The Best Places in the United States

  1. At 300 square feet, Matryoshka Coffee is less a place to linger and more a place to collect your espresso and marvel at the rainbow decor before heading back into the world. The micro cafe sits inside an apartment complex on the south side, and the menu leans into the same spirit as the walls: specialty drinks arrive with sprinkles and edible glitter, and the food options are instant ramen and cereal. Somehow this is not a bit; it's just the vibe.

  2. A coffee shop where you can also get clay under your fingernails, PIP Coffee + Clay pairs a small cafe with a ceramics studio on North 24th Street. Wheel-throwing classes run about two hours, keep group sizes small, and require you to put your phone away, which turns out to be the whole point. Your mug may come out lopsided. That's fine. Grab a coffee or a beer while the creative juices do their thing.

  3. Rank 5104. Feringhee

    Modern Indian

The name means "foreigner," which sets the tone for a modern Indian restaurant that treats the cuisine as a starting point rather than a finish line. Tucked into a Chandler strip mall, it runs cocktails spiked with masala chai vodka or ghee-washed whiskey alongside small plates, large plates, and pani puri worth sharing around the table. The room skews upscale without being stiff about it.

  4. Rank 5104. The Bindery

    Eclectic Café

A smoked rabbit and pecan pie with sharp cheddar and mustard gelato will tell you everything you need to know about this LoHi all-day cafe. The chef behind it has cooked her way through Italy, Israel, and Mexico, and the menu shows every mile, running from posole verde at lunch to butterflied branzino at dinner without ever feeling scattered. Come morning for the bakery case, stay because the room earns it.

  9. Flora + Fauna is a coffee shop in the Highland Yards development, where the nature theme is understated enough that nobody will ask you to hug a tree. The drinks menu keeps rotating through inventive flavors, and there's a lunch menu with seasonal pancake specials for dates who want a real meal. It's the sort of place people bring someone they like, and the parking lot helps. Nashville Scene named it Best Place for a Coffee Date.

  10. The Coco Puffs, chocolate cream puffs blanketed in frosting, are what most people come for, but Liliha is equally a diner, and the counter at the Kuakini Street original is where you want to sit. Short-order cooks work at a pace that makes you forget your coffee is getting cold. Crisp waffles, char-grilled burgers, oxtail soup, butter rolls with aggressively red jelly: the menu reads like it was written by someone who never overthought anything.

  11. A neighborhood dive bar that fully commits to the bit: vintage furniture with backstories, a cigarette machine, free arcade games, and a jukebox that always has Marty Robbins on deck. The drinks are cold, the Old Style is colder, and the backyard patio with lawn games fills up with the kind of crowd that looks like they've been regulars for years, even if they just discovered it last week.

  12. Rank 5106. Viva! Mexi Coffee Shop

    Mexican Coffee Shop

  13. A chrome Dayton wire wheel serves as the flower pot, and the espresso machine has been custom-painted, and that sets the tone. Xolo is a coffee shop that doubles as a rotating gallery of Chicano and lowrider art, with tuck-and-roll chairs and vintage photography that looks lifted from an East L.A. album. The family next door runs a tattoo shop with the same soul. Pop-ups bring lowriders into the lot and zoot suits through the door.

  14. Rank 5116. Hey Kiddo

    Pan-Asian

A cocktail lounge called Ok Yeah tucked into the back tells you everything about the vibe here. Hey Kiddo is a playful, Asian-inflected restaurant and bar on the third floor of a Tennyson Street building, with a rooftop deck most people don't find on the first visit. The menu runs on shareable plates, and the team behind it earned a James Beard Outstanding Restaurateur semifinalist nod. The room skews young and loud in the best way.

  16. Rank 5119. Drinking Pig BBQ

    Caribbean Barbecue

Caribbean spices do the work that Texas smoke usually handles at this Coconut Grove barbecue spot, where the brisket runs 14 to 16 hours and the spare ribs come jerk-seasoned. The team also runs the fine-dining restaurants Kyu and Shiso, and the patience shows in the supporting cast too: collards, baked beans, cornbread made from fresh-shucked corn. The open courtyard under the hammocks makes a strong argument for ordering an old-fashioned alongside.

