  3. Rank 264. Spicy Girl

    Sichuan

Spicy Girl is a casual Sichuan restaurant in Upper Kirby that stays open until 3:30 a.m. After 9 p.m. the menu shrinks to Chinese American staples like General Tso's chicken, Mongolian beef, and fried rice, all priced for people who just want dinner. You scan a QR code, seat yourself, and nobody asks how your night went. Wear whatever you wore to wherever you were.

  4. Rank 264. Sum Bar

    Cantonese

Handmade shu mai with its own devoted following is a reasonable thing to build a dim sum restaurant around. Sum Bar pulls it off with char siu pork, egg custard tarts, and Chinese broccoli in oyster sauce filling out the cart. Monday mahjong nights give regulars a reason to linger, and seasonal events like a Lunar New Year blowout keep the calendar lively. The proprietor co-produced a James Beard Award-winning documentary about opening this very spot.

  6. Each basket of xiao long bao arrives with bamboo tongs and a card explaining exactly how to pinch and transfer without losing the broth, which tells you something about how seriously this soup dumpling shop takes its product. The room is neutral-toned and quietly polished. Six styles of xiao long bao, plus pan-fried buns and wontons that get the same careful treatment. Seattle Met named it one of Seattle's best lunch spots, and the expansion to multiple cities suggests agreement was widespread.

  7. This is a Sichuan restaurant in Sterling Heights where the peppercorns go to work on your lips and don't clock out until well after dessert. The fried squirrel-shaped fish is what regulars order before the menus finish landing, and the vegetarian options are better than the cuisine's usual afterthought. Big round tables suit a crowd, which is how most of the room arrives. Eater lists it among Metro Detroit's best Chinese restaurants.

  8. Rank 264. Uncle Henry

    Hong Kong-style Cantonese Barbecue

  9. Rank 264. Wanna Bao

    Chinese

  10. Washing Potato is a dim sum restaurant on the Las Vegas Strip, from the person behind Hakkasan and Wagamama. The dining room sits on a raised platform with a view into two open kitchens, where cooks steam and roll dumplings by the hundreds. Black walls double as screens for swirling light shows, so even the white furniture gets a little theatrical. Expect traditional dim sum under all the lasers, plus Eater's list of top Chinese restaurants in town.

  11. Rank 264. Wishing Town Bakery Cafe

    Chinese Coffee Shop

  12. Rank 264. Yin Du Wonton Noodle

    Cantonese Noodle Shop

A Chinatown noodle shop where the soup comes piled with roast duck, wontons, and springy yellow noodles, all for around eight dollars. The move, though, is the brisket version, where the braised beef melts into the broth and makes the whole bowl taste twice as serious. Add a side of slow-cooked beef tendon and stir it in as you go. Named among the San Francisco Chronicle's picks for Chinatown, and the line out front tends to agree.

  14. Young's is a carryout counter on 11 Mile in Royal Oak that handles the American Chinese canon: General Tso's, lo mein, beef and broccoli, wontons that crunch on schedule. It's built for a Michigan winter, when sweet, salty, and fried is a coping strategy. Red bean doughnut balls and a can of Vernor's close things out, and the couch does the rest. Eater has included it on its list of Metro Detroit's Chinese restaurants.

  15. Rank 264. Zhang B-B-Q

    Chinese Barbecue

  16. The big tray chicken arrives in a wok the size of a hubcap, bird parts submerged in hot oil with enough Sichuan peppercorns to rearrange your face. This tiny Chinatown noodle cafe runs on Henan hand-stretched wheat noodles, and the brisket topping is the move. The room is small, the tables fill fast, and the bill stays low enough that you can afford to order the garlicky cucumbers without doing any math.

  18. Rank 323. Chain

    Chain Cantonese

A food concept from B.J. Novak that treats chain restaurants as source material rather than punchlines, Chain landed its first permanent home inside a mall food court, which feels exactly right. Four chefs each riff on a fast-food classic: a Cantonese fish sandwich, a spicy chicken number, a teriyaki bowl, a mapo wagyu wrap. The nostalgia is the point, and the execution is the twist.

  25. Rank 323. Jin Huang

    Cantonese

Claypot dishes and lacquered roasted meats are the draw at this polished but casual Cantonese spot, where most of the menu stays under $15 and the lunch crowd moves fast. It shares a building with the much larger Diamond Bay, which means dim sum from that sprawling menu is also on offer, a dangerous development for anyone who came in planning to keep it simple. New York restaurant group, Seattle address, Chinatown, International District building with history.

  26. Rank 323. Jing Fong

    Cantonese Noodle Shop

  27. Rank 323. Joe's Shanghai

    Shanghainese

  28. Rank 323. Kar Son

    Chinese

Kar Son is a sit-down Chinese restaurant in Row DTLA, a spot that sounds like a skeptic's punchline until you're inside it. The menu wanders the whole country, from Sichuan to Yunnan, and keeps a straight face doing it. Floor-to-ceiling windows and wide booths suit a solo noodle soup lunch, and at night the candles and 90s Cantopop make it a group-dinner room. Expect real-restaurant prices, not a lunch counter's.

