An 18th-century mansion on the edge of Holyrood Park, carefully restored and quietly operating as a boutique hotel under the University of Edinburgh's surprisingly good hospitality arm. Rooms lean contemporary, deep colors and marble bathrooms, Scottish in feeling without a scrap of tartan in sight. Bonnar's handles modern Scottish cooking downstairs, and the Gallery Bar skews swanky. A Michelin Selected Hotel.

The Coral Room is a hotel bar in Bloomsbury that appears to have been painted by someone who was told pink was a personality. Afternoon tea with finger sandwiches gives way by evening to a crowd drinking champagne under a Murano chandelier, so a French 75 is the obvious order. The cocktail menu rotates, and prices sit around the high teens, which is London hotel bar for fair.

The tennis court is painted Wimbledon green and purple, which tells you everything about who owns this Victorian country house hotel in Stirlingshire. Andy Murray bought it because he grew up next door, and he's kept it properly traditional without veering into tartan overload. Twenty rooms, snooker, fishing, shooting, and Gleneagles a short drive away. It holds a Michelin Key.

A saltwater pool in a Georgian townhouse on the Isle of Wight is not something you see every day. Foresters Hall is a small, stylish hotel in Cowes, with rooms spread across the main house, an adjacent lodge, and garden suites by the pool. The owners came from the film industry, and the place shows it, with period Georgian details sitting alongside contemporary art collected over a well-traveled life. The cocktail bar opens onto the terrace. It holds a Michelin Key.

A Victorian country house hotel on 15 acres of Dee Valley parkland, with Snowdonia on the doorstep and, apparently, Queen Victoria's original bathtub still in situ. The rooms in the main house lean toward period grandeur; the coach-house Garden Suites go a bit more contemporary. The place is small enough that the service actually tracks you, without tipping into stuffy. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

The bar's name is, literally, a triangle, a square, and a circle. Everything else follows that logic: the space is built on Bauhaus principles, stripped to almost nothing, with no branded bottles on display and no concession to the usual cocktail bar theater. It lands somewhere on the World's 50 Best Bars list, which feels right for somewhere this committed to a concept. Come for serious, minimal drinks in a room that looks like a design school thesis, executed well.

A Victorian country house a few miles from Hadrian's Wall, converted into a hotel where the rooms split between the main house and the old stables, each done in classic furnishings softened with modern color. The surrounding fells invite walking, and the Cedar Tree Restaurant brings an Indian accent to the dinner table, which is not a detail you expect this close to a Roman ruin. Heated hardwood floors and exposed brick from a conversion that started as an actual carriage works, which explains the name of the hotel's own restaurant downstairs. This boutique hotel sits between Liverpool's two cathedrals in the cultural quarter, walkable from the Philharmonic Hall and the Tate. Rooms run to big beds in Egyptian cotton, rain showers, and Arne Jacobsen fittings, with top-floor suites looking out over the Mersey.

Four joined Regency townhouses in Nottingham's old lace-making quarter, now a boutique hotel with views of St. Mary's church and the Georgian law courts opposite. The look is contemporary-luxe rather than country-house chintz, with bespoke furnishings, wide sash windows, and bathrooms featuring freestanding tubs and rounded glass sinks. The studio suites span two levels and quietly retire the word "studio" from the conversation.

A loft-style hotel in a sleek East London tower, The Stratford is part of Marriott's Autograph Collection and sits right on top of Stratford International station, which tells you something about its ambitions. Rooms lean New York rather than Elizabethan, with Space Copenhagen furniture and enough square footage in the penthouse to feel faintly absurd. A fitness center with a full class schedule and several bars and restaurants round things out.

Rank 815. Napoli on the Road
Neapolitan Pizzeria
The dough here is the argument: light and airy in the Neapolitan style, built to carry toppings that are creative without tipping into chaos. This is a sit-down pizzeria in the thick of Soho, part of a small London group with locations in Chiswick and Richmond too. The menu shifts with the seasons and the sourcing is taken seriously. It topped the 50 Top Pizza Europe list, which is the kind of thing that fills a room fast on a weeknight.

