The Best Places to Eat and Drink in New York

Eat + Drink, change section
  1. Flynn McGarry's two-Michelin-star restaurant in Hudson Square runs its own Long Island farm, and the à la carte menu and tasting menu both show it. The dining room is tall-ceilinged and wood-lined in a way that reads warm rather than cold, which is harder to pull off than it sounds. Californian instincts meet New York ambition, and the cooking has a playful quality that never tips into precious.

  4. The pancakes at this Lower East Side diner are available until closing time, which tells you everything about where chef Sam Yoo's priorities lie. The room is full Formica-and-chrome diner, but the menu quietly goes sideways: a Reuben folded into a quesadilla, a wedge salad hit with chile crisp. It lands on both the Times and Eater lists of New York's top restaurants, which for a place serving breakfast all day feels like a flex.

  6. Wood smoke hits you on Van Brunt Street before the warehouse comes into view, which is a useful heads-up to adjust your plans for the rest of the day. This Red Hook BBQ shop runs counter service out of a sprawling industrial space with communal tables, where the brisket has the smoke ring to back up the reputation. The Michelin Bib Gourmand is on record, and the banana pudding tends to disappear fast.

  7. Rank 290. Le Chêne

    French

When a pithivier comes out of the kitchen at Le Chêne, the whole room looks, and it earns the attention. This snug West Village French restaurant holds two Michelin stars and cooks like it's proving a point about classical technique, foie gras terrines, vin jaune sauces, and all. Tables are packed close, the ceiling is low, and a curved bar up front takes walk-ins. The wine list is serious and runs deep.

  8. Rank 290. Lita

    Spanish

  9. The flour tortillas are made with lard and cooked to order, which tells you everything about what kind of place this is. Los Burritos Juárez is a compact burrito shop in Fort Greene doing the El Paso and Ciudad Juárez border style, a regional tradition that barely exists in New York. Slow-cooked guisados go inside, pinto beans tie it together, and breakfast burritos are available until they run out, which they do.

  11. A handful of bar seats hovering over a kitchen the size of a closet sets the whole mood at this East Village izakaya from the team behind Odo. Rustic wood counter, exposed brick, a menu that moves through sashimi, grilled fish, wagyu, and things fried or simmered over rice. The food is meant to be shared, the pacing is unhurried, and the room seats enough people to make a reservation feel like a small victory.

  12. Rank 290. Pierogi Boys

    Polish Eastern European

Caramelized onions, sour cream, and chives crown the classic potato-and-cheese pierogi here, and that's more or less the whole argument for visiting. What started as a DeKalb Market stall grew into a lively Ridgewood restaurant and market doing contemporary Polish comfort food. Schnitzel with endive and pickle martinis signal ambition, but the pierogi are still running the show. A casual, cheerful room where the crowd orders like they've been waiting all week.

  13. Rank 290. Santi

    Italian

Michael White's fine dining room in Midtown splits into several spaces that somehow still feel close and quiet, the kind of place where the lighting does a lot of work. The menu moves through the Italian south, from Amalfi coastline seafood to grilled secondi, with pasta doing most of the heavy lifting. Orecchiette with blue crab and sea urchin is the kind of dish that makes the rest of the menu feel like a warm-up act.

  14. The interior runs like a train car, wood-paneled and faintly sweet with incense, and the menu is long enough to require a strategy. This cozy Elmhurst Thai restaurant earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand and landed on the New York Times 100 Best list, which helps explain why the room fills fast. Curries, stir-fries, salads, and fried rice cover the bases, but the crispy catfish with mango salad is the kind of dish that makes the rest of the menu feel like a warm-up.

  15. Rank 290. Soothr

    Thai

Antique telephone behind the bar, weathered wood beams, tufted red leather booths, a neon sign, and a back garden that softens the whole thing into something you didn't expect from East Village Thai. The menu runs long and regional, so bring enough people to order past the khao soi and into the pork blood soup. The cocktail program earns table time too. Reservations go fast, which the packed room will confirm before you even sit down.

