The Best Places to Eat and Drink in the United States

Eat + Drink, change section

  1. Rank 3502. Itria

    Italian

Itria takes its name from an ancient Syrian word for pasta, which tells you something about how seriously the kitchen takes the subject. This modern Italian fine dining spot on 24th Street runs a tight menu built around crudo and house-made pasta, where a light, unfussy hand does most of the convincing. Bar seating lines the center corridor, and a communal wood table anchors the back, giving the room an easy, convivial feel.

  2. Bottiglia is a Tuscan enoteca out in Henderson whose weekend brunch doubles as a dress-code experiment, with a sunny dining room full of groups in their flashiest outfits working through bottomless mimosas and Aperol spritzes. A shellfish tower shares the table with avocado toast, and dessert is a chocolate stiletto made of ladyfingers and mascarpone, which is a sentence you only get to say at brunch.

  3. This is the Strip outpost of a Mexico City seafood institution, a sit-down dinner place where the pescado a la talla arrives butterflied and painted half green, half red, which tends to start a debate at the table. Since this is Vegas, the menu adds red meat, so wagyu tenderloin tacos and a beef aguachile share space with the tuna tostadas. Dress like you're impressing someone, because the whole fish encourages it.

  4. Rank 3505. Alice B.

    Californian Mediterranean

Candlelit stone tables and cushioned banquettes set the mood at this modern California-Mediterranean restaurant inside Palm Springs' Living Out community. Sue Feniger and Mary Sue Milliken run the kitchen, turning out wood-roasted seafood and hand-rolled pastas with the kind of ease that makes it look unfair. The Michelin Guide has it selected, and the Los Angeles Times put it on their 101 best in California list for 2025.

  5. Rank 3506. Abba Coffee Roasters

    Korean Coffee Shop

This Pearl District coffee shop roasts its own beans and takes cues from Korean cafe culture, which means the seasonal menu might involve shiso, gochujang, or a toasted rice latte with housemade syrup. The pour-overs are precise and the space is all polished concrete and floor-to-ceiling windows, so the laptop crowd settles in while neighbors dart through for matcha, as if the place were a pit stop.

  6. A quiet neighborhood coffee shop on its namesake avenue that, for regulars who know Portland's coffee history, carries some serious backstory: this was where much of the third-wave scene got sorted out. These days it's a warm, unhurried spot to order a Coava latte and take a picnic table outside. The ambition is still in the cup; the scene has mellowed considerably.

  7. Rank 3506. Aroom Coffee

    Vietnamese Coffee Shop

Aroom is a Vietnamese coffee shop on Stone Way where the drink is brewed through a small metal phin that drips slowly into condensed milk, so patience comes standard. The menu then gets creative, with an egg coffee that drinks like custard, a sesame latte with tahini cream, and a salty coffee for people who think sweetness needs a rebuttal. A second branch on the Waterfront draws a steady line.

  8. Rank 3506. Backbar

    Cocktail Bar

Backbar is a cocktail bar tucked down a concrete hallway behind a steel door in Union Square, which is how you know the drinks are serious. Weekends bring a line of people waiting to find out what the menu is themed around this month, sometimes an animation studio, with drinks named for scenes. Tell the bartender your mood and let them handle the translation, because the ingredient lists read like a botany final.

  9. Rank 3506. Banshee

    New American

Pepperoni butter served by the pint is a solid thesis statement for any restaurant. Banshee is a creative New American spot in East Atlanta where wood floors and whitewashed brick keep things grounded while the kitchen goes in unexpected directions, small plates and pasta sharing the menu with seasonal vegetables that actually pull their weight. The New York Times put it on their Atlanta list, and the crowd that fills it most nights seems to know something you might not yet.

  10. Rank 3506. Barrel Proof

    Cocktail Bar

Low-lit and unhurried on Magazine Street at the edge of the Lower Garden District, Barrel Proof is a neighborhood whiskey and cocktail bar that lets its bottles do the talking. The bourbon list runs deep, the cocktail menu stays short and confident, and food comes from rotating pop-ups rather than a kitchen. A James Beard semifinalist for Outstanding Restaurateur, which is an unusual nod for a place this deliberately unshowy.