A village pub, a chip shop, a post office, and a working farm walk into a boutique hotel. That's more or less what Michael and Xochi Birch have assembled in a sleepy North Devon village, spreading their accommodations across shop rooms styled in 1940s retro and freestanding cottages that sleep up to eight. The Farmers Arms anchors it all with a seriously sourced modern pub menu. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

Rank 817. Burro
Italian
The name means butter, which gives you a reasonable preview of the cooking philosophy at this Italian restaurant tucked into a secluded courtyard off Floral Street in Covent Garden. High ceilings and a terrace keep it feeling more civilised than the tourist bustle outside would suggest. The team behind Trullo in Islington opened this, and the tiramisu doughnuts have already become a talking point among the sort of people who track these things.

More than 250 whiskies line the walls of Bar 1745, which tells you something about the priorities here. SCHLOSS Roxburghe is a sprawling Scottish Borders estate hotel where the default afternoon involves clay pigeon shooting, salmon fishing, or croquet on the lawn, and the spa folds in archery and estate walks alongside the usual treatments. Rooms split between the historic manor and a contemporary estate house, most with golf course or parkland views.

Counter seats facing the open kitchen are the ones to angle for at this Soho izakaya, where the vibe tips firmly toward cold beer and loosened collars after dark. The team behind Roji opened it recently, and the robata grill and deep-fryer do most of the talking: fried chicken, duck udon, red shrimp off the coals. Small, lively, and not the place for a quiet conversation.

British Cocktail Bar
Vintage vinyl lines the shelves and a pair of decks sits tucked behind the bar, which tells you something about how seriously this Mayfair cocktail bar takes atmosphere. It lives inside the restaurant Nijū but operates on its own quiet logic, the kind of place where the hospitality anticipates what you need before you say it. The drinks are inventive without being showy, and the room feels more like a living room than a scene.

A hotel that floats on an inlet off the Royal Victoria Docks, having arrived by barge from the Netherlands via the North Sea, which is quite a commute. Rooms are compact and industrial, all steel, concrete, and clean wood, with the better ones waking you up to Thames views. The rooftop terrace, green and long, is where the skyline really opens up. The team trains long-term unemployed Londoners in hospitality, so the name is a statement, not a slogan.

A white grand piano sits in the Lennon Suite, which tells you this Beatles-themed boutique hotel near the Cavern Club is playing it straight rather than camp. The portraits and memorabilia are central to the appeal, but the rooms are genuinely plush, with Hypnos beds and mod design that would hold up even if you'd never heard "Help." The restaurant and cocktail lounge pull a local crowd well beyond the pilgrim trade.

A row of honey-colored Georgian townhouses on South Parade, turned into a hotel that takes its local roots more seriously than most. Rooms mix period styling with modernist flourishes and Hypnos beds, while the subterranean suites have rough stone walls that feel more Bath than boutique brochure. The Elder, the in-house restaurant, does contemporary British cooking with a whole-animal ethos. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

Guinness bread ice cream sounds like a dare, but at Cafe Cecilia it has quietly become the thing people talk about on the way home. This bright, airy restaurant in Dalston sits beneath a modern apartment block but carries itself with a quasi-industrial warmth that papers over that fact nicely. The menu is seasonal and unfussy, letting ingredients do the work, with blackboard specials rounding out what the kitchen feels like cooking that day.

Eight rooms in the Perthshire countryside, an hour and a half from Edinburgh or Glasgow, and the kitchen is pulling most of its ingredients from a sister farm down the road. The Grandtully Hotel by Ballintaggart holds a Michelin Key and runs like a Scottish agriturismo: small, food-focused, and genuinely rooted in the land around it. Spanish
A wood-clad, firelit Spanish restaurant tucked inside a boutique hotel on Quay Street, built around an asador grill that earns its place at the centre of the room. Squid, celeriac, and rump steak all go over charcoal, and the wine list runs almost exclusively Spanish, with producers obscure enough to feel like a discovery. Grab a seat overlooking the grill or the glass-fronted wine cave, and let someone else order the boquerones with yuzu dressing so you can steal a bite.

