  1. Rank 2073. Flocon

    Nordic

Burnt leeks with lardo and vermouth dressing is the kind of dish that sounds like it shouldn't work until it does. This farm-to-table bistro on the Mouffetard sits in a Scandinavian-leaning room with a warm, buzzy feel that the street itself seems to encourage. The menu leans seasonal and quietly plant-forward, though evenings make room for a sharing tomahawk. Wines are sensibly priced, which on this street passes for a small miracle.

  4. A short, modern set-menu restaurant in a medieval volcanic-stone town that takes its local lentilles blondes very seriously, preparing them a different way each service. The chef leans on Auvergne ingredients with occasional detours, and everything on the concise menu is cooked from scratch. Three options per course keeps decisions mercifully brief, which suits the unhurried mood of Saint-Flour just fine.

  7. Rank 2073. Frenchie Biarritz

    Basque French

The dining room of the Hôtel Regina Experimental sits above the bay, and Grégory Marchand of Frenchie has set up here with a menu that leans into Basque country while keeping one foot in the brasserie register he knows well. The terrace sea views are the obvious draw, but the 1920s-inspired interior holds its own. Expect a substantial wine list with plenty available by the glass, and cooking that moves between regional and quietly inventive without making a fuss about it.

  10. Rank 2073. Fuumi

    Teppanyaki Japanese

Counter seats at the teppanyaki grill put you close enough to feel the heat, which is either the appeal or the reason to book the dining room instead. This Japanese spot in central Fontainebleau runs from gyoza and ramen to okonomiyaki, the house specialty cooked in front of you. Lunch brings a bento-style set with soup, small sides, and a main. The room fills fast and stays full, so a reservation is less optional than it sounds.

  11. A medieval manor house that was once a coaching inn now holds a fine dining room where bare stone walls and old parquet floors sit alongside clean, modern lines. The chef named the place after the goddess of the earth, and the menu follows: fish pulled from the town's market paired with vegetables and herbs from a nearby farm. It's the kind of origin story that could tip into preciousness, but the flavors stay sharp enough to keep things honest.

  12. A port view sets the scene for this all-day restaurant run by a couple who cooked their way through Alain Passard's kitchen, Corsica, and Dan Barber's Blue Hill before landing here. They call it a "culinary house," and it earns the name, running from breakfast through dinner in a room full of cosy corners. Every dish on the menu leads with a vegetable or fruit, and the cooking takes that ecological seriousness without making you feel like you're being lectured.

  13. Picture windows looking straight onto the vineyards set the mood at this modern creative restaurant tucked into a light-filled farmhouse on a winegrowing estate at the foot of the Brézème hills. The chef works with local and organic ingredients and brings a personal sensibility to the cooking, the kind of place where the house-made bread alone signals that someone cares. Worth the drive out of Livron.

  17. Pierre Gagnaire's seafood-forward fine dining restaurant sits above the Atlantic with a view that makes it hard to concentrate on the menu, which would be a shame. The kitchen pulls heavily from the local coast, pairing shellfish and seaweed with precise sauces and jus in the kind of elegant, elaborately composed dishes Gagnaire is known for. The wine list runs deep, and the pours come from magnum bottles, because of course they do.

    Modern Breton

Coffered ceiling, velvet seats, and painted mouldings set a quietly formal tone in this modern French restaurant near Les Invalides. The chef draws on Breton and Grenoble roots, so squab and lobster share a plate, and Chartreuse turns up somewhere in most menus. Cooking is precise without being cold. 20. Rank 2073. Genty Magre

    Traditional French

The menu announces its intentions plainly: "traditional French bourgeois cuisine." This family-run bistro in Toulouse has been doing exactly that for ages, and the cassoulet, a proper, slow-cooked assembly of lingot beans, Toulouse sausage, duck confit, and pork in several forms, reportedly took a city title in 2023. The wine list leans southwest, the service is warm, and you can buy a jar of the cassoulet on your way out, which feels like cheating and also very sensible.

