The best places to eat and stay in Toronto, according to the experts: AAA, 50 Top Italy, and Michelin Guide have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. DaNico comes out on top.
More Less
Quetzal and aKin hold the next two places. Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with AAA close behind.

Rank 1. DaNico
Italian
The dining room occupies a former bank, and the high ceilings and long linen tablecloths suggest the space hasn't entirely forgotten its past grandeur. This is fine dining Italian, with a tasting menu or prix fixe built around Ontario produce and serious technique. Irreverent artwork keeps the mood from tipping into solemnity. The wine list leans deep Italian with growing Ontario representation. DaNico holds a Michelin star and placed third on 50 Top Italy's global list.

Mexican
A ten-metre open fire pit runs the length of this sleek College Street Mexican restaurant, and nearly every dish on the menu answers to it. The undulating ceiling, designed to echo the tarp-covered stalls of Mexican markets, sets the mood before the food does. Tortillas are pressed to order from heirloom corn nixtamalized in-house, and the mezcal and tequila cocktail program keeps pace with the kitchen. It holds a Michelin star and a spot on North America's 50 Best Restaurants.

The four-seat chef's counter at the back is the seat everyone wants, close enough to watch Eric Chong's kitchen turn a dim sum memory or a single oyster into something quietly astonishing. This is a Michelin-starred fine dining room on Colborne Street doing a modern Asian tasting menu, gold-leaf finishes and strategic low light included. The crowd came dressed for it. Cocktails downstairs carry their own ambition before the ten courses begin.

Italian
Thirty-eight floors above Toronto Harbour, this fine-dining room does Modern Italian without the baroque excess, letting clean Mediterranean technique do the work. The tasting menu is the move, with pasta given the same seriousness as anything else on the plate. A Michelin star and a spot on the 50 Top Italy world list follow from somewhere, and the room knows it, carrying itself with a professionalism that feels earned rather than performed.

Spanish Mediterranean
The menu isn't printed, because by the time you sit down it's already changed. Edulis is a tiny tasting-menu restaurant behind a candy-striped awning on Niagara Street, run by a husband-and-wife team whose culinary frame of reference is the old Michelin-starred dining rooms of Spain and France, framed posters of which line the walls. Phones away, table yours for the night. It holds a Michelin star and a spot on North America's 50 Best.

Steaks seared under an overfired broiler, then brushed with pastrami tallow butter: that's the move at Linny's, David Schwartz's fine-dining Jewish American steakhouse on Ossington. The mid-century dining room runs to white linen, golden light, and banquettes comfortable enough to make you order another round. The bar's eight seats have their own scene, with cocktails that fold deli ingredients into the classics in ways that are more clever than they sound.

The Four Seasons brand started in Toronto, so the Yorkville flagship carries a certain pressure to get things right. This glass tower hotel earns its Forbes Five Star with quietly luxurious rooms recently renovated to nod at the Canadian landscape, a Daniel Boulud restaurant on site, and service that reportedly sets the standard for every other property in the chain, which is either reassuring or a lot to live up to, depending on your mood.

The name means "anchovy" in a Jeju dialect, and a little fish decal above the door is the only signage you'll notice. Inside this 30-seat Korean-Japanese small plates spot on a quiet Bloor West residential street, the menu rotates daily around seasonal Ontario produce and carefully sourced imports, with a sake list doing most of the heavy lifting on drinks. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and a spot on North America's 50 Best.

Contemporary Mexican
The open kitchen anchors this 24-seat contemporary Mexican tasting menu restaurant in the financial district, where cooks often carry their own plates to the table. The chef, Rafa Covarrubias, brought his team over from a Michelin-starred Oakville room to focus entirely on one menu, and the flavors here are vivid and precise in a way that a 70-seat operation rarely allows. The room is calm and dimly lit, the service warm without fuss.

A 40-ton metal tree outside sets the tone: nature and city, held in deliberate tension. This Forbes Five Star, Michelin Key hotel sits in Toronto's financial district but reads more like a sanctuary, with carved wooden screens, cascading waterfalls, and rooms so generous that the standard category runs larger than most hotels' suites. The fifth-floor spa has a hammam and a 20-meter pool with floor-to-ceiling views over the city below.

