  1. Rank 859. Hupo

    Sichuan

Some nights you can hear the woks before you see the menu. Hupo is a sleek, narrow Sichuan restaurant in Long Island City where the heat is dialed to "fragrant" rather than "punishing," which is either a relief or a disappointment depending on who you ask. The mapo tofu uses house-made cubes and the wontons come in a sweet-spicy sauce that earns its own regular fan base. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of place you end up at twice in one week.

  2. Rank 859. HWARO

    Korean

A 22-seat counter tucked inside Gui Steakhouse, up an elevator and easy to walk past without knowing. Sungchul Shim runs a multicourse tasting menu where Korean flavors meet French technique, and the two Michelin stars suggest the kitchen takes that fusion seriously. Chefs work at the center of the room in full view, which keeps everyone facing the same direction for once. The white soy custard with Osetra caviar has developed a following of its own.

  3. Rank 859. Ishq

    Modern Indian

A salmon-pink quartz bar runs the full length of the front room before giving way to a moodier dining space where everything arrives family-style, whether you planned it that way or not. This modern Indian restaurant on Avenue A earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand by actually delivering on the spice, depth, and nuance that the genre usually only promises. The lamb shank biryani is portioned for a small crowd, which is the correct way to order it.

  4. Rank 859. ITO

    Sushi

The 16-seat counter in Tribeca runs loud for an omakase room, which is part of the point. The team behind ITO has no patience for hushed reverence: fish flown in from Tokyo and Fukuoka anchors a nigiri progression with deep cuts and assertive saucing, and the appetizers and desserts pull their weight too. Whiskey and sake flow, the room skews young, and everyone booked their next reservation before the first one ended.

  5. Rank 859. Jiang Nan

    Chinese

Roast Peking duck arrives on a silver tray with thin pancakes, which sets the tone for what Jiang Nan is doing: upscale Chinese dining that roams the whole country rather than planting a flag in one region. The room leans Imperial, all lacquer and stone and greenery, and it reads as date-night or business lunch depending on who you came with. The Michelin Guide has given it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a place this polished on Bowery.

  6. The omakase counter tucked inside Kanoyama runs on select days only, so planning ahead is part of the deal. It's the serious, pricey sushi experience the East Village rarely advertises: a small counter, a chef calling the shots, and fish flown in with obvious intention. The sake list is deep enough that regulars argue about it, and you're handed an assortment of cups to choose from, which is a nicer problem than most restaurants give you.

  9. The hand-pulled noodles here get stir-fried to order, and the soup dumplings draw a crowd that fills every table and then stands outside doing the math on the wait. This is a loud, steamy Chinese noodle house in Midtown that holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, so the lines are not going anywhere. The dumpling menu alone could occupy a dedicated researcher. Cash in your patience and go.

  10. Rank 859. La Dong

    Vietnamese

Lotus-shaped lamps and Colonial-era wooden arches set the mood just off Union Square, where this Vietnamese restaurant earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand with cooking that goes well past the expected banh mi. Come with a group and order deep: the turmeric crepe with shrimp and fresh herbs is a sharp move, and the pho, poured tableside, arrives fragrant enough to rearrange your whole afternoon.

  13. Rank 859. La Vara

    Spanish

The slow-roasted suckling pig leg that anchors the menu tells you this isn't your standard tapas crawl. La Vara is a cozy Spanish restaurant in Cobble Hill where the kitchen takes cocina casera, home cooking, as both its premise and its ambition. Alex Raij's food has a playful, quietly inventive quality; the room draws the kind of neighborhood regulars who eventually stop looking at the menu and just tell the server to do whatever.

  14. Rank 859. Laliko

    Georgian Eastern European

A West Village Georgian restaurant where the wine list runs entirely from the Caucasus and the servers teach you how to eat khinkali before you embarrass yourself. Those large, broth-filled dumplings are the move, though the khachapuri, in either its cheese-molten or mint-bright form, will slow you down first. A long communal table anchors a room hung with murals. Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  15. Strip-mall Sichuan in Whitestone, Queens, with a Michelin Bib Gourmand tucked behind a menu that also lists crab Rangoon for the uninitiated. The kitchen's real business is the numbing, chilli-forward cooking of Sichuan province: spicy mung bean jelly noodles, crispy eggplant with a glass-like crust, and smoked pork shaved thin enough to read through. The tears-in-eyes jelly salad delivers on the peanuts and chillies if not the weeping. Cash in your General Tso's loyalty points here.

