  1. Two brothers who started cooking congee in their college apartment now run one of the more quietly singular breakfast and lunch spots in Seattle. The bowl is Thai at heart, so expect tom yum shrimp or mala lamb shoulder alongside the straightforward chicken, with seasonal riffs keeping regulars guessing. The New York Times put it on their Seattle list, which tracks. Open mornings through early afternoon only, so plan ahead.

  3. Rank 4553. St. Jack

    Bistro

The zinc bar top is probably the most honest thing about St. Jack: it tells you exactly what you're in for before you've ordered a drink. This is a French-leaning bistro on NW 23rd, the kind where steak frites and a martini at the bar feels like a complete plan, but where the kitchen also runs scallop crudo and roast chicken goosed with Espelette pepper. A grand cru Burgundy is available if you're feeling generous with yourself.

  4. Eight counter seats and a booking list that moves slower than island traffic: that's Sushi Gyoshin, a kaiseki-inflected omakase tucked into a strip on Piikoi. The chef opens with savory riffs on traditional monaka before moving into nigiri built from blended vinegars and two rice varieties. The seafood travels far, and the room is intimate enough that you'll notice every detail of what lands in front of you.

  5. Rank 4553. Sushi-Wa

    Sushi

White subway tile, a wooden counter, and seats that stay full from open to close: Sushi-Wa is a small omakase room tucked into a warehouse district better known for its breweries. The chefs settled into Edomae-style sushi after some searching, and the result is a measured, unhurried procession of bites where restraint does most of the work. A surprising address for this kind of precision, but Charleston has learned to make the trip.

  6. Baked baby pumpkin with yogurt has been landing on tables at this Afghan restaurant in Mount Vernon for what feels like forever, and the room fills with people who know exactly what they're ordering before they sit down. Come with a crowd and ask for family style; the staff takes over from there, spreading large portions across the table until there's no room left to second-guess yourself.

  7. Rank 4553. Tori Tori

    Izakaya Japanese

The restaurant's name painted across the side of the building sets the tone before you're even inside. Tori Tori is a Mills District izakaya, meaning you'll spend a happy evening moving between yakitori skewers, creative sake cocktails, and fried rice packed with crab. No reservations, so the drill is arriving early or accepting your fate in the line out front, which most regulars seem to take as a point of pride.

  8. Rank 4553. Two Headed Dog

    Cocktail Bar

The bathrooms are papered in decoupaged vintage Playboys, which tells you most of what you need to know about this Midtown dive bar. Named after a Roky Erickson song, Two Headed Dog leans hard into its free-spirited brief, with a colorful patio and a rotating cocktail menu that punches well above the surroundings. The frozen drinks are a particular draw for anyone who finds serious cocktail bars a little exhausting.

  10. Voodoo Queen Daiquiri Dive in the East End is a dive bar that also contains an arcade, a po'boy counter, and eight frozen drink machines churning like a laundromat for neon. Pool and air hockey keep the hands busy, and the menu runs to fried shrimp, hush puppies, and tater tots under roast beef. Come in jeans, split a flaming tiki boat with whoever you trust most, and expect to leave with a very green tongue.

  11. A shack-shaped neighborhood bar that has been selling cold drinks since it sold actual ice, back when that was a business. Lone Stars flow at red picnic tables under open sky, dogs wander in, and a taco truck across the street handles food duties. Houston has a whole category named after places like this, and Houstonians will tell you, with some feeling, that the others are impostors.

  12. Rank 4553. Yume Ga Arukara

The stainless steel noodle machine in the window tells you everything: this is a udon shop, and udon is the only thing on the menu. The thick wheat noodles come out smooth and just slightly chewy, served in dashi broth hot or cold, spicy or not, with fatty beef, scallions, and tempura bits. The Seaport location has room to breathe after the original Cambridge spot became famous for its lines. The New York Times put it on their 25 best in Boston list.

    Tiki Bar

A small bridge over a little moat takes you from a residential stretch of Northeast Broadway into what is, with commitment, a full tiki immersion. Woven palm walls, bamboo rafters, illuminated pufferfish, and three hand-carved tiki gods loom over the sunken bar while intermittent thunder rumbles and wisps of volcano smoke drift through. The rum-based cocktails are the actual point of the exercise, and nobody here seems to mind.

  14. The nigiri pieces here are cut large, scored deep, and pressed onto generous mounds of rice, which tells you something about what the chef thinks omakase should feel like. Ten seats, nigiri only, and fish shipped twice weekly from Japan. A tuna handroll with avocado and a scallop the size of the rice beneath it keep things from getting too reverent. The beverage list is kindly priced for a room this serious.