  33. Rank 323. Mala Class

    Sichuan

A Sichuan restaurant on York Boulevard with a bright green facade that makes it hard to walk past, even if you're committed to a different dinner. The cooking leans on the chef's Chengdu roots while poking at newer ideas, and the wings and fries come dusted in ground spices, which is how fries should be seasoned. The noodles are handmade nearby, and they're the reason to bring a table full of people.

  34. Rank 323. Mee Sum Cafe

    Chinese Coffee Shop

  35. Rank 323. Mike's Noodle House

    Chinese Noodle Shop

  36. MingHin is a big, banquet-style dim sum hall in the Loop, with white tablecloths that promise formality and a room full of families that never got the memo. The menu runs long, and the sesame buns tend to start a small stampede toward the middle of the table. It makes a sensible pit stop once the boat tour, the Sears Tower, and the Bean have all been checked off for your out-of-town guests.

  37. Rank 323. Mr. Chow

    Chinese

Beijing duck carved tableside is the move at Mr. Chow, the Beverly Hills fine dining institution that helped reframe what Chinese food could look like in America. The room leans glamorous, the prices lean ambitious, and the clientele leans toward people who treat both as a given. Dumplings, hand-pulled noodles, and stir-fries round out a menu that draws from upscale pre-revolution Chinese cooking rather than the takeout canon. Steely Dan wrote about it, which tells you something.

  38. Rank 323. Papa Noodle

    Chinese Noodle Shop

Papa Noodle is a fast, casual Chinese noodle shop a short walk from a good chunk of SoMa's office towers, which explains the lunch-hour line of people holding badges. The menu is a handful of bowls, including pork or chicken noodles, beef noodle soup, and a vegan option, with noodles made daily. Every order comes with a White Rabbit candy, the closest thing to a dessert menu or a raise.

  39. The menu calls them "Sichuan ravioli," which tells you everything about the vibe here. This old-school International District Chinese restaurant has been serving homestyle Sichuan long before hot pot chains made the cuisine trendy in Seattle, and the approach hasn't changed much: big plates, ropy noodles, a pepper-reddened boiled fish that sounds mild and isn't, and portions sized like someone's grandmother is worried you look thin.

  41. Rank 323. Tai Tung

    Chinese

The long counter at this old-school Chinese restaurant in the Chinatown-International District has been accumulating scuffs, celebrity photos, and regulars for decades. The menu has been this way forever, and that's the point: beef in oyster sauce, chop suey built on sautéed vegetables, nothing experimental. The owner waves you out the door himself, which is a touch you don't get everywhere.

  43. Rank 323. Tim Ho Wan

    Cantonese

This is a dim sum restaurant in Katy Asian Town, part of the chain that earned the "world's least expensive Michelin-starred restaurant" nickname back in Hong Kong. The baked char siu buns, sweet and crackly on top, are what the room orders first. The dining room is big and booth-lined, with a bar off to the side that gives it a faint sports-bar energy. Nobody dresses up for this, and the check stays modest.

  47. Rank 362. Mr. H

    Modern Chinese

A golden dragon centerpiece anchors the dining room at this upscale Chinese restaurant in the Seaport, where the lighting is dramatic enough to make you feel like the evening has stakes. The menu leans into creative dim sum, lacquered duck, and fresh seafood, with cocktails chosen to keep pace. It runs late, which earns it points in a neighborhood that often doesn't.

  48. Rank 363. Brewery Bhavana

    Chinese Beer Bar

A craft brewery and dim sum restaurant sharing the same address sounds like a dare, but here it works without irony. While you wait for a table, there are 40 rotating drafts and a flower market to keep you occupied. The menu runs from bao and dumplings to Peking duck and steamed whole fish, best navigated with a group and a willingness to order past the point of reason.

    Cantonese Café

A Hong Kong-style all-day cafe where five-spice wings, barbecued unagi over scrambled eggs, Portuguese custard tarts, and clam chowder share a menu without anyone blinking. TingTing's, from the team behind EMei, is small, crowded, and BYO, which covers the essentials. The menu sprawls in the way those old Hong Kong cafes do, where Western comfort food and Cantonese staples occupy the same laminated page and somehow coexist peacefully.

  76. Kwok's Bistro is a casual, stand-alone Cantonese-leaning Chinese restaurant just west of the big downtown casinos, which is about as far from a buffet as Reno gets. The chef, a former casino busboy, takes days to prepare the Beijing duck, so ordering it is a commitment. Wok-fired dishes lean on garlic and ginger, and the lamb brings real heat. The chef was a James Beard Best Chef: Southwest semifinalist.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
