  10. A tasting counter in Brooklyn where the kitchen uses yuzu as sauerkraut draped over clams instead of a tidy squeeze of acid. Chef Victoria Blamey's avant-garde tasting menu runs about three hours and tends to fill your head with strong flavors that most restaurants at this price point seem too nervous to attempt. The Dungeness crab empanada, built on a Chilean abalone dish with Chartreuse and fermented black beans, is the kind of thing that makes you question your senses.

  11. Rank 18814. Lost Isle

    Southern

Everything cooks over open white-oak fires behind a tattered ranch house on Johns Island, sailcloth and outdoor chandeliers overhead, the smoke visible from the road. The chef grew up in North Georgia and knows his Lowcountry, so collards and roasted clams show up alongside chimichurri and tamarind. The New York Times put it on their 2024 Restaurant List. Arrive hungry enough for the charred semolina sourdough that lands first, and don't skip the carrots.

  12. The back deck hangs over the San Juan River, which does exactly what the name promises. This is a relaxed New American restaurant in Pagosa Springs, the kind of place where the chef traded white tablecloths for something more interesting: an eclectic menu that hops freely between ideas but lands on quality produce and sure hands. The New York Times put it on their 2024 Restaurant List, which is not nothing for a mountain-town spot this far off the usual circuit.

  13. Rank 18814. Nàdair

    Southern

Tartan-print details and jade-green paneling set the tone at Kevin Gillespie's prix-fixe restaurant, where Scottish heritage and Southern cooking share a table without either one apologizing. The menu moves between things like mussels with spicy 'nduja and peach-lacquered duck, then lands on peanut butter chess pie as if to remind you where you are. It's a Michelin Selected pick that reads as personal project first and concept second.

  15. The tortillas here come from heirloom corn nixtamalized in-house, and they're the point, not the packaging. Oro by Nixta is a Mexican restaurant that grew from a tortilleria, and the menu still thinks that way: braised meats, seasonal produce, and a deep roster of moles and salsas all orbit the corn. It landed on The New York Times Restaurant List in 2024, which tracks for a place this quietly serious about a grain most kitchens treat as an afterthought.

  16. A French-American restaurant in downtown Lancaster that landed on the New York Times Restaurant List in 2024, Passerine treats the surrounding farmland as a pantry and smuggles in global technique without announcing it. The room is quiet enough that the food does most of the talking, which suits a kitchen this confident. Lancaster's Amish-country reputation does nothing to prepare you for what's actually on the plate.

  18. Rank 18814. Sumac

    Italian

A paper bowl at a picnic table outside a rural Virginia brewery is where this tasting trailer does its finest work. Sumac is exactly what it sounds like: a fire-cooked, hyper-local tasting menu served from a trailer parked in a field, with ingredients sourced within 150 miles. The menu shifts with whatever the land offers, and the New York Times put it on their 2024 Restaurant List, which seems about right for somewhere this quietly serious about a paper bowl.

  19. Rank 18814. Zeeland Street

    Cajun & Creole

The plate-lunch spot that landed on the New York Times Restaurant List sits on Perkins Road, dishing out smothered chicken and meatless vegetable sides that taste like somebody's grandmother meant every bite. The chef learned to cook in Mississippi and has been running this kitchen for decades, splitting the difference, geographically and spiritually, between New Orleans and Lafayette. Go hungry and plan to eat with a spoon.

  25. Bill's is a counter-service sandwich shop in Lockeland Springs that took over a beloved bakery's space after a stretch as a pop-up, and the menu rotates, so you're ordering on faith. Expect big, sloppy sandwiches, from meatloaf under a coat of sauce to roasted pork on focaccia, plus fried duros sold as Cheddy Ranch Puffs. Nashville Scene named it Best Sandwich Shop in 2024, so bring napkins and no plans for the afternoon.

  26. Rank 18833. Call Her Martina

    Modern Mexican

A black-and-white dining room tucked into the Scottsdale Waterfront strip mall, where the guacamole arrives studded with pomegranate seeds and warm steak cubes, which sounds like a gimmick until it doesn't. This modern Mexican restaurant runs from quesabirria tacos to charred octopus, and the cocktails come dressed with flower petals and charred cinnamon sticks, because subtlety is apparently optional. The flan, cracked with caramel shards, lands the ending.

  27. Churros come in loops, bites, or sticks here, all fried to order, so you wait a minute and they arrive properly hot. Dulce is a dessert café in a Gilbert strip mall where the menu is essentially a build-your-own operation: pick a shape, choose a dip or glaze, add toppings if you like. The plain cinnamon sugar version makes the strongest case that the rest of the menu is just fun extras.

