  1. The pretty flower-decked patio in a quiet courtyard sets the mood at this modern French restaurant in the village of Chevreuse. The chef's résumé runs through Le Bristol and Georges V, and the cooking reflects it: careful sourcing, confident seasoning, and the kind of technique that looks effortless until you try it at home. A good reason to make the drive out of Paris into the Vallée de Chevreuse.

  3. Sitting on the Route des Grands Crus between Vougeot and Chambolle-Musigny, this fine dining restaurant occupies a classified château where Burgundy stone meets Corten steel and the wine list practically writes itself. The cooking is ingredient-led and precise, nodding to the region without leaning on it as a crutch. The room is elegant without being stiff, and the service knows when to appear and when to disappear.

  4. Rank 634. Le Clos du Château

    Modern French

A shaded terrace under plane trees, tucked beside a château outside Annecy, sets the mood for a Modern French restaurant that plays both sides of the menu without apology. The chef has been at it here forever, moving between braised chuck with Mondeuse sauce and leek-and-nori maki with Thai vinaigrette as if neither choice requires explanation. A neighborhood place that got a little ambitious, in the most comfortable way.

  9. Rank 634. Le Comptoir Boutary

    Modern French

A caviar family's third venture lands in the 9th as a chic bistro with an open kitchen and a relaxed, good-time mood. The cooking is precise and modern, leaning predictably but pleasurably on the house caviar, though the kitchen earns its keep on dishes that don't. The seaweed threads running through dessert are the kind of move that sounds strange until it doesn't. Lunch draws a crowd who know the set menu is quietly very good value.

  12. Rank 634. Le Comptoir du Relais

    Bistronomic French

Yves Camdeborde made this corner of the sixth arrondissement famous, and the kitchen now runs under Bruno Doucet, who keeps the bistronomic faith, noon to eleven without a break. It's a classic Paris bistro, tight tables, a heated terrace over Carrefour de l'Odéon, and a menu that moves between country comfort and whatever the market sent over. No reservations, so the queue is part of the deal.

  13. Rank 634. Le Dallaison

    Modern French

An 18th-century manor house with a decidedly modern interior, all designer furniture, moody light fixtures, and wine cabinets tucked into intimate dining nooks. This is a proper gourmet restaurant where the chef, who has cooked alongside Anne-Sophie Pic, leans hard into local Charente produce: mogette beans, snails, lamb from Confolens. In good weather, the leafy terrace makes the whole thing feel even more unfairly pleasant.

    The awards

  14. Rank 634. Le Dauphin

    Norman French

A former priory a short walk from William the Conqueror's fortress, Le Dauphin is a cosy, atmospheric restaurant that leans hard into Normandy's larder. The kitchen runs the regional classics alongside more contemporary plates, and tripe à la mode de Caen holds its ground on the menu like it owns the place. Crêpes suzette, flambéed tableside, close things out with the kind of theatre that never gets old.

  23. Rank 634. Le Goût du Jour

    Modern French

Stone walls, parquet floors, and a coffered ceiling set the scene for cooking that has no interest in looking backward. Le Goût du Jour is a modern tasting-menu restaurant where the chef's touch runs toward Provençal produce, aromatic plating, and flavors that are bolder than the elegant room might suggest. Around a hundred wines by the glass means the sommelier conversation could take longer than dinner.

  29. A modern restaurant on the Côte d'Émeraude where the chef left serious kitchens to cook the Brittany he grew up in. The room is tidy and bright, the service unhurried, and the cooking leans on coastal ingredients handled with real technique. One half of the couple runs the kitchen, the other runs the room with evident warmth, which is a dynamic that tends to show up on the plate.

  31. Rank 634. Le Kermer

    Contemporary Bistro

The blue door and window frames set against old Breton stone make Le Kermer easy to spot on the Rhuys Peninsula. Inside, exposed beams and a period fireplace share space with an open kitchen, which is about right for a contemporary bistro this committed to Brittany's pantry. Two seasoned chefs run the kitchen, and the cooking is hearty without being heavy, the kind of regional food that makes you glad you crossed the peninsula to find it.

  33. Rank 634. Le Landemer

A stone house with a slate roof on the Normandy coast, where the chef runs a modern tasting menu built entirely from local ingredients, fish, wild herbs, vegetables, and even the drinks. The kitchen keeps its sourcing strict and its plating precise, which makes a certain kind of sense when the sea is right there through the dining room window. Booking a room so you can watch that view twice is not a bad idea.

  34. Rank 634. Le Lingot

    Refined Norman

Candles on antique china, chandeliers overhead, paintings on exposed brick, and outside, cobblestones leading to a timber-framed medieval church. Le Lingot is a quietly elegant restaurant a short walk from Honfleur's busy port, where the chef runs a set menu that moves with the seasons and leans hard into Normandy, oysters, local fish, and Calvados beef all making regular appearances.