  17. Tocabe is a fast-casual spot where you shuffle down the line pointing at things, Chipotle-style, except the thing you're pointing at is fry bread folded around spiced bison. The recipes come from the Osage side of the family, and the berry BBQ-glazed ribs are the sort of detail no chain has ever bothered to invent. It's counter service, so come as you are, and the online shop sells blue corn pancake mix if you're feeling ambitious.

  21. Rank 5124. Field & Vine

    Vietnamese

Wisteria and grapevines twist overhead like they're mid-takeover of the exposed ductwork, and the candlelight does the rest. Field & Vine is a New American restaurant tucked down an alley in Somerville, where a wood-burning hearth crisps duck legs and chars cabbage while the menu quietly gets weird in good ways, miso butter on cornbread, fish-sauce aioli in the tartare. The New York Times named it among Boston's 25 best.

  22. The room seats maybe thirty people and fills up fast, tucked between the West End and Parkside in a spot that looks like a classic neighborhood tavern and then proceeds to serve broiled scallop with caviar and hollandaise. Small plates anchor the menu, the wine list has a point of view, and the cocktails are sharper than the setting lets on. Condé Nast Traveler put it on their Portland list, which surprises no one who's been.

  24. The line outside the squat building on Fredericksburg Road has been a fixture of San Antonio mornings, afternoons, and evenings for as long as anyone can remember. This is a Tex-Mex diner in the old sense, the kind where eggs over easy get doused in salsa and scooped up with warm flour tortillas, and where the menu is so sprawling that regulars still haven't covered it. The staff treats everyone like they've been coming for years, which, in many cases, they have.

  25. Rank 5127. Pammy's

    Mediterranean

Salvaged wood, warm lighting, and a room that feels like it was always there make this Cambridge neighborhood restaurant an easy place to linger. The Mediterranean menu runs prix-fixe, built around careful sourcing and combinations that take a few turns you wouldn't expect. The New York Times and Bon Appétit have both taken notice, and the regulars act accordingly, like they found it first.

  26. Rank 5127. Sachet

    Mediterranean

The corner windows at this Mediterranean restaurant pull you in before you've even touched the door, and the room inside delivers on the promise: open, sunny, and staffed by people who seem to mean it. The kitchen ranges from Morocco to Syria to Spain without breaking a sweat, and the booths fill fast enough that the long counter bar exists for a reason. The wine program earned a James Beard Semifinalist nod, which in Dallas is its own kind of conversation starter.

  28. A few tables and counter seats in the Theater District, which means you're eating Hyderabadi food elbow-to-elbow with strangers who are also very happy about it. The New York Times called out the gongura chicken biryani, and the Michelin Guide took note too. The menu pulls from Hyderabad with nods to the wider subcontinent, and the kitchen moves fast without feeling rushed.

  32. Rank 5135. Baleia

    Portuguese Seafood

Mosaic tiles and fishing-net chandeliers set the mood at this polished Portuguese seafood restaurant in the South End, where the menu moves through salt cod fritters, piri piri chicken, and a shrimp Mozambique swimming in a garlic-butter sauce that makes the grilled bread feel mandatory. Save room for the pastry side of things: the sonhos are the kind of fried-dough situation that quietly becomes the point of the meal.

  34. Portraits of historical drunkards and ne'er-do-wells line the walls of this downtown cocktail bar, which sets the tone pretty efficiently. Long shared tables give the room a public-hall looseness, and the menu swings wide, pairing gin martinis and oysters with po'boys and tropical painkillers. The occasional burlesque night confirms that nobody here is pretending this is a quiet spot for serious reflection.

  35. Tiki bar named after a Dio song, perched above a dive bar on St. Mary's Strip, with rattan furniture and proper mugs but none of the animatronic pageantry the genre has lately embraced. The drinks run from tropical classics to stranger originals, and the whole setup feels more like a cool relative's cluttered attic than a theme park. Which, given the name, is probably the point.

