  2. A conservatory opens onto a patio beside the storied La Pyramide, and the whole setup has a leafy, casual ease that the flagship next door does not. This is the Henriroux family's more relaxed restaurant, a place where a compact menu of modern French cooking moves quickly and the room stays lively. The kitchen takes good ingredients seriously without making you feel like you're in a seminar about them. A vegetarian menu runs alongside the main one.

  3. Rank 2073. L'Espérance

    Modern Basque

A short walk from Bandol's harbour, this modern French restaurant runs on the kind of fastidious sourcing that makes a simple grilled oyster feel deliberate. The chef grew up Basque but cooks with a deep attachment to the south, so Provençal apricots and pata negra share a menu without any fuss about it. The room is charming without trying too hard, which in this corner of Provence is its own small achievement.

  13. Rank 2073. L'Estevão

    Modern Mediterranean

A quai-side restaurant near Pernes-les-Fontaines' covered market, where the chef trained under some serious Provençal talent before opening her own quietly confident room. She runs a market-driven lunch menu and a single multi-course menu in the evening, both shaped by Mediterranean instincts and a well-traveled palate. The cooking leans on spice with a light hand, and her riff on pissaladière, anchovy cream and all, is the kind of dish that earns a place in the conversation.

  19. A renovated Grand Siècle coaching inn in Digoin gives this modern French restaurant its bones, with a dining room that keeps the old-world charm and quietly updates it. The chef trained at some serious Burgundy addresses before coming home to cook with what's local and seasonal. Dinner here reads like a region on a plate, Bresse chicken, morels, wild garlic, smoked char, the kind of cooking that doesn't need to announce itself.

  21. Across from the Boulingrin covered market in a quietly handsome Art Deco building, L'ExtrA is a modern restaurant with an unusual backstory: most of the team, from kitchen to floor, is neurodivergent, part of a social inclusion project run by an experienced pair. The room is spare and contemporary, the cooking precise, and the service lands as genuinely warm rather than performed. A proper sit-down lunch or dinner, not a quick bite.

    The awards

  22. A restored manor house on a bend of the River Lot, with room for just a dozen diners inside. The chef, a veteran of Le 1862, runs this intimate modern restaurant with his partner, turning out artistically plated seasonal dishes that lean hard on local produce. Each course tends to arrive with its own satellite of small accompaniments, which is either charming or a lot of plates, depending on your mood.

  30. Rank 2073. L'Huitrier Pie

    Modern French

A courtyard table in Saint-Émilion with a glass of something local nearby is a solid starting point, and this small modern restaurant gives you good reason to sit still. The young team sources with real intention, pulling heirloom tomatoes from a neighboring plot and black pork from the Dordogne, and the cooking is careful without being stiff. Unpretentious and personal, the kind of place the village quietly needed.

  34. Rank 2073. L'Imaginaire

    Modern French

Corten steel panels against a classic Alsatian façade signal that L'Imaginaire is doing something a bit different. Inside, the 1970s lean hard into thick carpet and swivel chairs, which is either kitsch or genius depending on your disposition. The chef trained at Lameloise and L'Arnsbourg, and the seasonal menus show it, running as surprise or à la carte. The front of house is sharp, and the wine list is the kind that quietly derails your budget.

  37. The tiled walls and old meat hooks are all that survived the remodel of this former butcher's shop, now a charming modern restaurant in the suburbs southeast of Paris. Two surprise tasting menus let the kitchen work with whatever looks good that day, sourced from Rungis or a nearby organic farm. A hidden table in the wine cellar seats a few guests, reservation required, which is exactly the kind of detail that fills a room with people who consider themselves in the know.

    The awards

  38. Tucked among holiday villas a short walk from the beach, this modern restaurant serves creative, locally rooted cooking that reads a little livelier than its sleepy surroundings might suggest. The chef works with market gardeners and local producers to build dishes that pair sardines with blueberries or squab with strawberries, the kind of combinations that sound like a dare until they arrive. The front-of-house team is genuinely warm, which helps.

    The awards

  39. Rank 2073. L'Inattendu

    Modern French

Old stonework walls and modern chairs set the tone at this quietly ambitious restaurant in a converted municipal building in rural Corrèze. The chef works closely with local producers, moving between classic French forms like pâté en croûte and something more personal, crispy boudin noir dumplings with apple compote among them. The dining room runs with understated warmth, the kind where you notice the service only because it never falters.

Stone walls, beamed ceilings, and hardwood floors set the scene at this classic French restaurant on a fountain square in the heart of Privas. The chef takes no liberties with the logic of French cooking, just quietly makes it more pleasurable, glazed sweetbreads arriving with fragrant jus and a lift of lemon zest. A summer terrace opens onto the square, and the two small dining rooms feel like they've always been there.

