  1. Rank 1513. La Maison d'Estournel

    Classic French

    The awards

  2. A chef who trained under serious French talent set up this modern restaurant in a quietly handsome old building near a church that has been standing since before anyone was counting. Inside, the room is unfussy, with a small courtyard terrace for warmer days. The menu follows the seasons closely, and the wine list runs from modest to serious. A neighborhood spot that doesn't feel like one.

  3. Pierre Augé is one of those chefs who greets every table personally and means it, which sets the tone for this creative Mediterranean restaurant near the Béziers bullring. The menu leans on local ingredients but takes detours, beef marinated in whisky, hake with a bright green jus, stracciatella lifted with asparagus and bacon tuile. His wife runs the front of house with the same warmth, so the room never feels like it's performing.

  6. A stone manor house that looks like it has been quietly running the valley for centuries now hosts a creative restaurant with a surprisingly spare interior, all exposed rock, pale oak, and grey upholstery. The young chef and his front-of-house partner trained in starred kitchens before striking out on their own, and the cooking reflects it: textures and flavors pushed into unexpected combinations without any fuss about it.

  9. Rank 1513. La Mangeoire

    Modern French

The straw-filled manger that gives this place its name still lines one wall of a beautifully restored farmhouse near Lake Madine. It's a modern tasting-menu restaurant where the chef has mapped out every local producer within driving distance, pulling trout, heritage pork, and organic vegetables from named farms in the surrounding countryside. The wine list leans hard into Côtes de Meuse, which is exactly the right call out here.

    The awards

  10. The limestone building with a slate roof and Belle Époque conservatory looks like it belongs on a postcard, which makes what comes out of the kitchen a gentle surprise. This bistronomic restaurant in a quiet Lot village runs on a chef with wanderlust: North African spice, Asian inflections, and pata negra pork sharing a plate with peanuts and ginger. The room is relaxed, the cooking is not quite what the village might lead you to expect.

  11. Rank 1513. La Mère Germaine

    Provençal Mediterranean

The terrace looks out over the vines that made this village famous, which feels right for a Provençal restaurant sitting in the middle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Inside, Belle Époque murals in the style of Toulouse-Lautrec line the walls, a reminder that old-school Parisian glamour once passed through on its way to the Riviera. The kitchen leans into the vegetables and herbs of Provence, and the wine list treats the local appellations with the seriousness they'd demand.

  13. Rank 1513. La Mirande

    Southern French Mediterranean

The dining room sits inside a former cardinal's palace, all painted ceilings and antique furniture, which sets a certain tone before anyone's even looked at the menu. This is a set-menu restaurant in Avignon's most storied hotel, cooking squarely from the south of France with the kind of seasonal commitment that predates the trend by a considerable margin. Two, three, or four courses, depending on appetite and ambition.

  14. Exposed beams and an open kitchen anchor this modern restaurant in a tastefully renovated old building in rural Pays de la Loire. The chef grew up on a farm and cooked his way through London, Montreal, and Tokyo, and the menu shows all of it: local produce and seafood handled with enough creative detour to keep things interesting. Pork with clams and artichokes lands in a different postcode than the surrounding countryside.

  19. Rank 1513. La Petite Maison

    Modern French

A terracotta-painted house on the edge of Cogolin, shaded by wisteria and mulberry trees, sets the mood before you've even sat down. This is a small, intimate restaurant where the chef, trained in pastry and schooled under serious French kitchens, turns out precise market cooking at prices that feel almost quaint this close to Saint-Tropez. Ravioli made in-house, pâté en croûte, careful desserts: the kind of place where effort hides behind quiet confidence.

  22. Rank 1513. La Pie qui Couette

    Mediterranean

Sitting inside Nîmes' covered food market, this lunch-only spot runs on whatever the neighboring stalls are selling that morning. It's a Mediterranean bistro in the old sense, with tightly packed tables, a wine list that earns its keep, and no reservations. The cod brandade and île flottante show up regularly for good reason. Come at an off hour or expect to wait with everyone else who had the same idea.

  27. Rank 1513. La Ponche

    Mediterranean

Perched in the old fishermen's quarter of La Ponche, this Mediterranean restaurant looks straight out to sea, which goes some way toward explaining the menu. Lunch keeps things relaxed and simple; evenings lean into the catch, the local vegetables, and an extensive cocktail list that suggests nobody is in a hurry to leave Saint-Tropez before dark. The crowd already knows this, and dresses accordingly.

  29. Jean-François Piège took over this old-school Parisian institution near Les Halles and leaned hard into cuisine bourgeoise, the 19th-century tradition of simple, comforting, ingredient-forward cooking. Think veal blanquette, frogs' legs, escargot, dishes your grandmother would have ordered if she were Parisian and knew what she was doing. The room has the worn charm of a place that has never needed to reinvent itself, and the prices are surprisingly civil for that postcode.

  33. The dining room is a vaulted Jesuit refectory, all stone columns and tall windows, which sets a high bar for whatever arrives on the plate. This modern cuisine restaurant in Lyon's Presqu'île works through seasonal set menus that rotate often enough to keep regulars honest. The cooking leans clean and precise, letting the ingredients carry the argument rather than burying them in technique.