  36. A French team runs this relaxed bistro on Knox Street, and the room reads more neighborhood than tourist trap, with no beret-shaped light fixtures in sight. Classics like duck à l'orange and rabbit in mustard sauce anchor the dinner menu, while lunch keeps things simpler with oysters and fish rillettes. The Paris-Brest is the kind of dessert you order, then immediately resent whoever you brought with you. The Michelin Guide has it selected.

  37. Rank 5135. Madurai Mes

    South Indian

Southern Indian cooking in a strip mall near the Medical Center, where the booths are scuffed and the lighting belongs in a horror meme but the thalis arrive on banana leaves piled around a mound of white rice. This is the kind of casual, inexpensive spot that fills a real gap, since Northern Indian food tends to dominate the city. The biryanis and Madras curries hold up well for delivery, though the lunch thali is the reason regulars keep coming back.

  40. Rank 5135. Rice Paper

    Vietnamese

The line forms before you find the sign, which tells you most of what you need to know about this Vietnamese restaurant tucked inside Falls Church's Eden Center. Rice Paper has been an old-school institution in the Northern Virginia Vietnamese dining scene, turning out coconut curries, lemongrass chicken, and herb-heavy salads to a room that fills fast and empties slowly. The Washington Post named it among the 40 best restaurants in and around D.C.

  42. Rank 5135. Row 34

    Seafood

Lobsters caught by the chef's cousin arrive within 48 hours, which goes some way toward explaining the lobster roll price. Row 34 is a seafood restaurant that does all the expected things, clam chowder and halibut and calamari, then goes a little further: house-smoked fish, cured things, pâté, saltines baked in-house. It's the kind of place where the extra effort shows up in the details rather than on a placard announcing it.

The team ferments, pickles, and sears produce into nigiri, rolls, and ramen that hold their own on the merits, not on goodwill. The room is sleek and lively, drawing skeptics alongside the converted. A Michelin Selected Restaurant.

  44. Rank 5135. The Bar at Mixtli

    Mexican Cocktail Bar

The cocktail menu here tracks Mexico's geography and history the way a graduate thesis might, except the drinks are good enough that you don't feel lectured. This compact Southtown cocktail bar rotates its program in chapters, currently deep in the years before Mexican independence from Spain. Mezcal meets manzanilla and poblano in one glass; spruce tip and tomatillo air appear in another. The minimal room handles both serious contemplation and a fun night out.

  48. Rank 5135. Via Cannuccia

    Rustic Roman Trattoria

Named for the Roman street where the chef grew up, this Dorchester trattoria is built around the conviction that Lazio doesn't get nearly enough credit. The team makes its own pasta, bakes sourdough, roasts porchetta, and somehow squeezes brunch bombolini into the rotation. The cacio e pepe is a four-ingredient argument that nobody needs to improve on cacio e pepe. The New York Times put it on their Boston shortlist, which the regulars on Dorchester Ave probably already knew.

  50. East Colfax is Denver's longest, most mythologized strip, and this mid-century motor hotel conversion settles into it like it never left. The 54 rooms spread across three color palettes named Rosewood, Sagebrush, and Robin's Egg, with kilim rugs and green-tiled bathrooms keeping things coherent. An all-day café handles breakfast through cocktails, and a Mediterranean restaurant opens onto a wine garden out back. The Michelin Guide has it among its selected hotels.

    The awards

  51. Vintage camping lanterns stand in for light fixtures, hand-drawn maps cover the walls, and the whole look lands somewhere between outdoorsy and retro. This downtown Boulder hotel sits steps from the Creek trail and a short walk from Pearl Street, so the kitchenette and loaner bikes aren't just cute touches. There's no restaurant, only a lobby coffee bar, but in a town this caffeinated and trail-obsessed, you'll rarely be inside anyway.

    The awards

  52. The subterranean thermal-pool sequence is the real pitch here: this Alberta Arts District hotel runs far deeper, literally, than your average boutique stay. Rooms come with full kitchens and proper workspaces, and the low-rise neighborhood means views that don't disappoint. A Japanese-Portuguese restaurant, a garden bar café, and a coffee shop round things out for guests who surface long enough to eat.