  28. The cheesy masala fries, available plain or loaded with chicken, lamb, or cheesesteak, are the late-night argument this fast-casual Indian spot makes for itself. Gaia Masala runs a broad menu of straight Indian dishes alongside burgers and Mediterranean staples, but the real draw is the fusion edge: tikka masala cheesesteaks, burgers dressed with mint and cucumber. The kitchen keeps late hours, which in Denver puts it in a category of roughly one.

  29. Leche de Tigre is a Peruvian counter tucked inside The Wash, the Nashville food hall where you can order a ceviche and carry it to a seat near the car-wash bays. The lomo saltado sandwich, sirloin and huancaina on buttery French bread, stays neatly contained, which is not a given in this city. Pair it with fries and a beer, order casually, and bring your own napkin discipline anyway.

  30. Leche de Tigre is the Peruvian counter tucked inside The Wash in Smyrna, which means you order at a window and then carry your food toward a beer like you're leaving a gas station with a very good plan. The lomo saltado sandwich keeps its sirloin, onions, and huancaina tidy on buttery French bread, a rare feat in a city of sloppy sandwiches. Ceviche and fried rice are there for the second visit, and the first one comes with fries.

  34. The aguas frescas here run from safe-harbor strawberry and watermelon all the way to soursop and cucumber lemon, which is a solid argument for branching out. This is a torta shop, so the sandwiches are the main event, but the drinks have their own following and earned Phoenix New Times's Best Aguas Frescas in 2024. When the Phoenix heat is doing what Phoenix heat does, a cold glass of something made with fresh fruit feels less like a beverage and more like a public service.

  36. Rank 18848. A to Z Polish Market

    Eastern European

A deli case crammed with dozens of sausages, hams, and forcemeats is the first thing that stops you cold at this Polish specialty market in Surprise. Shelves run deep with pickles, sauerkraut, jams, and imported Eastern European spirits, and a hot deli turns out rotating Polish plates packed to go. The range is wide enough that the name barely feels like a stretch.

  37. Rank 18848. Alcove

    American

Nearly 3,000 plants grow out of the walls at this American kitchen and bar in Over-the-Rhine, which is either the most calming dining room in Cincinnati or proof that someone really committed to a concept. The living wall runs over 300 square feet of ferns, monstera, and ficus, maintained by a local specialist. It's the kind of room that makes you feel vaguely healthy regardless of what you order.

  39. Rank 18848. Alzohour Restaurant

    Moroccan Middle Eastern

A Moroccan restaurant tucked inside a hybrid dining room, market, and clothing boutique, where the same woman cooks your tagine and then comes out front to seat you. Steaming lamb tagines and bastilla, the savory-sweet phyllo pie dusted with cinnamon and powdered sugar, are the reasons to linger. Patience is part of the deal, but the food rewards it. Phoenix New Times named it the valley's best North African restaurant in 2024.

  42. A flat ten-dollar cover gets you unlimited play across 15,000 square feet of classic cabinets, pinball machines, fighters, and Japanese rhythm games, with Magic: The Gathering tables if you want to really commit to the night. The bar runs video-game-themed cocktails, regular tournaments draw serious competitors, and nobody's rushing you out. Cincinnati Magazine named it a Gamer Paradise, which tracks.

  43. The display case here looks like it belongs in a European charcuterie, packed with cuts trimmed as carefully as a jeweler sets stones. This is a full-service butcher shop sourcing beef, pork, and lamb from Arizona ranches, with house-made sausages, cured meats, and a freezer worth raiding. Fresh pasta, local eggs, and pantry staples round it out. The staff actually know their meat and will talk you through it, which remains a butcher shop's rarest offering.

  50. If your back aches after every ride, BioWheels is the kind of bike shop that actually figures out why. They use motion capture technology to analyze how you move while you're riding, then dial in your fit accordingly. It's surprisingly technical for something you supposedly already know how to do. The crowd is serious cyclists who've finally decided to stop suffering in silence and do something about it.

  52. Black Rabbit is a casual downtown Nashville spot with a menu built around one slightly awkward fact about its name. The signature order is the Rabbit Roll, a griddled terrine of sliced rabbit tucked into a buttery roll with Swiss, mustard, and pickled onions. It's a slider, technically, and the Nashville Scene named it the city's best in 2024. Order it knowing that your inner child may file a complaint.

  54. Cal's Country Kitchen is a meat-and-three on Dickerson Road, run by a son who shut down his own chicken-in-a-waffle-cone operation to take over his mother's old spot. The original sign made the move too, which is the kind of loyalty you can't fake. The menu lives on a handwritten board that changes daily, so plan on a line and a lunch you can't fully predict. Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