A Filipino bistro on Kentish Town Road where the menu is short enough to read twice and still leave you in genuine trouble deciding. The cooking is bold and a little unexpected, the kind that makes you want to come back before you've even paid the bill. Cantonese
No reservations, a queue out the door by noon, and a gazebo on the pavement that somehow makes waiting feel intentional. This small, family-run Cantonese spot on King's Cross Road keeps things simple and unadorned, with a wide menu of carefully cooked dishes that reward the patient. An hour in the queue is not unusual, but the team moves things along, and the room is lively enough to make you feel smug for staying.

Heaneys is a Pontcanna tasting-menu restaurant doing Welsh cooking with a Japanese accent, and it somehow avoids the usual hostage-situation pacing. The meal starts with snacks, including a puffed scallop crisp that behaves like an elegant prawn cracker, and the house sourdough arrives with Marmite butter. The dining room is dark and slightly boardroom, but the staff keep it warm. It's a Michelin Guide selected restaurant.

Wine Bar
A Pontcanna neighbourhood bistro where the blackboard changes, the natural wine list runs deep, and the cooking leans heavily on vegetables without making a fuss about it. Weekday lunches are sandwiches; evenings and weekends step up to proper plates built around what's good. Salt marsh lamb, chard, braised carrot, that sort of thing: hearty and pared back. The wines on tap draw the kind of regulars who actually read the lesser-known selections before ordering.

The Rivoli is the cocktail lounge off the Ritz lobby, where gold is less a colour than a house rule, right down to the leaf floating in the fizzing Ritz 110. Velvet leopard-print chairs add some mischief to the glamour. Expect a hotel-bar price tag and the sort of people-watching that makes you wish a Bravo camera crew were seated nearby, mid-Gibson, discussing a settlement. Champagne cocktails are the obvious move, given the address.

A quiet row of converted Victorian townhouses on a residential Glasgow street, Hotel du Vin at One Devonshire Gardens runs on mahogany four-posters and high-pressure rain showers rather than flashy design or packed nightclubs. The 49 rooms are spacious and elegant without being precious, and the bistro and whisky bar give you a reason to linger downstairs. Visiting actors and pop stars are regulars, which the hotel is too well-mannered to advertise.

A Victorian mansion with the good sense not to take itself seriously, The Bird is a 29-room boutique hotel where bold prints, animal imagery, and a cheerful collision of modern and antique fill rooms named by size from Dinky on up. Bath Rugby's stadium is a short walk away, and the terrace fills up nicely on match days. The Michelin Guide has it among its selected hotels, which feels about right for a place doing its level best to be the anti-Bath hotel in Bath.

Freestanding tubs positioned beside the bed is a design choice that says something about the room's priorities, and Hotel Indigo Leeds leans into it fully. This IHG boutique on Lower Briggate runs to cream channeled headboards, walnut cabinetry, and deep teal walls, with vintage Leeds prints keeping things local. The Banksia Bar handles Mediterranean plates and cocktails downstairs. Shops, nightlife, and cultural spots are steps away, and Leeds Bradford Airport is ten miles north.

A former bus and train depot converted into a boutique hotel, with wrought-iron staircases and chocolate-and-taupe carpets that lean warmer and moodier than the typical design-hotel playbook. Malmaison's Liverpool outpost was their first new build rather than a renovation, which for a chain built on reclaiming unlikely spaces is genuinely its own kind of statement. The hotel sits on the waterfront at Princes Dock, all rich wood paneling and deep black-and-violet bedrooms with boutique trappings throughout. There's a brasserie, a gym, and a bar that draws the local media and celebrity-adjacent crowd. Prices stay in line with the rest of the chain's budget-luxe approach.

