  1. Rank 634. Le Servan

    Modern French

The period frescoes on the walls feel slightly at odds with the cooking, which is sharp, French-based, and quietly inflected with Southeast Asian heat. This Oberkampf bistro is run by two Filipino-born sisters, one of whom trained under Alain Passard and Pascal Barbot before bringing that pedigree somewhere more relaxed. The sauces are the thing: complex, precise, and never quite what you expect. Book ahead or simply don't go.

  5. Rank 634. Le Socle

    Modern French

A small bistro just off Place Garibaldi, run by two people who clearly did their homework before opening it. The chef came up through serious kitchens, and the short menu leans on whatever fresh ingredients made the trip to market that day. The wine list covers every French region without making a fuss about it. Lunch is the move, when a set menu keeps things tidy and the room feels most like itself.

  6. Rank 634. Le Sonney

    French

The name nods to the chef's great-grandmother and to the sonnet, which explains the fourteen-course tasting menu shaped like a poem. This intimate modern restaurant near Place de Jaude is run by a couple who built the recycled-material decor themselves, bake their own bread, and churn their own ice cream. The cooking draws on Auvergne terroir and family memory, which sounds precious until you taste how grounded it is.

    Modern French

A Japanese chef cooking pâté en croûte and duck pithiviers with more conviction than most French chefs can muster sets the tone at this fine dining room in La Doutre. The menu reads like a love letter to classical French cooking, with the occasional quiet aside, foie gras marinated in sake, beef over binchotan, that remind you who's actually in the kitchen. Evenings lean more ambitious, but the warm room is a constant.

  9. Dinner here begins under a 13-meter dome before you're shown into a room of high ceilings and crystal chandeliers inside a centuries-old château. The kitchen does contemporary French fine dining, the kind of menu that moves through courses with quiet confidence. The surrounding cottage garden has twice been voted France's most beautiful, which gives you something to look at while you decide whether you really need a second glass of something very good.

  11. Rank 634. Le Tamarinier

    Modern French

A partially open kitchen anchors this modern French restaurant in the La Pardieu business district, where the chef plates seasonal dishes that drift pleasantly sideways, Auvergne beef with a mole-inspired sauce, pollock with Champagne and fennel. The room is large and light-filled, the pricing is measured, and a Vietnamese street food counter shares the building for when the mood shifts entirely.

A century-old lime tree shades the summer terrace, which tells you something about the pace here. This traditional restaurant in a handsome old townhouse pairs a proper sit-down dining room with a delicatessen, so you can eat well and leave with something tucked under your arm. The cooking leans hard into Charente produce, the kind of regional French menu that makes no apologies for being exactly what it is.

  23. Rank 634. Les 3 Faisans

    Modern French

A husband-and-wife team runs this Modern French country restaurant in the Isère foothills, with the kitchen split neatly in half: she handles the savory courses and he owns desserts. The patio under exposed rafters is the place to be when the weather cooperates. The cooking sits comfortably between classic French instincts and something a little fresher, and Franck's desserts betray a serious past in more formal kitchens.

  25. Rank 634. Les 5 Bouchons

    Seasonal French

Lunch under the arcades of Place Nationale, Montauban's grand central square. This is a family-run modern bistro where the menu rotates every two weeks to follow what's local and seasonal. The room stretches back with a vaulted ceiling that opens onto the kitchen, and the terrace is an obvious draw. The name is a nod to the five family members who run it, which is either charming or the kind of thing that ends up on a chalkboard.

  26. Rank 634. Les Allées

    Modern French

Waxed concrete floors under exposed beams set the tone at this former village café, now a quietly confident modern restaurant run by a duo who trained together at one of the Landes region's most storied tables. The cooking takes traditional foundations and tilts them sideways, with seasonal produce doing most of the talking. On warm days, there are two terraces, one facing the street and one tucked into the courtyard for those who prefer their lunch without an audience.

  27. Rank 634. Les Bartavelles

    Modern French

A city-centre bistro named for the partridges that appear throughout Marcel Pagnol's novels, so the literary theme runs deeper than the bookshelf decor. The cooking leans on local produce, Touraine asparagus when it's in season, smoked trout from a nearby mill, and the flavours are kept clean and direct. A brother-and-sister team runs the room, one in the kitchen and one out front making sure neither side gets lonely.

  32. Rank 634. Les Chênes

    Modern French

The desserts come from the chef's mother, who also bakes the bread, which tells you most of what you need to know about this family-run restaurant in the Auvergne hills. The son took over the kitchen after training elsewhere and came back with sharper technique, so the menu leans on local game, nearby fish farm trout, and regional cheese but lands with more confidence than a country inn usually bothers with. The Monts du Forez sit out the window.

  39. A fireplace in the center of the room, exposed beams overhead, and a collection of cowbells on the walls: the alpine chalet dining room here is doing everything right without trying too hard. This Savoyard restaurant in La Chapelle-d'Abondance runs classic French dishes alongside more playful options, and the ground-floor room, La Baratte, handles the regional specialties in a looser, friendlier register if that's the mood you're in.

  43. Tables on the terrace here look straight out over Lake Hossegor, which makes it easy to forgive the fact that everyone else has found it too. This is a polished restaurant where the chef trained under Gérald Passedat and leans on the immediate landscape, fish from Capbreton's market and poultry from the Landes, shaped into seasonal and tasting menus. The bright bistro room works fine when the wind picks up.

  44. The terrace looks out over the Seine Estuary, which is either a distraction or the whole point, depending on your mood. This is the fine dining room of a grand Normandy estate, and the kitchen leans on the region's produce for a seasonal contemporary menu. Half-timbered walls, plush interiors, wooded grounds, and views that make it very easy to order another glass of something Norman and local.

  45. Rank 634. Les Jardiniers

    Creative Vegetarian French

A converted winegrower's house beside a former railway line turned greenway, with exposed stone, heavy beams, and a pewter counter to greet you. The Belgian chef came up through Fontevraud before planting his own kitchen garden and truffle farm here, and the creative bistro cooking runs almost entirely on what's pulled from the ground that morning. Local poultry and cheese fill in the gaps, but vegetables are clearly running the show.

  48. A former station café beside the Meursault train tracks, taken over by a chef who traded château kitchens for something with no tablecloths and no pretension. This is a down-to-earth French bistro doing Burgundy classics: snails, Charolais beef, blackcurrant tiramisu. The weekday lunch set menu keeps it firmly in "affordable" territory. And yes, the name just means "people from Meursault," which is as unpretentious as the room itself.

Antler chandeliers and wide picture windows looking out over the Savoie countryside set the tone at this hotel-restaurant in the hills above Dullin. Modern French

Exposed stone walls and a vaulted cellar set the mood at this port-side bistro, where the menu lists "pâté Grand-Mère" without irony and means it. The chef keeps things concise and unfussy, letting the ingredients do the talking rather than burying them in elaborate names. The small terrace catches the energy of a lively street, and the team runs a room that somehow feels both unhurried and sharp.

    Modern Bistro

Dinner here is served inside a 15th-century château, where the parquet floors and ceiling mouldings do as much work as anything on the plate. It's a hotel dining room that leans modern rather than musty, drawing on classic bourgeois cooking and very good produce. The sauces and jus have real depth to them, and the kitchen does a bistronomic menu midweek and at lunch that brings the price down considerably.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