Yabu Pushelberg designed the interiors, and the suites average six hundred square feet, which tells you where this boutique hotel sits on the spectrum. The Hazelton is Yorkville's idea of a grand hotel, all heated bathroom floors, a private screening room that fills up during film festival season, and a lobby that skews Gatsby without apologizing for it. Forbes Five Star and two Michelin Keys. Celebrities apparently appreciate the discretion, though the bar patio is very much the opposite.

Japanese
The counter wraps the open kitchen, and the room is in constant motion, a young team pivoting between courses while Chef Takeshi Sato moves through it all with the calm of someone who has nothing to prove. This is a Japanese kappo omakase, freestyle and personal, with most ingredients flown in from Japan. It holds a Michelin star, and the dashi alone explains a good portion of why.

Candlelight bouncing off cream walls and blond-oak tables sets the tone at Rob Rossi's luxe Italian restaurant, which holds a Michelin star and zeroes in on the seafood-forward cooking of Liguria rather than the usual Italian greatest-hits tour. The staff runs things with a quiet confidence that's either very reassuring or slightly unnerving, depending on your mood. Eight courses from an open kitchen in a room that manages to feel welcoming rather than ceremonial. This is a contemporary tasting-menu restaurant in Yorkville, where the chef, an Alo alumnus, keeps plates to three or four ingredients and lets them do the talking. A 200-year-old hinoki counter anchors this intimate omakase room on Avenue Road, where Chef Masaki Saito flies his fish exclusively from Japan and keeps the atmosphere warm enough that laughter genuinely competes with reverence. Fifty-four floors up in the TD Bank Tower, the city spreads out below you like a very expensive map. Canoe is a long-running fine-dining institution where lunch belongs to Bay Street and dinner slows to something more ambitious, the kitchen turning out contemporary Canadian cooking with serious technique. Steakhouse
Follow the smell of barbecue down an alley stacked with firewood and you'll find the front door. Inside, Matty Matheson's steakhouse is all maple slats, a domed ceiling, and salmon-pink booths, which sounds like a lot until you're sitting in it. The menu moves from Sicilian crudo and tartares through big dry-aged cuts cooked on the grill, with vegetable sides that quietly refuse to be an afterthought. Chinese
Down a Kensington Market hallway that looks like it leads nowhere, a door opens onto a loud, packed room doing serious Sichuan-inflected Chinese cooking. Chinese
Tucked behind Hong Shing on Dundas, Yan is a micro-restaurant running three nights a week for 28 guests at a time. Chef Eva Chin strikes a gong before each course, then narrates the food with warmth and disarming candour, connecting Cantonese tradition, Singaporean memory, and Hawai'ian upbringing into what she calls neo-Chinese cooking. The monthly tasting menu ends with guests leaving clutching bags of leftovers, which tells you something about the spirit of the host.

Italian Steakhouse
Oxblood leather banquettes, marble everywhere, and a cocktail trolley that arrives tableside bearing elaborate Martinis: Sammarco is Toronto's Italian steakhouse at full volume. The five Ontario dry-aged cuts are the backbone, sourced from Cumbrae's and treated simply, but the menu wanders into grilled sweetbreads and snow crab risotto for those who came for more than beef. The ssämjang is fermented in-house, which is either a signal that the kitchen takes Korean barbecue seriously or that it has too much time on its hands, probably both. This upscale Korean BBQ spot on College Street dry-ages an international roster of proteins and has servers manage the grill so you don't have to. The banchan rotates with the seasons, and the cocktail list leans Korean. Canada's 100 Best landed it at number 46.