  15. Complimentary housemade pita arrives warm at this Lebanese restaurant in Mason, and it sets the tone for everything that follows. The mezza menus run long enough that most tables over-order on appetizers before the kebabs and shawarma ever arrive, which is its own kind of problem to have. The owner has been known to stop at every table with pairing advice, then greet returning guests by name. Come without a hard stop time.

  16. Rank 4613. Sotto

    Italian

The entrance is easy to miss: a staircase beside Boca's red door, leading well below street level. Sotto is a pasta-forward Italian speakeasy downtown, where the team makes things by hand and pours a lot of table wine, and the antipasti menu will quietly destroy your willpower before the main event arrives. Truffle season turns the tajarin into something quietly serious. The descent sets the mood, and there are enough steps that ordering a second pasta feels almost responsible.

  17. The name lies a little: Teardrop is a square room with painted concrete walls, and the curve comes from the island bar itself, which bends the whole space into something warmer than the bones suggest. It's a serious cocktail lounge, the kind where the menu moves between classics, originals, and borrowed recipes from people who've thought hard about this stuff. Classic films flicker overhead, the lighting is kind, and a quiet Monday still feels like somewhere worth being.

YUGIN is an omakase spot inside the Plaza Hotel, opening with composed seasonal courses before moving into a classical nigiri progression, with faint European touches woven through Japanese technique. Custom ceramics, pristine sourcing, and restrained seasoning throughout, for a crowd that books months out and dresses accordingly.

Pickled onions, chipotle yogurt, mint, dill, and a honey drizzle all show up in one sandwich, and fermented hot sauce sits on every table for good measure. The fries come dusted with porcini powder. Casual, order-at-the-counter, and close enough to Alamo Square to make a picnic the obvious move.

  23. Rank 4623. Roots Southern Table

    Modern Southern

The open kitchen gives you a view of the whole operation, and it runs with what looks like choreographed precision. Tiffany Derry's modern Southern restaurant in Farmers Branch earns James Beard nominations alongside regulars who could probably recite the menu cold. Duck fat-fried chicken is the calling card, the gumbo is serious, and the cast-iron cornbread arrives first for good reason. Dressy-casual, suburban, and worth the drive from anywhere in Dallas.

  24. Rank 4624. Cosmo's

    Vietnamese

Walls of VHS tapes set the tone at this Vietnamese restaurant and bar that's been an East Dallas fixture forever. The '60s lounge vibe makes it feel like a party someone threw and never quite ended. The menu runs eclectic but Vietnamese dishes anchor it, and the espresso martini is made with house-brewed Vietnamese coffee, in limited supply each night. Order the garlic noodles if they have them, and hope quietly that they do.

  25. The buss up shut here is the size of a shirt and flaky as a biscuit, which the name, Trinidadian slang for "busted up shirt," promises and the kitchen delivers. This is a roti shop in South Ozone Park, cash and carry, no fuss. The koi ponds in the dining room are the first hint that this isn't your average dim sum operation. Koi Palace is a sprawling, upscale Cantonese dim sum hall in Daly City that's been an anchor of the Bay Area scene forever, and the carts still move with unusual confidence. A James Beard semifinalist, it draws weekend crowds willing to wait for siu mai that skew smaller and fresher than the genre norm.

  28. Weekend lines form outside this Inner Richmond bakery before most people have finished their coffee, and the croissants are why. They shatter into a thousand airy layers on first bite, the kind that make every other version feel like a compromise. Pain au chocolat and a ham and cheese round out the short menu. The Civic Center location adds seating and sandwiches, but the original is a pilgrimage of the buttery kind.

  31. Rank 4629. Ruins

    Latin American Mexican Dive Bar

The tequila and mezcal list at this Deep Ellum bar is long enough to constitute a philosophical commitment. Ruins leans hard into Latin culture, with original artwork on the walls and cocktails that come with actual folklore attached. The Limbo Room out back hosts live music in close quarters. It reads like a dive bar that got serious about agave spirits without losing the plot.

    American

The owner is often spotted bussing tables or running food on a busy night, which sets the tone for this Lower Greenville bar and American kitchen that manages to feel like it's been around forever. Cozy enough for a quiet date, loose enough for drinks with friends, it occupies that useful middle ground between neighborhood bar and proper dinner spot. An English chef handles the kitchen, keeping things grounded rather than showy.