  16. Rank 859. Little Alley

    Shanghainese

A Shanghai restaurant in Murray Hill where the vegetable dishes alone could anchor a meal, which tells you something about the kitchen's priorities. The crispy eel arrives sweet and glossy and somehow disappears before you've decided you like it. Pork and crab soup dumplings lean restrained rather than explosive, and the mapo tofu is silken and properly fiery. Dark walls, warm light, a small bar up front. The Michelin Bib Gourmand is on record here.

  17. A crunchy Burmese pancake stuffed with vegetables and sesame seeds is the right way to start at this tiny East Village restaurant, where a family team runs the room with the kind of warmth that makes a ten-table spot feel like the whole point of the neighborhood. The menu runs longer than you'd expect from a place this small, covering soups, salads, curries, and noodles. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and easy to see why portions are built for sharing.

    The awards

  18. The dry pot at this East Village Sichuan spot lets you build your own bowl from scratch, choosing proteins, vegetables, and heat level from a list long enough to be mildly paralyzing. Low ceilings, exposed brick, and a communal table set the scene. The Michelin Bib Gourmand regulars often skip the decision fatigue and go straight for dan dan noodles or cold braised beef and tripe. Nothing here will make you cry; Sichuan-curious beginners are safe.

  19. David Chang's noodle shop has been around forever, and the steamed buns alone have kept it packed. The room runs on wood counters and an open kitchen, and service moves at a clip, which suits the vibe. The menu leans into Asian street food with enough creativity to keep regulars guessing. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of spot where you'll spend less than you expect and think about it for days after.

    Hawaiian

Polaroids of regulars tile every wall of this dimly lit East Village neighborhood restaurant, which has been doing Hawaiian comfort food long enough to feel like part of the block's furniture. The mochiko fried chicken comes with macaroni salad and King's Hawaiian rolls, the musubi platter runs from spicy spam to salmon tartare, and the German riesling list goes deeper than anyone sees coming. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and a genuinely easy room to spend a whole evening in.

  22. Arancini at this Sicilian restaurant on Third Avenue arrive in a pool of light tomato sauce, golden and crisp in a way that makes "rice ball" feel like an insult. The menu runs through the kind of food that probably came off identical crackle-glazed platters in Sicily, and the rustic room is hung with a few of them. A Michelin Bib Gourmand pick. Before you leave, the specialty ingredients near the door have a way of following you home.

  23. Rank 859. Nubeluz

    Cocktail Bar

Fifty floors up in the Ritz-Carlton NoMad, this cocktail bar from the José Andrés group takes its name from the Spanish words for cloud and light, which is either poetic or on the nose depending on how far into the menu you are. The views run 270 degrees over the city, and the drinks lean into reimagined classics, from an adonis to a tom collins. Dress accordingly; the room expects it.

  24. Rank 859. Nyonya

    Malaysian

Nasi lemak, the Malaysian classic of coconut rice with pickled veg, crispy anchovies, and curried chicken, is what the regulars reorder without looking up. Nyonya is a no-frills Malaysian restaurant in Chinatown, brick walls and wooden tables, where the menu runs long and the servers are opinionated enough to steer you past the obvious choices. The Michelin Guide gives it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a room this unpretentious feeding people this well.

  25. Rooms here are styled after the classic North Brooklyn apartment, which sounds like damning with faint praise until you see the hardwood floors, the kitchenettes, and the art books chosen with actual care. This boutique hotel in Williamsburg keeps an in-house gallery for good measure, since framed prints apparently weren't enough. Union Pool is steps away, so you'll know by midnight whether that's a selling point or a warning.

  26. The southern edge of Bryant Park has quietly become Sichuan row, and Peppercorn Station is the bright, cheerful one with a menu built for ordering too much and splitting the bill. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and earns it with a kitchen that keeps the heat calibrated, nudging the sinuses rather than punishing them. A casual Chinese restaurant where the numbing, golden broths and fermented black bean mapo tofu do the talking.