  22. Rank 2073. Germaine

    Creative Japanese

Fifteen seats, one counter, one set menu, one chef doing everything alone: Germaine is a small and quietly intense restaurant in Bayonne named for the chef's grandmother, who presumably cooked nothing like this. The kitchen leans on fermentation, robatayaki, and coastal ingredients, pulling them into something cohesive and precise. The named grandmother connection is sweet until you taste how far the cooking has traveled from her table.

  23. Rank 2073. Getaria

    Basque

A patio shaded by plane trees hides behind one of the prettier villages on the Basque Coast, which is already saying something. This inn serves modern Basque cooking that leans hard on the local fish auction and whatever the kitchen feels like doing with the season's pâté en croûte, a specialty the chef competed in seriously enough to place second nationally. Fresh fish, Basque produce, and a lunch menu priced as if someone forgot to be greedy about it.

This classic French restaurant inside a former coaching inn near the Benedictine abbey at Solesmes has been feeding monks and their visitors for a very long time. The kitchen does not reinvent anything, which is the point: hollandaise, slow-cooked eggs, lamb, and soufflé, all made with ingredients the team clearly takes personally. Service is old-school charming in the best sense.

The cooking is precise and a little unexpected, the kind of food that makes you put down your phone. Service keeps up without making you feel managed.

  36. Rank 2073. Gwaien

    Modern Seafood

The name is Breton for Audierne, the chef's hometown on the far tip of Finistère, and the whole menu argues the point. This is a contemporary seafood restaurant in central Nantes, with exposed stone walls and a kitchen that pulls exclusively from sustainable local fisheries. Surf-and-turf pairings run throughout, fragrant and carefully plated. Lunch keeps it simple; evenings go further.

    Modern French

Near the Eckmühl Lighthouse on the tip of Brittany, this modern restaurant is run by a couple who grew up here and make no effort to hide it, which is a compliment. The chef builds refined, sauce-forward plates around whatever the local boats brought in, scallops from Finistère and shellfish sitting alongside earthy emulsions. The room is cool whites, greys, and gold. Evenings get more ambitious; lunch is the gentler entry point.

A vaulted 16th-century stone room at the foot of Cathédrale St Front, named for a fictional Belgian detective with impeccable taste in order and method. This is a proper sit-down restaurant, the kind where the chef takes Dordogne terroir seriously, reworking regional classics, foie gras, magret, tarte Tatin, with a light contemporary hand. 43. Rank 2073. Hestia

    Barbecue

Stone walls and white beams on one of Paris's most chaotic tourist streets, which makes the calm inside feel earned. Hestia is a barbecue restaurant where the seasonal menu revolves around the grill, and meat gets carved tableside once it's done. The chef cooks without ceremony, letting the fire do the talking. The floor runs with quiet competence to match. Book ahead; the room is small and the word is out.

  44. The menu at this Avignon restaurant takes its cue from a portmanteau the chef invented, "Pérouvence," blending Provençal roots with Peruvian spices from his wife's homeland. Acidity, smoke, and aji peppers turn up alongside local squab and celeriac in a dining room with a plush Belle Epoque interior that has no idea how adventurous the food has become. The wine list pulls from both countries, which feels only fair.

A Basque inn perched at the Lizarrieta Pass on the French-Spanish border, at the end of a road that suggests you've taken a wrong turn. The building supposedly moonlighted as a smugglers' den at some point, which does give the lamb something to live up to. The chef forages the herbs and mushrooms himself, and the cooking leans creative without losing its footing in the landscape. The terrace view across the hills is, frankly, the accomplice.

    The awards

  49. Rank 2073. Hortùs

    Modern Mediterranean

The name means 'garden' in Latin, and the kitchen takes that seriously: plants lead, animal protein plays a supporting role, and the organic sourcing is non-negotiable. It's a small modern restaurant on a quiet Toulouse street where the chef channels the Mediterranean in a way that feels less like a concept and more like actual cooking, the kind where a squid dish somehow reads as a carbonara and makes sense.