The kitchen leans hard into the coast, sourcing from local market gardeners and nearby fishermen, with bouillabaisse as the house signature, as fragrant and deeply flavored as the setting demands. The Michelin Guide has it selected.

  44. Rank 1513. La Rotonde

    Classic French

The chic brasserie inside Biarritz's grande dame hotel, La Rotonde looks out over the Atlantic from a room that takes the view very seriously. Lunch skews casual, with terrace tables when the weather cooperates; evenings shift toward foie gras and lobster territory. The kitchen keeps one foot firmly in the Basque country, and the crêpe Suzy is a standing tribute to Raymond Oliver that regulars treat as non-negotiable.

The chef, Mélanie Sire, keeps things pleasantly unfussy, leaning on texture and contrast rather than ceremony. 55. Rank 1513. La Table - Maison Lobies

    Traditional French

A stone manor house in the middle of a Burgundy village, church on one side and open fields on the other, sets a quietly serious tone for the food inside. This is a traditional French restaurant run by a couple who trained at the top before choosing a small village over a big city. The menu is classically French, but the pastry work, led by a Korean-born chef, gives the desserts a particular reason to save room.

  56. A zinc-topped counter, a big communal table, or a table for two tucked inside the kitchen itself: the room gives you options. This casual bistro in Bayonne runs on the produce of the French Southwest, trout and pork and fresh-off-the-boat hake handled without fuss. The chef is something of a local name on the bistronomic scene, and the place has the easy, slightly crowded energy that tends to follow a cook home.

  58. Tucked beneath a 13th-century château ringed by Savoie vineyards, this casual bistro from the team behind Les Morainières seats guests at bare wooden tables pressed against old stone, or at a long communal table wedged among the barrels. 61. A modern restaurant beside the River Eure where the vegetable garden belongs to the chef's father and the menu changes when the farm does. The team trained at Le Meurice and similar temples of seriousness before landing in Normandy, and the cooking shows it, without the intimidating formality. Local producers get credited rather than just quietly plundered, which in this part of France feels less like a trend and more like common sense.

  63. Rank 1513. La Table d'Edgar

    Modern French

A conservatory dining room in the middle of Saint-Brieuc sets the mood here, all warmth and natural light. The kitchen leans hard into Brittany's larder, pairing the local catch with combinations that sound stranger than they taste. The cooking is precise without feeling stiff, and the room follows suit. A solid choice when you want something modern and considered rather than a crêpe and a view of the sea.

  64. Rank 1513. La Table d'Elka

    Modern French

A renovated farmhouse with a glass extension looking out over the chef's own orchard and herb garden sets the scene for this fine dining room in a quiet corner of Normandy. The cooking is rooted in classic French technique, with locally caught turbot and seabass doing most of the heavy lifting, but the odd dashi or raisin turn up to keep things interesting. Dress accordingly: this is a proper sit-down affair.

    Modern French

A stone vaulted ceiling in one room, a glass-walled kitchen in the other: the two dining spaces at this modern restaurant in a Burgundy wine village pull in opposite directions, and somehow both work. The à la carte menu is short, which in Burgundy is a vote of confidence, and the cooking leans into sharp, considered pairings. The chef previously cooked in Dijon, and the move to the countryside suits the ambition.

  68. The picture windows frame a lovely patio, which is reason enough to snag a table near the glass. This is a polished brasserie inside what feels like Rennes' most elegant hotel, where the kitchen leans on Breton produce and nudges classic recipes sideways, buckwheat butter with the bread, scallops finished in fermented milk. The room is dressed to match, with fine tableware and the kind of quiet attentiveness that makes lunch stretch pleasantly into the afternoon.

  81. Rank 1513. La Table de Julien

    Mediterranean

The weekly-changing menu is the organizing principle at this casual Mediterranean bistro on the Côte d'Azur, where the kitchen draws from local terroir and keeps things genuinely bistro-paced rather than ceremonial. Chef Julien Roucheteau oversees a repertoire that leans into the coast, with bouillabaisse appearing on Fridays and Saturdays for anyone who times it right. The room runs buzzy and relaxed, which is a minor mercy given how seriously the rest of Beaulieu-sur-Mer takes itself.

  82. A seafront modern restaurant where Provence and Japan quietly negotiate, and neither side loses. The chef and his pastry-chef wife run set menus that move through local staples, sea bass, courgettes, pistou, with wakame and yuzu threading through when you least expect them. The rum baba is apparently a house obsession, and the peach dessert with verbena jelly suggests the pastry side of the partnership is not playing second fiddle.

  95. Nikkei cuisine, the slow-burn marriage of Japanese technique and Peruvian flavor that took root when Japanese migrants landed in Lima, is the whole point here. Dinner here unfolds in the stone cellar of a working wine estate, with vineyards and olive groves rolling out past the windows. It's a Provençal restaurant in the truest geographic sense: the hen house, orchard, and kitchen garden outside supply the table inside. The chef oversees the cooking while running his own place nearby, which says something about his confidence in the team. Guestrooms mean you can skip the drive home entirely.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
