  5. Rank 3331. Le Chazal

    Modern French

A converted sheepfold high in a hamlet, with the original mangers still on the walls and old meat hooks overhead, makes for an unexpectedly atmospheric set-menu restaurant. The chef weaves local trout, foraged herbs, and organic saffron into multi-course dinners that also find room for lobster and wild turbot, which is to say the mountains don't keep ambition out. The Grand Marnier soufflé has become something of a signature.

  8. A narrow Left Bank street, an old abbey converted next door, and a chef quietly doing something interesting inside a room that's been here forever. This is a proper sit-down dinner spot, creative French with a personal slant: fermentation and smoke run through the menu alongside childhood-memory riffs, like an onion soup turbocharged with foie gras and Appenzeller. The cooking has range without announcing it, which is its own kind of confidence.

  9. Chandeliers, panelled walls, and tableside finishes signal exactly what Philippe Etchebest had in mind: a proper old-school brasserie doing the classics with a straight face and full commitment. Egg mayo, duck à l'orange, pâté en croûte, pike quenelles in lobster sauce, the kind of menu that never apologizes for itself. Diners order à la carte and settle in, which is the only sensible pace for a room like this.

  11. A chandelier hangs over waxed concrete floors in a château outbuilding, which is either a design contradiction or a very French solution to one. Le Clos is a modern cuisine restaurant where the chef leans into rich, precise cooking, the kind where a roasted carrot starter earns its place on the menu. Guests staying at the château can carry dinner into a morning by the pool, which makes the journey to this corner of Occitania considerably easier to justify.

  12. Rank 3331. Le Clos d'Émile

    Modern French

A rustic village house in the middle of nowhere that runs on a single set menu and the conviction that making everything from scratch is non-negotiable. This French country restaurant is a true family affair: the chef handles the kitchen while her husband raises organic pigs and works the dining room. Local ingredients drive the cooking, and the room is warm in the way that only places with no interest in being fashionable ever manage.

  13. Rank 3331. Le Clos de Chevreuse

    Modern French

The pretty flower-decked patio in a quiet courtyard sets the mood at this modern French restaurant in the village of Chevreuse. The chef's résumé runs through Le Bristol and Georges V, and the cooking reflects it: careful sourcing, confident seasoning, and the kind of technique that looks effortless until you try it at home. A good reason to make the drive out of Paris into the Vallée de Chevreuse.

  15. Sitting on the Route des Grands Crus between Vougeot and Chambolle-Musigny, this fine dining restaurant occupies a classified château where Burgundy stone meets Corten steel and the wine list practically writes itself. The cooking is ingredient-led and precise, nodding to the region without leaning on it as a crutch. The room is elegant without being stiff, and the service knows when to appear and when to disappear.

  17. Rank 3331. Le Clos du Château

    Modern French

A shaded terrace under plane trees, tucked beside a château outside Annecy, sets the mood for a Modern French restaurant that plays both sides of the menu without apology. The chef has been at it here forever, moving between braised chuck with Mondeuse sauce and leek-and-nori maki with Thai vinaigrette as if neither choice requires explanation. A neighborhood place that got a little ambitious, in the most comfortable way.

  22. Rank 3331. Le Clos Saint-Pierre

    Provençal Mediterranean

A stone-built inn across from the village church, with plane trees shading the boules court out front. Inside, the mood is chic but easy, and the kitchen runs a single set menu that follows the market, so what you eat depends entirely on what arrived that morning. The cooking is rooted in Provence without being smug about it. A truffle menu appears in season for those who plan ahead.

  24. Rank 3331. Le Comptoir Boutary

    Modern French

A caviar family's third venture lands in the 9th as a chic bistro with an open kitchen and a relaxed, good-time mood. The cooking is precise and modern, leaning predictably but pleasurably on the house caviar, though the kitchen earns its keep on dishes that don't. The seaweed threads running through dessert are the kind of move that sounds strange until it doesn't. Lunch draws a crowd who know the set menu is quietly very good value.

  26. A gleaming spit-roast oven anchors the counter of this bistro offshoot, tucked down a cul-de-sac in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The chef, Ecuadorian-born, runs a traditional French lineup that quietly drifts south American when he's not looking, so roast meats and seasonal family dishes share the menu with a tuna tiradito. The terrace looks out over the vineyards, which helps when the desserts arrive and you decide you're not leaving anytime soon.