The red brick and terracotta facade has been Grade II-listed since the railway barons threw civic soirées here, and the renovation kept the cornicing intact while adding brass bedside lighting and burgundy rugs to the 125 rooms. This is a proper full-service hotel in central Leeds, with a bar, ballroom, and nine event rooms. Yorkshire Tea in the kettle is a small but telling sign of where the independent ownership puts its attention.

The kitchen garden alone could justify the drive out to Oxfordshire. Raymond Blanc's fine dining manor house sits in 15th-century stone and looks every inch the English country retreat, but the cooking is thoroughly French, rooted in classical technique and whatever the garden gives up that morning. Arrive early enough to walk the grounds before your table is called; the vegetables on your plate were growing an hour ago.

The Bellinis are lifted straight from Harry's Bar in Venice, which tells you something about the room's aspirations. C is a polished Italian restaurant in Mayfair where the menu runs to buffalo mozzarella, hand-cut pasta, and roast chicken alla veneta, and the crowd has the relaxed confidence of people who eat here on someone else's card. Cocktail Bar
A vintage London Underground carriage parked in the middle of a Soho cocktail bar sets the tone early. Cahoots leans hard into its 1940s Blitz-era conceit, with a speakeasy vibe, live music, and vintage DJs to keep the period piece from feeling static. The cocktail list matches the theme, all rum and bourbon combinations with theatrical names. You'll need to book ahead for entry, which, at a bar built around a secret, feels about right.

French Cocktail Bar
Vintage coins pressed under the bar top set the tone at this Bethnal Green cocktail bar, where the room splits neatly between neighbourhood ease and something more considered. The French accent runs deep, calvados showing up in more places than you might expect, but the drinks are built to be enjoyed rather than admired. Rose velvet banquettes, candelabra on every table, and a room so dim you'd miss it if you weren't looking: Kitty Fisher's is a small, romantic restaurant tucked into Shepherd Market that runs on British and Spanish instincts at once. The ocakbasi grill is still the heart of the room, but Mangal 2 has come a long way from its Dalston kebab-house origins. The sons of the founder, one of them fresh from Copenhagen's Noma orbit, took over and quietly rewired the whole operation. The places on either side also show 71. This one's exact Score is 70.7, the one above is 70.8 and the one below is 70.6, so it ranks between them. We round what you see, but we rank on the exact number.

A Regency townhouse on Clifton, preserved well enough that the bones still do the work, houses this 39-room boutique hotel. Rooms run from snug-but-plush singles up to suites carved from a former drawing room and library. There's a spa, a restaurant, a bar with a sun terrace, and a lounge devoted to afternoon tea, which in England is not a whim but a constitutional right.

Northern Ireland's first "hometel" sits on Queen Street, splitting the difference between a serviced apartment and a city hotel across 175 rooms. The 24-hour room policy means you get the full day, not the usual noon-or-never panic. Kitchenette studios, blackout Sleepwell rooms, and family lofts with bunk beds cover most situations. Winnie's café and bar draws locals in every evening with live music, which keeps the place from feeling like a transit lounge.

A listed Victorian landmark in the center of Belfast, the Merchant is a boutique hotel that went full opulent rather than the wry-furniture-and-exposed-brick route its peers can't resist. Classic interiors, everything sparkling underneath the grandeur. The Great Room handles formal dining, the Cloth Ear runs pub-casual, and Bert's Jazz Bar accounts for at least one late night you hadn't planned on. Location is as central as Belfast gets.

The rooftop bar looks out over one of the more famously dreamy skylines in England, which is a difficult opening act for any hotel to follow. Fortunately, The Store Oxford, occupying the building that was once a beloved department store, is a contemporary luxury hotel that leans into its own past, with rooms that quietly nod to the building's retail history. A subterranean spa and a ground-floor bar spilling onto Broad Street round things out nicely.