  11. Barrel Proof is a small Germantown bar where the name tells you what's on the shelf and the wall of brown liquor does the rest. Seasonal cocktails and a covered patio make it easy to lose an afternoon, and the crowd runs from post-workout regulars to birthday tables to tourists trying to figure out bourbon. The kimchi-loaded fries with sambal mayo are the move, especially at happy hour.

  14. Rank 3506. Boomtown Coffee

    Craft Coffee

The Shakarato, espresso shaken with agave, orange, and bitters, is a good reason to wander into this craft coffee shop on 19th Street. Small-batch beans get roasted and brewed with the kind of attention that makes ordering drip feel like a decision. Avocado toast and seasonal veggie tacos cover the hunger angle, and the pastries are the sort you eat standing at the counter before you've found a seat.

  16. Rank 3506. Brewhouse

    Beer Bar

Little Five Points' go-to soccer bar, Brewhouse draws Atlanta United faithful and international match crowds to a room that takes cricket and rugby as seriously as the Premier League. The beer list runs deep across local, domestic, and imported options, and the Painkiller cocktail comes in three levels of commitment. Wings, nachos, and fish and chips keep things grounded. Wear whatever you'd wear to the match.

  17. A Caffe Vita coffee shop attached to the KEXP radio station, so you can watch DJs work the booth while you wait on a latte, with the Space Needle hovering nearby in case you forgot what city you're in. It's the sort of place where you could wander in for a cortado and leave with a strong opinion about a B-side. Couches and tables are usually available, and there's a cheap-drip morning deal for early weekday risers.

  18. Rank 3506. Cardoon

    Coffee

Cardoon is a tiny coffee shop on the ground floor of an apartment building on Market Street, easy to walk past if you're looking for something louder. The menu splits between German and Chinese cooking, so the streuselkuchen comes with white miso on top. The Seaweed Latte contains no seaweed, just soy sauce caramel. It also pours beer and wine, which makes it a coffee shop that can handle an evening.

  23. Rank 3506. Dino's

    Burger Joint

Dino's is an East Nashville dive that has been feeding the after-hours crowd since the 1970s, mostly with gooey cheeseburgers meant to talk a hangover out of existing. You can sit at a diner table in the dim main room or out on the covered patio, and the punk rock restroom is considered part of the visit. The bar pours Coors, Shiner Bock, and mezcal, Campari, even Malort, and the line peaks right after the bars close.

  30. Rank 3506. El Buen Comer

    Mexico City Mexican

Handmade corn tortillas arrive warm at every table, which tells you most of what you need to know about this homestyle Mexico City restaurant on the outer edge of the Mission. The chef, a La Cocina alum, built the menu around guisados, the slow-braised stews that define home cooking in the capital. It's the kind of place where the salsas are made in-house and the chocoflan is non-negotiable.

  31. Exquisite Creatures is a plant-based coffee shop in the Central Eastside where the seasonal drink menu reads like a dare, and the orange Tootsie Pop latte is the one people mention first. It all runs on house-roasted espresso, which keeps the strawberry-jalapeño matcha from collapsing into a bit. There are pastries and sandwiches, plenty of foliage, and an unhurried pace for a coffee order that costs a few dollars.

  32. Fifth Vessel is a small, bright coffee shop near the bayou, furnished with midcentury classroom desks and tropical flowers, so you'll feel like a very caffeinated student on a field trip. The rotating specials have names like the Duvet, a clove and cinnamon flat white, and there's a long matcha list. Outlets are scarce and the laptop crowd knows it, so arrive early if you plan to work.

  34. The sunken firepit shoots flames over a pool of sky-blue water, which tells you most of what you need to know about the Fireside Lounge. It's a lounge bar at the Peppermill, frozen in an era of plastic plants, purple mood lighting, and couch fabric that looks like stone. Tiki drinks arrive in 64-ounce fishbowls. Bon Jovi videos play overhead. The crowd is hard-drinking and completely unbothered, which is the only correct response.