  27. Rank 859. Phayul

    Classic Tibetan

The momos at this Tibetan restaurant in Jackson Heights are the opening argument: big, carefully pleated dumplings arriving in a cloud of steam, stuffed with beef and scallions. Michelin gave it a Bib Gourmand, and the rest of the menu holds up, from chewy stir-fried noodles to chicken with caramelized onions and peppers. There's chili oil on every table and a hot sauce that means business. Portions are generous and prices are kind.

  28. A two-story Thai restaurant near Union Square that comes with a long bar, a full house most nights, and the kind of noise level that makes the food taste better. The menu covers a broad stretch of Thai cooking, classical and contemporary, with enough chili heat to remind you where you are. A Michelin Bib Gourmand pick that draws a crowd happy to wait for it.

    Wine Bar

A natural wine bar on East Seventh Street where the list leans hard into Eastern Europe and the sommeliers can talk about it all night. The food menu is short and rotates, which keeps the regulars genuinely curious. Michelin gave it a Bib Gourmand, and the room, split between a communal high-top and a quieter dining area, fills up fast enough that a reservation is less optional than it sounds.

  30. A sun-drenched sliver of a New American restaurant in Park Slope, Runner Up earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand by doing exactly what it sounds like it shouldn't: taking vegetables seriously without making you feel lectured. The menu swings between playful and precise, with produce driving dishes that also happen to involve trout rillette or daikon standing in for tortellini. Bread and desserts come courtesy of the sibling spot next door, which is either cheating or genius.

  31. Rank 859. Sami & Susu

    Mediterranean Wine Bar

The kitchen here runs without a proper gas stove, which makes the lamb ragu over house-made spätzle even more worth puzzling over. Sami & Susu is a narrow Mediterranean wine bar on Orchard Street, with a short seasonal menu that wanders the Middle East, a natural wine list, and a punky soundtrack. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and the staff seem genuinely unbothered by how much you order.

  32. A pizza shop inside a Times Square subway station, which sounds like a dare and turns out to be a genuinely good idea. Black-and-white checkered floors and 80s classics on the speakers give it a casual, slightly punk energy, and the thin-crust pies hold their own against the commuter chaos outside. 33. Matzoh ball ramen is the menu's thesis statement, and it holds up. This creative South Williamsburg restaurant earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand by stitching Ashkenazi Jewish and Japanese cooking together without the seams showing, toro tartare landing on sake kasu challah, Wagyu pastrami pressed into milk bread. 34. Rank 859. Sobaya

    Japanese Noodle Shop

Buckwheat soba, hot or cold depending on what the weather is doing to you, has kept this East Village noodle shop humming for longer than most of its neighbors have existed. The room runs to booths, counter seats, and a calm, traditional feel that makes it easy to linger. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and one of the rare spots in the city where a walk-in during peak dinner hours won't leave you standing on the sidewalk.

  35. Rank 859. Sobre Masa

    Mexican

Heirloom corn gets the full treatment here: nixtamalized, milled, and pressed into house-made tortillas that anchor everything on the menu. This Bushwick taqueria and tortilla shop earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand for a tight menu that runs from carnitas to chicken liver tostadas with candied kumquats, which tells you exactly what kind of ambition is hiding behind the counter. The salsas alone could cause a scene.

The team spent years in the Jean-Georges universe, and that background shows up in combinations you wouldn't expect a pizza joint to attempt, like the St. Louis, which lays Midwestern Provel cheese over pickled peppers and meat on a proper crust. 39. Murano chandeliers hang over mahogany floors, and the Italian leather furnishings are soft enough that you notice them. This Long Island hotel has been around forever, and a renovation by designer Marcello Pozzi pushed it into something more contemporary without losing the grandeur. Manhattan, JFK, and LaGuardia are all close, which makes it a useful base for more than just the suburbs. The spa sits on the lower level beneath a light-filled atrium.