    The awards

  53. A grand Beaux-Arts building with a vaulted lobby and an original staircase that makes you feel slightly underdressed on arrival. The Fidelity is a 165-room hotel in downtown Cincinnati with a Parisian-inflected sensibility, 17 apartment-style suites, and restored terraces that suggest the building has always known it was something. Gwynne handles dinner; Cora's All-Day Café covers everything else. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

    The awards

  54. Perched on Condado Beach with an unobstructed view straight out to the Atlantic, this 97-room luxury hotel splits the difference between boutique and full resort, which means a lively pool scene without the stadium-crowd feeling. The white-on-white interiors feel deliberately removed from Old San Juan's colonial palette. Three bars, including a beach bar, keep things moving, and the restaurant, Social, runs from classic Puerto Rican to inventive cocktails. The Michelin Guide has it among its selected hotels.

    The awards

  55. The awards

  56. The awards

  57. The rooftop pool looks straight at the Rocky Mountains, which sets the tone for everything below it. Halcyon is a boutique hotel in Cherry Creek North, the quieter, shop-lined neighborhood a short drive from downtown Denver, and it threads a needle the area usually fumbles: the design is genuinely glamorous without feeling like it's trying to impress you. A couple of ambitious restaurants and activity-focused perks round it out.

    The awards

  58. A boutique hotel a short walk from Lake Champlain, Hotel Vermont trades the quilts-and-doilies New England B&B aesthetic for clean lines, stone-tiled showers, and city views. The outdoor wood-fired kitchen and bar keeps things local, turning out pizzas and lobster rolls for guests who want a reason to stay in. Burlington's bar and restaurant scene is right outside the door for everyone else.

  62. The boulevard out front is named for the man who invented the Polaroid camera, which tells you something about the neighborhood's self-image. This Kimpton hotel sits on the Cambridge side of the Charles River, close enough to MIT and Harvard that the lobby's soft sci-fi aesthetic, industrial meets minimalist meets saturated river greens and blues, feels less like a design choice and more like a local dialect.

    The awards

  63. The awards

  64. Infinity pools connected by waterfalls spill toward a private beach in Condado, but La Concha is less a retreat than a scene. The luxury hotel pulls a stylish San Juan crowd to its casino, sushi restaurant, open-air rum bar, and nightclub, so don't expect silence after dark. Guest rooms run bright and sleek, all floor-to-ceiling windows and retro-white decor, with ocean-facing suites and balconies for those inclined to splurge. Complimentary bikes for Old San Juan are a nice touch.

    The awards

  65. Dark wood and colonial atmosphere in Little Havana, this boutique hotel positions itself as the antidote to South Beach fashion. Rooms lean Hemingway-in-the-tropics rather than pastel minimalism, and a garden courtyard plus rooftop bar give you reasons to linger. Staff push you toward the neighborhood itself, which is the point: you're in the heart of Cuban Miami, and the hotel knows it.

    The awards

  66. Fifteen rooms dressed in Mediterranean antiques in a corner of San Juan that otherwise looks like it was finished last Tuesday. O:live is a boutique hotel in Condado with a romantic brief it takes seriously, right down to the peekaboo showers. The rooftop bar has drinks and a view, Bardot handles modern French downstairs, and a no-under-18s policy keeps the whole operation pointed in one direction.

    The awards

  67. A 1970s Rolls-Royce parked poolside, converted into a champagne bar and DJ booth, tells you immediately what kind of hotel this is. O:LV Fifty Five is an all-suite boutique tower in Condado where the 26 rooms lean gold, white, and marble, and most look out over the lagoon. The rooftop holds a bar, restaurant, pool, and, one floor above that, a lounge for the truly committed. Glossy without apology.

    The awards

  68. Red brick exterior, Shaker furniture, and denim pillows make this hotel feel like Harvard's well-appointed guest quarters, which is more or less what it is, sitting between the university and Radcliffe. Rooms lean Boston-cozy over sleek, with fresh flowers and burgundy armchairs. The walls are famously thick, which matters more than you'd think when the neighbors are practicing anything at all.