  16. Rank 290. Tanoreen

    Middle Eastern

Pickled vegetables and za'atar-dusted flatbread land on the table before you've even decided anything, which is how Bay Ridge's favorite Middle Eastern restaurant sets its tone. The portions at this warm, family-run spot are engineered for sharing, and the mansaf, braised lamb over fluffy rice in creamy yogurt, is the kind of dish that makes you regret coming alone. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  17. Prime beef has been the main event here since the 1980s, with the kitchen turning out steaks at a consistency that keeps the regulars from ever really needing the menu. It's a classic North Jersey steakhouse, lobster and fine seafood rounding things out, plus a sushi and sashimi program that feels less like a gimmick and more like a genuine reason to stray from the beef. Just over the George Washington Bridge for Manhattan types making the case for New Jersey.

  18. Rank 290. Tobalá

    Modern Oaxacan

House-made blue and yellow corn tortillas arrive before you've even thought about ordering, which tells you something about how this Oaxacan restaurant in Riverdale operates. The room is modern and low-lit, with clay masks and pottery that nod to the region without tipping into theme park territory. Mezcal gets serious attention at the bar, and the dark mole negro on the enmoladas de pato is the kind of sauce that takes days to make.

  20. Rank 290. Utopia Bagels

    NY-Style Bakery

  21. Tucked inside the Cherry Lane Theatre, this intimate cocktail bar and bistro from the Frenchette team runs a roving menu that moves from raw bar to steak tartare to fried frog legs with garlic butter, and somehow also a cheeseburger that regulars order without apology. Amber globe lights, curved bar, green banquettes: the room is doing its job quietly. Frozen custard or another round of cocktails closes things out. Reservations are scarce, so plan accordingly.

  22. Fake flowers cascade over the entrance and hang above the kitchen at this Palestinian restaurant on Atlantic Avenue, where the decor and the cooking share the same go-big instinct. The mezze platter is enormous by design, the saj bread comes hot from a domed oven by the door, and the rice dishes arrive in mounds built for sharing. It's a Michelin-selected room, and the crowd tends to arrive hungry and in groups.

  23. Rank 338. Cafe Sabarsky

    Austrian Bakery

Inside the Neue Galerie on Museum Mile, this Viennese kaffeehaus occupies a dark-paneled room upholstered in Otto Wagner fabric, which sets the tone quickly. The cafe serves schnitzel and goulash, but the cakes are the real argument for coming: Sachertorte, Linzer torte, and a chocolate mousse number with far more going on than the name suggests. The crowd tends toward the museum-going and the unhurried, which fits the pace of the place perfectly.

  24. The bar is stocked with tequila, mezcal, and a page of boutique agave wines, which tells you something about priorities at this warm, festive Mexican restaurant on Columbus Avenue. The cooking roots itself in Jalisco's rancho traditions, so expect slow-roasted beef shank served with tortillas and brothy beans for an unapologetically hands-on meal. Portions are generous and prices are fair enough that the Michelin Bib Gourmand makes sense. Tables fill with families and groups in full celebration mode.

  25. Rank 338. Hellbender

    Mexican

The Jell-O of the day changes, but the wobbly whimsy is a constant at this Ridgewood bar turned Mexican restaurant from chef Yara Herrera. Reggaeton and mariachi set the mood while the menu moves between bar snacks and fine-dining technique, the same kitchen handling both with ease. The New York Times named it among New York's best new restaurants in 2025, which feels about right for a place this hard to categorize.

  26. Rank 338. Inga’s Bar

    American

The tin pressed ceiling and flickering candles do a lot of the work before the food arrives. This Brooklyn Heights neighborhood tavern has the bones of an old bar and the kitchen instincts to match, running from duck poutine croquettes to braised rabbit without making either feel out of place. The kind of room where regulars settle in for the burger and stay through the blackout cake, and nobody seems to mind.

  29. Rank 338. L&B Spumoni Gardens

    Sicilian Pizzeria

The Sicilian square here comes sauce-on-top, which is either the detail that makes you understand everything about Brooklyn pizza or the one you'll spend a whole slice arguing about. L&B Spumoni Gardens is an old-school Gravesend pizzeria where the outdoor tables fill up on summer nights with people who clearly know to finish with the almond spumoni. The crunchy, charred corners have been the point since forever.