  34. Rank 4633. Black Swan Saloon

    Cocktail Bar

The Clint Eastwood velvet artwork made the move from Deep Ellum, and so did the regulars. Black Swan Saloon is a cocktail bar in East Dallas with a moody, kitschy interior that somehow lands as genuinely cozy, the kind of room where dressing up and wearing a vintage rock tee both look right. House cocktails and boilermakers anchor the menu, and the frozen martini has become the thing everyone's carrying through the crowd.

  35. Rank 4633. Bowen House

    Cocktail Bar

A cocktail bar tucked into a genuine old Uptown house, Bowen House leans into the atmosphere without making it a whole thing. The drink menu runs from draft beer and a tidy wine list up to signature cocktails with names like "For Whom the Bell Pepper Tolls," which is exactly the kind of pun that works better than it should. The crowd tends toward the kind of people who like a porch vibe without leaving the city.

  36. Shelves of wine bottles line every wall of this small, happily unpretentious wine bar tucked into a strip mall on Indian School. The vibe is couch-and-conversation, the kind of place where you sit down next to strangers and somehow end up closing it down with them. The food menu runs to pimento cheese and Moroccan spiced meatballs, which is a perfectly reasonable way to soak up a second pour. Phoenix New Times named it one of the top 100 bars in the city.

  39. The house-made Spam in the kimchi fried rice is either the menu's punchline or its thesis statement, depending on your attitude. Ravi Kapur's Californian-Hawaiian restaurant on Sutter runs on strong cocktails and shareable plates, with an open kitchen keeping the room loud and sociable. The New York Times has called it one of San Francisco's 25 best restaurants, and it's held a Michelin Guide selection since the buzz was at its loudest.

  41. The tlayuda, a large tortilla charred and spread with herby black beans, is a good reason to learn where Ennalls Avenue is. This casual Silver Spring taco shop draws on Oaxacan tradition, so expect moles with real depth alongside the alambres, where grilled meat and melted cheese arrive ready to be scooped into tortillas. The Washington Post and Washingtonian both count it among the D.C. area's top tables, which the no-frills room does nothing to advertise.

    Cajun & Creole

The line outside this Houston breakfast and brunch spot is so reliable that they've worked out a whole system: heaters in winter, water in summer, and occasionally a bouncy castle, which is a sentence you don't type about many restaurants. Southern and Creole comfort food is the draw, wings and waffles being the dish everyone mentions first, with catfish and grits not far behind. Show up when the doors open or plan around the wait.

    Vietnamese

The French dip bánh mì arrives with a cup of beef phở jus for dunking, which tells you everything about how this Inner Richmond restaurant handles Vietnamese food. Chef Rob Lam pulls from both classic technique and contemporary Saigon street food, so the menu lands somewhere between a chicken consommé you'd linger over and jackfruit "pizza" on crispy rice paper. Closer to a special-occasion dinner than a casual bowl spot, price-wise.

  45. Sushi Gen is a Little Tokyo sushi bar that's been around forever, and the line out the door suggests nobody has told it to slow down. The move is a sampler plate of the house favorites, priced like a normal weeknight dinner. If you'd rather steer, grab a seat at the counter and order nigiri à la carte while veteran chefs turn out piece after piece without breaking a sweat. It's casual and cash-friendly, so wear whatever you like.

  46. Rank 4648. Otro Cafe

    Central Mexican Café

Cajeta pancakes topped with banana, crème fraîche, caramel, and candied peanuts are doing a lot of the heavy lifting at this colorful, homey Mexico City-style brunch spot in uptown Phoenix. Weekend waits get real, so the attached coffee bar next door exists to make the line bearable. The salsas are not messing around.

  49. Tobacco-brown Chesterfield sofas, exposed brick, and a jazz soundtrack that never quite lets you hear your neighbor all set the mood at this River North steakhouse. Wet-aged cuts are broiled with care, and the raw bar holds its own alongside them. The room is dark and loud by design, which mostly works in everyone's favor. The Michelin Guide has it listed, and on a Friday night you'll understand why the reservations go fast.

  50. Rank 4655. Convivio Café

    Latin American Coffee Shop

The coffee here is sourced directly from Guatemala, and the Latin-inspired food menu follows the same ethos. This West Highland coffee shop takes its name from the tradition of gathering around food and drink, which explains a lot about the room: murals on the walls, a crowd that includes Central American immigrants and neighbors who've clearly been coming since week one, and a general feeling that someone thought hard about what welcome looks like.

