  2. The tiled walls and old meat hooks are all that survived the remodel of this former butcher's shop, now a charming modern restaurant in the suburbs southeast of Paris. Two surprise tasting menus let the kitchen work with whatever looks good that day, sourced from Rungis or a nearby organic farm. A hidden table in the wine cellar seats a few guests, reservation required, which is exactly the kind of detail that fills a room with people who consider themselves in the know.

  4. Rank 2339. L'Inattendu

    Modern French

Old stonework walls and modern chairs set the tone at this quietly ambitious restaurant in a converted municipal building in rural Corrèze. The chef works closely with local producers, moving between classic French forms like pâté en croûte and something more personal, crispy boudin noir dumplings with apple compote among them. The dining room runs with understated warmth, the kind where you notice the service only because it never falters.

  5. Tucked among holiday villas a short walk from the beach, this modern restaurant serves creative, locally rooted cooking that reads a little livelier than its sleepy surroundings might suggest. The chef works with market gardeners and local producers to build dishes that pair sardines with blueberries or squab with strawberries, the kind of combinations that sound like a dare until they arrive. The front-of-house team is genuinely warm, which helps.

  8. Rank 2339. L'initial

    French

Stone walls, beamed ceilings, and hardwood floors set the scene at this classic French restaurant on a fountain square in the heart of Privas. The chef takes no liberties with the logic of French cooking, just quietly makes it more pleasurable, glazed sweetbreads arriving with fragrant jus and a lift of lemon zest. A summer terrace opens onto the square, and the two small dining rooms feel like they've always been there.

  9. Rank 2339. L'Initial

    French

Hardwood floors, exposed stone walls, and a beamed ceiling set the tone at this small French restaurant near the Seine in the 5th. The kitchen works squarely in the classical tradition, running glazed sweetbreads with fragrant jus alongside clean, unfussy desserts. In summer, tables spill onto the terrace, and the room fills with the kind of unhurried lunch that Paris does better than anywhere will admit.

  11. Rank 2339. L'insouciant

    Creative Bistro

A bistronomy spot near the Église Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc that shifts gears between lunch and dinner, casual plates by day and a more ambitious set menu once the sun goes down. The chef leans hard on local sourcing and has a particular fondness for spices and herbs, which gives the food an edge you don't always expect this far from Paris. The room is quiet and cosy, the kind of place where the cooking does all the talking.

  14. Rank 2339. L'Instant...

    Modern French

A terrace-side modern French restaurant just outside Toulouse that shifts gears between lunch and dinner, offering a compact set menu midday and a more ambitious tasting format come evening. The cooking leans quietly confident, with the kitchen pairing things like trout and cumin-laced split peas in ways that feel considered without announcing themselves. A good reason to rent a car for the afternoon.

  16. A young couple with serious pedigree, trained across Paris's grandest addresses, now run a single set menu out of a restored château in the Tarn countryside. The cooking leans on the kitchen garden and local terroir, though it wanders happily when the mood strikes. Five guestrooms sit upstairs for anyone who'd rather not think about the drive home, which, honestly, seems like the correct call.

  18. A no-choice set menu that rotates every two weeks around a single seasonal vegetable or fruit, so one visit might be an evening entirely in the company of the turnip, from mousseline to dessert. This modern restaurant in a village auberge has a bistro side for those who want something less committed, but the main event is the chef's tasting menu, where premium proteins show up as supporting cast to whatever the garden is doing right now.

  19. A compact bistro near the Abbaye aux Hommes where the chef's Caribbean roots and years of travel show up sideways in the cooking, never announced but quietly present. The menu moves between tuna tataki with wasabi mayo and roasted Camembert, which sounds like a contradiction until the food arrives and it isn't. Normandy comfort and a wider curiosity, held together by a kitchen that seems to know exactly what it's doing.

  20. Floor-to-ceiling windows face the beach huts and open sea, so the sunset does half the decorating at this coastal modern restaurant in Mers-les-Bains. Interior designer Caroline Tissier handled the rest in shades of blue and green, which feels either on-the-nose or exactly right, depending on your tolerance for thematic commitment. The chef runs a set menu built around Picardy seafood, scallops from small boats and pot-caught langoustines, kept simple and letting the ingredients argue for themselves.

  22. An old stone building in a village famous for its pink garlic, with timber ceilings, exposed walls, and a cast-iron stove doing real work in the lounge. It's a cosy modern-cuisine restaurant where the cooking moves between local and less obvious ingredients without making a fuss about either. The patio is there when the weather cooperates, and the wood fire is there when it doesn't.

  23. Rank 2339. L'Océan

    Seafood

A big glass conservatory right on the port at Le Croisic sets the scene at this old-school seafood restaurant, where the menu has barely needed to change because the Atlantic keeps delivering. The family has been running it forever, and the kitchen leans into the classics: sole meunière, whole seabass in a salt crust, scallops in season, and a lobster bisque that arrives with actual chunks of lobster in it.

