The Best Places to Eat and Drink in Manhattan

Eat + Drink, change section
  1. Rank 288. NARO

    Korean

The name comes from South Korea's first carrier rocket, which tells you something about the ambitions in the room. Naro is a fine dining Korean restaurant in Rockefeller Center from the team behind Atomix, and where that room chases reinvention, this one returns to classics. The New York Times gave it three stars. Order the Dongji Martini, which made Esquire's list of the best martinis in the country, and let the evening unfold slowly.

  2. The picture window looks out on a community garden at 9th and Avenue C, and that's about as decorative as this coffee shop gets. Ninth Street Espresso has been a purist espresso spot in Alphabet City since what feels like the dawn of specialty coffee, roasting its own beans out in Long Island City and keeping the menu ruthlessly short. A cookie, a vegan mini-loaf, a bench out front if the weather allows.

  4. The carriage house bones are the whole point: a fireplace center stage in winter, and windows that swing open onto a cobblestoned side street in summer, letting Barrow Street essentially become part of the room. This is a fine dining institution that New Yorkers bring people to when they want the city to do the heavy lifting, which it does without much trouble. The kind of place that makes a Tuesday feel like an occasion.

  7. Rank 288. Suited

    Thoughtful Coffee

Concrete floors, black accent walls, and two arc-shaped bars make this FiDi coffee shop feel like it wandered in from Brooklyn and decided to stay. A multi-roaster menu pulls from a rotating cast of serious names, and the espresso machine moonlights for by-the-cup drip. There's a small food menu, housemade pastries, and, naturally, wine. Laptop seating is deliberately scarce, which says everything about what the room is for.

  8. The awards

  9. Rank 288. Zimmi's

    French

The madeleines come out warm, baked to order, gilded nearly brown at the edges, and the Times critic named them among her favorite dishes of the year without mentioning Proust once, which takes restraint. Zimmi's is a rustic Southern French bistro on Bedford Street, the kind of place that makes butter-and-lemon sponge cake feel like an event without making a production of it. West Village regulars fill the room early.

  14. The sea-blue tiled wall and intricate woodwork make this Upper West Side Indian restaurant feel like a deliberate escape from 72nd Street. The menu runs from snacks through sharing plates to mains, and the name doubles as a standing order: get a kebab. Finely minced baby goat formed around a skewer arrives with the thread unspooled tableside, which is either theatrical or deeply practical, possibly both.

  18. Rank 310. Temple Bar

    Italian Cocktail Bar

Oak paneling, cherrywood bar, velvet seating, heavy curtains: Temple Bar is a cocktail bar that looks like the lounge of a grand hotel, minus the fusty clientele. The crowd skews professional and thirty-something, the lighting is low, and the drinks lean classic with an Italian tilt. A Sgroppino sits alongside a Ward Eight and an Espresso Martini, which is a menu that knows its history without being smug about it.

  19. The honey cardamom toast alone sends a signal about where the Noortwyck's head is at. This West Village neighborhood restaurant comes from Eleven Madison Park alums, and the menu moves between oysters and cinnamon rolls without blinking. The New York Times gave it two stars. Service has that unhurried quality that makes you feel less like a table and more like a regular, even on your first visit.

  20. Rank 310. The Raines Law Room

    Intimate Speakeasy

You ring an unmarked bell on an unmarked door below street level, and that's the whole game announced before you've ordered a drink. Inside, this cocktail bar in Chelsea is all deep armchairs, shaded lamps, a fireplace, and curtained alcoves fitted with a buzzer to summon your server when you're ready. It's a speakeasy setup done without irony, and the room is quiet enough that people actually talk to each other.

  21. The modest exterior on a quiet West Village street gives almost nothing away, which is apparently the point. Inside, 4 Charles Prime Rib is an intimate, old-school steakhouse with deep leather booths and staff who seem to know your name by the second drink. The prime rib comes three ways, the creamed spinach is non-negotiable, and the Valrhona chocolate pie in an Oreo crust lands like a closing argument.

  24. The second-floor dining room on Avenue A reads like a very chic treehouse, all intimacy and low light. This vegan restaurant in the East Village brings a real polish to plant-based cooking, with dishes assembled like small arguments for taking the cuisine seriously. The menu occasionally wanders into paella and mole territory, which is a choice. It's a Michelin Selected spot, and the kind of room where nobody misses the meat.