  35. Hand-carved wooden statues, glowing pufferfish lamps, and tree-trunk chairs that take two people to lift set the tone at this classic tiki bar off Charleston. The drinks are ranked by booziness on a five-skull scale, which is the kind of menu design that tells you everything you need to know. Most people clutching souvenir mugs near the back came here on purpose, on something of a pilgrimage, and they planned the whole trip around it.

  36. Futura is a Montavilla coffee shop done up in ivory and beige, with enough tables that you can spread a laptop, a notebook, and a minor existential crisis without bumping anyone. The menu leans on phrases like "regenerative agriculture," which you can nod along to while ordering a latte with hibiscus-rose syrup. The choripán breakfast sandwich, all garlic aioli and chimichurri, handles lunch before noon. There's a second branch in Arbor Lodge.

  37. Ghost Note is a Capitol Hill coffee shop where the espresso drinks come with a plot twist, like a cold one built on almond milk and orange blossom honey that finishes with grapefruit aromatics. Nothing here is a plain latte wearing a sweater. It's the kind of menu where you read the board twice, and the drinks are photogenic enough that half the room has already taken a picture before the first sip.

  38. Rank 3506. haley.henry wine bar

    Natural Wine Bar

This is a narrow natural-wine bar near Downtown Crossing, the sort of place that introduced a lot of Boston to tinned fish and has been quietly smug about it since. The list is long and a little nerdy, but the bartenders will talk you through it without making you feel graded. Half bottles of nearly everything let you change your mind twice. It was a James Beard semifinalist for its wine program, and on Wednesdays there are fancy hot dogs.

  39. Rank 3506. Holy Nata

    Portuguese Bakery

A side-street specialist selling exactly one thing: warm pasteis de nata, four to a box. The shells shatter like good pastry should, and the custard filling runs thick enough that the Chronicle grouped it with the best bakeries in the Bay Area. Plain or dusted with cinnamon are the standing options, with a Nutella variation showing up on Thursdays for anyone who needs a reason to plan their week around a bakery.

  40. Rank 3506. Kalesa Coffee

    Filipino Coffee Shop

Kalesa Coffee is a tiny Filipino coffee shop on the ground floor of a brick office building in Eliot, and finding it means spotting a horse sign and walking through a gate that is, reassuringly, unlocked. The drinks lean on Filipino flavors, like cold brew crowned with violet ube cream and an espresso tonic sharpened with calamansi. The guava empanadas in the pastry case tend to vanish, so arrive early or make peace with it.

  41. Rank 3506. Kiyomi

    Sushi

The chef behind this 16-seat omakase counter built his D.C. following at a food hall, which is a slightly unglamorous origin story for something this polished. Kiyomi is a proper sushi counter now, with a weekday lunch omakase that remains the kind of deal that makes regulars feel like insiders, and a Friday dinner omakase for anyone who wants the full, unhurried version.

  43. Rank 3506. Kyoko Coffee

    Japanese Coffee Shop

A Honda van parked at the Highland Collective, serving drinks with names like Cause of Death alongside miso piloncillo lattes and umami mochas. Kyoko Coffee is a Japanese-inspired coffee van that runs on the premise that your cup should be at least a little surprising. The standard cortados and cappuccinos are there if you want them, but the ube milk and the oddball flavor combinations are clearly why the regulars come back.

  45. Rank 3506. Las Perras Cafe

    Latina-owned Coffee

  46. Le Loup is a cocktail bar perched above The Optimist, decked out like a submarine, so you can drink a martini and feel mildly nautical about it. The menu devotes a whole section to martinis, and there are towering barstools, cozy booths, shrimp cocktail, and fries that Nashville has opinions about. Bananas foster gets flambéed tableside, which is a nice way to remind everyone the sea is flammable. After 10pm the snacks give way to sandwiches.

  47. Rank 3506. Less and More coffee

    Unusual Coffee

A coffee shop built inside a former bus shelter, which explains the glass roof and the wraparound doors still in place. The drinks lean into ingredients like black sesame cream, mugwort, and ube alongside straight espresso for the unconvinced. Pastries come from Bakeshop, and the farmers market crowd pours in on weekends. A fine place to stand at the corner and feel like a local, even if the bus never comes.