  59. Rank 4665. The Eleanor

    Breakfast American

The counter stools and cozy booths have the feel of a midcentury diner, which is exactly the point: The Eleanor is a breakfast and brunch spot built as a deliberate antidote to Scottsdale's party-brunch scene. Pancakes, hash, and biscuits and gravy share the menu with avocado toast and Buddha bowls, and the grab-and-go fridge means you can linger over slow coffee or bolt, your call.

  60. Rank 4666. Giusto

    Italian

Sit on the shaded deck overlooking Newport Harbor and you start to understand what this restaurant is doing. It's a waterfront dining room that leans into New England seafood without leaning on cliché. The tonnarelli with green garlic and Narragansett clams landed on the New York Times' best dishes of 2024 list, and the pasta itself is made in-house daily. A James Beard semifinalist for Outstanding Hospitality, which tracks: the place has that rare ease.

  62. The hourglass pool is the giveaway: this mid-century boutique hotel on the edge of Beverly Hills was built for people who know their Eames from their Noguchi and want the furniture to prove it. The blocky blue facade and curvaceous pool invite Marilyn Monroe comparisons, though the hotel probably doesn't encourage them. Quieter than you'd expect this close to everything, and the rates tend to be gentler than the zip code implies.

  63. The bones here are Albert Kahn's old Art Deco Walker-Roehrig Building, once home to WWJ radio, now a boutique hotel where the heritage stops at the lobby threshold and the rooms go full contemporary. Suites run generous by city-center standards, and the building's second act includes Cibo Detroit for dinner, the Beve cocktail bar for something swanky, and a rooftop terrace when the weather cooperates.

  64. The black-glass tower sits directly above TD Garden, which means Bruins nights are either thrilling or a logistical adventure depending on your schedule. This design-forward hotel keeps rooms compact and consistent: XL beds, rain showers, blackout blinds, and a tablet that runs everything. The second-floor lobby doubles as a lounge, with street art and deep colors doing the heavy lifting. Beacon Hill and the harbor are visible from the terrace if you need convincing you're somewhere.

  66. A koi pond and a fountain anchor the courtyard of this small boutique hotel on South Congress, which is otherwise surrounded by taco bars and boot shops doing brisk business. No front desk, no elevator, no pool: just calm oak-furnished suites with Sferra linens and private wood-lined verandas behind sliding glass doors. The Japanese-inspired restraint makes it feel like the neighborhood's noise belongs to someone else entirely.

  68. The old bikini bar sign still hangs above the Santa Monica Boulevard entrance, which tells you most of what you need to know about Gold Diggers as a hotel. It occupies a building that once housed a bikini bar downstairs, a residential hotel above it, and a rehearsal space out back where L.A. rock royalty is rumored to have practiced. The vibe is exactly what that history implies: a rock-and-roll hotel that didn't have to try very hard to become one.

  70. Sitting on Santa Fe Square in the Blue Dome district, this boutique hotel puts Tulsa's dining and arts scene more or less at the doorstep. High-design rooms and a luxury-boutique feel in Oklahoma's second city, which makes a certain kind of sense once you walk around the neighborhood. The Arts District and the historic commercial center are both a short stroll away, so you spend more time out than in.

  71. The Walters Art Museum is around the corner and the Peabody Institute just beyond, so the boutique hotel that landed in Mount Vernon clearly knew its audience. Joie de Vivre filled Hotel Revival with enough art and design that the rooms themselves feel curated rather than decorated. Mount Vernon is one of Baltimore's oldest and most quietly creative neighborhoods, and the hotel leans into that identity without making you feel like you wandered into a gallery opening.

  73. A tranquil inner garden courtyard sits at the center of this boutique hotel in downtown Palo Alto, which builds its whole identity around the idea of an urban ryokan. Japanese-inspired interiors keep things grounded while the rest of Silicon Valley's hotel scene leans toward the safely corporate. It's a genuinely calm place to land in a city not exactly known for them, and the Michelin Guide includes it among its selected hotels.

  76. Transparent igloos on the roof keep the cocktail hour going through a Boston winter, which tells you something about the attitude of this Seaport hotel. Rooms are contemporary with a wry streak, TV stands welded from old bike frames included, and floor-to-ceiling windows pull in harbor views. It's a Marriott Autograph Collection property, the chain's boutique arm, so the personality is deliberate and the service runs smooth.

  77. Multi-bedroom suites with full kitchens and gas grills on private balconies make this Andersonville boutique hotel feel like you borrowed a friend's apartment, except the friend's apartment overlooks a cemetery, which is quieter than it sounds. A rooftop deck, a Club Room, and a bookable Library round out the communal spaces. The Red Line is a short walk if you need downtown, but the neighborhood's low-key charm tends to keep people close.