  30. The sage-green tiles and gleaming copper pans of the open kitchen are as composed as the plates coming out of it. La Mercerie is a fine dining French restaurant tucked inside Roman and Williams' SoHo emporium, and the room leans hard into its own beauty, tiny tables, delicate blooms, and a lunch crowd dressed like they have somewhere even better to be afterward. The menu runs to careful, classic indulgence: consommé, profiteroles, tarte tatin.

  31. Rank 338. Le B.

    French

Sapphire velvet banquettes and jacketed servers signal exactly what this is: a fine dining room where Angie Mar fuses classic French technique with her Chinese heritage in a Greenwich Village townhouse that glitters like a jewel box. The cooking leans rich and saucy, the way haute French is supposed to, and a tasting menu is available for those who want the full ceremony. James Beard semifinalist, 2026.

  32. The name means "apple" in Japanese, which is the first clue that this Greenpoint comfort-food spot isn't playing by anyone else's rules. The menu takes American and European classics and folds in Japanese technique until neither side is quite recognizable, in the most compelling way. A Hokkaido beef curry baked into a golden oval pie is the thing people talk about. Selected by the Michelin Guide, and a 2025 James Beard semifinalist.

  33. Rank 338. Llama Inn

    Peruvian

  34. Rank 338. Lola's

    Southern

The chef behind Lola's spent years doing refined seasonal cooking at a museum restaurant before deciding she'd rather cook food people want on a Tuesday. The result is a Southern-inflected neighborhood dinner spot on 28th Street where the cooking is casual without being simple, and local produce keeps showing up in places you didn't expect. The New York Times named it one of New York's best new restaurants in 2024.

  35. Rank 338. LORE

    American-infused Indian

A corner storefront at the base of a Park Slope apartment building, which sounds modest until you sit down and notice the cocktail list reads like something a poet ordered. Lore is a neighborhood restaurant doing American-inflected Indian cooking, the kind of place where the food is careful without being precious. The Michelin Guide gives it a Bib Gourmand, and the warm service makes the whole room feel like someone actually planned it that way.

  36. Rank 338. Marcel

    French

The dining room occupies the restored Marcel Breuer building that once held the Whitney Museum, and the walnut paneling and candlelight make you feel like someone finally figured out what to do with the space. This is a French café and brasserie from the team behind La Mercerie, with omelets, steak au poivre, escargots, and madeleines warm enough to make Proust feel vindicated. Very Upper East Side, in all the ways you'd expect.

  37. Rank 338. Midnight Blue

    Japanese Cocktail Bar

  38. Rank 338. Miss Ada

    Middle Eastern

A backyard garden in Fort Greene that fills up fast enough to make you wonder if everyone in Brooklyn got the same text. Miss Ada is a Middle Eastern restaurant built around sharing: hummus crowned with lamb shawarma, charred kofta skewers, market salads, and whipped ricotta with honey that blurs the line between course and dessert. The kitchen is reportedly tiny, though nothing on the table suggests it. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and walk-ins can try their luck at the bar.

  39. Rank 338. Olmo

    Mexico City

A cantina in Crown Heights where communal tables and light wood make the whole room feel like somebody's relaxed dinner party. The cooking pulls from Mexico City, snacky and nostalgic in the best way, ranging from chicharrón preparado to a carne asada topped with verdolaga greens and a smoky chipotle béarnaise that overshadows everything else on the plate. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks.

  40. Rank 338. Roberta's

    Pizzeria

The red door on Moore Street opens into a loud, wood-fired pizza shop that somehow became the definitive argument for Bushwick's whole self-image. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the pies earn the pilgrimage: thin, blistered, unapologetically themselves. The room is industrial and a little ramshackle, the staff looks like they're in three different bands, and the wait can be long enough to reconsider your life choices. Order ahead and take a box home.

  41. A whole snapper, deep-fried twice for a crunch audible from across the room, arriving upright as if still swimming, tells you everything about what kind of soul food restaurant this is. Six tables on Staten Island, pitchers of rum punch and sangria on nearly all of them, and a dining room that always feels like a party that forgot to wait for a reason. The New York Times named it one of New York's best new restaurants in 2024.