  48. Rank 3506. Lilia Comedor

    Pacific Northwest Mexican

Blue corn masa dumplings crowned with black trumpet mushrooms, marigold petals from the chef's garden, and a menu that changes every week: Lilia Comedor moves at the pace of what's actually growing. It's a relaxed sit-down restaurant where Mexican American cooking meets Pacific Northwest ingredients, handled with the kind of technical precision that makes the combination feel inevitable rather than conceptual.

  50. The Garden Oaks flagship is a two-story coffee shop that also runs roasting classes if you'd like to graduate from customer to participant. Cold brew and Spanish lattes are the draws, alongside breakfast croissants that give people a reason to arrive before noon. Luce has spread across Houston and its suburbs, which tells you something about how the neighborhood took to it.

  51. A coffee shop and cocktail bar where the menu refuses to pick a lane, and that's the whole point. Weekend brunch runs from oysters with aguachile granita to chilaquiles and lobster rolls, while the drinks column blurs the line with carajillos and cold-brew shakерatos. The Caesar cups, eaten by hand, are a specific kind of commitment. A Rex Hospitality project in the Sawyer Yards neighborhood.

  52. Monorail is a walk-up espresso window on Pike Street, which means no seats, no laptops, and no one claiming a table for the afternoon. It's among Seattle's earliest espresso carts and has been pulling shots since before the city made coffee its entire personality. Order the nutty, chocolatey house blend or a brighter pourover, then drink it standing on the sidewalk like a local.

  53. Provecho! is a coffee shop and roastery in Logan Heights, working out of a former bread factory that now doubles as an art center. The piloncillo latte gets its brown-butter depth from house-made syrup, and the black sesame latte is toasty in a way that suits the room. You'll sip it while stepping around charred metal sculptures and abstract watercolors, which is a more interesting obstacle course than most coffee lines.

This all-day Latin American spot on Florida Avenue runs from morning coffee through dinner without any of the fuss, and the price point reflects that. Upstairs, an intimate room with original details fills with regulars chasing the pork empanadas and masa gnocchi with braised beef.

  56. Rank 3506. Santa's Pub

    Beer Bar

A beer-only karaoke bar in a double-wide trailer that stays decorated for Christmas through every month of the year, run by an owner who looks exactly like the name on the door. Expect PBR, Miller Lite, and a seltzer, cash only, with an ATM outside for the optimistic. The karaoke rules are strict: no cussing, smoking, or drinking while you hold the mic. The Infatuation named it one of Nashville's best bars.

  57. Schulman's is a neighborhood dive bar dressed as the finished basement of your friend's cool parents, with stained glass lampshades, a lacquered bar, and leather booths that have seen things. The martinis run twelve dollars, there's a double cheeseburger and a pickle beer, and the backyard is built for smokers holding frozen margaritas. Nashville Scene named it Best New Bar in 2024.

  58. The cold drip is made to order and poured over ice in front of you, which is either theater or reassurance depending on how many times you've been handed yesterday's batch somewhere else. This Downtown coffee shop leans into iced drinks and frappe-style blends, with oat milk as the default and brown sugar, honey, or cinnamon doing most of the flavor work. Breakfast tacos and pastries fill out the menu, and grab-and-go bottles cover the days when patience runs short.

  59. Anne Quatrano, who quietly rewired Atlanta's dining scene, runs this market and cafe out of an industrial building that somehow feels like exactly the right place for it. Grab a breakfast biscuit or a fried egg sandwich on a soft roll, pick up hand pies and cookies, then linger by the cheese case and the farm eggs before grabbing something to make your kitchen look more intentional. The New York Times named it one of Atlanta's 25 best restaurants.

  60. Steady State is a Carlsbad coffee shop with enough indoor and outdoor tables that finding a seat to open a laptop and look busy is rarely the hard part. Travelers coming down from LA tend to cross paths with people running up from San Diego, all of them caffeinating. The cold brew is the draw, there's a foamy chai latte with a ginger kick, and sandwich specials rotate. Pastries from the bakery around the corner are the local workaround.