A converted Victorian tobacco warehouse on the Stanley Dock waterfront, the Titanic Hotel keeps its nautical references tastefully in check, which is more than can be said for the millionth person who's made the iceberg joke at the Rum Bar. Rooms are large, beds are serious, and the architecture blends period stonework with contemporary furnishings without breaking a sweat. Stanley's Bar & Grill opens onto a waterfront terrace that earns its reputation on its own terms.

The walls here don't do neutral. Designer Russell Sage fitted this Highland country house hotel in maximalist, theatrical color, making it the loudest room in an otherwise very tweedy neighborhood. Each bedroom is different, all of them thoroughly luxurious, and dinner is served at a communal table with the kind of local produce the Highlands does well. The whisky connection, unsurprisingly, is not neglected. It holds a Michelin Key.

The main house is built in that warm Sutherland sandstone, has been around forever, and sits within easy walking distance of both the beach and town. A fine-dining restaurant called Mara is on-site, and the Michelin Guide has awarded it one Key. Small, characterful, and unapologetically golf-first.

Two Victorian warehouses in the heart of Belfast, converted into a 64-room boutique hotel that leans hard into dark, candlelit atmosphere: black velvet, porthole windows, and a brasserie where the tables are hidden behind solid partitions so you can actually talk. The rooms run to rich reds and brown leather, nothing avant-garde, just very comfortable beds and generous rain showers. The Samson suite throws in a billiard table, presumably for the mornings.

A Gothic Victorian mansion on the Thames where guests pick the vinyl, eat wherever they like across six fireplace-lit sitting rooms, and drink from a 24-hour bar. A luxury boutique hotel sitting right next to the Grand Opera House, with a stately facade that gives little away. A Regency villa in Cheltenham's Montpellier quarter, all tall windows and period stonework on the outside, and something considerably darker and moodier once you're through the door. The 61 rooms lean into the Malmaison formula of moody palettes and over-upholstered comfort, which suits the spa-town-with-a-streak crowd just fine. Thirteen rooms in a Georgian townhouse facing Pittville Park, each one different but all stocked with Bramley bath products and Nespresso machines, with a rolltop tub in some. David Bowie married Angie in this building, which is all the origin story a 23-room hotel in Bromley could ever need. The early 20th-century Old Town Hall has been restored with its stained glass, soaring ceilings, and wood paneling intact, with art deco touches folded into the newer sections. Rooms are compact and quietly considered, with CBD-infused teas and adjustable shower pressure among the small details that make the difference.

Next door to Hampton Court Palace, this 36-room hotel was originally built to house the overflow from a royal court, which gives it a leg up on most places claiming historic character. Nicola Harding's maximalist interiors lean cheerful rather than stuffy, and every room, from the entry-level classics up to the Henry VIII suite, is done out differently. A boat on the Thames or a wander through the palace gardens fills the afternoon nicely.

A Grade II-listed former dye mill on the River Avon, Timbrell's Yard is a small hotel in Bradford-on-Avon that leans into the setting without overdoing it. Stone fireplaces and oak beams downstairs, sheepskins and patchwork tiles in the rooms, and the better ones come with freestanding tubs and floor-to-ceiling windows over the water. A converted riverside warehouse on the Tyne, the Malmaison is the kind of hotel that greets you with a French-speaking lift and a Parisian-style brasserie, which feels both slightly absurd and entirely correct for Newcastle's Quayside. Rooms are plush without being stiff, beds are enormous, and several look straight out over the river. The vibe is smart but relaxed, skipping the stuffiness that tends to come with the thread count.

Rank 897. Bocca di Lupo
Italian
The marble counter running along the open kitchen is the seat to ask for at this long-running Soho Italian, where the menu lists each dish's region of origin as if the boot itself were the organizing principle. The cooking leans into classic technique, the room hums most nights, and the service keeps pace. When dessert comes up, they run Gelupo, an ice cream shop across the street, which is a tidy arrangement.

Eight rooms inside a converted chapel in Bruton, the little Somerset town that's been quietly having a moment since Hauser & Wirth moved in.