    The awards

  69. Pharrell Williams and Miami nightlife impresario David Grutman built this South Beach hotel with a rooftop swim club, DJ booth, and private cabanas, which tells you exactly what you're signing up for. Somehow the rooms manage cozy and cocoon-like rather than afterparty wreckage, and the staff skips the velvet-rope attitude entirely. A spa and gym keep mornings functional, which is more than most hotels in this zip code can promise.

    The awards

  70. Greenery woven through the lobby sets the tone at this 299-room hotel sitting at the corner of the 610 loop and Westheimer, a short walk from both River Oaks District and the Galleria. The design leans into natural textures and custom linens, giving it a lush, almost residential feel. Upstairs, a rooftop bar; downstairs, Richard Sandoval's wood-fire Mexican restaurant. The Michelin Guide has it among its selected Houston hotels.

  74. The hot ham with melted Swiss on a bun costs $7, which tells you almost everything about this retro burger shop. George Motz has spent his career obsessing over regional American hamburger joints, and the menu reflects that slightly unhinged dedication, with monthly tributes to obscure local styles and an off-menu grilled cheese that hides a burger inside. The New York Times named it one of New York's best new restaurants of 2024.

  75. Rank 5186. Macheen

    Mexican

Housemade corn tortillas are the baseline here, warm and soft, and everything else is a riff on the form that lands somewhere between street food and genuine curiosity. Macheen is a taqueria operating as a pop-up, rotating through Boyle Heights and Smorgasburg, with a menu that might pile daikon pickles and grilled rib-eye onto one taco and sweet smoky beets al pastor onto another. The New York Times put it on their 25 best L.A. restaurants list, which tracks.

  76. Rank 5187. Lenox

    Caribbean

The lechon arrives as a pinwheel of pork with skin so shatteringly crisp it sounds like a problem. Lenox is a Caribbean restaurant in Belltown doing Nuyorican cooking with palm-print wallpaper, rattan fixtures, and a rum-heavy cocktail list that leans hard into the beach-bar premise. The spice mixes are made in-house, the piña coladas get poured generously, and Bon Appétit named it one of America's Best New Restaurants in 2025.

  79. CJ & D's is a tomato pie counter tucked inside Cartesian Brewing on East Passyunk, which means you order in person and then drink beer while a pie is made, one at a time. Trenton-style puts the cheese down first and the sauce on top, an arrangement that looks like a mistake until you see the thin, blistered crust. There are four pies on the menu, so the hardest decision is how many to commit to before the first one lands.

  81. Rank 5190. Dante's HiFi

    Japanese Cocktail Bar

Wynwood's answer to Japan's listening bars, Dante's HiFi is built around an analog sound system fed by a music director's vinyl library that runs north of 8,000 records. The cocktail program leans into Japanese whisky highballs made with the kind of precision that would satisfy a Tokyo bartender, alongside house drinks that pull from local flavors. Come for the music as much as the drinks; no one's rushing you out.

  82. Rank 5190. Miyake

    Classic Japanese

The blonde wood sushi bar is the room's focal point, and the chefs behind it move like they've been doing this forever. Miyake is a classic Japanese restaurant on Fore Street where the kitchen fuses traditional sushi with French and Italian technique and leans hard into Maine seafood. Every seat fills fast, and the counter draws regulars who know exactly what they're ordering before they sit down.

  84. Rank 5190. Papi

    Puerto Rican Cocktail Bar

Mahogany double doors shipped from Puerto Rico anchor the entrance to this Puerto Rican cocktail bar in the Old Port, where salsa and merengue fill the room and the tiled bar is the obvious place to sit. The drinks lean inventive, the food is serious enough to linger over, and the whole thing has a regional Spirited Award to its name. Portland has seafood shacks covered; this is doing something else entirely.

  85. The counter seats maybe a dozen people, the room is barely wider than a hallway, and it runs noon until late without a break. Petit Trois is a French bistro in Hollywood doing the classics straight: escargots, steak frites, a legendary omelet. French hip-hop plays while the kitchen ignores it completely and turns out textbook bistro cooking. The "Big Mec," a double cheeseburger finished with bordelaise, is the one concession to the neighborhood.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