  25. Rank 321. Gui

    Korean Steakhouse

The aged steaks arrive finished with nothing but Maldon salt, which tells you something about the confidence level here. Gui is a Korean steakhouse in Times Square that leans into Japanese wagyu and USDA Prime cuts alongside raw bar and Asian-inflected sides like wagyu fried rice. The sleek room draws theater crowds but doesn't need them; the menu earns a visit on its own terms.

  26. Rank 321. J.G. Melon

    American

The green-and-white checked tablecloths have been here so long they're practically load-bearing. JG Melon is an old-school Upper East Side burger joint where the dark wood bar stays busy, the staff is genuinely cheerful, and the cheeseburger is the reason The Infatuation named it one of New York's defining dishes. Come early or expect a wait, which at this point is just part of the ritual.

  29. Temaki, or hand rolls, are the whole point here, served open-style and passed directly from the crew to the counter while the nori is still crisp. The room is all blonde wood and gray-blue cushions, casual and unhurried in a way that West Village sushi rarely bothers to be. The plant-based options get the same care as the fish. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, for whatever that tells you about the price-to-pleasure math.

  30. The soup dumplings in the crab version are reason enough to find a table at this polished SoHo Chinese restaurant, where the room runs lanterns and a front bar and the kitchen turns out food that feels more Flushing than fashionable. The scallion pancake martini is exactly the kind of thing you order to prove you've read the menu. The Michelin Guide has given it a Bib Gourmand, and the wine list is notably more considered than you'd expect.

  33. Rank 321. Tolo

    Chinese

A serious wine list paired with Chinese cooking in Chinatown, right across from Seward Park. Tolo is a compact wine bar where the chef brings real polish to familiar dishes, the kind of place where the small tables fill up fast and nobody seems to mind. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand. Zalto glasses and a long, considered pour list signal that the wine half of the equation is no afterthought.

  36. Rank 337. 8282

    Modern Korean

Burrata with rice cakes and gochujang-marinated chicken is either a terrible idea or a very good one, and this Lower East Side gastropub has decided it's the latter. The menu is rooted in Korean flavors and then takes a hard left into stranger, more interesting territory, with everything designed to be shared. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a place this loose-limbed and fun.

  38. Family recipes are the spine of the menu here, though Chef Max Wittawat dresses them up considerably. Bangkok Supper Club is a chic contemporary Thai restaurant in the West Village where the cocktail program pulls as much attention as the food, and the room has the candles-and-low-lighting energy to match. The Michelin Guide has it selected. Dishes read simple on paper and then arrive full of dramatic contrasts, which is the whole point.

  39. Rank 337. C as in Charlie

    Southern Fusion Korean

A ten-dish menu split between Southern comfort and Korean flavors sounds like a dare, but the chef at this snug Bleecker Street tapas spot pulls it off without breaking a sweat. Galbi jus over gruyere grits, harissa-glazed ribs, banana pudding with misugaru, it's a small room and the tables are close enough that your neighbors will probably want to order the same things. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks.

  40. Korean fried chicken shop on a busy Upper West Side corner, narrow and deep with an open kitchen you can watch from pretty much every table. The chicken comes out amber and lacquered in sticky black pepper soy, the kind that makes you rethink every other version you've had. The fried rice, loaded with Chinese sausage, kimchi, and a runny egg on top, is its own argument for staying for seconds.

  42. Rank 337. Dagon

    Middle Eastern

A corner restaurant on Broadway where the teal-washed dining room and floor-to-ceiling windows make the whole place feel like an exhale. The long counter fills up with regulars who clearly know their way around a Middle Eastern menu, and the off-center bar is quietly good for eating solo. Fresh-baked breads anchor the meal, and the kitchen's way with date syrup and tahini shows a chef who understands how sweetness and richness need each other.

  43. Rank 337. Dim Sum Go Go

    Cantonese

Dim sum made to order rather than wheeled around on carts sets this Chinatown shop apart from its neighbors. The photo menu keeps things moving, which helps on weekends when the room is full and tables are shared with strangers as a matter of course. Rice rolls, pan-fried pork dumplings, and soup dumplings all come out fresh. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the portions are generous enough that the slightly higher prices barely register.

  45. Rank 337. HanGawi

    vegetarian Korean

You leave your shoes at the door, sink onto a cushion at a low table, and settle into what feels less like dinner and more like a scheduled exhale. HanGawi is an upscale, vegetarian-only Korean restaurant where the meditative music and temple artifacts are not ironic. The menu is entirely plant-based, the tea list gets as much attention as the wine list, and the Michelin Guide has given it a Bib Gourmand.