  41. Red lamps strung across the dining room push back hard against any suggestion this is just another Upper East Side Thai spot. It's a contemporary Thai restaurant pulling dishes from across the country, so the menu runs from Northern sai-ua spring rolls and khao soi to Southern Phuket-style curries, which is a longer journey than most places attempt. The cocktails are named after Thai temple festival games, a detail that earns its place. A Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  43. Rank 859. Tonchin

    Authentic Ramen Shop

The tonkotsu broth here is pork-forward but never heavy, which sounds like a small thing until you've slogged through a bowl that coats your throat like spackling compound. This Tokyo-based ramen shop in Midtown pulls its noodles in-house, and they hold their spring all the way to the bottom of the bowl. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand. The room is sleek enough for a working lunch and relaxed enough for a slow dinner.

  44. A Korean barbecue spot in Flushing's Murray Hill where the tabletop grills run hot and the room stays packed. The décor skips every trend in favor of the food, which is the right call. Banchan arrives before you've settled in, including house kimchi that's been aged long enough to mean it. 45. A one-acre working farm on the grounds sets the tone for this 22-room boutique hotel on the Hamptons' quieter, less scene-y end. Jean-Georges runs the restaurant, and the kitchen leans heavily on what's growing out back. The rooms are chic and modern without the look-at-me energy that follows money east from Manhattan on summer Fridays. Bridgehampton is a pleasant stroll from here; the Montauk Highway strip is low-key by local standards.

  48. Rank 859. Wheated

    Pizzeria

The New Haven-style pies here are cooked to a serious crunch, with dough pressed thinner than the Connecticut purists would sanction and a tangy, oregano-heavy tomato sauce that makes a decent argument for staying in Brooklyn. Wheated is a Ditmas Park pizzeria with a full bar that also does bagels, so the menu has range. The New York Times put it on their best pizza in New York list, which is the kind of thing that fills a neighborhood spot fast.

  49. Rank 859. Win Son

    Modern Taiwanese

The facade is done up like a corner bodega, but step inside and it's all blonde wood, exposed brick, and a little bar where solo diners settle in without apology. Win Son is a bright, casual Taiwanese spot in Williamsburg that holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the menu takes Taiwan's culinary landscape somewhere fresher than the usual shorthand suggests. Scallion pancakes show up alongside so many dishes that ordering them as a starter is quietly redundant.

Graduate by Hilton leans into that campus identity hard, with Snøhetta-designed rooms in bright, cheerful colors and skyline views on most sides. The 18th-floor Panorama Room bar delivers a 360-degree look at New York from an angle the city rarely offers its own residents.

  61. A converted 19th-century textile warehouse in Greenpoint, the Henry Norman is a boutique hotel where the loft-style rooms lean into the bones of the building: hardwood floors, exposed brick, and, depending on your room, a terrace or rooftop. The retro vibe extends to a vintage taxi kept on call as in-house car service, which is either charming or a lot, depending on your mood. Williamsburg is a short walk south when you need a meal.

    Italian

Green lacquered chairs and upholstered nooks fill this Italian restaurant tucked into Rockefeller Center, brought uptown by the team behind SoHo's King. The open kitchen and bar counter keep it lively without tipping into noisy. The menu is short and focused, leaning into good pasta and a cocktail list that includes a negroni sbagliato bianco, which sounds made up but isn't.

    Thai

Exposed brick and poured cement set a sleek, airy backdrop for traditional Thai cooking that has been quietly reworked for the contemporary table. The restaurant in Williamsburg came out swinging as a James Beard Best New Restaurant Semifinalist, and the menu earns the attention, moving through braises, curries, and fermented heat with real conviction. Dress sharp, expect to spend.

  68. A long-ferment dough is the whole argument at this Ridgewood slice shop, producing a thin, crispy-bottomed slice that holds its toppings without going limp on the walk to the counter. The menu runs classics alongside richer, more creative options, and the room is small, informal, and quick. The New York Times named it one of the city's 25 best pizza places, and 50 Top Pizza put it at number eleven on its national slice list.

  70. Rank 954. Sadelle's

    Bakery

Bagels arrive stacked on wooden dowels here, which tells you most of what you need to know about the vibe. This is Major Food Group's theatrical, not-quite-kosher take on a Jewish appetizing shop in Soho, where seed-crusted bagels anchor spreads of lox, sable, and sturgeon, and there's a full caviar section for when a schmear feels insufficiently dramatic. Budget accordingly; this crowd did not come to save money.