  61. Rank 3506. Steam Espresso Bar

    Stylish Coffee

Garage doors fold open onto a flower-covered patio at this Platt Park coffee shop, which doubles as a rotating gallery for local artists. The line can spill onto the sidewalk on weekends, and no one seems to mind. Locally roasted coffee, fresh-pressed juice, baked goods, and oatmeal keep the options honest. The LoHi outpost occupies an old firehouse, which is a hard aesthetic to argue with.

  62. Light-roast single origins anchor the menu at this Alphabet District coffee shop, where the room manages to feel both polished and lived-in. The shelves are stacked with brewing gear and merch for the home obsessive, and regulars who already know their order fill the space with the easy hum of a neighborhood that's claimed its café. Eater named it among Portland's top coffee shops, which will surprise no one who's been in on a Tuesday morning.

  63. Rank 3506. Stray Pirate

    Dog-Inspired Tiki Bar

The walls of this pirate-themed tiki bar are hung with portraits of distinguished canine buccaneers, which alone tells you something about the commitment level here. The lore involves a cursed ship, a sea witch, and a crew turned into dogs, and it's fully committed to the bit without letting the theatrics crowd out the drinks. Traditional tiki pours sit alongside inventive originals, and the cocktail menu earns its keep on its own terms.

  64. The light pours through floor-to-ceiling windows in a way that makes everyone look like they're having a good morning, even before the coffee. Sunday Press is an all-day café with a drive-through, a solid espresso program, and a menu that stretches to açai bowls and sandwiches for when coffee alone won't cut it. Come evening it quietly becomes a cocktail lounge, which is either convenient or dangerous depending on your schedule.

  67. Muddy Waters and B.B. King both played this no-frills blues bar near Chinatown, which tells you something about the room. Live music runs every night of the week, and between sets the crowd shoots pool and orders pizza to soak up the local craft beer. The seasonal Halloween and Christmas pop-ups have become their own draw, which is a funny fate for a place with that kind of history, but the bar handles both versions of itself with ease.

  69. A bowl of sesame seeds arrives at the table for you to grind yourself before stirring them into the tonkatsu sauce, which tells you what kind of katsu shop this is. The pork is carefully sourced, the panko is made in-house, and the rice comes from Hokkaido. Reservations are hard to come by, which matters in a city where locals can get a perfectly decent plate-lunch katsu for half the price.

  70. Rank 3506. Torque

    Coffee

Torque is a specialty coffee shop on El Cajon Boulevard that treats choosing a roast like a lab exercise. The menu is a four-quadrant matrix, classic or modern, lively or syrupy, and those two decisions are your whole homework for the day. Hardcore coffee people line up to compare espresso notes, and there's a palo santo honey latte with a cedar accent for anyone who'd rather skip the chemistry. Bags of the roasts are for sale.

  71. Rank 3506. Tōv Coffee

    Egyptian Café

This Hawthorne coffee shop brews its Egyptian coffee with cardamom in a tray of hot sand, which makes your usual drip look like it isn't trying. The room is all jewel tones and Persian rugs, and the cardamom latte and rose mocha come with a square of semolina cake. It used to live in a double-decker bus, so the sand tray is a rather natural next step.

  72. Rank 3506. Twelve Mile Limit

    Cocktail Bar

The handwritten sign taped to the door reads "Ring Buzzer, Pull Door," which sets expectations accordingly. What's inside this Mid City cocktail dive runs against every signal the prefab exterior sends: serious drinks, a warm room, and a neighborhood crowd that has clearly been coming here since the block was still drying out. It's relaxed in the way only a bar that doesn't need to prove itself can manage.

  73. Rank 3506. Un Caffe

    Coffee

A frozen coffee bear rides the top of the iced citrus Americano here, keeping the drink cold without diluting it, which tells you everything about how seriously this Midtown coffee shop thinks about a cup. The beans are sourced globally and roasted in-house, and the room runs warm enough that regulars tend to linger. Somewhere between a neighborhood hangout and a serious roaster's project.