Floor-to-ceiling windows look out over the financial, entertainment, and waterfront districts from every one of the 263 rooms, which run among the largest in the city. The house bread changes with whatever the chef has on hand, garlic scapes one week, sundried tomatoes the next, and it arrives crusty and worth slowing down for. FK is a neighborhood restaurant with a sun-filled room that reads more tearoom than bistro, and a market-driven menu that follows the season without making a fuss about it. Tagliatelle gets rolled fresh daily, and the menu drifts between English and Italian, but N.L. Ginzburg is doing something more specific than a trattoria. Named after anti-fascist Italian intellectuals, this College Street spot threads Italo-Jewish culinary history through hyper-seasonal Canadian ingredients: a liver toast that nods to both Tuscan fegatini and Jewish chopped liver, rugelach at dessert. Dim sum that never stayed in its lane sits at the center of this fusion restaurant on Spadina, where MasterChef Canada winner Eric Chong and his mentor Alvin Leung run a menu that pulls from French, Korean, and Chinese kitchens in the same breath. Bao stuffed with kimchi and galbi, flaky pastry hiding foie gras, butter-poached lobster over dashi, the whole thing feels like a cooking competition that nobody stopped. A Michelin Bib Gourmand.

Hand-folded dumplings that change with the seasons set the tone at DaiLo, Nick Liu's New Asian-French restaurant on College Street. The menu is built around sharing, with dishes that are generous, boldly seasoned, and clearly personal. Whole fried trout with nam jim and Hainanese chicken with black truffle under the skin suggest the kitchen's register. The cocktails are taken seriously, and the wines are well-chosen. Come with people you like feeding.

Rank 58. The Ace
American
A slim vintage diner on Roncesvalles that's been around forever, The Ace holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand for doing brunch better than most restaurants do dinner. The sourdough hits the griddle in the morning and the smell makes the lineup feel shorter than it is. The French toast, a thick brioche square with caramelized pears and whipped ricotta, is the kind of thing that makes people rearrange their Sundays.

A lobby floor that appears to float, suspended from concrete arches by metal rods, is a strong opening argument for a hotel. The Ace Toronto sits in the Garment District, designed with curvaceous brick and retro-futuristic bones. Rooms lean unpretentious: bare wood, vintage-ish furniture, efficient without being sparse. Patrick Kriss runs the restaurant downstairs, and a 14th-floor bar handles the panoramic-view duties. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

Chinese
Red lanterns and a ceramic lucky cat set the tone, but scallion bao filled with stracciatella cheese does the explaining. This tiny Bloordale Village restaurant lands a Michelin Bib Gourmand for cooking that defies easy labeling, pairing pan-fried radish cakes and pork wonton noodles with miso cheesecake and Parmesan tapioca fritters. Servers pour natural wines throughout, cheerfully, as if the bottle might run out.

Rank 64. Aloette
Diner
Patrick Kriss runs the tasting-menu temple ALO one floor up, and Aloette is what he does when he loosens his collar. The room is barely wider than a train car, the menu reads like a diner, and the cheddar brioche arrives complimentary before you've even decided anything. Everyone orders the burger; everyone ends with the lemon meringue pie, which is tall enough to cause a scene. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

Some rooms here were designed by Lenny Kravitz, which tells you roughly what you're getting: a 96-room boutique hotel in the Entertainment District where the interiors swing between opulent and rock-and-roll. Four bars and restaurants run from a casual Parisian café on the lower floors to a California-Baja rooftop on the 44th. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

Rank 64. Campechano Adelaide
Mexican
Heirloom corn from Mexico, pressed and griddled into tortillas daily, is the entire argument for this taco shop on Adelaide. The room is white kitchen tile and worn wood, the menu is short, and everything arrives fast and hot before the meal is suddenly, almost rudely, over. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of place you're already planning to revisit before you've finished chewing.

Reclaimed wood panels and colorful murals set the tone at this Indian street food spot on a busy stretch of Bayview, where the menu roams across regions rather than settling into one corner of the subcontinent. Chaats arrive lashed in chutney, thalis land as genuinely oversized platters, and the deep-fried cauliflower in sweet chili glaze has its own following. Servers talk you down from over-ordering, which is kind of them. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

Steakhouse
Aged white cheddar popovers land on your table minutes after you sit down, and coffee cake muffins follow you home. That's the bookend philosophy at this sleek, upscale steakhouse in CIBC Square, where the real business is a dry-ageing programme serious enough to earn a spot on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list. Cuts come from Canada, Japan, Australia, and beyond, and the Burgundy-heavy wine list is ready to make any of them expensive.