  42. Rank 338. Soda Club

    Natural Italian Cocktail Bar

Velvet chairs, copper fixtures, and stained-glass lamps set a Prohibition-speakeasy mood on Avenue A, though the menu leans firmly into vegan Italian. Soda Club is a natural wine bar where house-made pasta carries the evening, the wine list skews minimal-intervention, and the whole thing holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand. The room is dim enough that everyone looks like they have secrets, which feels appropriate for a place named after Italian hand-crafted sodas.

  43. Rank 338. Sugar Monk

    Cocktail Bar

A Harlem cocktail bar run by artists, which explains why the drinks feel less like menu items and more like installation pieces. The house forager supplies wild edible plants that become bitters, liqueurs, and amari made in-house, so what ends up in your glass has a provenance most bars can't claim. The room is cozy and unhurried, and the crowd tends to treat the cocktail list the way other people treat gallery notes.

  45. Rank 338. YUGIN

    Sushi

Twelve seats at a counter above Central Park, where the skyline does a lot of the talking before the food even starts. YUGIN is an omakase spot inside the Plaza Hotel, opening with composed seasonal courses before moving into a classical nigiri progression, with faint European touches woven through Japanese technique. Custom ceramics, pristine sourcing, and restrained seasoning throughout, for a crowd that books months out and dresses accordingly.

  46. Tucked inside ABC Carpet & Home, this vegetarian restaurant runs on the kind of clean-lined, chandelier-scattered energy that makes a green juice feel entirely appropriate in a wine glass. The menu moves through breakfast, brunch, and lunch with pressed juices and kombuchas alongside clever plant-based plates. The New York Times named it among the 100 best restaurants in the city, which the business crowd and the ladies-who-lunch set have known for a while.

  47. Rank 364. Atoboy

    Korean

The room is minimal to the point of industrial, which keeps the focus where it belongs: Korean cooking that doesn't explain itself to anyone. This Gramercy fine dining spot runs a prix-fixe-style menu where the combinations are adventurous but never alienating, the sort of place where kimchi beurre blanc makes complete sense by the second bite. Regulars book well ahead, and the team's warmth closes the gap between the spare room and a very full table.

This is a neighborhood restaurant on the Upper East Side, warm and a little glamorous, where Harold Moore runs a contemporary American menu with French and Italian pulls. Steak Diane shares space with sweet potato tortellini carried over from the beloved original. The kind of place you book for a Tuesday because you deserve a Tuesday like this.

  49. The line out front in Long Island City is your landmark. Casa Enrique is a buzzy Mexican restaurant where family recipes share the menu with tacos and guacamole, but the kitchen finds its footing with the bigger plates: braised lamb shank, branzino marinated al pastor, and a mole that appears in several forms and never disappoints. Frozen watermelon margaritas keep arriving whether you asked or not, which is not a complaint.

  51. Rank 364. Dayglow

    Coffee

A former automotive welding shop in East Williamsburg now houses this multi-roaster coffee boutique, where the menu leans into distilled coffee, blue algae, and clarified matcha alongside a hand-brew selection from roasters around the world. The back of the space runs a small craft brewery called Niteglow, so the afternoon espresso can pivot to a draft pour. It reads like a coffee shop that got very ambitious and kept going.

  52. Rank 364. DOLORES

    Mexico City Cocktail Bar

  53. Rank 364. Eléa

    Greek

Whitewashed brick, weathered wood beams, and soft lighting give this Upper West Side Greek restaurant the kind of room that makes a Tuesday feel like a reasonable night out. The cooking leans rustic, with spreads and pita giving way to whole grilled fish in lemon and caper sauce. The menu reads like someone's Greek grandmother got hold of a very good pantry, which is more or less the point.

A small mug of grated parm arrives alongside the lasagna alla Bolognese for table-side sprinkling, which tells you everything about this cozy Italian neighborhood restaurant in Ridgewood. The menu is short and unfussy, running from cured meats and fried calamari through cacio e pepe and branzino, with daily specials filling the gaps. 59. Rank 364. Ivan Ramen

    Ramen Shop

Ivan Orkin, a New Yorker who built his reputation running ramen shops in Tokyo, brought the whole project back home to the Lower East Side. The ramen shop is compact and casual, counter seats facing the kitchen, with a menu that mixes Japanese technique and New York personality without making a big fuss about either. The tsukemen, where you dip thick fresh noodles into rich pork broth and season to taste, rewards the curious. Grub Street named it one of the city's best restaurants for kids.

