouchon in Saint-Germain, where the manager plays piccolo for birthdays and waltzes with the waitresses before service gets going. Gingham tablecloths, shoulder-to-shoulder tables, and a free plate of saucisson sec sliced thin enough to read through set the tone. Expect rich pork-heavy classics, a gravy with real structural ambitions, and a cheese board that needs its own zip code.

  81. This is a family-run bistro on Boulevard Raspail that quietly leads a double life: ordinary bistro fare most days, then couscous on Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays, with refills of semolina until you wave a white flag. There are no reservations and nobody gets seated until the whole party shows up, so latecomers are on their own. Lines form early, and they come for the lamb shank, not the croque-monsieur.

  82. Les Philosophes is a corner café on the busy Rue Vieille du Temple that serves homemade bistro food all day, at prices that stay out of eye-watering territory. The onion soup is made with chicken stock, which makes it lighter than the usual brooding bowl, and the quiches come in bacon or vegetable. The croissants arrive from a good bakery up the road, with no surcharge for dunking one in your coffee. The terrace is where people linger and watch the street.

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