Rank 64. Sushi Yūgen
Sushi
Eight seats tucked at the back of the main room, twice nightly, all ingredients flown in from Japan. Sushi Yūgen is a kaiseki-influenced omakase counter where the chef builds around 18 courses and occasionally lands something like okoze, the devil scorpionfish, which is either thrilling or alarming depending on your disposition. The wine list leans toward white Burgundy, and the Japanese whisky selection includes bottles that don't surface anywhere else in the country.

Jen Agg's Kensington Market restaurant holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which tells you something about the short, shape-shifting menu: it changes often, leans on raw bar, house-made pasta, and whatever the kitchen feels like doing, and it overdelivers quietly. The room is loud and good-looking, the wine list is serious, and the crowd arrives dressed like they knew about this street before you did. Cash in your pocket optional; attitude is the currency here.

Rank 76. Bar Goa
Indian
The appam arrives loaded with fresh white crab meat, which sets the tone for what Bar Goa is doing: a Goan Indian cocktail bar on Toronto Street that takes the food as seriously as the drinks. The menu leans toward Goa's coastal cooking but wanders happily into Punjabi territory too, and the kitchen has a light enough touch to pull off the occasional whimsical plate without losing the plot. A seven-course tasting menu is available for the committed.

A red brick building on Queen East houses this upscale contemporary bistro, where the room mixes industrial bones with enough warmth that the patio fills up the moment the weather cooperates. The chef composes tasting menus of five, seven, or ten courses on the fly, which is either reassuring or terrifying depending on your temperament. Half-pour cocktails and small wine pours keep things measured for anyone pacing themselves.

Egyptian Café
The honey-cardamom latte greets you at the coffee bar before you've even found a seat, which tells you something about the priorities here. Maha's is a brunch cafe in Leslieville serving Egyptian home cooking, no reservations, breakfast and lunch only. The lentil soup, thick with vinegar-soaked onions and charred pita, is the dish that reportedly started the whole project. The Michelin Guide has taken note.

The carrot plate arrives topped with bay leaf ice cream over melted brie, and the menu doesn't apologize for it. This creative neighbourhood restaurant on Queen East has a whimsical, eclectic room and dishes that quietly wink at other spots around town. Tartares and dips give way to burgers, turnip cakes, and kofta with rhubarb yogurt. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which fits the vibe of a place that's clearly having fun without making a big deal of it.

Rank 86. Beach Hill Smokehouse
Barbecue
The brisket here is cooked low and slow over oak until the smoke does exactly as much work as it should, no more. This is a Central Texas-style BBQ shop in Toronto, with all the markers: smoked meats by the pound, saucy sandwiches, and weekly specials that tend toward the Flintstones end of the portion scale. The pitmaster brought the method up from Dallas, and the regulars who've figured out the beef rib schedule consider that a personal win.

Rank 89. Aanch
Indian
A regional Indian restaurant on Wellington that hopscotches the subcontinent, from Chennai's deep-fried chicken 65 to the fiery vindaloos of Goa. The dining room is quiet and a little sleepy, which makes the kitchen's ambition feel like a pleasant surprise. The chef adds decorative swirls to the plates, a habit the food doesn't need but survives with its dignity intact. An old-school institution that keeps filling tables without making a fuss about it.

The wood-burning grill handles jerk chicken here, and the smoke from it is half the reason to walk through the door. This is an easygoing Jamaican spot where the cooking is homey and unpretentious, the classics run deep, and the gravy from the curry goat or oxtail stew can be ordered as a side, which is the kind of menu decision that earns a place lasting loyalty. Once the tallest building in the British Empire, the Royal York now plays underdog to the glass towers crowding Front Street. It's a grand old railway hotel with all the ceremony that implies: sweeping public rooms, a spa with a 50-foot pool, and enough dining options that you never have to leave. The Michelin Guide lists it among its selected hotels. Modern comforts are there; the bones are clearly what people come for.

Every room in this red brick Victorian hotel on Queen West was decorated by a different Canadian artist and carries a title like an original artwork, not just a number. The result is bohemian-baroque rather than luxury-minimalist, and the vibe holds through the building. The railway still runs close enough to feel it, and the bar stays loud late, so bring earplugs or a tolerance for good company.