  37. The terrace hangs over the Dordogne valley from a balcony off a 19th-century freestone manor, which is a strong opening move for any restaurant. Inside, herringbone floors, velvet seats, and white moulded walls split the difference between country-house and genuinely chic. The chef runs brasserie fare at lunch and fine dining after dark, with a travel habit that shows up in the occasional Asian note threading through otherwise French-leaning plates.

  39. Rank 634. Le Mangevins

    Modern French

One dish on the single set menu changes daily, which keeps things interesting for everyone, including the couple running the kitchen. This bistro on a narrow street in Tain-l'Hermitage runs on organic vegetables and obvious care, the cooking precise without being stiff. Lunch under parasols in a quiet lane is the move, and the room feels warm rather than fussy, which is harder to pull off than it sounds.

  46. Rank 634. Le Millésime

    Modern French

A stone house in the middle of Chambolle-Musigny's vineyards, as deep in Burgundy as you can get. This contemporary restaurant keeps the surrounding terroir close, with a blackboard lunch menu and an à la carte that leans on heritage pork, turbot, and hare à la royale. The chef next door runs the Caveau des Musigny for tastings and bottles to take home, which makes the whole visit feel like a well-organized excuse to drink very good wine.

    The awards

  47. Rank 634. Le Moderne

    Modern French

A retro-modern restaurant on the old Nationale 7, Le Moderne pairs a proper dining room with a deli counter and wine shop, so you can take a little of the meal home. The cooking follows the seasons and leans French with a few unexpected turns, chimichurri and panisse alongside the Charolais beef. When the sun shows up, the terrace fills fast, which tells you most of what you need to know about how the locals feel about it.

  48. Rank 634. Le Montrachet

    Modern French

Stone walls, exposed beams, lava-topped tables, and a shaded terrace over a manicured garden: this is a proper restaurant in the village that shares its name with one of Burgundy's most storied appellations. The kitchen runs to refined modern dishes, and a vegetarian menu sits alongside the main. The cellar holds over 1,200 wines, which in this particular postcode is less a boast than a statement of basic duty.

Beuvron-en-Auge is the kind of Norman village that makes you suspicious it was built as a film set, all half-timbered houses and flower-draped gardens. The restaurant sits in the old covered market and leans into every bit of that charm. The kitchen runs on local producers and the season, with oysters, lobster, tripe, and andouille making it clear this is Normandy on a plate, not a menu assembled from a trend report.

This garden bistro in Troyes runs on a Modern French sensibility with a Breton accent, since the kitchen leans heavily on fish from that region alongside whatever's coming out of the garden. Lunch is the relaxed, affordable entry point; evenings shift toward more involved plates. The Michelin Guide has it on their list.

  72. A converted farmstead sitting at 1,200 metres, with meadows and forest running right to the glass, this is the kind of traditional French restaurant that makes you feel slightly foolish for ever eating lunch at a desk. Modern French

A chef who came up under Éric Guérin at La Mare aux Oiseaux returned to his hometown on the Atlantic coast and quietly took over his parents' brasserie. The room is stripped-back and light-filled, and the cooking is creative without making you work for it, market-driven plates that feel at home somewhere this small. His wife runs the floor with the kind of unhurried attentiveness that most restaurants promise and few deliver.

  92. Rank 634. Le Saint-Martial

    Modern French

A modest dining room in a quiet Black Périgord village, Le Saint-Martial has been serving modern French cooking with deep regional roots for ages. The chef pairs seasonal produce with punchy, well-reduced sauces and quietly unexpected combinations, the kind of place where sautéed snails feel completely inevitable. An extensive wine cellar and a genuinely warm reception round things out.

  97. Rank 634. Le Seize

    Modern French

A bistro tucked into the old town with butter-yellow walls and light wood, the kind of room that makes you want to linger. The chef couple behind Le Seize runs a set menu built around herbs and flowers from their kitchen garden, so the cooking lands somewhere between Provençal and quietly personal. A small regional wine list keeps things local. Upstairs handles groups when the occasion calls for it.

  98. Rank 634. Le Sénéchal

    Modern French

A half-timbered restaurant tucked into an arcaded medieval square in a very remote corner of the Aveyron, which is itself a very remote corner of France. The current family, originally from Normandy, took over from a long-standing predecessor and kept the focus on serious local ingredients, including Vieux Rodez cheese, the region's answer to Parmesan. A handful of guestrooms upstairs means you don't have to navigate dark country roads afterward.

  100. Rank 634. Le Serghi

    Traditional French

A terrace on the old port of Saint-Martin-de-Ré is what draws you in, but Philippe Tredgeu, who ran Parisian bistros before making the island move, is the reason to stay. This is a proper sit-down restaurant with a decidedly Parisian sensibility, built around seasonal ingredients and the kind of indulgent, classical recipes that feel slightly rebellious on a sleepy Atlantic island. One of the few spots here that keeps the lights on year-round.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