  72. A few steps from Madison Square Park, this pizza shop has made a name for itself with a well-fermented dough that stays light enough to eat without regret. The round NY-style pies lean into garlic, while the square pepperoni comes out properly leavened and crisp underneath. The XXL mozzarella stick, served with marinara, is the kind of starter that settles the question of whether to order it immediately. 50 Top Pizza USA ranked it thirteenth in the country.

  73. Suma katsuo, a buttery fish rarely seen outside Japan, gets cold-smoked over cherry wood and finished with onion sauce, sesame, and nori at this intimate omakase counter on Prince Street. The New York Times named that sashimi course one of the top dishes of 2024. Chef Ben Chen's approach is precise without being fussy, and the room rewards the kind of guest who came to pay attention rather than to be seen.

  74. The servers might greet you in Greek if you look like you belong, and on Ditmars Boulevard, plenty of people do. This no-frills Astoria taverna has been feeding the neighborhood long enough to qualify as local infrastructure, with a bustling open kitchen and a menu built around simply prepared whole fish, classic dips, and flaky spinach pie. The Michelin Guide has it listed, but the crowd at the tables wouldn't need to be told.

  76. A boutique hotel on the Rockaway Beach strip, designed by Morris Adjmi, the architect behind Brooklyn's Wythe, so it has that same knowing downtown confidence planted squarely in deep Queens. The 53 rooms look out over the Atlantic or Jamaica Bay, the palette runs to sand and ocean blue, and the beach-and-pool scene in summer makes the subway commute from midtown feel like a reasonable sacrifice.

    Dim Sum Chinese

The carts find you before you find your seat, which is how it works at this Flushing dim sum hall. Oversized round tables, ornate chandeliers, bamboo plants, and enough shumai to reconsider your weekend plans. No menu required; most regulars never open one. Weekends get loud and frenetic in a very satisfying way, so an early arrival is less a suggestion than a survival strategy. The Michelin Guide has it listed among their selected restaurants.

A water taxi from Pier 25 drops you on Governors Island, a city park that happens to sit between Brooklyn and the Statue of Liberty, where Collective operates a glamping resort that makes the Catskills seem like a lot of driving. Tents come with air conditioning, Frette robes, and en suite bathrooms, and the top cabin adds a soaking tub aimed at the Statue of Liberty. Cocktails on the Sunset Terrace, morning buffet, yoga, oyster shucking classes: summer camp, if camp had gone upmarket.

  83. Rank 987. Dar Lbahja

    Traditional Moroccan

The chicken bastilla arrives dusted with powdered sugar and rose petals, which sounds precious until you taste it and understand why the New York Times critic put it on her favorites list. This is a modest, neighborhood Moroccan cafe in Astoria where the cooking is traditional and the prices are gentle. The pastry crackles, the filling runs sweet then savory, and the two never quite separate. A $12 dish that requires a hundred paper-thin layers to pull off.

  84. Rank 987. Goosefeather

    Modern Cantonese

Dale Talde's Hong Kong-style restaurant sits inside a carriage house on a sprawling Hudson Valley estate, where the dining rooms look like someone inherited very good furniture and actually kept it. The menu runs kung pao wings alongside bao stuffed with crispy shrimp and daikon, the kind of cooking that's both nostalgic and quietly restless. Dressy-casual crowd, unhurried pace, and a setting that makes Tarrytown feel like a reasonable destination.

A reservation here is the kind of thing West Village regulars treat as a competitive sport, so walk-ins at odd hours are the move. Rita Sodi's cozy Italian neighborhood restaurant on Bleecker changes its daily specials with the seasons while holding certain signatures hostage in the best way. The bar handles a Negroni with conviction, and the room hums all night with the particular energy of a place where nobody looks like they're having a bad time.

The rooftop of the Hoxton Hotel in Williamsburg, with the Manhattan skyline doing its thing at sunset, is a solid place to eat skewers. This is Michael Solomonov's skewer house, and the format is pleasantly fixed: a spread of salatim to start, then meat and vegetable skewers over the coals, then soft-serve. Reservations are famously hard to land, which tells you something about how the room fills on a Tuesday.

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