  79. A converted 1895 firehouse standing alone in a neighborhood otherwise paved over by MIT and the global tech industry, The Kendall Hotel is a boutique stay where the Queen Anne facade and twin cupolas do most of the talking. Rooms are snug and characterful in the way only old firehouses can manage, and the Black Sheep Lounge downstairs leans Iberian for small plates when you need a reason not to walk anywhere.

  80. The name comes not from the exterior (handsome sandstone brick, as it happens) but from Louise C. Wooster, a former tenant who went from madam to cholera nurse and apparently left an impression. This boutique hotel packs 22 rooms with vivid color, bold graphics, and modern furniture tucked inside well-preserved historic bones. Public spaces are minimal, but downtown Birmingham's restaurants and the UAB medical district are both a short walk away.

    The awards

  81. A century-old Beaux Arts building in Uptown Dallas, the Stoneleigh is a hotel that its newer neighbors can't quite replicate no matter how hard they try. London designers Fettle refreshed the rooms by channeling Dorothy Draper, the original decorator, so the place reads classic rather than preserved-in-amber. An Italian supper club and a cocktail bar keep guests from wandering too far. The Michelin Guide has it among its selected hotels.

    The awards

  82. A mid-century motel in the shadow of Fenway Park that, instead of leaning into Red Sox nostalgia like every other spot in the neighborhood, pays tribute to the Fenway/Kenmore area's rock-and-roll history. The Verb is a boutique hotel where the decor does the talking, and the talking is about music. Guests who don't care about baseball but do own vinyl will feel oddly at home here.

    The awards

  83. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame either the Houston skyline or Buffalo Bayou Park depending on which way your room faces, which is a nice problem to have. This boutique-style full-service hotel runs midcentury modern throughout its rooms and suites, with spa showers and high-end linens doing the heavy lifting. The rooftop pool is one of the larger ones in the city, and there's a coffee shop and a steakhouse when you surface.

    The awards

  84. Rugged wood, leather, and stone textures run through the modernist interiors here, giving the Thompson brand's mid-century aesthetic a quietly Texan edge. This sleek hotel towers above the River Walk, which means the city's restaurants, bars, and shops are essentially at the front door. It's a Hyatt property now, but the design identity has held. The Michelin Guide lists it among its selected hotels.

    The awards

  85. A converted Holiday Inn in Corktown where the exposed conduit and polished concrete aren't a design oversight but the whole point. The 144 rooms pair that industrial shell with custom furnishings from local artisans, keeping things clean-lined without feeling spare. Batch Brewing pours at the bar, Detroit Bikes handles the rentals, and the courtyard runs a beer garden and live music when the weather cooperates. A hotel that leans hard into Detroit's comeback narrative, and Corktown is a fine neighborhood to make that argument from.

  86. The brick-and-glass building at the north end of Music Row sets the tone before you even walk in: mid-century space-age interiors with an industrial edge running through the public spaces, which is about as on-brand for Nashville as a hotel can get. This boutique hotel sits just outside downtown, close enough to the nightlife that you can hear it thinking about you, and it's a Michelin Selected Hotel.

  89. The fried chicken here landed on the New York Times' list of the year's best dishes across the country, which is a notable thing to pull off from a supper club in a town where a June snowstorm is plausible. The bird comes brined and buttermilked, but the real draw is the rotating sauce lineup, classic ranch and pineapple-habanero alongside wilder guest appearances like plum-fenugreek. The chef holds a 2025 James Beard semifinalist nod for Best Chef: Mountain.

  91. Rank 4698. North of Bourbon

    Cajun & Creole

Gumbo as dark as a Louisiana bayou at midnight, only built around smoked brisket and wilted greens, is a reasonable summary of what the kitchen is doing here. This modern Cajun-Creole restaurant in Louisville's Schnitzelburg neighborhood lands chef Lawrence Weeks on the New York Times Restaurant List and a James Beard Emerging Chef semifinalist nod, both in the same year. The menu takes familiar Southern dishes and quietly tilts them sideways with Haitian, Latin, and Gulf Coast influences.

  93. A pasta program that changes with the season keeps regulars at this Germantown neighborhood restaurant coming back to see what Philip Krajeck is running on the menu. The cooking is unfussy and ingredient-driven, the kind of sharing-plates dinner where everything on the table looks better than what you ordered. The Michelin Guide has it selected, and a James Beard nomination for Best Chef Southeast followed.

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