  28. Rank 3331. Le Comptoir du Relais

    Bistronomic French

Yves Camdeborde made this corner of the sixth arrondissement famous, and the kitchen now runs under Bruno Doucet, who keeps the bistronomic faith, noon to eleven without a break. It's a classic Paris bistro, tight tables, a heated terrace over Carrefour de l'Odéon, and a menu that moves between country comfort and whatever the market sent over. No reservations, so the queue is part of the deal.

  31. Rank 3331. Le Couchetat

    Latin American

Sitting at 900 meters above La Bresse in a proper Vosges chalet, Le Couchetat is a hotel-restaurant where a Norman chef and his Chilean pastry-chef partner have quietly spliced the mountains with South America. The kitchen leans into local produce, then veers sideways with a sweetcorn emulsion or churros with dulce de leche, because why not. A more traditional set menu keeps the purists happy too.

  34. Rank 3331. Le Dallaison

    Modern French

An 18th-century manor house with a decidedly modern interior, all designer furniture, moody light fixtures, and wine cabinets tucked into intimate dining nooks. This is a proper gourmet restaurant where the chef, who has cooked alongside Anne-Sophie Pic, leans hard into local Charente produce: mogette beans, snails, lamb from Confolens. In good weather, the leafy terrace makes the whole thing feel even more unfairly pleasant.

  35. Rank 3331. Le Dauphin

    Norman French

A former priory a short walk from William the Conqueror's fortress, Le Dauphin is a cosy, atmospheric restaurant that leans hard into Normandy's larder. The kitchen runs the regional classics alongside more contemporary plates, and tripe à la mode de Caen holds its ground on the menu like it owns the place. Crêpes suzette, flambéed tableside, close things out with the kind of theatre that never gets old.

  43. A shaded patio and a menu where Gascony meets Guadalajara, quietly and without fuss. This welcoming traditional restaurant has been anchored in the local repertoire forever, but the new owner's Mexican heritage has nudged things sideways in interesting ways, chicharrón alongside duck neck carpaccio, Gascony mustard mayo alongside smoked, spicy tomato. 50. Rank 3331. Le Goût du Jour

    Modern French

Stone walls, parquet floors, and a coffered ceiling set the scene for cooking that has no interest in looking backward. Le Goût du Jour is a modern tasting-menu restaurant where the chef's touch runs toward Provençal produce, aromatic plating, and flavors that are bolder than the elegant room might suggest. Around a hundred wines by the glass means the sommelier conversation could take longer than dinner.

The dining room inside Lyon's restored Hôtel-Dieu is a former 18th-century hospital hall, vaulted and vast, with stained-glass light and art hanging on white walls. It's a brasserie-scale modern restaurant where the kitchen, guided by Marcel Ravin, leans into French technique with Caribbean inflections. The rooftop bar and courtyard patio mean you could easily stretch one meal into an entire afternoon, which Lyon tends to encourage anyway.

A fountain, a pergola, flowering walls, and a terrace tucked into one of the old village's cobblestone lanes set the scene at this small Mediterranean restaurant. 65. Rank 3331. Le Jas

    Provençal Mediterranean

A converted dry-stone sheepfold, or jas in Provençal, sitting just steps from the church that hosts one of the world's great piano festivals. The chef, who trained under some heavy Provençal names, runs a proper sit-down restaurant beneath centuries-old vaults or on a terrace in the open air. The cooking leans refined and rooted in the region, lamb from the Alpilles, crayfish, quenelles, the kind of menu that takes the countryside seriously.

  90. Rank 3331. Le Mangevins

    Modern French

One dish on the single set menu changes daily, which keeps things interesting for everyone, including the couple running the kitchen. This bistro on a narrow street in Tain-l'Hermitage runs on organic vegetables and obvious care, the cooking precise without being stiff. Lunch under parasols in a quiet lane is the move, and the room feels warm rather than fussy, which is harder to pull off than it sounds.

  96. Rank 3331. Le Matré

    Contemporary Bistro

Exposed stone walls and an open kitchen set the tone in this snug Abbesses bistro, tucked just off rue Lepic. The chef came up through Yves Camdeborde's school, and it shows: a short, market-driven menu that changes often enough to keep regulars guessing. The food is contemporary without performing about it, and the prices are modest enough that a second glass feels like a reasonable idea.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