  43. Rank 2073. L'Initial

    French

Hardwood floors, exposed stone walls, and a beamed ceiling set the tone at this small French restaurant near the Seine in the 5th. The kitchen works squarely in the classical tradition, running glazed sweetbreads with fragrant jus alongside clean, unfussy desserts. In summer, tables spill onto the terrace, and the room fills with the kind of unhurried lunch that Paris does better than anywhere will admit.

    Creative Bistro

A bistronomy spot near the Église Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc that shifts gears between lunch and dinner, casual plates by day and a more ambitious set menu once the sun goes down. The chef leans hard on local sourcing and has a particular fondness for spices and herbs, which gives the food an edge you don't always expect this far from Paris. The room is quiet and cosy, the kind of place where the cooking does all the talking.

  50. A young couple with serious pedigree, trained across Paris's grandest addresses, now run a single set menu out of a restored château in the Tarn countryside. The cooking leans on the kitchen garden and local terroir, though it wanders happily when the mood strikes. Five guestrooms sit upstairs for anyone who'd rather not think about the drive home, which, honestly, seems like the correct call.

  52. A no-choice set menu that rotates every two weeks around a single seasonal vegetable or fruit, so one visit might be an evening entirely in the company of the turnip, from mousseline to dessert. This modern restaurant in a village auberge has a bistro side for those who want something less committed, but the main event is the chef's tasting menu, where premium proteins show up as supporting cast to whatever the garden is doing right now.

  53. A compact bistro near the Abbaye aux Hommes where the chef's Caribbean roots and years of travel show up sideways in the cooking, never announced but quietly present. The menu moves between tuna tataki with wasabi mayo and roasted Camembert, which sounds like a contradiction until the food arrives and it isn't. Normandy comfort and a wider curiosity, held together by a kitchen that seems to know exactly what it's doing.

  54. Floor-to-ceiling windows face the beach huts and open sea, so the sunset does half the decorating at this coastal modern restaurant in Mers-les-Bains. Interior designer Caroline Tissier handled the rest in shades of blue and green, which feels either on-the-nose or exactly right, depending on your tolerance for thematic commitment. The chef runs a set menu built around Picardy seafood, scallops from small boats and pot-caught langoustines, kept simple and letting the ingredients argue for themselves.

A big glass conservatory right on the port at Le Croisic sets the scene at this old-school seafood restaurant, where the menu has barely needed to change because the Atlantic keeps delivering. Abalone is right there in the name, and the fleet that caught yours is visible from the terrace. This is a seafood restaurant on the Cancale quay, the kind of place where the argument for freshness is moored fifty meters away. Inside it's polished without being stiff, and the menu runs from oysters and razor clams to scallops roasted on the shell. The Breton pancake with warm apples keeps things properly local on the way out.

The name is Occitan for hydrangea, which tells you something about how seriously this place takes its roots. It's a modern French restaurant tucked into a village that takes some finding, run by a sister-and-brother team whose chef ranges freely across French regions, pulling duck from Landes and fish from Corsica into a bright conservatory dining room that opens onto a panoramic terrace.

  64. Rank 2073. L'Osmose

    Modern French

Bare local stone walls and rough wood cladding set the tone at this snug village restaurant on the square in a postcard-pretty corner of Brittany. The chef runs a short, considered menu that moves between Breton ingredients and quieter exotic influences, the kind of cooking that feels more ambitious than the room suggests. The tasting menu is priced for people who actually live nearby, not for pilgrims passing through.

  65. Rank 2073. L'Oustalet Maïanen

    Provençal Mediterranean

Blown-glass panels of Léo Lelée's painted Arlésiennes are set into chandeliers made by a Murano glass artist, which gives this Provençal restaurant a quietly spectacular dining room even before the food arrives. The chef pulls produce from the Alpilles and Camargue, and the cooking lands somewhere between rustic and considered. Maillane was Frédéric Mistral's hometown, and the place leans into that cultural pride without making it a museum piece.

  94. The stone vaulted dining room with an imposing fireplace tells you where you are before the menu does: deep inside a medieval village in the Drôme Provençale. La Capitelle is a traditional French restaurant running a short à la carte and a seasonal daily menu, the kitchen reworking classic recipes with a lighter touch. In good weather the terrace opens up to valley views. A handful of guestrooms means you can stay, which is half the point of a place like this.

The fried carp fillets with horseradish cream have apparently become non-negotiable for regulars, which tells you something about the loyalty this place commands. It's a modern cuisine restaurant in a village outside Strasbourg, where the chef came up through some serious Alsatian kitchens before settling in here. Local foie gras, wild boar, and Alsace truffles sit alongside Cotentin lobster on a menu that travels without losing its footing.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