  50. A modern restaurant near the market with a name that nods to its chef's British origin story. The format splits between a casual market-driven lunch and a more involved tasting menu in the evening, so the same room can feel quite different depending on when you show up. The cooking is precise without being stiff, built around clear, confident flavours rather than elaborate flourishes. A warm, no-fuss room to match.

This hotel restaurant on Belle-Île-en-Mer leans hard into the island's larder, with lamb from Bangor, fish from a local fisherman, and spider crab appearing in more forms than you'd expect. The room was redesigned by a noted architect and plays Breton black-and-white against jolts of bright colour, so it doesn't feel like the average seaside dining room.

  59. Rank 2073. Hugo & Co

    Modern French

Open kitchens, mason jars, and pop art on the walls set the mood at this contemporary bistro on rue Monge, just across from the old Roman amphitheatre. Seasonal French

A spruce-green village house in a hamlet near Fouday, with a large kitchen garden stretching out back that more or less writes the menu. This creative restaurant runs on what the couple grows, ferments, dehydrates, and salts through the seasons, which in the Vosges is no small ask. The chef cooks with quiet conviction, and the host explains the food without turning it into a lecture, which is rarer than it sounds.

A garden terrace restaurant on Pampelonne beach where wood, greenery, and Vallauris tableware set a tone that sits somewhere between Provence and a very tasteful fantasy. Jean-François Piège devised the Mediterranean and Italian-leaning menu, so the food keeps pace with the address. Valet parking on arrival, a large attentive staff, and DJ nights confirm this is Saint-Tropez doing what Saint-Tropez does, earnestly and at volume.

Exposed stone walls and visible cables run the length of this narrow Paris dining room, where a Korean chef cooks solo behind an open pass, turning out a mystery-menu of modern French food with quiet Asian detours. There's no choosing: the chef decides, and the result tends toward the surprising. A creative restaurant for people comfortable handing over control, which, in the 10th, is most of them.

    Mediterranean

Straw lampshades, bamboo chairs, and seagrass underfoot set a beach-hut tone that somehow works on a Paris boulevard. This Mediterranean restaurant leans hard into Marseille, with fragrant, sun-drenched cooking, panisses, stuffed vegetables, and braised artichokes, loosening up at lunch on the terrace and pulling itself together at dinner for a set menu. The 20th arrondissement is happy to have it.

The red façade and big white lettering are hard to miss in the Saint-Charles neighbourhood, and the room inside delivers on the promise: ochre walls, red velvet banquettes, soft lighting. Kaldera is a modern restaurant where the cooking leans creative without being showy, and the classic desserts are taken seriously. The two partners run the floor with the kind of attentive ease that makes a neighbourhood spot feel like it knows you.

A midnight-blue façade on a quiet residential street in the 16th hides this intimate modern Japanese restaurant, where the tableware, heavy meat knives and all, gets as much attention as the plate. The chef weaves Japanese ingredients into a broadly French framework: miso saikyo with foie gras, yuzu in a white wine sauce. One set menu in the evening keeps things focused, with a little more flexibility at lunch.

  96. A set menu restaurant in central Marseille where the chef, raised in Kinshasa, runs a frequently changing multi-course menu that weaves Mediterranean produce through Congolese instincts and French technique. The combinations are genuinely cross-cultural rather than decorative: plantain gnocchi next to Sisteron lamb, manioc crisps standing in for bread. At lunch, a simpler street-food format takes over downstairs. Come for dinner when you want the full ride.

A teppanyaki counter in Issy where the flames are part of the show, so sitting back from the grill would be a genuine waste. The chef works through premium fish and meat with the kind of quiet precision that doesn't need a dramatic finish to make its point. The room leans into traditional Japanese wood tones, keeping things calm while the cooking does the opposite.

    Nordic

A spare, Scandinavian-feeling dining room near La Petite France sets the tone for what arrives on the plate: modern cuisine that leans on fermentation, smoke, and vegetable-driven sauces to coax ingredients into something quietly surprising. The chef blends Nordic and Japanese instincts with Alsatian produce in a way that feels considered rather than clever. Intimate enough that the kitchen's focus is almost palpable from any seat.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