  28. Rank 2339. L'Ormeau

    Seafood

Abalone is right there in the name, and the fleet that caught yours is visible from the terrace. This is a seafood restaurant on the Cancale quay, the kind of place where the argument for freshness is moored fifty meters away. Inside it's polished without being stiff, and the menu runs from oysters and razor clams to scallops roasted on the shell. The Breton pancake with warm apples keeps things properly local on the way out.

  29. Rank 2339. L'Ortensia

    Modern French

The name is Occitan for hydrangea, which tells you something about how seriously this place takes its roots. It's a modern French restaurant tucked into a village that takes some finding, run by a sister-and-brother team whose chef ranges freely across French regions, pulling duck from Landes and fish from Corsica into a bright conservatory dining room that opens onto a panoramic terrace.

    The awards

  30. Rank 2339. L'Osmose

    Modern French

Bare local stone walls and rough wood cladding set the tone at this snug village restaurant on the square in a postcard-pretty corner of Brittany. The chef runs a short, considered menu that moves between Breton ingredients and quieter exotic influences, the kind of cooking that feels more ambitious than the room suggests. The tasting menu is priced for people who actually live nearby, not for pilgrims passing through.

  31. Rank 2339. L'Oustalet Maïanen

    Provençal Mediterranean

Blown-glass panels of Léo Lelée's painted Arlésiennes are set into chandeliers made by a Murano glass artist, which gives this Provençal restaurant a quietly spectacular dining room even before the food arrives. The chef pulls produce from the Alpilles and Camargue, and the cooking lands somewhere between rustic and considered. Maillane was Frédéric Mistral's hometown, and the place leans into that cultural pride without making it a museum piece.

Stained-glass windows and coats of arms overhead, ramparts just outside: La Barbacane is a formal dining room inside a neo-Gothic hotel that takes its setting completely seriously. The kitchen leans Mediterranean, with fish and seafood doing most of the work, then game and mushrooms arriving when the season calls for them. Classical Languedoc cooking, updated rather than reinvented, served to people who dressed for dinner and meant it.

The terrace under the trees is where you want to be in fine weather, and the wine cellar runs deep on regional bottles.

    Southern French Mediterranean

The butter is house-made. So are the vinegars, the pickles, and most everything else, because the chef-owner runs a farm in Haute-Loire and trucks the harvest to Paris once a week. La Borie is a set-menu restaurant where the kitchen builds surprise menus around whatever arrived, so the seasons do the deciding. Dishes tend toward quiet simplicity rather than architectural drama, which takes more confidence than it looks.

This is the brasserie sibling of Villa Madie, running shorter set menus that change weekly and lean hard on market ingredients and surf-and-turf pairings. A medieval town of old stone and half-timbered houses is a fitting backdrop for this modern dining room, where the cooking is precise on the plate but genuinely indulgent in spirit. The format is a surprise tasting menu in three, five, or seven courses, each built from a different corner of the world, so the longer you go, the further you travel. A self-taught chef and his front-of-house partner run this refined Alsatian restaurant out of a small village, which is either charming or inconvenient depending on your GPS signal. The cooking leans into local terroir with a fine dining menu built around premium ingredients, though a bistronomy formula keeps things approachable midweek. Regulars come back for the bouillabaisse made with scallops, monkfish, and lobster. There's also a delicatessen on site.

A former ski-resort cinema turned modern restaurant, with a lounge bar on the ground floor for snacks and a warming drink, and the dining room arranged around an upper gallery of mezzanine tiers. The room has a theatrical past that the cooking seems to take as a challenge.

  95. A former butcher's shop that didn't wander far from its roots, this Marseille bistro puts meat at the center of everything: house-made pâté, fried black pudding, sausages, trotters. The chef trained in Paris and worked serious kitchens before landing here, and the natural wine list shows the same considered instincts. The room is relaxed and the service matches, which is exactly right for the food.

  96. Rank 2339. La Ferme aux Grives

    Traditional French

Cuts of meat and poultry turn on a spit over an open fireplace at this old village inn, where exposed beams, terracotta tiles, and a kitchen garden set the scene for the kind of rich, sauce-heavy regional cooking that makes you forget you were ever in a hurry. The pastry is buttery, the portions are generous, and in good weather the garden terrace opens up. Traditional French country dining, essentially unchanged and unbothered about it.

  97. A converted farmhouse high on the mountain with Mont Blanc framed in the window, this fine dining restaurant is run by a young couple who came up through serious kitchens before settling here. The set menu leans on the surrounding landscape: lake fish, river crayfish, forest game in season, with the occasional Piedmontese detour. Tablecloths, real glassware, that view.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