    The awards

  46. Rank 337. HWARO

    Korean

A 22-seat counter tucked inside Gui Steakhouse, up an elevator and easy to walk past without knowing. Sungchul Shim runs a multicourse tasting menu where Korean flavors meet French technique, and the two Michelin stars suggest the kitchen takes that fusion seriously. Chefs work at the center of the room in full view, which keeps everyone facing the same direction for once. The white soy custard with Osetra caviar has developed a following of its own.

  47. Rank 337. Ishq

    Modern Indian

A salmon-pink quartz bar runs the full length of the front room before giving way to a moodier dining space where everything arrives family-style, whether you planned it that way or not. This modern Indian restaurant on Avenue A earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand by actually delivering on the spice, depth, and nuance that the genre usually only promises. The lamb shank biryani is portioned for a small crowd, which is the correct way to order it.

  48. Rank 337. ITO

    Sushi

The 16-seat counter in Tribeca runs loud for an omakase room, which is part of the point. The team behind ITO has no patience for hushed reverence: fish flown in from Tokyo and Fukuoka anchors a nigiri progression with deep cuts and assertive saucing, and the appetizers and desserts pull their weight too. Whiskey and sake flow, the room skews young, and everyone booked their next reservation before the first one ended.

  49. Rank 337. Jiang Nan

    Chinese

Roast Peking duck arrives on a silver tray with thin pancakes, which sets the tone for what Jiang Nan is doing: upscale Chinese dining that roams the whole country rather than planting a flag in one region. The room leans Imperial, all lacquer and stone and greenery, and it reads as date-night or business lunch depending on who you came with. The Michelin Guide has given it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a place this polished on Bowery.

  50. The omakase counter tucked inside Kanoyama runs on select days only, so planning ahead is part of the deal. It's the serious, pricey sushi experience the East Village rarely advertises: a small counter, a chef calling the shots, and fish flown in with obvious intention. The sake list is deep enough that regulars argue about it, and you're handed an assortment of cups to choose from, which is a nicer problem than most restaurants give you.

  51. The hand-pulled noodles here get stir-fried to order, and the soup dumplings draw a crowd that fills every table and then stands outside doing the math on the wait. This is a loud, steamy Chinese noodle house in Midtown that holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, so the lines are not going anywhere. The dumpling menu alone could occupy a dedicated researcher. Cash in your patience and go.

    The awards

  52. Rank 337. La Dong

    Vietnamese

Lotus-shaped lamps and Colonial-era wooden arches set the mood just off Union Square, where this Vietnamese restaurant earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand with cooking that goes well past the expected banh mi. Come with a group and order deep: the turmeric crepe with shrimp and fresh herbs is a sharp move, and the pho, poured tableside, arrives fragrant enough to rearrange your whole afternoon.

    The awards

  53. Rank 337. Laliko

    Georgian Eastern European

A West Village Georgian restaurant where the wine list runs entirely from the Caucasus and the servers teach you how to eat khinkali before you embarrass yourself. Those large, broth-filled dumplings are the move, though the khachapuri, in either its cheese-molten or mint-bright form, will slow you down first. A long communal table anchors a room hung with murals. Michelin Bib Gourmand.

    The awards

  54. Rank 337. Little Alley

    Shanghainese

A Shanghai restaurant in Murray Hill where the vegetable dishes alone could anchor a meal, which tells you something about the kitchen's priorities. The crispy eel arrives sweet and glossy and somehow disappears before you've decided you like it. Pork and crab soup dumplings lean restrained rather than explosive, and the mapo tofu is silken and properly fiery. Dark walls, warm light, a small bar up front. The Michelin Bib Gourmand is on record here.

  55. A crunchy Burmese pancake stuffed with vegetables and sesame seeds is the right way to start at this tiny East Village restaurant, where a family team runs the room with the kind of warmth that makes a ten-table spot feel like the whole point of the neighborhood. The menu runs longer than you'd expect from a place this small, covering soups, salads, curries, and noodles. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and easy to see why portions are built for sharing.

    The awards

  56. The dry pot at this East Village Sichuan spot lets you build your own bowl from scratch, choosing proteins, vegetables, and heat level from a list long enough to be mildly paralyzing. Low ceilings, exposed brick, and a communal table set the scene. The Michelin Bib Gourmand regulars often skip the decision fatigue and go straight for dan dan noodles or cold braised beef and tripe. Nothing here will make you cry; Sichuan-curious beginners are safe.