  74. URL Coffee is a small First Hill cafe where the stools are made from skateboard decks, which is about as punk as a place this carefully designed is going to get. The room is bright and sleek and reads bigger than it is. The menu skips elaborate custom drinks and puts its energy into house-made sweet cream, stirred into espresso or poured over iced coffee. Seats are scarce, so claim one before ordering the tomato ricotta toast.

  76. The dining room is dressed as a Seoul street corner, bus station facades and all, which either tells you everything or nothing until you're sitting inside it with a plate of chicken buldak in front of you. Noori Pocha is a Korean pojangmacha-style restaurant, the kind built around the late-night, post-work food cart tradition, with a menu to match. The New York Times put it on their 2024 Restaurant List, and the K-pop soundtrack makes that feel completely reasonable.

  77. The gumbo arrives with a crab claw jutting out of the bowl like it owns the place, surrounded by fat rounds of okra and a cloud of white rice. This Creole soul food cafe sits down the street from NASA, has signage that will not help you find it, and is on The New York Times Restaurant List. The fried catfish barely fits the plate, and the chef named the whole operation after his grandmothers, which tells you something about the cooking.

  78. Rank 3593. China Live

    Chinese

A high-ceilinged casual dining room with sizzling woks going on what feels like a hawker center's worth of burners at once, China Live sprawls across multiple floors of Chinatown to fit in a retail section, a cocktail bar, and a fine dining room besides. The main floor does Chinese cooking in several regional styles, from scallion breads rolled like cinnamon buns to mapo tofu that earns the word tingly. Chatty tourists fill the place, which seems to suit everyone just fine.

  79. Rank 3593. Edan Bistro

    Modern Basque

Edan Bistro is a casual Basque restaurant in North Miami, set in a room with bare walls and the decor ambitions of a dentist's waiting area. The decorating budget clearly went into the kitchen, which sends out croquetas and ribeyes in the manner of the San Sebastian spots it's compared to. There's dinner, brunch, and an eight-course tasting menu that ends with gooey Basque cheesecake, so you can escalate at your own pace.

  80. Rank 3593. Shotgun Willie's BBQ

    Texas Barbecue

Prime brisket with a peppery bark is the reason this Texas-style barbecue joint started as a food truck and has since moved twice to keep up with demand. The room runs to booths and picnic tables, road signs and Willie Nelson energy. Jalapeño sausage oozes cheese, the pulled pork is smoky, and the green bean side cooked with brisket has its own cult following. A Michelin Selected Restaurant, and the kind of place where strangers talk across tables.

  82. This is a casino-resort buffet dressed for a wedding, with tiered cakes, whole wheels of cheese, and caviar on blinis next to the miniature pancakes. Sixteen cooking stations mean the crepes and eggs Benedict arrive made to order, and reserving the late-morning slot lets brunch slide into the crab-leg dinner shift. Expect a line, a three-figure bill with the extras, and a plate strategy.

  83. The Lao "crack sauce" on the oysters tells you everything about the approach: Southeast Asian flavor logic applied to a seafood-forward menu, from crudos with coconut and chili jam ponzu to whole fish. James Beard Award winner Phila Lorn, who also runs the notoriously hard-to-book Mawn, opened this one in 2025, and it skews a bit pricier and more oceanic than its sibling, with wok-seared noodles keeping things from getting too precious.

  84. Rank 3599. Cordon Bleu

    Vietnamese

The charbroiler at this pocket-size Vietnamese diner on California Street has been smoking up five-spice chicken and pork since the neighborhood was a different place. A dozen seats total, three to a table and nine at the counter, where you can watch the kitchen move with practiced, unhurried efficiency. Combo plates are the whole point, and the imperial rolls are fearsomely crunchy in a way that feels non-negotiable.

  85. This is a velvet-draped, 1920s-style cocktail parlor, reached by slipping behind the doughnut stand inside Aria's food hall, which is about as speakeasy as a doughnut counter can make you feel. Live jazz fills the room most nights, and the drinks arrive with props: mushroom-shaped glasses on a mossy board, a Manhattan in a cigar box. Dress for a date, and bring someone who won't mind sharing the dry ice.

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