  60. Jean-Georges Vongerichten started here before the global empire, and the cozy two-story townhouse still feeds the Upper East Side's moneyed regulars like it has been around forever. The menu reads like a confident neighborhood restaurant that doesn't need to impress anyone: roast chicken, seared salmon, rack of lamb. Seasonal, polished, and utterly unbothered by trends. The molten chocolate cake has outlasted several food movements and shows no signs of leaving.

  61. A bar anchors the narrow room at this buzzy south Indian restaurant named for the city at the tip of the subcontinent, which tells you where the kitchen's loyalties lie: seafood, regional spice, and coastal flavors that don't pull punches. The slow-cooked beef short rib, draped in Madras onion rings and crispy curry leaves, has become something people keep coming back to mention. The Michelin Guide has it selected.

  63. Gregory Gourdet runs this prix-fixe inside the Printemps department store on Wall Street, pulling Caribbean, French, and Asian threads into a tight, composed menu. The tilework and green patterned booths are very much meant to be photographed, and the crowd obliges. The duck glazed in cane syrup with tamarind jus is the kind of thing that makes the rest of the meal feel like buildup. The New York Times named the rice and beans among its favorite dishes of the year.

  64. Rank 364. Mario's Restaurant

    Historic Italian

  65. The omakase option is how regulars talk about this place, and the downtown room backs it up with a charged, buzzy atmosphere that makes sitting still feel like a missed opportunity. Nobu Downtown is fine-dining Japanese in a sleek, energetic space on Broadway, where the menu leans into small plates built for sharing. The celebrity-chef brand is global at this point, but the kitchen keeps the standards high.

  66. Rank 364. One White Street

    Seasonal Italian

A converted townhouse in Tribeca that runs its own upstate farm, so the vegetables on your plate were probably pulled from the ground by someone who also designed the menu. One White Street is a contemporary restaurant with both à la carte and tasting menu options, housed in a wood-paneled room with marble and tilework that makes "intimate" feel earned rather than euphemistic. The kitchen leans into bold, produce-forward cooking with a Michelin Guide selection to its name.

  68. Rank 364. Potluck Club

    Cantonese

Hong Kong cinema posters line the walls and a glowing marquee floats above the chef's counter at this high-energy Cantonese American restaurant on Chrystie. The cooking is generous and unfussy, built on good ingredients without making a big speech about it. The XO fried rice and salt and pepper fried chicken pull regulars back repeatedly. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and priced like they mean it.

  70. Gold busts line the walls of this cavernous Upper West Side Italian restaurant, which reads as a deliberate joke at the expense of every shoebox apartment in the neighborhood. The menu runs the familiar Italian playbook, calamari to tiramisu, but the kitchen adds enough texture and brightness to keep it from feeling rote. Generous tables, a big room, and a wine list that rewards lingering make it a natural anchor for the block.

  72. Rank 364. The Lambs Club

    Steakhouse

Black walls, scarlet booths, polished chrome, and a limestone fireplace that anchors the whole room: the Lambs Club is a Midtown steakhouse that knows exactly what it is and leans into it without apology. Dry-aged steaks with a full spread of sauces are the main event, and the pre-theater prix-fixe keeps the curtain-time crowd moving. Inside the Chatwal Hotel, steps from Broadway, it draws the kind of clientele that orders a second cocktail on purpose.

  73. Rank 364. The Odeon

    French

The neon sign out front has been pulling in Tribeca's night owls since the neighborhood was mostly parking lots. This brasserie wears its '80s bones proudly, all red banquettes and buzz, and Vanity Fair once called it "a movie set that doubles as a restaurant," which tracks. The French-ish menu runs burgers to croque monsieur, comfortingly unchanged. The New York Times gave it a star in 2016.

  74. The buss up shut here is the size of a shirt and flaky as a biscuit, which the name, Trinidadian slang for "busted up shirt," promises and the kitchen delivers. This is a roti shop in South Ozone Park, cash and carry, no fuss. The New York Times put it on their 100 Best list, and the A train ride plus the half-mile walk from the station is apparently just part of the ritual now.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