    The awards

  57. David Chang's noodle shop has been around forever, and the steamed buns alone have kept it packed. The room runs on wood counters and an open kitchen, and service moves at a clip, which suits the vibe. The menu leans into Asian street food with enough creativity to keep regulars guessing. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of spot where you'll spend less than you expect and think about it for days after.

  58. Rank 337. Noreetuh

    Hawaiian

Polaroids of regulars tile every wall of this dimly lit East Village neighborhood restaurant, which has been doing Hawaiian comfort food long enough to feel like part of the block's furniture. The mochiko fried chicken comes with macaroni salad and King's Hawaiian rolls, the musubi platter runs from spicy spam to salmon tartare, and the German riesling list goes deeper than anyone sees coming. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and a genuinely easy room to spend a whole evening in.

  59. Arancini at this Sicilian restaurant on Third Avenue arrive in a pool of light tomato sauce, golden and crisp in a way that makes "rice ball" feel like an insult. The menu runs through the kind of food that probably came off identical crackle-glazed platters in Sicily, and the rustic room is hung with a few of them. A Michelin Bib Gourmand pick. Before you leave, the specialty ingredients near the door have a way of following you home.

  60. Rank 337. Nubeluz

    Cocktail Bar

Fifty floors up in the Ritz-Carlton NoMad, this cocktail bar from the José Andrés group takes its name from the Spanish words for cloud and light, which is either poetic or on the nose depending on how far into the menu you are. The views run 270 degrees over the city, and the drinks lean into reimagined classics, from an adonis to a tom collins. Dress accordingly; the room expects it.

  61. Rank 337. Nyonya

    Malaysian

Nasi lemak, the Malaysian classic of coconut rice with pickled veg, crispy anchovies, and curried chicken, is what the regulars reorder without looking up. Nyonya is a no-frills Malaysian restaurant in Chinatown, brick walls and wooden tables, where the menu runs long and the servers are opinionated enough to steer you past the obvious choices. The Michelin Guide gives it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a room this unpretentious feeding people this well.

  62. The southern edge of Bryant Park has quietly become Sichuan row, and Peppercorn Station is the bright, cheerful one with a menu built for ordering too much and splitting the bill. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and earns it with a kitchen that keeps the heat calibrated, nudging the sinuses rather than punishing them. A casual Chinese restaurant where the numbing, golden broths and fermented black bean mapo tofu do the talking.

  63. A two-story Thai restaurant near Union Square that comes with a long bar, a full house most nights, and the kind of noise level that makes the food taste better. The menu covers a broad stretch of Thai cooking, classical and contemporary, with enough chili heat to remind you where you are. A Michelin Bib Gourmand pick that draws a crowd happy to wait for it.

    Wine Bar

A natural wine bar on East Seventh Street where the list leans hard into Eastern Europe and the sommeliers can talk about it all night. The food menu is short and rotates, which keeps the regulars genuinely curious. Michelin gave it a Bib Gourmand, and the room, split between a communal high-top and a quieter dining area, fills up fast enough that a reservation is less optional than it sounds.

  65. Rank 337. Sami & Susu

    Mediterranean Wine Bar

The kitchen here runs without a proper gas stove, which makes the lamb ragu over house-made spätzle even more worth puzzling over. Sami & Susu is a narrow Mediterranean wine bar on Orchard Street, with a short seasonal menu that wanders the Middle East, a natural wine list, and a punky soundtrack. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and the staff seem genuinely unbothered by how much you order.

  66. A pizza shop inside a Times Square subway station, which sounds like a dare and turns out to be a genuinely good idea. Black-and-white checkered floors and 80s classics on the speakers give it a casual, slightly punk energy, and the thin-crust pies hold their own against the commuter chaos outside. Small plates cycle with the seasons before the pizza arrives. The Michelin Guide has taken note.

  67. Rank 337. Sobaya

    Japanese Noodle Shop

Buckwheat soba, hot or cold depending on what the weather is doing to you, has kept this East Village noodle shop humming for longer than most of its neighbors have existed. The room runs to booths, counter seats, and a calm, traditional feel that makes it easy to linger. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and one of the rare spots in the city where a walk-in during peak dinner hours won't leave you standing on the sidewalk.

  68. Red lamps strung across the dining room push back hard against any suggestion this is just another Upper East Side Thai spot. It's a contemporary Thai restaurant pulling dishes from across the country, so the menu runs from Northern sai-ua spring rolls and khao soi to Southern Phuket-style curries, which is a longer journey than most places attempt. The cocktails are named after Thai temple festival games, a detail that earns its place. A Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  69. Rank 337. Tonchin

    Authentic Ramen Shop

The tonkotsu broth here is pork-forward but never heavy, which sounds like a small thing until you've slogged through a bowl that coats your throat like spackling compound. This Tokyo-based ramen shop in Midtown pulls its noodles in-house, and they hold their spring all the way to the bottom of the bowl. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand. The room is sleek enough for a working lunch and relaxed enough for a slow dinner.

  70. Flour tortillas made in-house daily are the quiet backbone of this Tex-Mex taco spot in the East Village, where weathered wood and stained-glass chandeliers give the room a vintage roadhouse feel that has no business being this charming on Third Avenue. The menu leans into tacos and quesadillas, the cocktails are serious, and the Texas sheet cake with candied pecans is the kind of dessert that ends arguments. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  72. This is a fried-chicken counter on West 72nd with no seating, so the plan is to order, take a bag, and eat on a bench like a person with nothing to prove. The chicken goes into bubbling skillets to order, which is why the wait exists and why nobody is allowed to rush it. Ribs, turkey wings, and smothered chicken are on offer too, along with lima beans that are a quiet scene-stealer. The chef was a James Beard Best Chef: New York State semifinalist in 2024.

    Italian

Green lacquered chairs and upholstered nooks fill this Italian restaurant tucked into Rockefeller Center, brought uptown by the team behind SoHo's King. The open kitchen and bar counter keep it lively without tipping into noisy. The menu is short and focused, leaning into good pasta and a cocktail list that includes a negroni sbagliato bianco, which sounds made up but isn't.

  78. Rank 379. Sadelle's

    Bakery

Bagels arrive stacked on wooden dowels here, which tells you most of what you need to know about the vibe. This is Major Food Group's theatrical, not-quite-kosher take on a Jewish appetizing shop in Soho, where seed-crusted bagels anchor spreads of lox, sable, and sturgeon, and there's a full caviar section for when a schmear feels insufficiently dramatic. Budget accordingly; this crowd did not come to save money.

  79. Rank 379. Salt & Straw

    Maximalist Ice Cream Shop

  80. A few steps from Madison Square Park, this pizza shop has made a name for itself with a well-fermented dough that stays light enough to eat without regret. The round NY-style pies lean into garlic, while the square pepperoni comes out properly leavened and crisp underneath. The XXL mozzarella stick, served with marinara, is the kind of starter that settles the question of whether to order it immediately. 50 Top Pizza USA ranked it thirteenth in the country.

  81. Suma katsuo, a buttery fish rarely seen outside Japan, gets cold-smoked over cherry wood and finished with onion sauce, sesame, and nori at this intimate omakase counter on Prince Street. The New York Times named that sashimi course one of the top dishes of 2024. Chef Ben Chen's approach is precise without being fussy, and the room rewards the kind of guest who came to pay attention rather than to be seen.

  82. Rank 394. I Sodi

    Italian

A reservation here is the kind of thing West Village regulars treat as a competitive sport, so walk-ins at odd hours are the move. Rita Sodi's cozy Italian neighborhood restaurant on Bleecker changes its daily specials with the seasons while holding certain signatures hostage in the best way. The bar handles a Negroni with conviction, and the room hums all night with the particular energy of a place where nobody looks like they're having a bad time.

  83. Rank 394. Ribalta

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

A few steps from Union Square, Ribalta is a Neapolitan pizza spot that takes its dough seriously, the kind of light, well-leavened crust that makes the New York slice feel like a different food entirely. The room is spacious and lively without being loud, and the menu runs well beyond pizza into appetizers and mains. It landed at number eight on 50 Top Pizza USA, which the regulars packing the tables on a Tuesday probably already knew.

  84. Rank 398. ATLA

    Mexican

The house-made tortillas holding together the tacos here tell you what kind of place this is: a casual, all-day Mexican eatery in NoHo where the cooking is straightforward and the room stays bright and airy from morning through dinner. Larger plates are built for sharing, and the churros at the end feel less optional than the menu lets on. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which tracks with the crowd that fills it without making a fuss about it.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
